Perhaps draft dodger Mitt Romney thinks he can bully Ohio voters into voting for him in November?

In complete disregard of the will of Ohio voters expressed last year through the referendum process, the Republican legislature is attempting to remove from the vast majority of voters — including veterans of our armed services — the early voting rights they enjoyed in 2008. Today on Facebook, Mitt Romney claims that the Obama campaign is trying to “undermine” the ability of members of the military to vote in Ohio:
President Obama’s lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state’s early voting period is an outrage. The brave men and women of our military make tremendous sacrifices to protect and defend our freedoms, and we should do everything we can to protect their fundamental right to vote. I stand with the fifteen military groups that are defending the rights of military voters, and if I’m entrusted to be the commander-in-chief, I’ll work to protect the voting rights of our military, not undermine them.

The Obama campaign filed a lawsuit to make sure every Ohioan has early voting rights, including military members and their families.
What happened to early voting in Ohio?
- In the 2008 presidential election, more than 93,000 Ohioans utilized early voting in the three days before the election.
- Earlier this year, Ohio’s GOP-controlled legislature passed an election reform law that cut off early voting three days before the election.
- More than 300,000 Ohioans signed a petition to secure a referendum on the November 6th ballot in order to repeal this law. Rather than face the referendum, the legislature, at the urging of Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted, decided to repeal the law.
- However, “in an unusual turn of events,” Ohio Republicans managed to keep a technical provisionof the bill that shortens the early voting process and eliminates the last three days of early voting for all citizens except military personnel and their families.
Mitt Romney knows that President Obama is leading him in the polls in OHIO. What else does he and his campaign have in their bag of filthy, disgusting tricks, but to distract from the FACT that Mitt Romney has not released just his 2010 INCOME TAXE RETURNS, and a slew of other financials records, in attempts to not release YEARS of tax returns.

This weekend, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney launched on attack an the Obama campaign that is unambiguously based on a lie. On his Facebook page, Romney posted a note directly accusing the re-election effort of working to undermine the voting rights of military members in Ohio:
President Obama’s lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state’s early voting period is an outrage. The brave men and women of our military make tremendous sacrifices to protect and defend our freedoms, and we should do everything we can to protect their fundamental right to vote. The background is that, while all Ohio voters used to enjoy in-person early voting privileges for three days, Republicans in the state legislature this year restricted that right to military members only. The Obama campaign subsequently filed a lawsuit asking that the privileges be extended to all voters:
Plaintiffs bring this lawsuit to restore in-person early voting for all Ohioans during the three days prior to Election Day—a right exercised by an estimated 93,000 Ohioans in the last presidential election. Ohio election law, as currently enacted by the State of Ohio and administered by Defendant Ohio Secretary of State, arbitrarily eliminates early voting during the three days prior to Election Day for most Ohio voters, a right previously available to all Ohio voters.

The Morning Plum: The Romney campaign’s disgraceful falsehood about military voting

Willfully misleading attacks from Mitt Romney and his campaign aren’t new: “You didn’t build that” and “Obama’s apology tour” and so on have been a staple for the Romney camp. But the latest from the Romney camp just may be their lowest attack yet:
Despite a spate of headlines out of Ohio that push back on the notion that President Obama’s campaign is trying to strip military members of voting rights in the upcoming election, Mitt Romney’s campaign is drilling down on the claim.

The article cited in the quote, from Buzzfeed, points out that while fraternal military groups are opposing the Obama campaign’s lawsuit, the groups “make no suggestion that the Democrats’ suit would restrict Ohio soldiers’ votes.” Their objection is purely “that the Obama move might set a precedent that giving soldiers special consideration is unconstitutional.” Despite the plain text of the various motions, the Romney camp is calling the Obama lawsuit “despicable” and an “outrage.” Not only are Republicans misleading voters, but they’re using our soldiers to do so.
Such a disgraceful maneuver is just the latest sign that the Romney campaign has an increasingly weak hand. Yes, their fundraising remains strong, and Obama’s behind in cash on hand, but otherwise the fundamentals of the race look very bad for the former governor. As Dan Balz pointed out yesterday, hispoor performance in July “has only raised the stakes for what the presumptive Republican presidential nominee needs to do in August.” And as Peggy Noonan wrote over the weekend, the cliche that the race doesn’t matter until after Labor Day is no longer true: truly undecided voters are only four to five percent of the electorate already, and voters who might change their minds make up only a little over ten percent.

Why Does Mitt Romney Want To Restrict Voting Rights For More Than 900,000 Ohio Veterans?

When I read stories this weekend that said the Obama campaign was suing to restrict the voting rights of military in Ohio, my blood got boiling. Of course, Think Progress has already documented that story, inflamed by the Romney campaign, is patently false. In fact, the Obama campaign was suing to block an Ohio law which restricts a very successful early voting program in the state. The President’s campaign was trying to keep expanded voting rights in place for everyone, military included. So, why am I still so disturbed?
Because Mitt Romney, by supporting the Ohio law that would do away with three days of early voting for all but those covered under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voter Act (‘UOCAVA’), is supporting the restriction of voting rights for as many as 913,000 Ohio veterans. This includes military retirees with over 20 years of service and multiple deployments. In short, Mitt Romney supports efforts to make voting more difficult for the very people who have put their lives on the line after swearing an oath to uphold our Constitution and democracy.
Once you leave the military, you are no longer covered by UOCAVA. Your voting rights are the same as any civilian. That means the early voting law which Mitt Romney wants to undo, provided hundreds of thousands of Ohio veterans with more of an opportunity to vote. By all accounts, Ohio voters liked and used the early voting law. In 2008, nearly one-third of all ballots was cast under the early voting measures, surely many of them veterans.

Frankly, at this point it’s getting tiresome to keep pointing out Willard “Mitt” Romney’s blatant, pathological lying on any and all subjects.

Anyway, now serial liar Willard “Mitt” Romney has stooped to yet another new low, even by his own bottom-of-the-barrel ethical standards. I’ve posted (on the “flip”) the Obama campaign’s statement on Romney’s outrageously false attack against President Obama for attempting to PROTECT people’s voting rights in Ohio.
The facts, as opposed to Romney’s lies, are clear. Earlier this year, Ohio’s Republican-controlled legislature passed a law that cut off early voting three days before the election (it had previously been 35 days), except for military voters. This outrageous, blatantly partisan law led 300,000 Ohioans to sign a petition to put a referendum on the November ballot, repealing this monstrosity.

So what does the Romney campaign do? That’s right, they maliciously and blatantly lie, twisting the facts 180 degrees to somehow claim that it’s not the Republicans working overtime to deny peoples’ rights to vote in Ohio and around the country, but actually it’s the people fighting back – in this case, the Obama campaign – who are the true villains.

Romney has gotten away with lying his entire life, Ametia. He thought he could do the same thing to PBO and get no push back. This tells me that he has bought into the RW nuts’ idea of who/what the president is. They’ve been putting words in his mouth and thoughts in his mind since the first time they heard his name. The one thing they haven’t tried to do is get to know him. I think the president made a decision a long time ago to not let them get too close to him because he knows what snakes the republicans are. I remember during the debt limit/deficit talks that Eric Cantor left a meeting and told the press that PBO had ended the meeting in a state of anger. The real reason the meeting ended was because the president had another commitment. Cantor lied to score political points, but the president got his azz in the next meeting. Cantor asked the president for his plan, PBO asked him with whom was he negotiating, him or Boehner and informed him that Boehner had his plan. At the meeting after this one, Cantor didn’t open his frigging mouth. While republicans are playing games, PBO is ten steps ahead of them. He has their butts in a sling that they’re having problems trying to get out of. He has Romney in a position where the only thing he can do is lie. Romney was so sure he could rollover PBO, but he’s learning that the president has far more experience in politics than he does. It’s been very disheartening for Romney to
discover that what worked at Bain doesn’t work in the real world. At Bain he could tell a lie and no one would challenge him, but in dealing with PBO he has discovered that he
has a formidable foe who always plays to win.
