Despite federal probe, mental illness, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. expected to be re-elected

He’s being treated for bipolar disorder — a mental illness that can bring depression, mania, risky behavior and delusions.
He’s had a highly publicized relationship with a “social acquaintance” that rocked his marriage.
His name is repeatedly linked to disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Now he’s the target of a federal investigation into “suspicious activity” into his congressional finances.
What does all this mean for Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s political future when the Nov. 6 election is a little more than three weeks away?
“He’s going to be re-elected,” political consultant Thom Serafin said. “In this particular part of the world, being a ‘D’ is so important.”
Serafin knows theterritory. He worked for Dan Rostenkowski during some of the late Northwest Side congressman’s most challenging years.
“It’s difficult and stressful on the candidate,” Serafin said.
Like Jackson, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Rostenkowski was a Democrat.

All Sept. Black Job Gains Made by Women

The economy added 114,000 jobs last month, on top of an upward revision of 86,000 jobs to July and August. The private sector has added jobs for 31 consecutive months, and after coming into office in the depths of the Great Recession, President Barack Obama has created more than a million jobs over his first term. For the first time since he took office, the unemployment rate is below 8 percent, hitting 7.8 percent in September.
Meanwhile, the share of African Americans with a job edged up from 52.7 percent to 53.0 percent and the unemployment rate fell to 13.4 percent, after hovering just above 14 percent for the past three months. Among adults ages 20 and over, all of the gains for African Americans were among women. Although the share of black adult women overall employed rose from 55.1 percent to 55.3 percent, the share of black adult men employed fell from 57.7 percent to 57.5 percent. Both adult men and women, however, have seen their employment rate rise over the past year 0.5 percentage points.
It is clear that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, support for the auto industry and other policies implemented by the 111th Congress in 2009 and 2010 were the right path forward. Moving to supply-side economic policies, as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney advocates, will not only stymie job creation but also risk pulling the economy backward, since these were the very same policies that got us into the current mess in the first place.

Why I Reject the ‘Good Black Man’ Label

At the Huffington Post, Javon Johnson writes that he doesn’t like the implications for the black community of the title that comes with his conventional success.
While I both worked hard for and enjoy my success, I, for so many reasons, must denounce the title of “good Black man.”
When comedian Chris Rock quipped in his 1996 hit HBO special Bring the Pain, “I love Black people, but I hate niggas,” he effectively fanned the flames of the “civil war” he claimed was “going on with Black people.” Mostly concerned with whether Rock was right or wrong, much has been written about this controversial piece in his otherwise brilliant stand-up routine. Certainly Rock is able to exercise his First Amendment rights, but given that the single most defining characteristic of his “niggas” are those criminals and criminally minded dark bodied human beings in this country, and that Black men are both unhealthily and unfairly caught up in what activist-academic Angeles Davis calls the “prison industrial complex,” Rock essentially “niggafied” most Black men in the U.S. and declared war on those “niggas” on behalf of all of us “good” Black people.
Rock went well beyond what Evelyn Higginbotham calls “the politics of respectability,” or the demand “that every individual in the black community assume responsibility for behavioral, self-regulation and self-improvement along moral, educational, and economic lines.” Rock’s decontextualized joke misses the deep and complex histories of the ways in which Black men in the U.S. have been and still are criminalized, or simply labeled “bad,” as exhibited in Douglas A. Blackmon’s Slavery by Another Name and Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Even worse, Rock testifies for the “need” of the state sanctioned violence enacted on Black men, good or bad, on every day basis. And, he is not alone on this position.

*Now ain’t this somethin’. Here you are running your errands. Just going through another day; and all of a sudden that all too familiar beep or buzz alerts you. You’ve got a text.
Now you might be in the middle of something real important, and this sound has actually shown itself to be more of a disturbance than anything else. You’re wondering if its your cousin Bobby, asking to borrow a few bucks (he can wait!). Maybe Prudence is finally getting back to you (you already got the answer you needed from her two hours ago!). Finally, tired of wondering who it might be, you stop what you’re doing and check the phone.
Uh uh. No way. OPRAH?
Yep.
That scenario, as crazy as it sounds, may not be too far off from what filmmaker Ava DuVernay felt when Oprah, the Queen of all media, tweeted to congratulate her on her new movie, “Middle of Nowhere” on Monday. The message read:
“@Oprah: . @AVAETC saw your movie @MIddleNowhere. Excellent job especially with no money. Bravo to you my sistah.”
As it turns out, Lady O had just seen the movie and was so proud of Ms. DuVernay, who is the first black woman to win Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival.
But wait, there’s more: Oprah, who was so beside herself that this talented and resourceful filmmaker had actually made this film with hardly no budget (a mere $200K) tweeted AGAIN later that evening. This time, to her 14 million followers.
Can you say, ‘Sistah, you are IN?” If ever there was an invitation screaming to “@AVA from @Oprah saying, ‘call me if you need ANYthing’” this is it! Woo Hoo! Congratulations to Ava DuVernay. Now let’s go out and support the film, “Middle of Nowhere.” Thanks for the tip, Oprah.

“Which one would you trust at 3 a.m.?”
I recall an undergrad professor of mine who once joked that CBS’ long-esteemed commentator, Eric Sevareid, fundamentally appreciated the wisdom of Rooseveltian liberalism, however just when his understanding was coming into its greatest focus and clarity, Sevareid would make another of his customary pilgrimages to England, where his old Tory friends would re-rattle his nerves and convince him that Yankee Bolsheviks were swarming over Jefferson’s innocent and yeoman-like landscape. Sevareid would then come home, frantic as an A. Mitchell Palmer Red-baiter, and the whole, agonizing process of an intellectual rebirth would begin anew.
David Ignatius has often struck me (and this may be grossly unfair) much the same; he seems to roll along quite reasonably and rationally for a while, but–I guess?–he then schmoozes over heavy drink or light wine with neurotic, hyperaggressive spooks at our intelligence agencies and he goes all Dick Cheney on us. Then comes the sobering process, and calm and reason return–until the next bout of warrior-induced frenzy.
Again, perhaps I’m being unfair. If so, my apologies (not that David Ignatius would know me from a Bradley Personnel Carrier). Nonetheless I maintain that Ignatius emerges entirely from his rational side when he poses–with a dripping implication of his own preference–this question, resurrected from 2008: “Which one [Obama or Romney] would you trust at 3 a.m.?”
The foreign-policy angles of this election are acute–and acutely worrisome. Assuming the worst, Senate Democrats would always be around to frustrate and obstruct the GOP’s domestic atrocities. But in the arena of foreign policy, U.S. presidents now virtually rule as absolute monarchs. And even the thought of the pathologically frivolous Mitt Romney being in sovereign charge of the globe’s most powerful military is an utterly terrifying one.

Some 2016 whimsy: ‘The Biden ticket’
When I saw Jules Witcover’s “Biden 2016? It could happen” in this morning’s Washington Post my brain somehow assumed the absent How it could happen–that Witcover had divined the secret strategy by which this most human of all vice presidents could reignite a kind of Obama Redux against the Clinton Wrecking Machine and secure the next Democratic presidential nomination.
That Biden wants it, there’s no doubt. That Biden will seek it–through at least behind-the-scenes maneuvering, if not a primary brawl–is almost as certain. That Biden could win it?–that he could overshadow “the looming specter of Hillary Clinton,” as Witcover puts it, “Or Mark Warner. Or Martin O’Malley. Or Andrew Cuomo”? Those final three Biden could dispatch with some ease, I think, especially Warner and O’Malley. Cuomo is problematic but beatable. But lightning won’t strike Clinton down twice.
Her advantages are as self-evident as they are widely rehashed, and they would have serviced her triumph in 2008 had it not been for that most egregious, preexisting mistake of her political career, her Iraq war vote. That issue, to most folks, though, is now deader than Marley, plus Clinton will possess four redemptive years of universal acclaim as Obama’s secretary of state.
Next time, Hillary Clinton will be unstoppable. And assuming she preemptively secures the Democratic money network, she’ll be unopposable.
My grudge toward the pols who supported that vastly ill-advised, hideously idiotic Iraq war–a grudge not toward those simply too stupid to know better, but too demagogically clever, or so they thought, to oppose it–has mitigated but little. Biden, with his eyes on the White House, joined the jingoists, but at least Biden later apologized. That humble act, Clinton has always refused. And I can’t quite get over it.
Still, there’s something else that restrains my Clinton enthusiasm–that being this dynastic grinder in which we as a political nation seem to be caught. In 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000 and 2004 there was a Bush on every presidential ticket; we had a Clinton either on one or running strong in 1992, 1996, 2008, and will again, it seems, in 2016–a year that will just as inevitably see yet another Bush on the ticket. Egads, I just realized that Chelsea will be 40 in 2020–five years delinquent in her constitutional availability. If her mother’s elected in 2016 and then reelected, Chelsea will just have to wait her turn–against, no doubt, another Bush–in 2024.
If only Jules Witcover had revealed “How it could happen”–how Joe Biden, our most human of all vice presidents, could have a realistic shot at the 2016 nomination.

U.S. budget deficit shrinks by over $200 billion, reaches 4-year low

As the job market improves and unemployment falls, one of the central attacks from Romney/Ryan against President Obama has to do with the deficit. The attack overlooks Paul Ryan’s role in creating the massive deficit, the inconvenient fact that Romney hasn’t presented a deficit-reduction plan, and the problem that the Romney/Ryan agenda would appear to make the deficit significantly worse, but that’s their story and they’re sticking to it.
It’s worth noting, then, that as of today, the U.S. federal budget deficit has shrunk — a lot.
I put together this new chart reflecting the deficit over the course of the last four years. It starts with the figures released in 2009, when the deficit reached a record high of $1.4 trillion. Why is the column in red? Because, thanks to fiscal years, Obama inherited a deficit of nearly $1.3 trillion from Bush/Cheney the moment he took the oath of office.
This year, however, according to the official data published by the Treasury Department, the deficit was $1.089 trillion.

I was struck by one key contrast on display between the candidates last night. First, Paul Ryan tried to play defense on Medicare and Social Security by invoking Barack Obama:
“Barack Obama, four years ago, running for president, said if you don’t have any fresh ideas, use stale tactics to scare voters. If you don’t have a good record to run on, paint your opponent as someone people should run from. Make a big election about small ideas.”
And then, Joe Biden:
“And with regard to Social Security, we will not — we will not privatize it. If we had listened to Romney, to Governor Romney and the congressman during the Bush years, imagine where all those seniors would be now if their money had been in the market. Their ideas are old, and their ideas are bad, and they eliminate the guarantee of Medicare.”
Two things about this. First, the Ryan quote might be used effectively against Bain attacks, but it is no defense at all against the policy-based attacks that Biden was using all night. In particular, the Democratic claim about the Romney/Ryan Medicare plan, the Romney/Ryan Medicaid plan, and the Social Security plan that Ryan is still defending is that those plans would mean painful cuts that would affect the lives of real people. It’s no defense at all to say “stop scaring people.” Either Ryan should be defending those cuts, or denying that they are real, which he simply cannot do if he wants to stick to the truth about the plans they are proposing.
The second thing is Biden’s comment: “Their ideas are old, and their ideas are bad.” It will be interesting to see whether the campaign runs with this one over the last few weeks. During the vice-presidential debate, it allowed Biden to put his age to work, in the sense that he remembers thirty plus years of Republicans promoting basically the same ideas in good times and bad.

The Dividends of Romney’s Debate Victory

More Republicans than Democrats are registering and voting early in several battleground states.
The Romney campaign saw a $12 million surge in online contributions following the debate, and major GOP fundraisers are again opening their checkbooks. True enough, Hollywood stars and rich San Francisco liberals wrote big checks during Mr. Obama’s two-day California swing this week. But it isn’t clear what overall impact the president’s poor debate performance will have on his fundraising. The small Internet donors that produced an eye-popping $181 million fundraising total in September may be disappointed in his debate skills and waiting to see if he improves.

Andrew Brimmer, First Black Member on Fed Board, Dies at 86

Andrew F. Brimmer, a Louisiana sharecropper’s son who was the first black member of the Federal Reserve Board and who led efforts to to reverse the country’s balance-of-payments deficit, died on Sunday in Washington. He was 86.
His death, after a long illness, was confirmed by his daughter, Esther Brimmer.
Dr. Brimmer, an economist, held a number of high-ranking posts in Washington and taught at Harvard, but the economic conditions of poor, powerless, uneducated blacks was an abiding concern. He spoke about what he called the “schism” between blacks who were educated and had marketable skills and those who did not. In later years he spoke frequently about how government policies no longer supported programs to help blacks enter the economic mainstream.
Dr. Brimmer was the assistant secretary of commerce for economic affairs when President Lyndon B. Johnson named him to the Fed board in 1966.
At the time, the Federal Reserve was bitterly divided over monetary policy. The chairman, William McChesney Martin Jr., threatened to resign if Mr. Johnson appointed a liberal who would vote in favor of lower interest rates.
At Dr. Brimmer’s swearing-in ceremony, the president said he did not expect Dr. Brimmer to be “an easy money man or a tight money man.” Rather, Mr. Johnson said, “I expect him to be a right money man.”
The Wall Street Journal expressed skepticism, with a front-page article headlined “Desire to Aid Negroes Could Make New ‘Fed’ Member More Liberal.” It quoted an anonymous source saying that the appointment was yet another example of Mr. Johnson’s political foxiness. “The president has Martin in a box,” the source told The Journal. “If Martin resigned now, it would look like it was because he didn’t want a Negro on the board.”
Early in his tenure, Dr. Brimmer followed the lead of Mr. Martin and other “tight money” board members by supporting a gradual increase in interest rates to fight inflation. But when Congress raised taxes in 1968 and cut spending to cut inflation, he was one of the first Fed governors to call for lowering rates.
At the Commerce Department, Dr. Brimmer’s primary responsibility was to reverse the country’s balance-of-payments deficit. He spent a good deal of time persuading American businesses to voluntarily slow their use of dollars in foreign investments. He also encouraged foreign companies to use their own currency to make investments in the United States.

Tagg Team: The Romney Family Recipe for Crony Capitalism
Marc Leder, a wealthy investor, played host to Mitt Romney last May at a private fundraiser at his $4 million home in Boca Raton. Little did Leder know at the time, however, that someone would videotape the event and later leak it to the world, revealing the GOP standard-bearer in the act of caustically dismissing 47 percent of the country as too “dependent upon government” even to consider voting for him this year.
Leder attempted to duck the ensuing storm of media attention, telling Fortune that he had simply “hosted a fundraiser for an old friend.” But Leder’s ties to the candidate run deeper than campaign contributions or an old friendship. As an investor, he is part of a network of links to the Romney family business empire that will acquire enormous relevance if the GOP nominee manages to ascend to the White House.
In 2008, soon after Romney ended his first bid for the presidency, his eldest son Tagg and his chief fundraiser, Spencer Zwick, formed Solamere Capital, a private equity firm named after the exclusive community in Utah where Romney owned a vacation ski lodge.
What Tagg lacked in experience in the world of high finance, he made up for with a vast network of political connections forged through his father, who seeded the firm with $10 million and was the featured speaker at its first investor conference in January of 2010. Romney also reportedly gave strategic advice to the company, which secured prominent campaign donors as some of its first investors.

As Romney Repeats Trade Message, Bain Maintains China Ties

The tale of Asimco Technologies, an auto parts manufacturer whose plants dot eastern China, would seem to underscore Mitt Romney’s campaign-trail complaint that China’s manufacturing juggernaut is costing America jobs.
Nine years ago, the company bought two camshaft factories that employed about 500 people in Michigan. By 2007 both were shut down. Now Asimco manufactures the same components in China on government-donated land in a coastal region that China has designated an export base, where companies are eligible for the sort of subsidies Mr. Romney says create an unfair trade imbalance.
But there is a twist to the Asimco story that would not fit neatly into a Romney stump speech: Since 2010, it has been owned by Bain Capital, the private equity firm founded by Mr. Romney, who has as much as $2.25 million invested in three Bain funds with large stakes in Asimco and at least seven other Chinese businesses, according to his 2012 candidate financial disclosure and other documents.
That and other China-related holdings by Bain funds in which Mr. Romney has invested are a reminder of how he inhabits two worlds that at times have come into conflict during his campaign for the White House.
As a candidate, Mr. Romney uses China as a punching bag. He accuses Beijing of unfairly subsidizing Chinese exports, artificially holding down the value of its currency to keep exports cheap, stealing American technology and hacking into corporate and government computers.
“How is it China’s been so successful in taking away our jobs?” he asked recently. “Well, let me tell you how: by cheating.”
But his private equity dealings, both while he headed Bain and since, complicate that message.
Mr. Romney’s campaign insists he has no control over his investments since they are held in a blind trust. That said, a confidential prospectus for one of the Bain funds, obtained by The New York Times, promotes China as a good investment for some of the same reasons that Mr. Romney has said concern him: “Strong fundamentals” like manufacturing wages 85 percent lower than what Americans earn, vast foreign exchange reserves and the likelihood that China will surpass the United States as the world’s largest economy.

Springsteen plays for Obama campaign
:57AM EDT October 13. 2012 – Rocker Bruce Springsteen once said he wouldn’t perform during the 2012 presidential campaign.
The Boss has changed his mind.
President Obama’s campaign said today that Springsteen will appear along with ex-President Bill Clinton a pro-Obama rally Thursday in Parma, Ohio.
“Bruce Springsteen’s values echo what the President and Vice President (Biden) stand for: hard work, fairness, integrity,” said Jim Messina, Obama for America’s campaign manager. “His appearances will help with our get out the vote effort in these critical swing states and we are thrilled with his ongoing support.”

The Republican Vision for Government is Corporate Owned and Operated

Government is one of mankind’s oldest institutions that, in the modern era, affects every human activity in important ways. America’s government is the means by which state policy is enforced according to laws voted on by the populace within the confines of the U.S. Constitution, and one of its primary functions is protecting the people. During the early 1980′s, Republicans made a conscious decision to oppose the current form of government in their drive to transform America’s constitutional republic into a plutocracy, and they have worked diligently to deliver control of the country’s policies to corporations and financial institutions.
A means of giving corporations and financial institutions power to govern is ceding control of the nation’s resources, and eliminating regulatory agencies tasked with enforcing policies that protect the people and guarantee the nation survives according to the Constitution. After thirty years, Republicans are blatantly campaigning for voters’ permission to give the wealth of the nation directly to the rich, and allow banks and corporations to dictate policies advanced by groups such as the Koch brothers, Heritage Foundation, and Willard Romney.
Romney travels the country promising that if he is elected president, he will give job creators more tax dollars and “get government out of the way” to allow corporations and financial institutions the freedom to conduct business without regulation or oversight. It is a libertarian dream and, coupled with his party’s aspiration to charge for the privilege of living in this country, effectively changes America into a nation of peasants subsisting to enrich wealthy industrialists and bankers. The past few years provided a glimpse of the America Romney yearns for that means more wealth for the rich, and more bodies from the lack of regulations.

Romney’s Company Forces U.S. Flag to Be Lowered in Illinois

(WASHINGTON DC) – If Mitt Romney is elected president, the American flag itself may actually be restricted from flying in the United States. That word comes from employees losing their jobs in Freeport, Illinois.
The Presidential Candidate holds major stock in a company called Sensata. The company recently made factory officials take down the American flag when they were forced to train their Chinese replacement workers, according to Tom Gaulrapp, with the United Steelworkers Union.
Right now in Freeport, Illinois, some 170 workers at an auto sensor plant are sleeping in tents to protest Bain-owned Sensata Technology’s decision to ship their jobs to China.
Romney claims he knows nothing about this.
But the New York Times explains: “[Mitt Romney] owns about $8 million worth of Bain funds that hold 51 percent of Sensata’s shares. If Sensata saves money by closing the Freeport plant, that could add money to Mr. Romney’s trust accounts, now or after the election.”
This is taking place as Mitt Romney tries to convince people to believe that he doesn’t know about Bain’s shipping American jobs overseas.

Voter Registration Rolls in 2 States Are Called Vulnerable to Hackers

Computer security experts have identified vulnerabilities in the voter registration databases in two states, raising concerns about the ability of hackers and others to disenfranchise voters.
In the last five years, Maryland and Washington State have set up voter registration systems that make it easy for people to register to vote and update their address information online. The problem is that in both states, all the information required from voters to log in to the system is publicly available.
It took The New York Times less than three minutes to track down the information online needed to update the registrations of several prominent executives in Washington State. Complete voter lists, which include a name, birth date, addresses and party affiliation, can be easily bought — and are, right now, in the hands of thousands of campaign volunteers.
Computer security experts and voting rights activists argue that a hacker could use that information to, say, change a person’s address online to ensure that the voter never receives a ballot in Washington, where voting is now done entirely by mail. In Maryland, hackers could ensure that a voter is not listed on the precinct register at a designated polling station. In that case, the voter would be redirected to another precinct, or asked to fill out a provisional ballot. In both cases, the person would not be able to vote in local, or possibly, Congressional races.

The Polling Industrial Complex and The Media “Horse-race” Narrative

I am writing this in the immediate aftermath of the Joe Biden Beat-down of Lyin Paul Ryan, aka the VP Debates.
The Sunshine Patriots and Fair Weather White Guys got what they claimed they wanted all right — the Democratic Party’s #1 Enforcer had high-sticked, body checked, fact-checked and dropped the gloves, all with in the span of 5 minutes.
And for 90 minutes, He. Never. Let. Up.
Ryan was left with nothing but smirks, endless water sipping and spin, including talking himself into sending more troops into Afghanistan, scaring seniors with Social Security privatization and Medicare vouchers, and denying the right to choose with a new twist – now Position #671 on Abortion from the Romney/Ryan campaign.
A clear win — the contrast was stark and Ryan was clearly out of his league. On all counts.
So were the Hacks happy now?
Well sort of. But tonight — unlike last Wednesday’s melt-down – they decided to be “professional”. Their right leaning counter-parts who declared the bullying Romney a clear victor on “style” were now reduced to complaining that Biden was too assertive. And last week scowling bad, but now smiling is out.
And the insta-polls? A CBS snap poll of undecided voters (no demographic detail provided) had 50% declare Biden the winner. And CNN, whose sample of old white men from the South last week declared Romney the overwhelming winner, now reports that a sample with fairly even Republican Democrat and Indie splits ( no demographic at all) declares Ryan the Winner 48% – 44%.
And if the waters were not muddied enough, Nate Silver decides –within an hour, before the dust is even settled – to report these two “polls” as “evidence” of a Biden “hold”. No clear winner – no probable poll impact.
As Joe Biden would say, “Malarkey!!”
But but but the Page Clicks and the Horse Race must go on.
