By the right –wing, who has absolutely nothing. They see that the economy is improving. They see that the country, despite all their attempts at sabotaging this country, is finally moving in the right direction. They have a President who has taken foreign policy away from them as an issue. They have, as their ‘inevitable’ nominee, a clown who has taken both sides on every issue known to man. They have a ‘ base’ that despises their so-called ‘inevitable’ nominee, and express it at every turn. It is the ‘base’ that turns out, and in nominating Willard Romney, they are afraid that he will not ‘excite’ them. So, in order to ‘excite’ the base, they create this phony ‘ war on religion’ supposedly by the President.
The President’s ruling, with regards to birth control is quite simple: if you are an employer with so many employees, you must provide, as part of an overall women’s basic health package, free birth control. That’s it. It doesn’t go after religious institutions. The church can be against birth control all it wants; the federal government is not saying that it can’t. What the government IS saying is…
IF you are a religious entity, and you get into the employment business, guess what? You have to treat your employees the same as any other employer without religious affiliation.
That’s it.
IF the church doesn’t want to pay for birth control, then guess what, the church needs to get out of the business of being an employer. Nobody is forcing the church to be an employer. To provide insurance. Nobody. So, get out of those businesses, and you won’t have to be’ subject’ to following the laws like everyone else.
As for this ‘ conscience’ nonsense that they try to bring up, I feel about it, the same way I feel whenever I read a story about a pharmacist, who has found religion, and refuses to fill a prescription – almost always BIRTH CONTROL-…

There are some who are nervous about the President’s stance; his strong stance about this. I am not. I don’t care one whit about the President alienating the Catholic Bishops. The people who would side with them aren’t going to vote for President Obama in the first place. In the second place, I’m tired of all these WHITE MEN that I see proliferating the television set spreading lies about what the President’s intentions are, talking about what is, in essence – a woman’s issue.
I’m also glad about the President’s stance, because up until now, very few people paid attention to the deliberate WAR ON WOMEN that has been going on with the right-wing in this country. I believe Rachel Maddow is the only person on tv that has consistently been pointing out, state by state, the attempts to strip women of their reproductive rights in this country. THAT there is a WAR ON WOMEN, and yes, as preposterous as it sounds, CONTRACEPTION, is a battleground. Up until now, they could hide behind bullshyt things like ‘ sonograms before you have an abortion’, and the bogus ‘ personhood’ amendments, but their goal is to CONTROL WOMEN’S RIGHTS TO CONTROL THEIR OWN BODIES. That ‘personhood’ amendment nonsense- at the core, it’s to BAN CONTRACEPTION. Women might be ambivalent about abortion. It might make them squeamish , whichever side you fall on, but THIS?
THIS cuts to the core of a woman being able to decide FOR HERSELF, when she wants children, and how many and to keep the CONTROL for such issues, and her SEXUALITY IN HER OWN HANDS.
Birth Control is a WOMAN’S ISSUE – and women, Black, White, Latino, Asian, Religious, Non-religious, practice some form of birth control. And, it boggles my mind that women have to pay for it, while men can get VIAGRA FREE.

I hope that everyone understands that this is about the Catholic Church’s belief that contraception is an “evil.” Point blank. This is NOT an issue of religious freedom. What about my religious freedom to have ACCESS to FREE contraceptives if every other woman who has health insurance will be able to access this same benefit. Here’s what everyone should remember and be repeating NON-STOP:
“Contraception is an important, accepted, widely-used, and heretofore largely non-controversial aspect of modern life in America, which is why the president moved forward with plans to guarantee that all women have affordable access to birth control — a decision supported by a majority of Americans, including a majority of Catholics.” — that’s from the Progress Report and I think that it is a good one sentence response to this whole mess.
Finally, the Catholic Church doesn’t want to be told to provide free contraception as part of health care policies. Fine. It should provide two health policies one with contraception coverage and one without. Allow Catholics and the rest of us a CHOICE of which one fits best with our own bodies and life choices. This is one of the most infuriating assaults on my rights as a woman that has happened and I feel the same type of rage that Chips has expressed here. This will NOT stand. This cannot be allowed to stand.

The Obama administration’s rule requiring religious employers to cover birth control services is going to court after a Catholic TV network sued Thursday to block the mandate.
The order, which the Department of Health and Human Services finalized last month, eliminates a federal exemption that allows religion-affiliated institutions to opt out of the law requiring employers to cover contraceptive services in their health insurance packages.
Churches themselves would remain exempt, but when it goes into effect Aug. 1, the rule will require church-affiliated universities, hospitals, clubs and the like to cover “all [federally] approved forms of contraception.”

In his 2006 Massachusetts health care law, Mitt Romney embraced a virtually identical contraception coverage mandate as President Obama recently has, experts say, and as a result expanded access to birth control for hundreds of thousands of women. And Democrats really want you to know that.
“They are practically mirror images or each other,” John McDonough, a professor of public health at Harvard, said on a conference call organized by the Democratic National Committee. “They completely reflect each other.”
Romney has embraced the shocked, shocked tone of leading Republicans on this issue in recent days, and Democrats have acted swiftly to flag up inconsistencies in his position.
McDonough said the only distinction between the two is that Massachusetts’ exemption includes some Church-controlled primary schools — but not religious universities or hospitals. He added that while Romney’s law did impose a short-term moratorium on new mandated insurance benefits, Romney broke that moratorium 4 months after enactment by issuing a mandate unrelated to contraception.
Romney’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and for now he’s keeping the focus on Obama. He predicted Thursday that the President will be forced to “retreat” from his regulation or “suffer enormous consequence.”

Somehow, it’s turning out that this is not about “religious liberty” or the essential integrity of “Catholic institutions.”
Turns out it’s about enforcing the Church’s dimwitted stance on birth control generally throughout society:

Emboldened by enablers, the bishops have expanded their demands for exemptions from simply Catholic institutions to every business in America. They’ve been sitting back on their ermined duffs, believing that they were done so very wrong in the investigation of their crimes, and nursing the mother of all grudges, for over a decade. Now they’ve decided to strike back for the power they’ve lost. (That horrible Egan gossoon let the cat out of the bag yesterday.) There were a couple of ways all of this could have been avoided. One, as Lawrence O’Donnell pointed out last night, would have been through a single-payer health-care system. The other would have been to toss a whole lot of bishops in jail for conspiracy to obstruct justice, enough of them so their power to influence the secular law was destroyed forever. They needed to be humbled, unmercifully, until the hubris was wrung out of every damn one of them. Now, a woman working a low-income service industry job under the supervision of a Catholic boss will have her access to essential health-care truncated by a discredited encyclical to which no Catholic has paid any heed since the administration of Lyndon Johnson. These bastards needed to be broken, publicly, and into a thousand pieces that were scattered to the winds. Instead, they are “voices of conscience” again. It is to weep.

Firstly, I do agree that some religious institutions do serve the poor and needy. Does this mean they get to dictate my individual choice as to what I do with my UTERUS? HELL NO! You employ workers, you follow the laws like everyone else.

Seriously, Jueseppi, the STUPID burns deep. I don’t have time for this foolishness. My oldest daughter carried a baby for 5 months in her womb, the baby died due to lack of amniotic fluid. She loved that baby and wanted to carry it full term. She had to surgically abort it. HER CHOICE!
A dead baby is a dead baby. She and her hubby and the family grieved and wept for that child. Does that mean she doesn’t have the right to release the dead baby from her womb? GTFOH.
For me, LIFE BEGINS AT THE FIRST BREATH. I don’t give a rat’s ass who agrees or disagrees with this. Now she has a healthy baby boy whom she still had a few complications with teh amniotic fluid, and had to deliver him 2 weeks early.

Jobless claims in U.S. drop 15,000 to 358,000

Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had estimated claims would rise to 370,000. Claims from two weeks ago were revised up by 6,000 to 373,000. The four-week average of claims, meanwhile, dropped by 11,000 to 366,250, the lowest level since April 2008. The monthly average smoothes out seasonal quirks and provides a more accurate assessment of labor-market trends, economists say. Also on Thursday, the government said continuing claims increased by 64,000 to a seasonally adjusted 3.52 million in the week ended Jan. 28. Continuing claims are reported with a one-week lag. About 7.66 million people received some kind of state or federal benefit in the week ended Jan. 21, up 7,982 from the prior week. Total claims are reported with a two-week lag.
