The Dazz Band is an American funk music band that was most popular in the early 1980s. Emerging from Cleveland, Ohio, the group’s biggest hit songs include the Grammy Award-winning “Let It Whip” (1982), “Joystick” (1983), and “Let It All Blow” (1984). The name of the band is a portmanteau of the description “danceable jazz”.

In SC, the far right raises a white flag
Gingrich’s South Carolina victory is in reality, it seems to me, a momentary far-right surrender; an overt admission from the reddest of the red that their party will never whip Barack Obama in November, so why not revel in an utterly futile, barn-burning hurrah?
They are now mired squarely in the muck of Goldwater territory — the gold standard of wild political swinging, of political hopelessness, of political collapse. Tonight, the Grand Old Party, in an intoxicated stupor of Gingrichian ire, conceded wholesale irrelevancy and inescapable defeat.
I do not, however, expect the party’s drunken jag to last. A sobering-up period would seem inevitable, or at least such periods usually are. The stark horror of a Gingrich nomination will ripple throughout the remaining lower 47’s base; the faithful will suddenly take heart that Mitt Romney actually knows how to run for office; they’ll convince themselves out of desperate ideological necessity that Obama is indeed vulnerable.
Which he isn’t — not given what the GOP is coughing up this year, whether it’s a Romney or a Gingrich. No way.

The core of the speech: Gingrich is fighting the “elites” who for 35 years have been trying to turn America into something else. This is a former Speaker of the House, and a denizen of the Washington trough. And he still sees himself as an outsider. But he’s playing nice tonight – especially with Santorum. Is he trying to charm him out of the race? Then he endorses Ron Paul’s view on the Federal Reserve. And praises Romney as a good organizer. These individuals are somehow a response to the “elites”. Even a multi-millionaire son of a former governor.
Then the Obama-Is-An-Alien line: “we will run an American campaign, not a Republican one.” All the Republican candidates are Americans. But the elites are not. Key phrase: “Think of how radical Obama would be in his second term.” Then the condescension toward this “absurdity” of a president. And the TelePrompter gag. Do these people really buy into the idea that Obama is unable to articulate himself?
And we have the core McCarthyite theme: American exceptionalism versus the Saul Alinsky radicalism. “We” are Americans. Obama is a traditional America-hater.
Then the religion card: the increasing anti-religious “bigotry” of the elites will be his enemy. He will deploy race and religion and nationalism as his themes. No wonder South Carolina loved him. And rather than retreating on the racially charged “food stamp president” line, he reiterates it.
This is what the GOP now is, and it deserves its spokesman. But do not under-estimate the appeal to some of the idea of humiliating and removing the first black president. That’s what Gingrich is really about. He is giving them what they want. And it’s meat that has barely seen a skillet.
Now he wants an American energy policy – not Obama’s. And he wants US presidents to stop bowing to the Saudi king. He knows in his bones how to work this constituency, while of course, “fundamentally reforming the government at every level.”
Then we hear about Obama’s “extreme left-wing allies from San Francisco” and now he is a “danger to this country”. “He makes Jimmy Carter look strong.” He wants the final showdown between America and socialism/Marxism/radicalism/Jihadism/Obama. And the rage among some about a black president actually exercizing authority is real. This man can roil it brutally, shamelessly, mercilessly. And he will.

Here We Go: The South Carolina Primary of Resistance

N. Leroy Gingrich, Definer of Civilization Rules and (perhaps) Leader of the Civilizing Forces, is big on disenthrallment. Most of the literature shelled by his campaign contains this famous passage from Abraham Lincoln:
The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise — with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.
If we’re going to consider what’s gone on in South Carolina over the past couple of weeks, it’s important to consider the historical context of the quote from Lincoln that Newt has decided to turn into his own personal campaign jingle. It comes from a message that Lincoln gave to the Congress on December 1, 1862, a month before he would sign the Emancipation Proclamation. The “dogmas of the quiet past” that had proven to be “inadequate to the stormy present” from which Lincoln said we must disenthrall ourselves in order to save the country — they consisted solely of the constitutional, political, and legal infrastructure that protected the institution of human slavery. An important part of that infrastructure was an interpretation and application of the 10th Amendment that differs from that proposed by Gingrich and every other remaining Republican candidate only in the fact that the Army of Northern Virginia is no longer around to shoot people in its defense. And now we know what a “historian” does at a boutique Beltway lobbying shop.

There is going to be a lot of talk after the primary is over here about how Iowa and New Hampshire really didn’t count, and why South Carolina was the real test, and people will not pursue that line of thinking anywhere near as far as they should. In reality, the Republican primary electorate down here differs very little from the Republican primary electorate in those other two places. All three of them are white, fairly old, and thoroughly reactionary. But the Republican primary electorate in South Carolina is far more serious about everything that goes into being a Republican primary electorate in 2012, after nearly five decades of work has gone into fashioning what a genuine Republican primary electorate in 2012 should be.
All three groups are white, but South Carolinians are more serious about being white. All three groups are heavily influenced by the conservative splinters of evangelical Protestantism, but South Carolinians are more serious about being Christian. All three groups talk loosely about rolling back the New Deal, about minimizing the permanent impact of the Civil Rights Movement, and about loosening the limits of theocracy that were previously a matter of common agreement, but South Carolinians expect the candidates down here to deliver on this stuff. This is the Nullification primary. This is the Massive Resistance primary. This is the primary of old unsettled grudges. This is the primary where nothing and nobody ever is truly disenthralled.

My free New York Times access is used up for the month, and I’m in no mood to pay them. So, I have to get my David Brooks second-hand. It’s better that way. It’s hard to believe how bad his latest column is. I mean, the standards are already incredibly low. Some things that I still haven’t figured out are why it is okay to flee the United States so you can continue to engage in polygamy, and then it is okay to return to the country without going through the proper immigration procedures. Does David Brooks really want to try to paint Romney’s ancestors as honorable? I don’t think Mitt Romney wants people to know anything about his ancestors. The less said about the church in Nauvoo, Illinois, the better. The less said about Romney v. the United States, the better. The less said about Romney’s dad being born in Mexico, the better. And that his dad was snuck back into the country when he was five? It’s a good thing they hadn’t built that dang fence, huh, Mitt?
Yet, of course, none of that means Mitt should be judged for the sins of his grandparents and great-grandparents. But that’s precisely why David Brooks is so stupid.

One of the most beautiful and popular celebrity couples are apparently going their separate ways. Despite a seemingly happy 7-year marriage singer Seal and supermodel Heidi Klum are reportedly divorcing over “irreconcilable differences.” Huffington Post reports:
Some really sad news: Heidi Klum is filing for divorce from Seal, her husband of almost 7 years, TMZ reports.
Klum will reportedly file in Los Angeles next week, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
Klum, 38, and Seal, 48, married in 2005 on a beach in Mexico. They have three biological children together, in addition to Heidi’s daughter Leni from a previous relationship.
The stylish couple was widely known for their lavish Halloween parties (and equally outlandish couple costumes). They also renewed their vows every year in elaborate ceremonies.

WASHINGTON – The White House Correspondents’ Association is pleased to announce that Jimmy Kimmel, host of the ABC late-night talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will headline the WHCA’s 98th annual dinner on Saturday, April 28, 2012.
“Jimmy’s humor is sophisticated and edgy while appealing to a wide audience,” said Caren Bohan, a Reuters journalist and president of the White House Correspondents’ Association. “We are thrilled that Jimmy has accepted our invitation to be the featured comedian at our annual dinner.”
The WHCA dinner is traditionally attended by the President and First Lady as well as many other senior government officials and members of the press corps. Proceeds from the dinner go toward scholarships and awards aimed at supporting aspiring journalists and recognizing excellence in the profession.

Interview with Roe v. Wade Lawyer Sarah Weddington

January 22 marks the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States. That ruling has been called the most significant of the 20th century. Certainly it was the most significant for women.
The case was argued by a 27-year old female lawyer from Texas — Sarah Weddington, in her first appearance before the Court. Female lawyers were so rare in those days that the Supreme Court lawyers lounge didn’t even have a ladies room. There were no female Supreme Court justices. Weddington faced a wall of older white men.
Almost 40 years later, Sarah Weddington is still a tireless advocate for women. She now teaches leadership at the University of Texas at Austin, writes and speaks nationwide, and continues to educate young women and men on rights and responsibilities, and the fragile nature of progress without vigilance. I took a look back (and a look forward) with her last week on my radio show, Equal Time with Martha Burk. Here are some highlights:

Gingrich Took a Month to Rebound, but Here He Is

Now that everyone in this electoral projections business is picking former House Speaker Newt Gringich to win a come-from-behind victory in today’s South Carolina primary, let’s reflect on why they had so little faith until after the polls began turning his way. Less than a week ago, the New York Times’ 538 blog projected former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney with an 82 percent chance to win in the Palmetto State and, citing its method of “regression analysis” gave him a 98 percent chance to win the GOP nomination.
What a difference a week makes. One good debate performance, another great debate triumph (sparked by a flopped sex scandal attack of the sort that inoculated Bill Clinton in his 1992 presidential campaign) and suddenly Gingrich is back in a big way. The Field projects him to win today’s third-in-the-nation contest, setting up a months-long back-and-forth two-way contest ahead as Gingrich and Romney battle through upcoming state primaries and caucuses (with an ocassional Ron Paul boomlet in the latter, to keep things weird enough). The also-rans have run out of gas. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum just could not get a word in edgewise and probably wishes he had a sex scandal of his own now. Former Utah Governor Rick Huntsman and Texas Governor Rick Perry are now officially out. And Gingrich will now play Itchy to Romney’s Scratchy for the coming weeks and months and then in the end somebody will get blown up and everybody gets to laugh.
But the real lesson here is that polling is not the most reliable indicator for early presidential primaries and caucuses. It wasn’t four years ago when the pundits and pollsters tried to feed us the “inevitability” of Hillary Clinton’s nomination for president, nor is it this cycle when Politico’s Roger Simon wrote, after the Iowa caucuses that “It’s over. Let’s all head to Tampa” and coronate Romney as the nominee. A lot of people who bet on Romney on Intrade (with a 90 percent supposed chance of winning South Carolina) are likely to be parted with their money tonight because they were foolish enough to believe the mass media hype.

Did Obama’s Keystone XL Decision Prevent A Potential Environmental Disaster?
There are myriad methods of defining intelligence depending on circumstance and knowledge, but it is safe to say that at the most basic level, learning from other’s prior errant actions and avoiding repeating them is at least smart. It is not often that in a short time span, an entire country witnesses a leader avoid repeating their predecessor’s mistakes, but Americans saw firsthand how President Obama identified Republican’s errors and possibly prevented a devastating environmental disaster.
The Keystone XL pipeline that Republicans forced the president to decide on within a two month timetable demonstrates their willingness to give a foreign oil company carte blanche to use American territory to send crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast without regard for the environment. It was nearly two years ago that another foreign-owned oil company caused the worst environmental disaster in American history because regulations governing safety procedures were left up to the oil industry to enforce. The similarities between the BP-Deepwater Horizon oil spill and a potentially devastating oil spill in America’s heartland are striking except for one fact; President Barack Obama.
The President’s denial of a permit to give the foreign oil company, TransCanada, the right to build a 36-inch, approximately 1,661-mile-long crude oil pipeline is already being criticized by Republicans. They contend the pipeline will employ tens-of-thousands of workers and reduce oil dependency here in the U.S., but as is usually the case with anything Republicans claim; they lie. Estimates are anywhere from hundreds to 6,000 jobs, but the true figure is probably closer to 2,000 jobs to build the pipeline. Republicans also conveniently omit that TransCanada, a foreign company, will certainly use their own construction specialists to build the pipeline and that they will not be at the local unemployment office recruiting Americans except for minimum wage manual labor jobs.

Blacks Face Discrimination in Bankruptcy, Too
African-Americans steered more often toward costlier Chapter 13
It looks to be a discriminatory double-whammy: The banking industry steers black people toward bad home loans, and bankruptcy lawyers stick it to them when the loans go bust. A new study shows that black people are twice as likely to end up in the tougher and more expensive form of bankruptcy than whites even if they have the same financial profile, reports the New York Times.
“I don’t think there is any overt conspiracy,” says a co-author of why far more black people get steered into Chapter 13 rather than Chapter 7. “But when you have a complex system, these biases can play out and the people within the system don’t see the pattern because nobody is in charge of looking at these big issues.” Bankruptcy experts unaffiliated with the study float one possibility: Chapter 13 fees are higher but can be paid back over years, while Chapter 7 generally requires a lump sump upfront. Lawyers who don’t think black clients have the money for the lump sum may push them toward Chapter 13 even if it’s not the best choice.

Ga. judge orders president to appear at hearing
A judge has ordered President Barack Obama to appear in court in Atlanta for a hearing on a complaint that says Obama isn’t a natural-born citizen and can’t be president.
It’s one of many such lawsuits that have been filed across the country, so far without success. A Georgia resident made the complaint, which is intended to keep Obama’s name off the state’s ballot in the March presidential primary.
An Obama campaign aide says any attempt to involve the president personally will fail and such complaints around the country have no merit.
The hearing is set for Thursday before an administrative judge. Deputy Chief Judge Michael Malihi on Friday denied a motion by the president’s lawyer to quash a subpoena that requires Obama to show up.

Losing On The Issues, Republicans Amp Up Their Racist Rhetoric
American elections are torrid affairs that last far too long and often do not address pressing matters that could give voters a reason to stay engaged in the electoral process. The upcoming general election threatens to be an exercise in divisiveness from Republicans who yearn to take the country back, but not for the reason they would have most Americans believe. All of the Republican presidential hopefuls have, at some point or another, appealed to perceived racial purity that existed at the nation’s founding and are overtly resurrecting Aryan sensibilities of many Americans. In lieu of any real issues to challenge President Obama, Republicans are counting on winning over racially and economically insecure white voters who perceive the first African American president as an interloper who does not belong in the White House and to a larger extent, the United States.
The Republicans have not assailed the president overtly for his racial make-up, but they have engaged in associative race baiting by contending that all African Americans are lazy interlopers who are robbing white Americans of their rightful place of privilege as the real Americans. Their racial bigotry appeals to fear, anger, and insecurity of white Americans who are repulsed at the thought of four more years of a usurper sitting in the Oval Office, and use “white fear, white anxiety, and white rage to try and defeat Barack Obama.” The racists in the Republican ranks are despicable, but there is a reason they have to resort to portraying the president, by association, with unsavory African Americans; they have nothing else whatsoever to protest about the president’s policies.
Willard Romney may have revealed the point that Republicans have nothing to criticize the President for except his race in a campaign commercial where a narrator says, “Beating Obama is the most important issue.” Is it so important because President Obama raised taxes several times? Or is it that he has been antagonistic to business? Perhaps it is because the President nationalized Wall Street and the banking industry, mining and manufacturing, the oil industry, or seized all private businesses. Did the President disband the military or ban and seize all private firearms? Does the Affordable Health Act institute socialized medicine and eliminate the healthcare insurance industry? Of course, the answer to all of those ridiculous questions is no, but they prove a point.

Huckabee appeared on The O’Reilly Factor Friday evening to discuss the growing story of Mitt Romney unveiling his tax returns, saying the GOP candidate should do that based solely on one condition.

New Definition of Autism Will Exclude Many, Study Suggests

Proposed changes in the definition of autism would sharply reduce the skyrocketing rate at which the disorder is diagnosed and might make it harder for many people who would no longer meet the criteria to get health, educational and social services, a new analysis suggests.
The definition is now being reassessed by an expert panel appointed by the American Psychiatric Association, which is completing work on the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the first major revision in 17 years. The D.S.M., as the manual is known, is the standard reference for mental disorders, driving research, treatment and insurance decisions. Most experts expect that the new manual will narrow the criteria for autism; the question is how sharply.
