John “THE ARTFUL DODGER” McCain Dodges When Asked If He Embraces Ryan Budget
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) dodged a question on “Fox News Sunday” about whether he embraces vice presidential pick Paul Ryan’s budget, instead evoking Ryan’s work with Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) on Medicare.
“Right now, I guess we have to ask, what is the plan that Democrats have besides negative attack ads,” he said.
McCain said it’s “appropriate” for Mitt Romney to hedge on parts of the Ryan plan.

What Wisconsin Journalists Want You To Know About Paul Ryan
Local Wisconsin reporters say that as the national media begins to scrutinize Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) life and career following his selection as Mitt Romney’s running mate, they may overlook details such as his inside-the-Beltway focus, the high level of unemployment in his hometown, and his family connection to the natural gas industry.
In the early stages of such reviews, news outlets are often dependent on the campaigns themselves, prior national coverage of the candidate, and even Wikipedia for insight and can miss the kind of information local reporters who have covered the vice presidential selection for years may know best.
Media Matters went to some of those local reporters in Wisconsin and asked for their take on the information voters, and reporters, need most but may miss as they look at Ryan’s career.
One issue most journalists raised was that Ryan left Wisconsin at a young age and climbed the political ladder in Washington. One local scribe compared him to Dick Cheney in that regard, stating both men rose to the top by focusing on D.C. connections and not in home state political circles.
“The way to understand him is he is Dick Cheney, he is a guy who went to Washington as soon as he could, rooted himself in the establishment, got himself elected as soon as he could and became a major player,” said John Nichols, an associate editor at the Capital Times in Madison. “He is Dick Cheney with very good hair.”
Other Wisconsin news people who have covered Ryan describe him as likeable and accessible to reporters, but something of an unknown even to local voters who re-elect him regularly despite his hometown being hit by hard economic times.
Scott Angus, editor of The Janesville Gazette, the daily newspaper in Ryan’s hometown, described Ryan’s fellow residents as having mixed views on their representative.
“The people of Janesville are probably as divided about Paul Ryan as the rest of the country,” Angus said Saturday, hours after Ryan was announced as Romney’s choice. “A lot of people would view [Ryan’s opinions] as pretty conservative and pretty far to the right and that does not sit well with a lot of people in his district.”
Angus, a 21-year editor of the paper, added, “He has lived here, but he has not worked here much, he has been in Washington working on his career path. I think a lot of people are surprised because he has always said his plans were not to rise to national office. He never had any elected office until he was elected to Congress.”
But Janesville’s recent past is also important, several reporters said, citing the town’s difficult economic situation, sparked by the closure of a General Motors plant in 2009.
“Their unemployment rate is double digits,” said Jeff Flynt, a news reporter at WTAQ Radio in Green Bay. “For a state that is trying to turn around the business aspects of the state the fact that Janesville unemployment continues to be pretty high and you have a guy who is known pretty well nationally and has not found a way to help the plant or put something in its place, that may catch” the national media’s attention.
He added, “Paul’s district has no big city in it. It is small cities, small towns and farms. He has had a congressional career that has gone largely under the radar.”
“There are people in his district shocked to find out he was a big player on budget stuff. He has been able to define his own story.He didn’t really spend any time in state politics and right out of college he went right into interning. While he is a Wisconsin congressman, he is not somebody who came up through the state ranks.”
Columnist Dan Bice of the Journal Sentinel in Milwaukee, offered a similar view, saying “His hometown has been hurt economically, GM pulled out of there and some have said he has not done a lot to help out. The recession has hit Janesville as much as anywhere.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics data on Janesville finds unemployment spiked to more than 15 percent when the plant closed and was above 10 percent as recently as February.

Picking Ryan Wasn’t Bold; It Was Insane

Although Paul Ryan undoubtedly has some political and personal skills and will inject some much-needed energy into the Romney campaign, it isn’t too hard to figure out why Democrats are elated about his selection. First, let’s look at what picking House Republican Paul Ryan didn’t do.
1. It didn’t help Romney with women.
2. It didn’t help Romney make any inroads with blacks, Latinos, Asians, or Muslims.
3. It didn’t boost confidence in a Romney administration’s preparedness to handle foreign policy, a la Dick Cheney.
4. It didn’t force the Obama administration to defend new territory.
5. It didn’t deflect attention from Romney’s tax returns/avoidance.
6. It didn’t help Romney move to the middle.
7. It didn’t isolate Romney from the wildly unpopular House Republicans.
And let’s look at what picking Ryan did do:
1. It forced Romney to try and fail to distance himself from Paul Ryan’s budget plan. Romney now says he would have signed Ryan’s budget, and he therefore owns a budget plan so unpopular that people don’t even believe it was actually proposed.
2. It locked Romney in to a plan that raises taxes on lower middle class folks while effectively zeroing out his own taxes.
3. It locked Romney into a program that voucherizes Medicare, and twins him with a candidate who wants to privatize Social Security.
4. It, therefore, weakened Romney substantially with white working class voters and with seniors, who both hate the Ryan Budget with a white hot passion once they learn the details of it.
5. It saved the Obama administration the cost and difficulty of tying Paul Ryan and the House Republicans to Mitt Romney.
6. It created the best conceivable opening for Democrats running in difficult heavily-white states and districts.
7. It turned a battle of personalities, which polls showed Romney was losing narrowly, into a battle of ideologies, which polls show Romney will lose decisively.

Ryan’s ambitious budget blueprint, as passed twice by House Republicans over the past two years, crystallizes the GOP’s highest policy priority: shrinking the size of the federal government, largely by dramatically restructuring entitlement programs led by Medicare and Medicaid. But the GOP today is increasingly dependent on the votes of older and blue-collar whites who — while eager to scale back government programs that transfer income to the poor — are much more resistant to retrenching entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security that largely benefit the middle-class.

Long before their notable public sparring during the “Massacre in Baltimore” when Pres. Obama laid to waste the entire House Republican caucus at their Jan 29, 2010 retreat until now, Paul Ryan fancied himself the conservative star who will “take down” President Obama. He was one of those present at the infamous meeting that took place the night of President Obama’s Inauguration where they decided to totally obstruct the incoming president. Ryan’s entire conduct since then, evidenced in his voting “NO” on every single bill regardless of content, underscores his scorched earth ideological agenda.
Freudian slip or not, when Romney introduced Ryan yesterday as “the next President of the United States”, it symbolized for all intents and purposes a palace coup, the completion of the hostile takeover of the Republican Party. The hard right thinks the stars are NOW aligned perfectly in their favor to spring the ultimate coup d’etat on our democracy using the perversion of the democratic process itself to dismantle our commonweal as we know it. As the Kochs’ golden young gun groomed to deliver the extremely cruel Bircher ideological agenda with slick gelled hair, Ryan’s paymasters think he’s ideally suited for a Cheneyesque catbird’s seat keeping tabs on a nervous GOP congress while also muzzling ceremonial head-of-state Romney.
At this point, Paul Ryan’s inflated sense of self comes from how he thinks he can leverage the status elevation that earlier newsmaking public exchanges with President Obama granted him. So even though he is NOT Pres. Obama’s direct counterpart in the race, like the GOP did with Palin, the media narrative will be forced to pitch the Prez in split screen with Ryan. The GOP is counting on those optics to bamboozle the electorate with all manner of subliminal messages. That’s the plan…

President Obama’s campaign and the entire Democratic Party have been chomping at the bit not only to put the Ryan budget under blinding public Klieg lights for all to see the cruel document that it is, but judge the ENTIRE Republican party too. Ryan re-made himself into a fantasy figure from the elevation he got from the President, even when in FACT he had no record to support the perception that he was a fiscal “wonk,” into messianic delusions.
As Chris L. Hayes showed clearly on his program on Aug 11, 2012, the very premise of Ryan’s claim to be a “fiscal hawk” is a blatant LIE. Ryan’s actual congressional voting record reveals him to be nothing more than run of the mill pork-barrel-gorging, debt bloating reckless, Republican. He voted for GW Bush’s 2 unpaid for taxcuts, Iraq war, Medicare Part D, TARP and every Fed $$ he could shovel into his district
Ideas? Pfftt! We all remember the stunt he & Cantor led Republicans to pull in 2009 when they produced a budget that had zero info/pages in it just to upstage the President’s budget release. Even as he lacked clout being in the House minority, he was invited to join those televised economic summits that President Obama held in his first year.

The next public Presidential takedown of Ryan happened in in his face on April 13, 2011 at George Washington university, just before Ryan’s cruel budget was passed by the incoming GOP House majority. Ryan could be a drag on Romney in Florida
Paul Ryan’s plans to retool Medicare pose challenges in Florida, as does his one-time opposition to the Cuban embargo, a stance anathema to many Cuban Americans.

Republicans are rejoicing at Mitt Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential running mate.
But so are Democrats.
Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman, is the architect of the Ryan budget plan that makes big changes to Medicare and Medicaid and could allow for some privatization of Social Security. And that’s widely seen as a politically risky stance in Florida, a must-win state for Republicans.
Ryan might have another Florida problem: He once opposed the U.S. embargo on Cuba, a now-reversed stance that concerns some in Miami-Dade’s exile community, which is overwhelmingly Republican and had hoped that one of its own, Sen. Marco Rubio, would have been picked as Romney’s running mate. The county’s elderly Cuban population also relies heavily on government assistance, particularly Medicare.
Polls indicate that voters over 50 years old — who make up more than half the Florida electorate — are wary of changes to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, which together pump about $96 billion yearly into the hands of the elderly, the infirm and the hospitals, doctors and other providers who give them care.

Paul Ryan is the reverse of Sarah Palin. She was all right-wing flash without much substance. He’s all right-wing substance without much flash.
Ryan is not a firebrand. He’s not smarmy. He doesn’t ooze contempt for opponents or ridicule those who disagree with him. In style and tone, he doesn’t even sound like an ideologue – until you listen to what he has to say.
It’s here — in Ryan’s views and policy judgments — we find the true ideologue. More than any other politician today, Paul Ryan exemplifies the social Darwinism at the core of today’s Republican Party: Reward the rich, penalize the poor, let everyone else fend for themselves. Dog eat dog.
Ryan’s views are crystallized in the budget he produced for House Republicans last March as chairman of the House Budget committee. That budget would cut $3.3 trillion from low-income programs over the next decade. The biggest cuts would be in Medicaid, which provides healthcare for the nation’s poor – forcing states to drop coverage for an estimated 14 million to 28 million low-income people, according to the non-partisan Center for Budget and Policy Priorities.
Ryan’s budget would also reduce food stamps for poor families by 17 percent ($135 billion) over the decade, leading to a significant increase in hunger – particularly among children. It would also reduce housing assistance, job training, and Pell grants for college tuition.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—The news that Mitt Romney picked Rep. Paul Ryan, who has suggested changing Medicare, as his running mate sparked worries over the weekend among some residents at the Stella Maris retirement community in Miami Beach—concerns that could reverberate among seniors nationwide.
Mr. Ryan has proposed overhauling Medicare and Social Security—including introducing private accounts for Social Security and giving future retirees the option to choose a privately run health insurance plan.
At Stella Maris, Nancy Scarchilli, a 92-year-old registered Democrat who is undecided this year, said Medicare “just paid a beautiful penny for my hospitalization” for heart failure, adding …
