Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey plans to announce as early as this afternoon that she is charging neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation.
It was not immediately clear what charge Zimmerman will face.
Martin, 17 and unarmed, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by Zimmerman, who said he was acting in self defense. Police in Sanford, Fla., where the shooting took place, did not charge Zimmerman, citing the state’s “stand your ground” law.
Corey told reporters Tuesday night that she would hold a news conference about the case within 72 hours. A news release from her office said the event will be held in Sanford or Jacksonville, Fla.

Now that George Zimmerman has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, we can expect to see an even greater focus on the “legalese,” so to speak. His (new) attorney indicated that Zimmerman will plead not guilty to the 2nd-degree murder charge; by Florida law, per the state’s standard jury instructions. that means special prosecutor Angela Corey is alleging that when he shot Trayvon, he did so with a “depraved mind,” and “without regard to human life.”
That indicates that Corey didn’t buy Zimmerman’s claims of self-defense in the shooting. It remains to be seen whether or not Zimmerman’s defense in court will claim Florida’s “stand your ground” law applies to him. Still, this is just the beginning, and it’s likely that the NRA-backed Florida law and its dozens of legislative descendants, fathered in part by ALEC, will remain a front-page topic.

More than 2 million people joined our call for Zimmerman’s arrest. We are so much closer to justice with the decision to bring charges against our son’s killer. We feel less alone knowing that so many people stood with our family during this impossible time.
When Trayvon was just nine, he ran into a burning house to save his father’s life. He may be gone, but he is still our hero. We are so thankful to all of you who fought to honor his memory.

White America can walk to the store without fear of being hunted down. White America can count on justice and a nation grieving at the loss of White life. We aren’t Trayvon Martin, we are George Zimmerman: presumed innocent until proven innocent.
I want you to close your eyes for a second, and imagine that your son or daughter, sister or brother, granddaughter or grandson, ventured to the corner store for some Skittles and tea but never returned? Can you imagine if Peter or Jan were gunned down right around the corner from your house and the police didn’t notify you right away? Can you imagine if little Sydney or Bobby sat in the morgue for days as you searched to find out what happened them? Can you even imagine the police letting the perpetrator go or the news media remaining silent? Can you even fathom learning about background and drug tests on your child? Can you imagine the news media demonizing your child, blaming your child for his own death?

Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey plans to charge George Zimmerman in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin as early as Wednesday afternoon, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Post’s Sari Horwitz.
It was not immediately known what charge Zimmerman would face for the shooting death of the unarmed teenager in Sanford, Fla. last month.
Zimmerman has maintained that he was acting in self-defense, while the attorney for Martin’s family says the shooting was racially-motivated.
The two attorneys who had been representing Zimmerman withdrew from the case Tuesday, saying he had taken actions without consulting them and that they did not know where he is.
The charges that Zimmerman could face include second-degree murder and manslaughter.
