    I Like This Timing

Obama is giving his big speech tonight, so what better time for the European Central Bank to announce a bond-buying program and send global markets soaring? Didn’t Mitt Romney spend half his convention insulting Europe? Didn’t he recently travel to Europe and insult basically everyone he met? It must be a giant payback! Wouldn’t Rush Limbaugh agree?

The U.S. Dow Jones industrial average was up 217.11 points, or 1.66 percent, at 13,264.59 late afternoon in New York. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index was up 26.43 points, or 1.88 percent, at 1,429.87, its highest level in four years.
The rise in U.S. stocks was helped by reports showing American companies added staff in August at the fastest clip in five months and an improvement in service sector employment. A third report showed new claims for jobless benefits fell last week to the lowest level in a month.

U.S. private employers added a stronger-than-expected 201,000 jobs in August, according to payrolls processor ADP, while the government said new claims for jobless benefits fell last week to the lowest level in a month.

The data was the latest to hint U.S. economic growth may be recovering, and it raised chances the government’s more comprehensive monthly jobs report on Friday could be stronger than economists expect.

“Today’s U.S. reports all beat expectations to put a positive spin on the risks as we approach Friday’s U.S. jobs data,” said Michael Englund, chief economist at Action Economics in Boulder, Colorado.

People are getting jobs. People are making money on their savings and investments. President Clinton promised that this would happen last night, and it’s coming true already!!

Sometimes it sucks to be Mitt Romney.

    Convention Thread

    by BooMan
Thu Sep 6th, 2012 at 08:35:50 PM EST

Here’s a thread for convention-watchers who want to make observations. I’m a little sad tonight because this really is going to be the last speech Obama has to give where his political career is riding on the outcome. We’ll probably see State of the Union addresses, and we’ll probably see him speak to the nation after some tragedy or another, but he’ll never again have to perform on this level with this amount of pressure. And it has always been a joy to watch Barack Obama perform as a politician. It’s the same kind of joy you get from watching a Gold Medal performance in the Olympics, or a successful Mars landing, or a really great rendition of a Beethoven symphony, or any other area where humans step up to the spotlights under pressure and just nail it. He’s been the Mohammed Ali of politics for five years. He’s had his bad fights; he’s underestimated an opponent or two. But he’s been magnificent.

Yes, we still have the debates. But Obama has never been better than adequate at debating. Tonight is his last real chance to show us what he can do.

VA Chief: Obama Best President For Vets Since FDR

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki said at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday that President Barack Obama has done more for veterans than any president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

“We could not ask for a stronger advocate. We’ve made tremendous progress under this president’s leadership. But there is much more to be done for the men and women who guarantee our way of life. They have served selflessly—with unmatched valor, sacrifice, and distinction. And President Obama is determined that we will repay the debt we owe them,” Shinseki said.

ADP Jobs Report DESTROYS Expectations, 201K New Jobs Surpasses All Estimates

Sometimes called the preview for the official employment numbers, the ADP National Jobs Report was released today, and it shows the addition of 201,000 private-sector jobs in the month of August. It also revises the number of jobs added in July, to 173,000 from 163,000. August’s report far outpaces previous estimates; a Bloomberg survey of 41 economists, forecast an increase of 140,000 jobs.

Those who express concern over the Obama administration’s supposed antipathy towards small businesses will find themselves pleased to discover that the majority of jobs added came from by small and medium-sized companies:[….]

Jill Biden To Democratic Women: ‘We Can’t Go Back’

Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, spoke to a crowd of women at the Democratic Women’s Caucus meeting here Thursday. In brief remarks, Biden echoed Obama campaign messaging that the 2012 election is a battle to protect the gains in rights and equal pay for women over the past several decades.

“We can’t go back and fight the same battles we’ve fought,” Biden said. She said some of the fights over women’s rights today remind her of battles from the 1960s. Biden’s husband will address the Democratic National Convention tonight in primetime ahead of the president.

Remember back in June when some “journalist” declared it to be Obama’s awful June. I don’t remember the exact headline but I do remember it was written in the first few days of the month. I thought we’re barely a week into June and this fool thinks he knows what’s coming before it even happens. His foolish prediction was based on the jobs numbers and the likelihood the SC would declare the ACA unconstitutional. Well, June turned out to be a great, and I believe, decisive month for PBO. The jobs numbers were not good by beltway standards but I happen to believe as long as we are gaining and not losing jobs then it’s a good report to me and I’m sure to the people who got hired that month. But right after that report came out PBO and his team turned on a dime and began to fillet Williard relentlessly over his refusal to release his taxes and record of cruelty and greed at Bain. They brutalized him all month long and just when Williard expected a reprieve the SC upheld the ACA culminating in an excellent June for the prez.

The beating continued for Williard in July as we received better job numbers and the Bain ads were having the desired effect so poor “wittle Williard” thought he could escape this thrashing by taking a foreign trip to show American voters how presidential he could be on the world stage, NOT!!! So he returns home as an international pariah, having nearly averted WWIII, with his tail tucked between his legs to be greeted by another “journalist” suggesting August would be a great month for Williard because of the likely positive buzz around his VP pick, convention and the expected bump afterwards. This was written, of course, either at the end of July or the beginning of August. Well, Williard picks Lyin Ryan who is finally outed as the lying, phony, sociopath he is. Senate candidate Todd Akin decides to enlighten the world to the phrase “legitimate rape” and the GOP clown show stumbles into their convention under threat of hurricane. The hatefest is just that. Williard is treated like an afterthought at his own convention, Clint Eastwood talking to a chair is the only thing anyone remembers and there’s no bump. I don’t think Williard can take too many more “great” months like that. And with what has so far been an excellent Democratic convention coupled with the possibility of a good jobs report, September ain’t looking too good for Williard either.

Note to journalists: try waiting until a story unfolds before writing said story. Just a thought. You’re journalists not psychics.
