Bush wishes his name wasn’t attached to tax cuts

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Former President George W. Bush said Tuesday he wishes his name wasn’t so firmly attached to one of his administration’s signature pieces of legislation — the broad-based tax cuts set to expire at the end of this year.

“I wish they weren’t called the Bush tax cuts. If they were called someone else’s tax cuts, they’d be less likely to be raised,” he said in introductory remarks at a conference at the New York Historical Society.

(NewsCore) – Former President George W. Bush delivered a rare public speech Tuesday, in which he called for lower taxes and lower spending to get the ailing US economy back on track.

Now, correct me if I’m off base here, but didnt’s DUBYAH already tried this tactic? BUSH TAX CUTS, right? Geroge Bush, go back to Crawford, TX and clear the brush, MOFO!

Bush was speaking at the New York Historical Society at a George W. Bush Presidential Center’s conference on “Tax Policies For Four Percent Growth.”

“I don’t think it’s good for our country to undermine our president and I don’t intend to do so,” the former president said, explaining his decision to stay out of the media spotlight since leaving office.

Obama Pushes Buffett Rule, Strikes “Fairness” Theme
By Catherine Hollander and Sophie Quinton
    April 10, 2012 | 6:00 a.m.

An election-focused White House on Monday argued its proposed “Buffett rule” makes good economic sense, setting the stage for a week-long attack on Republican front-runner Mitt Romney’s tax plan that the president says benefits the rich at the expense of the middle class.

Democrats intend to use next week’s expected Senate vote on the Buffett rule to strike familiar partisan themes, painting Republicans as supporters of tax loopholes and low rates for the wealthy. And as part of that strategy, President Obama’s reelection team will use the Buffett rule debate and vote as a reference point for criticizing Romney and his economic plan.

“In part, this campaign will be a debate on this tax fairness issue, and we’re willing to have that debate,” Obama Campaign Manager Jim Messina told reporters on Monday.

The Buffett rule, floated by Obama last year, is embedded in a bill from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., that would establish a minimum effective tax rate of 30 percent for taxpayers who earn more than $1 million a year, including income from capital gains and dividends.

Wealthy Americans, who derive most of their income from investments rather than a regular paycheck, disproportionately benefit from the lower tax rate on investment income. Romney in January said he pays an effective tax rate of about 15 percent because his income is primarily derived from investments.

The White House and Obama’s campaign team are using that to argue the tax code, and Romney’s tax proposals, are inherently unfair.
