“This fall, I am supporting Richard Mourdock for Senate…With so much at stake, I’ll hope you’ll join me in supporting Richard Mourdock for U.S. Senate.”
– Mitt Romney, October 21

Romney has said he still supports Mourdock and will not pull his endorsement ad.  Romney described himself as “severely conservative” and Richard Mourdock is the only candidate in this election for whom Romney has released a TV ad. When Romney says he will radically roll back women’s access to healthcare services, women should absolutely take him at his work that he is severely conservative.

Melissa Harris-Perry of MSNBC, a victim of sexual assault, narrates an open letter to Mourdock. Astonishingly powerful. (@Jonathan Alter)

    from mediaite: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/melissa-harris-perrys-open-letter-to-richard-mourdock-rape-survivors-are-the-gift-to-ourselves/

On Saturday, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry presented an open letter to GOP senate candidate Richard Mourdock, drawing on her own experience with sexual assault. In this highly personal response to Mourdock’s statement about pregnancy resulting from rape being something that “God intended to happen,” Harris-Perry shared that she flinches sometimes at others’ touch and that some times of year can be harder because of associated memories. These, she explained, are “triggers” for her and for other survivors, and she spends her life trying to either avoid or manage these. A political race, she added, shouldn’t have to come with a trigger warning.

Survivors of sexual assault, she said, learn not to judge one another’s responses to their respective experiences. She then shared that, as a descendant of American slaves, some of her foremothers were women whose children — conceived through rape — increased the wealth of their rapists. And even these children, as complicated and painful and harrowing as their births may have been, were loved.

    She continued:
I do not doubt the compassion or judge the choice of a survivor who carries a rape pregnancy to term. But the whole point is choice, consent. You see, Mr. Mourdock, the violation of rape is more than physical. Rapists strip women of our right to choose, of our right to say no, of our right to control what is happening to our bodies. And most of our assailants tell us it’s our fault. And they tell us to be silent. And sometimes they even tell us it’s God’s will. That is the core violation of rape. it takes away choice.
Now, Richard, you believe it’s fine to ignore a woman’s right to choose because of your interpretation of divinity. Does that sound familiar? So let me explain something to you. When we survive sexual assault, we are the gift. When we survive and we go on to love and to work and to speak out and to have fun and to laugh and dance and to cry and to live, when we do that, we defeat our attackers. For a moment they strip us of our choices and we heal when we take our choices back. We are the gift to ourselves and our families and our communities and our nation when we survive. So let me say this very clearly to you, Mr. Mourdock, and to all of your shameless endorsers: We did not survive an attack on our consent just to turn around and give up our right to choose to you. Not without a fight.

Are you sure you want to have that fight?

    Sincerely, Melissa.

    PRESIDENT OBAMA ON RAPE:

“[T]his underscores, though, this is exactly why you don’t want a bunch of politicians — mostly male — making decisions about women’s health care decisions. Women are capable of making these decisions in consultation with their partners, with their doctors. And, you know, for politicians to want to intrude in this stuff, often times without any information, is a huge problem. And this is obviously a part of what’s at stake in this election. You’ve got a Supreme Court that, typically a president is going to have probably another couple of appointments during the course of his term. And, you know, Roe vs. Wade is probably hanging in the balance. You’ve got issues like Planned Parenthood where, you know, that organization provides millions of women cervical cancer screenings, mammograms, all kinds of basic healthcare.

“And so I think it’s really important for us to — to understand that women are capable of making these decisions and that these are not just women’s issues. These are family issues.”

    STATE HOUSE BUREAU

Governor Christie “completely rejects” comments on rape and abortion made by an Indiana U.S. Senate candidate supported by the popular Republican, the governor’s spokesman said today.

The statement came after Democrats said Christie should call on Republican Richard Mourdock to drop out of the race. Christie is out of state campaigning in Massachusetts and New Hampshire today, but his spokesman, Michael Drewniak, said the governor disagrees with Mourdock’s view that abortion is wrong even in cases of rape.

“Governor Christie has always been clear about his position, and that includes exceptions in cases of rape, incest and life of a mother,” Drewniak said. “He completely rejects Richard Mourdock’s beliefs and views on this issue as expressed in last night’s debate.”

During a televised debate Tuesday night Mourdock said he’s against abortion in all cases.

    Richard Mourdock is Romney Unmasked
Statement of NOW President Terry O’Neill

    October 24, 2011

Last night Republican candidate Richard Mourdock confirmed what Todd Akin brought to light earlier — that the radical fringe currently in control of the GOP holds misogynistic and deeply unpopular views about women, rape and reproductive rights. Anyone who thinks Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is a moderate who stands apart from this fringe should think again.

During a debate for Indiana’s open U.S. Senate seat, Mourdock asserted that when a woman becomes pregnant from a rape “that’s something God intended.” Romney attempted to distance himself from Mourdock’s pronouncement, but he has yet to withdraw his endorsement of the candidate or call for him to stop running a TV ad that features Romney expressing support for Mourdock.

Voters should understand that Mourdock and Romney are soul-mates who think they know what’s best for women. They seek to re-victimize rape survivors, control women’s reproductive lives by criminalizing abortion and blocking their access to contraception, and deny women autonomy over their bodies and lives. Mourdock is simply Romney unmasked, and their brand of governing is a threat to women in Indiana and throughout the United States.

GOP-GOT NOWHERE TO RUN; NOWHERE TO HIDE

    AP / October 24, 2012

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte has cancelled her plan to campaign with Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, who said that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape, ‘‘that’s something God intended.’’

Mourdock said on Wednesday said he abhors rape and meant only that God creates life.

But Ayotte’s spokesman, Jeff Grappone, said that the senator disagrees with Mourdock’s comments, which do not represent her views. Ayotte was scheduled to campaign with Mourdock on Wednesday, but canceled her trip and is in New Hampshire instead.

Mourdock’s comment, made at a debate Tuesday night, has pushed the issues of rape and abortion to the forefront. The campaign of Republican Mitt Romney, who appears in a television ad for Mourdock, said the presidential nominee disagrees with Mourdock.

Rape-publicans it’s always on their Mind
Rape is always on the minds of Republicans. From when they first wake up in the morning to their eyes close at night, Republicans are thinking about Rape.

    Rape. Rape. Rape.

    Republicans love Rape.

    Indiana Republican Senate Candidate Richard “Howling Mad” Mourdock decided to instruct Women that being Raped is God’s Will;
“I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”
Lay back and enjoy it, honey. Rape is all part of God’s Plan. Deus Vult!

Legitimate Rape. Forcible Rape. Real Rape. Honest Rape. Transvaginal Ultrasounds. Hold the aspirin between your knees.

During a debate appearance last night, Tea Party Senate Candidate Richard Mourdock (R-IN) said that pregnancy that resulted from rape was something that “God intended.”

(Reuters) – Richard Mourdock, the Republican candidate for the Senate in Indiana, said on Wednesday he stood by controversial comments he made during a debate in which he said that pregnancy resulting from rape can be “something that God intended to happen.”

Mourdock said he “spoke from the heart” during the debate and that his comments had been “twisted” by people. He apologized, however, for any misinterpretation of his statement.

Mourdock is sorry you chose to be offended.
