    Mediscare,’ Republican style

By Dana Milbank, Published: March 16

Are Republicans ready to be trusted with the reins of power?

If you’re thinking of answering this in the affirmative, you might want to pause long enough to learn what transpired on the third floor of the Capitol on Thursday. There, four prominent Republican lawmakers announced their proposal to abolish Medicare — “sunset” was their pseudo-verb — even for those currently on the program or nearing retirement.

In Medicare’s place would be a private plan that would raise the eligibility age and shift trillions of dollars worth of health-care coverage from the government to the elderly. “This will be the new Medicare,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the proposal’s author, announced.

For years, Republicans have insisted that they would not end Medicare as we know it and that any changes to the program would not affect those in or near retirement. In the span of 20 minutes Thursday, they jettisoned both promises.

“The president and Harry Reid have been licking their chops for over three years now waiting for Republicans to actually try to deal with the large problems like Medicare,” Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) told reporters. “So, this is the moment they’ve been waiting for.”

He’s right about that. Don’t expect Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Mitch McConnell or John Boehner to take up the cry; the party leadership isn’t about to line up for abolishing the popular entitlement program. The real question is whether party leaders would be able to repel this conservative movement to end Medicare if Republicans gain control of the White House and Congress, where conservatives already dominate the GOP caucuses.

The end-Medicare sponsors are key figures: DeMint is the godfather of the Tea Party, and he was joined by Paul and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), two conservative rising stars. Completing the foursome was Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), an influential thinker. Two other Republican senators, Richard Burr of North Carolina and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, have introduced a somewhat related plan to deal with Medicare, and Rep. Paul Ryan’s House Republican budget would also privatize Medicare, though on a slower timetable.

But DeMint and his colleagues think the time to end Medicare is now — with a cold-turkey conversion to a private program, effective in 2014. “I think if Americans actually find out the truth about what we’re doing, it will be a very big positive for Republicans in the fall,” DeMint forecast.

Tea Party Leader Arrested For Kidnapping and Rape

    By: Sarah Jones
    March 17, 2012

Don’t tread on me? It is confirmed today that it was Tea Party leader Michael Kobulnicky who was arrested Thursday in San Diego for the alleged brutal kidnapping and rape of a 56 year old woman.

According to East County Magazine, Michael John Kobulnicky is accused of offering a woman a ride on February 25, but instead of taking her home, he drove to secluded island, pulled the victim out of the vehicle, sexually assaulted her, and left her in the sand. San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said, “He dragged her out of the car and sexually assaulted her pretty brutally.”

Kobulnicky, the public relations director for the San Diego Tea Party, is also the former regional director of the Southern California Conservative Party.

Romney, Inc.: Here Comes the I.P.O.

    by Steve M.
Sat Mar 17th, 2012 at 01:47:10 PM EST
Philip Rucker of The Washington Post reports that Mitt Romney’s campaign is making deals:

… Senior aides and surrogates — hoping to seize a moment when even some unfriendly Republicans are beginning to see Romney as inevitable — have spent the past several weeks making calls and visits to conservative leaders and activists who have resisted Romney’s candidacy.

Campaign manager Matt Rhoades has been wooing tea party organizers in general-election swing states and, in some cases, offering private meetings with Romney. Advisers with roots in the conservative movement, such as Bay Buchanan and Mark DeMoss, have been reaching out to evangelical leaders who are backing other candidates. Elected officials, led by Sen. Roy Blunt (Mo.), have been courting lawmakers and Beltway power-players who are not on board.

What could they possibly be discussing if not quid pro quos? That’s certainly what I’m picking up from this:

Among those being courted is Richard Land, a longtime leader of the Southern Baptist Convention….

Land said that after a private dinner with Romney last year at Acadiana, a Washington restaurant, Romney’s advisers have been in regular touch. Land said he recently told them that Romney could win over recalcitrant conservatives by picking Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) as his vice presidential running mate and previewing a few Cabinet selections: Santorum as attorney general, Gingrich as ambassador to the United Nations and John Bolton as secretary of state.

    And this:

After Romney met last month with [Sheldon] Adelson, one adviser said, some of his more pro-Israel surrogates have made regular contact with the Las Vegas casino mogul and have won his assurances that he would back Romney and give to the pro-Romney super PAC in the fall.

    And this:

Among the party leaders not on board with Romney is Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad. He seems like a natural Romney ally — the two are close and share similar political bases, and several Romney advisers, including Kaufman, are longtime friends of Branstad’s.

But Branstad, noting that he has publicly complimented Santorum, said he is unaligned for a strategic reason: to be a credible broker.

What does Branstad want? Bet Romney is seriously thinking about giving it to him. What does Adelson want? Well, we know his very right-wing views on Israel, and it looks as if Romney is reassuring him that those will be very much taken into consideration by Romney if he becomes president. We’re told some of what Richard Land wants — think Romney won’t cut deals if he fears that the religious right won’t unite behind him?

We know Romney has no core. We know Romney is desperate to have a united party behind him. And we know that most Republicans and the network of Republican interest groups are crazy.

So I think it’s safe to say that he’s going to promise to do what a lot of crazy people want if he becomes president.

    We Can’t Protect Ourselves Forever

I’ve been thinking along the same lines as Rick Perlstein lately. It’s not that conservatives are getting crazier; it’s that they’re getting more powerful. But I don’t think Perlstein is all that convincing in his rebuttal. All we have to do is change the terms. The Republican Party has become almost uniformly conservative. Therefore, the GOP has gone completely insane. Whether Perlstein means to reassure us or he wants to give us fair warning, the truth is still the same. One of our two viable political parties has lost its mind and we’re in big trouble as a result. We can’t win elections forever. Sooner or later, the Republicans will win the trifecta of holding the House, the Senate, and the presidency. And when that happens, we are going to be in a world of hurt. The whole world will be in a world of hurt.

Things are bad enough as it is. Look at any state that has the Republican trifecta right now and witness what the Republicans have been doing to unions, to public service employees, to women’s rights, to voter registration laws, and on immigration. Our organizations and constituencies are under sustained and merciless attack. You can see the corpse of ACORN, the congressional condemnation of MoveOn.org, the right-to-work status of Indiana, the disenfranchisement of minorities, the defunding of Planned Parenthood, the loss of collective bargaining rights for public unions…

You can see what this would mean on the national stage. But listen to their foreign policy rhetoric on Israel and Iran and Syria and many other hot spots. Listen to what they say about the United Nations and Europe and international organizations in general. If they were to seize power in this country, world peace and the whole international order would be imperiled.

Conservatism cannot be allowed to become ascendant. The Republican Party needs to heal itself or it must be replaced by another party. I don’t know how to fix the GOP. All I know how to do is to try to keep them at bay. But I know that we can’t keep them at bay forever.

    Controversies about the word “niggardly”

In the United States, there have been several controversies concerning the word “niggardly,” an adjective meaning “stingy” or “miserly,” due to its phonetic similarity to the racial slur “nigger.” The two words are etymologically unrelated.

Winning back the White House by any means necessary.

My governor here in Pistolvania has been on a roll lately. He told women to just close their eyes and enjoy a foreign object poking around in their vagina, and his new budget proposal cuts college funding by over 600 million dollars. Then, to top it off, he is aligning himself with the rest of the charlatans and politricksters in his party by signing off on a nefarious plot to win back the White House and disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters here in Pistolvania.

Site selling racist Obama stickers shut down
    Source: WFAA.com

One day after News 8 reported a web site selling racist bumper stickers about President Obama, the site has disappeared.

It was in part because of the efforts of two men who work in the same office, and stay in touch on Facebook.

Matt Houston and Ben Goerz office next to each other at the same company. Thursday, they didn’t even see each other. But they teamed up on Facebook to put a dent in racism.

Matt spotted a Facebook page for “Stumpy’s Stickers” and saw its racist bumper stickers using the ‘N-word’ in connection with President Obama. He posted a comment on Facebook.
