Biography
Dubbed “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums.
Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz and imitate every instrument in an orchestra. She worked with all the jazz greats, from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Nat King Cole, to Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman. (Or rather, some might say all the jazz greats had the pleasure of working with Ella.)
She performed at top venues all over the world, and packed them to the hilt. Her audiences were as diverse as her vocal range. They were rich and poor, made up of all races, all religions and all nationalities. In fact, many of them had just one binding factor in common – they all loved her.
Humble but happy beginnings
Ella Jane Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Va. on April 25, 1917. Her father, William, and mother, Temperance (Tempie), parted ways shortly after her birth. Together, Tempie and Ella went to Yonkers, N.Y, where they eventually moved in with Tempie’s longtime boyfriend Joseph Da Silva. Ella’s half-sister, Frances, was born in 1923 and soon she began referring to Joe as her stepfather.
To support the family, Joe dug ditches and was a part-time chauffeur, while Tempie worked at a laundromat and did some catering. Occasionally, Ella took on small jobs to contribute money as well. Perhaps naïve to the circumstances, Ella worked as a runner for local gamblers, picking up their bets and dropping off money.
Their apartment was in a mixed neighborhood, where Ella made friends easily. She considered herself more of a tomboy, and often joined in the neighborhood games of baseball. Sports aside, she enjoyed dancing and singing with her friends, and some evenings they would take the train into Harlem and watch various acts at the Apollo Theater.
A rough patch
In 1932, Tempie died from serious that injuries she received in a car accident. Ella took the loss very hard. After staying with Joe for a short time, Tempie’s sister Virginia took Ella home. Shortly afterward Joe suffered a heart attack and died, and her little sister Frances joined them.
Unable to adjust to the new circumstances, Ella became increasingly unhappy and entered into a difficult period of her life. Her grades dropped dramatically, and she frequently skipped school. After getting into trouble with the police, she was taken into custody and sent to a reform school. Living there was even more unbearable, as she suffered beatings at the hands of her caretakers.
Eventually Ella escaped from the reformatory. The 15-year-old found herself broke and alone during the Great Depression, and strove to endure.
Never one to complain, Ella later reflected on her most difficult years with an appreciation for how they helped her to mature. She used the memories from these times to help gather emotions for performances, and felt she was more grateful for her success because she knew what it was like to struggle in life.
“What’s she going to do?”
In 1934 Ella’s name was pulled in a weekly drawing at the Apollo and she won the opportunity to compete in Amateur Night. Ella went to the theater that night planning to dance, but when the frenzied Edwards Sisters closed the main show, Ella changed her mind. “They were the dancingest sisters around,” Ella said, and she felt her act would not compare.
Once on stage, faced with boos and murmurs of “What’s she going to do?” from the rowdy crowd, a scared and disheveled Ella made the last minute decision to sing. She asked the band to play Hoagy Carmichael’s “Judy,” a song she knew well because Connee Boswell’s rendition of it was among Tempie’s favorites. Ella quickly quieted the audience, and by the song’s end they were demanding an encore. She obliged and sang the flip side of the Boswell Sister’s record, “The Object of My Affections.”
Off stage, and away from people she knew well, Ella was shy and reserved. She was self-conscious about her appearance, and for a while even doubted the extent of her abilities. On stage, however, Ella was surprised to find she had no fear. She felt at home in the spotlight.
“Once up there, I felt the acceptance and love from my audience,” Ella said. “I knew I wanted to sing before people the rest of my life.”
In the band that night was saxophonist and arranger Benny Carter. Impressed with her natural talent, he began introducing Ella to people who could help launch her career. In the process he and Ella became lifelong friends, often working together.
Fueled by enthusiastic supporters, Ella began entering – and winning – every talent show she could find. In January 1935 she won the chance to perform for a week with the Tiny Bradshaw band at the Harlem Opera House. It was there that Ella first met drummer and bandleader Chick Webb. Although her voice impressed him, Chick had already hired male singer Charlie Linton for the band. He offered Ella the opportunity to test with his band when they played a dance at Yale University.
“If the kids like her,” Chick said, “she stays.”
Despite the tough crowd, Ella was a major success, and Chick hired her to travel with the band for $12.50 a week.
Jazzing things up
In mid 1936, Ella made her first recording. “Love and Kisses” was released under the Decca label, with moderate success. By this time she was performing with Chick’s band at the prestigious Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom, often referred to as “The World’s Most Famous Ballroom.”
Shortly afterward, Ella began singing a rendition of the song, “(If You Can’t Sing It) You Have to Swing It.” During this time, the era of big swing bands was shifting, and the focus was turning more toward bebop. Ella played with the new style, often using her voice to take on the role of another horn in the band. “You Have to Swing It” was one of the first times she began experimenting with scat singing, and her improvisation and vocalization thrilled fans. Throughout her career, Ella would master scat singing, turning it into a form of art.
In 1938, at the age of 21, Ella recorded a playful version of the nursery rhyme, “A-Tisket, A-Tasket.” The album sold 1 million copies, hit number one, and stayed on the pop charts for 17 weeks. Suddenly, Ella Fitzgerald was famous.

Romney Smears Obama, Falsely Claims He Filed Lawsuit To Restrict Military Voting In Ohio

Today on Facebook, Mitt Romney claims that the Obama campaign is trying to “undermine” the ability of members of the military to vote in Ohio:
President Obama’s lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state’s early voting period is an outrage. The brave men and women of our military make tremendous sacrifices to protect and defend our freedoms, and we should do everything we can to protect their fundamental right to vote. I stand with the fifteen military groups that are defending the rights of military voters, and if I’m entrusted to be the commander-in-chief, I’ll work to protect the voting rights of our military, not undermine them.
This certainly sounds outrageous, but it is not true. Since 2005, Ohio has had in person early-voting in the three days prior to the election. This year, however, the Republican legislature in Ohio eliminated early voting during this period, except for members of the military. The Obama lawsuit is attempting to restore voting rights for all Ohioans, not restrict them for the military or any other group. From the Obama lawsuit, filed in federal court:

After Bronze Medal Comes Senior Year
In an American high school, a new jacket or the newest cellphone can be a status symbol. Lia Neal will arrive for her senior year at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan with something tough to trump: an Olympic medal.
Neal won it Saturday night at London Aquatics Centre, swimming the third leg of the women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay. Neal and her teammates — Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy and Allison Schmitt — took the bronze in 3 minutes 34.24 seconds, finishing behind Australia (3:33.15) and the Netherlands (3:33.79).
“Everything was just so beyond my expectations,” Neal said.
“To swim the morning relay was just so much fun — it was definitely not as nerve-racking as I thought it would be — and then to be given the chance to swim on the night relay was even more fun,” she said, referring to the morning preliminaries and the final at night. “And to get a bronze on top of all of that was just a cherry on top.”
The race, on the first night of the swimming competition, brought Neal’s Olympics to an end, but not before it helped Natalie Coughlin reach a milestone. Coughlin did not swim in the final, but her participation in the preliminaries meant that she got a medal, too. It was her 12th, tying her with Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson for the most by an American woman.
“I’m just so happy that we all chipped in and went as fast as we could to help Natalie achieve this,” Neal said.
For Neal, the fun is just beginning. She will not swim again in London but said she would remain in the Olympic Village to cheer on her teammates and see some other sports. Odds are she will be star-struck. Told that the first lady, Michelle Obama, had gone from Serena Williams’s tennis match to the pool to see her swim, Neal giggled like the schoolgirl she is.
“She was here?” Neal said, her eyes opening wide. “That’s so amazing. I wish I could have seen her.”

Give ‘Em Hell, Harry

It’s true that Harry Reid can be a bit blunt, but when you look at his history of insulting people, he’s always completely correct. He said George W. Bush was a loser. Well, if he were not a loser, he’d be introducing Romney at the Republican convention just as Bill Clinton intends to do for Obama at the Democratic convention. Reid called Bill Frist “amateurish” in his handling of the Senate. Who can dispute that Frist was over his head as majority leader? Back when Alan Greenspan was practically sainted, Harry Reid called him “one of the biggest political hacks” in Washington. Boy howdy, was he ever proven correct about that one! Five years ago, Reid said that Mitt Romney is “kind of a joke” and called the chairman of the Joint Chiefs “incompetent.” I see no reason to revise those remarks today. As for saying that he “can’t stand John McCain,” it’s no secret that John McCain has few friends in the Senate.
I don’t see why giving an honest assessment of people’s capabilities and characters is supposed to be some kind of flaw.

Liberals don’t want to jinx it. It terrifies the right. And the press would prefer a nail-biter. But the fact is that finding Romney’s path to victory is getting harder every day.
There’s a secret lurking behind everything you’re reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know—or should—but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to draw an inside straight like you’ve never ever seen in a movie to win this thing. This is especially true now that it seems as if Pennsylvania isn’t really up for grabs. Romney’s paths to 270 are few.
First, let’s discuss Pennsylvania. There has been good reason for Democrats to sweat this state. True, Obama won it handily in 2008, by 10 points. But it’s a state that is older and whiter and more working-class than most of America. Obama benefited from all the unique circumstances of 2008 that helped him across the country, but if ever there were a state where the “well, we gave the black guy a chance and he blew it” meme might catch on, it’s the Keystone State.
But the jobless rate there is 7.5 percent, well below the national average. Democratic voter registration has held its own. The Philly suburbs have grown. And this odious voter ID law is facing meaningful challenges. A hearing on the law’s validity has just been concluded. A state judge says he’ll rule on the law’s constitutionality the week of Aug. 13. It sounds as if the law’s opponents made a stronger case at the hearing than its supporters. In any case, the losing side will appeal to the state Supreme Court.

Gabby Douglas’ proud airman father has watched her from afar

While Gabby Douglas has been preparing to capture American hearts in the London Olympics, her father has been serving in the Air Force.
The 4-foot-11, 16-year-old gymnast nicknamed the “Flying Squirrel” made history Thursday when she won the gold medal in the women’s all-around competition. Her father, Air Force Staff Sgt. Timothy Douglas, who has served multiple deployments throughout her childhood, was not on hand. But he first saw in June what the world has witnessed this week in his talented and charismatic daughter.

“There’s an exuberance,” Douglas told the Des Moines Register in late June, after surprising his daughter at the Olympic Trials in San Jose. “There’s a feeling that you can’t describe.”
For much of the last several years, Douglas, who has done three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, has made do with YouTube videos of his daughter’s routines as he served with the 203rd Red Horse civil engineering squadron, either in Virginia Beach or in Kandahar. Although his last tour ended in October of 2011, when he showed up to see her qualify for the U.S. Olympic team, it was one of the rare times he has seen Gabby compete in person.
Gabby, who began training at age six, was just nine when her father was first called up. Two years ago, she moved from her family in Virginia Beach to live with a sponsoring family in Des Moines, Iowa, where she trained with Liang Chow, who previously coached Shawn Johnson, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist. But the girl who did perfect cartwheels at age 3 says praying for her father’s safety has been a regular part of her life, almost like her training regimen.
“I just had to pray to God just to keep him safe and tell the angels to keep my dad safe and come home,” she told NBC.

Gabby Douglas, Gold-Medal Olympic Gymnast, Rockets to Stardom
Gabby Douglas, the newly minted American sweetheart and Olympic champion in the all-around gymnastics competition, returned to the athletes’ village on Thursday to end her night by doing what every teenager would do: She Googled herself.
There, filling the computer screen, was her name again and again, and photos of her, again and again.
“Everything popped up,” the 16-year-old Douglas said with her trademark giggle. “ ‘Gabby Douglas wins the all-around. Gabby Douglas makes history.’ It definitely was an amazing thing!”
Douglas, a 4-foot-11, 94-pound package of rocket-fueled energy, on Thursday became the first black gymnast to win the individual all-around Olympic gold medal. She also became the first American to win both the all-around and team events at the same Olympics, and only the fourth American woman to win the all-around title.
But Douglas said the gravity of that had not hit her. She forgot to bring her gold medals to an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show Friday, leaving them “somewhere in her room.” Later, she was surprised when a fan driving by slammed on the brakes, stopping to beg Douglas for a photo.
“What are you doing?” Douglas said she was thinking when the fan stopped. “Oh, yeah, I remember now. Sure.”

Now We Know, Republicans Want to Raise Our Taxes

It is often stated as fact that Democrats always want to raise taxes and Republicans always want to lower taxes.
We now know this to be false.
Nearly every Republican in the Senate, nearly every Republican in the House and the Republican nominee for President Mitt Romney, all support tax plans which would cut taxes for the 2% of households that earn more than $250,000, but also raise taxes on millions of Americans among the poor and middle class.
Meanwhile, Democrats recently passed tax cuts designed for the poor and middle class only, in President’s Obama recession-stopping Recovery Act.
And Congress could have easily extended both the Bush and Obama tax cuts for those in the 98% … if the House Republicans didn’t just reject the Senate Democratic bill.
Republicans have been alluding to their belief that rich people pay too much and poor people pay too little for some time, without being blunt enough to get into trouble. “47% of Americans don’t pay income taxes” they cry, “broaden the base.”

Is the “nanny state” in Montgomery working?
It was right there on the label of the white tuna salad, an outlawed ingredient flaunted for anyone to see: “partially hydrogenated soybean oil.”
A customer filed a formal complaint with the authorities. An investigation was launched. A Montgomery County health inspector arrived on the scene, a deli in Potomac. He reviewed the evidence and handed down his verdict: The fish was guilty.
“Wrote them up for a labeling violation and made them aware that Montgomery County is a Trans Fat Free county,” he later wrote in his report. This time the deli would get off with a warning.
The banning of trans fat was among a series of controversial county laws passed in recent years, creating vigorous fights over the reach and role of government and testing the boundaries between personal liberties and the collective good.
Laws such as requiring calorie counts on menus, and requiring domestic workers to be offered a job contract, reinforced the county’s reputation as being one of the most progressive areas in the region, a county that, as one critic said, “loves to act as God.”

It Struck a Chord

My piece on poor Mitt Romney went viral, with over 4,000 shares of the orange version and 1,300 shares of the green. It spent most of the day atop the Daily Kos recommended diary list, and then Kos posted about it on the front-page. It obviously resonated with a lot of Democrats. And it’s not hard to see why.
What I was trying to say without explicitly saying it, is that we suffer from a very real double standard. Our leaders suffer really calumnious attacks on a routine basis. Absolutely cruel and baseless things are said about us constantly. And it’s routine. It’s like an unremarkable vase that sits in the corner for years on end without being noticed. And the most important thing about these attacks is that they don’t even have a shred of truthfulness to them. Half the time, the charges violate some cardinal rule of logic. And the press doesn’t care.
But let a Democrat make an under-substantiated charge, and all of a sudden even Jon Stewart gets on his high horse and accuses that Democrat of being a terrible person. People on the left are sick of this double standard. We want our leaders protected by the press.
Let’s compare a few events. We have witnessed a couple of dozen elected Republican officials express open doubt about whether or not the president is a legitimate U.S. citizen. They have no basis for saying that. None. It’s as made up as my assertion that Romney is an atheist who pretended to be a Mormon so he could skip the Vietnam War. It’s a lie. I had absolutely no basis for saying that about Romney.
Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter, on the other hand, pointed out truthfully that Mitt Romney either lied on his financial disclosure forms, thereby committing the felony of perjury, or he lied about when he stopped being the CEO of Bain Capital.
The Republicans who challenged Obama’s birth certificate paid no significant price for it, but Ms. Cutter was tsk-tsked six ways to Sunday for her statement.
“Oh my God, they accused me of being a felon,” Romney cried, and people from all media corners raced to his defense. But you can accuse Obama of lying about his citizenship and his religious beliefs without anyone really caring.
People are tired of it. It couldn’t be more obvious that Mitt Romney is hiding something in his tax returns that would render him useless as a viable presidential candidate.
We had a commenter here today who made a great point. He asked us to imagine what would happen if Romney picked a running mate but then told us that he couldn’t reveal their identity because we’d just use that as an excuse to distort their record.
Obviously, we’d laugh Romney out of town. But that’s really no different than what he’s trying to do with his taxes. He’s literally telling us that he won’t release the information because we’d never elect him if he did. Would you sign a contract with a person like that? Would you sign a four-year deal with Romney when he won’t even let you read the contract?
So, here you have a guy who is clearly trying to defraud the electorate in plain sight, and when people call him on it, they get criticized. But when people spend years investigating the sex life of a president and accuse him of murder and rape and drug-dealing, and then impeach him over a dalliance, that’s not a problem?
My article was really rather simple. It asked people to imagine what it would be like if we used the tactics of the right. Because, no, what Harry Reid and Stephanie Cutter have done with regard to Romney’s business experience and taxes is in no way equivalent to accusing this president of being a socialist, Kenyan, Muslim, or accusing the prior Democratic president of being a murdering, raping, cocaine-dealer.
It struck a chord for a reason. It needed to be said.

When Gabby Douglas won her historic gymnastics gold, her mother wept, her siblings screamed — and her father was stationed somewhere in Afghanistan.
The 16-year-old’s dramatic ascent to the top of her sport came despite her parents’ crumbling marriage and a long-distance relationship with her father, Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Timothy Douglas.
Gabby hadn’t seen her dad in two years when he surprised the teen by popping into the U.S. Olympic trials in late June.
And he was far from London when the teen known as the “Flying Squirrel” vaulted into America’s hearts with a second gold medal by winning the all-around title.
Timothy Douglas is stationed in Afghanistan as part of the Air National Guard, 203rd Red Horse Squadron.
While he couldn’t make it to the London Games, Douglas did fly into San Jose, Calif., to watch his daughter earn her spot on the U.S. team earlier in the summer.
At the time, Gabby recalled hearing her name coming down from the crowd at the trials. She looked up to see her father waving a U.S. flag with her name written across the stripes.
“There’s a feeling that you can’t describe,” the elder Douglas told the Des Moines Register after the reunion. “I just missed her so much.”

1. he paid more in tithes to the Mormon Church than in taxes to the country he wants to be elected President.
2. Business dealings partnering with the Mormon Church – using the church status to get out of paying taxes( this one came to me after that Mormon, INC story folks linked to a couple of weeks ago)
3. how he gave his sons 100 million dollars – TAX FREE

If tax shelters are deemed ‘ unacceptable’, that friggin’ means they are ILLEGAL. And, if he’d do ILLEGAL tax shelters for a company, why wouldn’t I think Willard wouldn’t do ILLEGAL tax shelters for himself?

Rachel Maddow has a series of segments this week that I think should be seen together. In them, Maddow dissects Willard and the tax returns, showing clearly that he tried this same program in 2002. She also shows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, how Willard LIED in 2002, pointing out to the rest of the MSM, that Willard has given up the right to be given the ‘ benefit of the doubt’, when it was obvious that in 2002, he lied through his teeth. Here’s a hint, Willard pulled the old ‘ retroactive’ card back then too. How come ‘ retroactivity’ comes into play when Willard is caught in, what would be considered FELONIES with other folks? How many folks get to LIE to GOVERNMENT ENTITIES and don’t get charged?

Why Harry Reid keeps attacking Mitt Romney
“What Republicans don’t get is the more they fire back at Reid, the more he will fight,” said another top Reid confidante. “And in the end, what will the topic be? Romney and his taxes.”
Reid initially acknowledged to The Huffington Post that he’s not “certain” that the information is correct. But that hasn’t stopped him from repeating the charge to Nevada reporters, saying on the Senate floor that the “word is out” that Romney hadn’t paid taxes for a decade. He expanded on his allegation in a lengthy statement Thursday night that accused Romney of “hiding something” by not releasing more of his tax returns.
“He’s doing what he always does,” said Jon Ralston, a top political analyst in Nevada, “which is to say the things that most partisans and elected officials only dream about saying.”
