From TPM: “On a conference call with reporters Wednesday morning, campaign aides for Gov. Mitt Romney were unable to say affirmitively whether Romney supports the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
That law, the first bill Obama signed as president in January 2009. made it significantly easier for workers – particularly female workers – to file equal pay lawsuits.
The Romney camp said an answer to the question will be forthcoming.

Every Single One Of Romney’s Model Justices Voted Against Lilly Ledbetter

Earlier today, the Romney campaign responded to a question about whether their candidate supports the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act’s protection of equal pay for women with an awkward six second silence, followed by a promise to “get back” with an answer about whether or not Romney actually supports equal pay for women. The campaign has spent the rest of the day engaged in ham-handed damage control — first by putting out a statement saying that he is “not looking to change current law,” then by releasing statements by Republican congresswomen who previously voted against the Ledbetter Act.
Yet for all of Romney’s equivocating on whether or not he actually believes that women should be paid the same amount as men who do the exact same job, Romney cannot hide two important facts. The Ledbetter Act was only necessary because of a 5-4 Supreme Court decision which overruled decades of precedent protecting equal pay for equal work; and Romney promised to appoint more justices like the ones who voted against Lilly Ledbetter.
Last November, Romney listed four sitting Justices as the models he will follow if he gets to appoint a justice of his own — Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts. Every single one of these justices voted against Lilly Ledbetter and against equal pay for women in the workplace. Just like they have voted in favor of corporate immunity from the law on issues ranging from forced arbitration to enabling corporations to buy and sell elections.
But, of course, Congress overruled the Supreme Court’s error in the Ledbetter case when it passed the Ledbetter Act, and Romney now says that he doesn’t want to change “current law.” So doesn’t that mean women’s current rights to equal pay are safe?

Romney to Address NRA Weeks After Revealing He’s a Gun Owner
Mitt Romney will address the National Rifle Association‘s annual meeting later this week, a speech that comes at a crucial time for the candidate who is working to appeal to the conservative base of his party as he inches closer to clinching the Republican nomination.
Romney, who tells voters on the campaign trail that he believes “we have all the laws we need” in regard to gun control, revealed for the first time just over a month ago that he owns two shotguns. When asked about his stance on gun control during a town hall meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in February, Romney said, “I believe in the second amendment, I’ll protect the second amendment. I have guns myself.”
“Not going to tell you where they are. Don’t have them on myself either, all right,” he added.

Mitt Romney’s extreme positions on birth control, abortion, and women’s health have left him struggling to find support among women. Hoping to deflect the criticism, Romney is now claiming that it’s President Obama—not him—who is conducting a “war on women.” On Fox News, Romney falsely declared:
“Over 92 percent of the jobs lost under this President were lost by women. His policies have been really a war on women.”
WHAT A LIAR! And the GOP’s state policies to legislate our VAGINAS, MITT, is this supposed to make us feel like women are going on a shopping spree and stopping in for a vaggie probe to go?
Lilly Ledbetter took her fight to end unfair pay for women to the Supreme Court in 2007, only to be told that her pay discrimination claim was filed too late. Mrs. Ledbetter inspired the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, which makes sure women like her can effectively challenge unequal pay whenever they receive a discriminatory paycheck.
The Lilly Ledbetter Act was the first bill President Obama signed into law. When asked whether Mitt Romney supports the Act, Romney’s campaign replied,
“We’ll get back to you on that.”

The war over the `war on women’

With Romney’s campaign now arguing that Dems are the ones who are hurting women, thanks to Obama’s bad economic policies, Democrats pounced today on the news that Romney advisers were unable to say on a conference call with reporters whether he supports the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
According to audio of the call circluated by Dems, a Romney adviser, after being questioned about the law, said: “We’ll get back to you on that.”
Subsequently, Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul clarified: “He supports pay equity and is not looking to change current law.”
The question now is whether a President Romney would veto or refuse to sign any effort by a GOP-controlled Congress to repeal the Lily Ledbetter Act. I’ve asked for further clarification and will update if I hear back.
