“Oh Happy Day” is a 1967 gospel music arrangement of an 18th century hymn. Recorded by the Edwin Hawkins Singers, it became an international hit in 1969, reaching US #4 and UK #2 on the pop charts. It has since become a gospel music standard.
Edwin Hawkins’ funk style arrangement of the hymn “Oh Happy Day” has a long pedigree: It began as a hymn written in the mid-18th century (“Oh happy day that fixed my choice”) by English clergyman Phillip Doddridge (based on Acts 8:35) set to an earlier melody (1704) by J. A. Freylinghausen. By the mid-19th century it had been given a new melody by Edward F. Rimbault and was commonly used for baptismal or confirmation ceremonies in the UK and USA. The 20th century saw its adaptation from 3/4 to 4/4 time and this new arrangement by Hawkins, which contains the repeated refrain only (all of the original verses being omitted).

Good riddance to Mitt Romney

On Tuesday night, as I watched the election returns roll in, there were moments of great joy – but one of the happiest moment came after the losing candidate delivered his concession speech and disappeared through the backstage curtains at the Boston Convention Center. I realized at that moment that I would likely never again have to write or even, for that matter, think about Mitt Romney.
Now, I understand that, as a general rule, you don’t hit a guy when he’s down. Romney suffered a crushing defeat, one that according to aides he was completely unprepared for.
But at the end of the day, Romney’s campaign should be assessed in the most accurate possible manner. Its failings should not be sugarcoated or glossed over. Instead, it should be described precisely as it was: One of the most cynical, dishonest and disreputable presidential campaigns in modern American history.
From the Republican primaries to practically the final days of his failed presidential campaign, Romney was either blatantly lying about his opponent’s record, adopting policy positions of convenience that ran counter to his past positions, regularly misleading Americans about his own plans or stirring racial acrimony. I don’t feel sorry that Romney lost on Tuesday night; I feel sorry that a great nation had to be subjected to his presidential campaign.

Jon Husted Hatches a Plan to Make Sure Democrats Never Win Ohio Again

Now that Barack Obama is the official and non-recountable winner in Scott-land, let’s fast-forward to the next bundle of mischief the Republicans are going to unleash on citizen innocents from here to the mid-terms. Like a jumping bean on Meth, far-right dirty tricksters are incapable of taking a break from their treachery of cutting Democrats off at the knees.
The red states are going to be the busiest of little bees (jumping beans?) in the continued creation of their latest political depravity. Here’s one tactic that is a favorite of Ohio’s radical right Secretary of State, Jon Husted, arguably the most partisan state politician in the nation.
This is Jon’s proposal as forwarded to me by an Ohio Professor-Emeritus friend of mine. A little background (spoiler alert: this could be a tad boring). Redistricting takes place every 10 years, right after the Census. The object is to make the population of each district roughly the same, but it’s really little more than establishing political advantage for the party in power. Most legislatures are the majordomos in the process, though they pretend to listen to input from others. The aforementioned Professor and I were both on an Ohio state commission (called a Politician Commission) for 2000 census redistricting. He had a brilliant and extremely fair apportionment idea that I, alone, supported.
As I’ve already explained, the party in power draws up the districts through states and/or commissions to favor their continued power to the greatest extent possible. Back to Husted. Here’s what Jon wants to do as tracked by the Daily Kos Meteor Blades from its origins at Plunderbund, a blog self-described as focusing on Ohio and national politics.
According to the above sources, and I’m quoting here, “The winner of each congressional district is awarded the districts electoral vote.” End quote.
So, what’s the big deal? Well, 48 of our states follow the winner-take-all model. In other words, if you win the state’s popular vote, you win the state’s electoral votes. You’ll recall from an earlier submission, electoral votes are 2 automatic votes representing the number of Senators in Congress from the state (the same for each state) added to the number of House Congressional Representatives. Slicing up Florida’s Electoral votes for instance; 27 House members + 2 Senators = 29 Electoral votes.

Bill Kristol isn’t just any regular old Fox News talking head. He is a double Rupert Murdoch employee. He is both one of the founders and editors of The Weekly Standard, and a Fox News contributor. Kristol’s remarks today signal a potential shift in the winds over at Fox News.
Kristol’s comments today were an omen that Republicans know that Obama is going to get his way on raising taxes on the wealthy. They’ll still be bluster and noise out of people like Sean Hannity about how the economy will be ruined if we raise taxes on the rich, but Kristol’s remarks can be viewed as Rupert and Roger preparing their audience for something that they know is going to happen.
Of course knowing it is going to happen, and having a few conservatives on to voice support for the idea, won’t stop Fox News from endlessly bashing Obama after taxes are raised on the wealthy.
Post-Obama reelection, it’s a new political landscape out there. The Republican Party’s main propaganda outlet doesn’t like getting their butts handed to them in elections, so you can expect more of these kinds of whispers to keep coming Fox News contributors in the future.
First, Hannity announces that he supports an immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship. Now, Fox is mumbling about supporting more taxes for the rich.
Obama’s reelection has truly and completely turned Fox News world upside down.

We passed and ratified a universal health-care system. We saw the first female Speaker of the House, the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice, and the first openly gay member of the Senate. We stopped a Great Depression, rewrote the nation’s financial regulations, and nearly defaulted on our debt for the first time in our history. Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Maine, Maryland, Washington and the District of Columbia legalized gay marriage, and the president and the vice president both proclaimed their support. Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana. We killed the most dangerous terrorist in the world and managed two wars. We’ve seen inequality and debt skyrocket to some of the highest levels in American history. We passed a stimulus and
investment bill that will transform everything from medical records to education and began a drone campaign that will likely be seen as an epochal shift in the way the United States conducts war.
Americans of good faith disagree over the worth of these initiatives and the nature of these milestones. None of us know the verdict that history will render. But we can say with certainty that the pace of change has been breathlessly fast.

Women’s Votes Decisive in 2012 Presidential Race
New Brunswick, NJ—Women’s votes were decisive in Barack Obama’s victory, according to an analysis of exit poll data by the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers. The State University of New Jersey. A majority of women (55%) cast their ballots for President Barack Obama, while a majority of men (52%) voted for Governor Mitt Romney, according to Edison Research.
Defined as the difference in the proportions of women and men voting for the winning candidate, a sizable
gender gap was evident in the election results. The gender gap was 10 percentage points in 2012, with 55
percent of women, but only 45 percent of men, voting for Obama. The gender gap in this year’s
presidential race is larger than in any year except 1996, when it was 11 percentage points. There was a 7-
point gender gap in the final vote in both 2004 and 2008.
Obama won about the same proportion of women voters in 2012 (55 percent) as he won 2008 (54 percent).
Romney’s support among women voters in 2012 (44 percent) was about the same as women’s support for Senator John McCain in 2008 (43 percent). What was different this year was that Romney fared much better among men (52 percent) than McCain did in 2008 (48 percent).
Even though Romney won a majority of white women’s votes (56 percent), a gender gap was clearly
apparent among white voters. Forty-two percent of white women, compared with 35 percent of white men, voted for Obama. Unlike white women, majorities of both black women and Latinas voted for Obama.
However, as with the vote among whites, a gender gap was apparent for both blacks (96 percent of women versus 87 percent of men voted for Obama) and Latinos (76 percent of women versus 65 percent of men voted for Obama).
In addition to the gender gap in the national vote, a gender gap was apparent in 8 of the 9 battleground states. In each of these 8 states, a majority of women voted for Obama (see table below).

Jonathan Weisman and Jennifer Steinhauer at the NYT report that Boehner told his caucus to get in line, and acknowledge the reality that the GOP got whooped in the election, and is weakened:
Their party lost, badly, Mr. Boehner said, and while Republicans would still control the House and would continue to staunchly oppose tax rate increases as Congress grapples with the impending fiscal battle, they had to avoid the nasty showdowns that marked so much of the last two years.

I think if the republicans hold to this position, it may cost them more seats in the midterm elections in 2014. As of Saturday November 10, 2012, 15 States have petitioned the Obama Administration for withdrawal from the United States of America in order to create its own government.
States following this action include: Louisiana, Texas, Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Colorado, Oregon and New York. These States have requested that the Obama Administration grant a peaceful withdrawal from the United States.
These petitions were filed just days after the 2012 Presidential election.
Louisiana was the first State to file a petition a day after the election by a Michael E. from Slidell, Louisiana. Texas was the next State to follow by a Micah H. from Arlington, Texas.
The government allows one month from the day the petition is submitted to obtain 25,000 signatures in order for the Obama administration to consider the request.
As of 12:46 am, Sunday, signatures obtained by Louisiana, 7,358; Texas, 3,771; Florida, 636; Georgia, 475; Alabama, 834; North Carolina, 792; Kentucky, 467; Mississippi, 475; Indiana, 449; North Dakota, 162; Montana, 440; Colorado, 324; Oregon, 328; New Jersey, 301 and New York, 169. Another strange thing is these tools petitioning the Obama Administration. The Constitution gives Congress the power to grant statehood, so why are these dummies petitioning PBO to whom the Constitution grants NO power to create new states? I’ve sometimes said in jest that ignorance should be classified as a mental illness, but in the instance of these tools filing petitions to the executive branch requesting permission to secede from the Union, I’m certain that many of them ARE mentally ill.

The millionaires and billionaires who gave nearly $500 million to independent groups in the race to elect Mitt Romney and other Republicans not only bet on the wrong party, they bet on the wrong tactic. They believed that an endless drumbeat of television advertisements would be enough to drive voters away from President Obama and Democratic policies.
It did not work. Democrats not only won the White House, they increased their majority in the Senate and added to their numbers in the House. Although Democratic outside groups spent more than $200 million on ads, the tactic that proved most effective — particularly as practiced by the Obama campaign and the party — was identifying voters in key states and getting them to the polls.

On Thursday, November 8, two days after the election, CBS News reported that Mitt Romney went into Election Night expecting a victory and was “shellshocked” when he finally realized he had lost.
After it had been called that President Obama was re-elected, it was hard for Romney to process and accept the news.
“We went into the evening confident we had a good path to victory. I don’t think there was one person who saw this coming.”
CBS said Paul Ryan, who was slated to be the next vice-president also seemed shocked by the loss, adding that Ann Romney cried, as did Paul Ryan’s wife Janna.
Another Romney adviser said:
“There’s nothing worse than when you think you’re going to win, and you don’t. It was like a sucker punch.”

Mitt Romney says he is a numbers guy, but in the end he got the numbers wrong. His campaign was adamant that public polls in the swing states were mistaken. They claimed the pollsters were over-estimating the number of Democrats who would turn out on Election Day. Romney’s campaign was certain that minorities would not show up for Obama in 2012 the way they did in 2008. “It just defied logic,” said a top aide of the idea that Obama could match, let alone exceed, his performance with minorities from the last election. When anyone raised the idea that public polls were showing a close race, the campaign’s pollster said the poll modeling was flawed and everyone moved on. Internally, the campaign’s own polling—tweaked to represent their view of the electorate, with fewer Democrats—showed a steady uptick for Romney since the first debate. Even on the morning of the election, Romney’s senior advisers weren’t close to hedging. They said he was going to win “decisively.” It seemed like spin, but the Boston Globe reports that a fireworks display was already ordered for the victory. Romney and Ryan thought they were going to win, say aides. “We were optimistic. More than just cautiously optimistic,” says one campaign staffer. When Romney lost, “it was like a death in the family.”
How did the Romney team get it so wrong? According to those involved, it was a mix of believing anecdotes about party enthusiasm and an underestimation of their opponents’ talents. The Romney campaign thought Obama’s base had lost its affection for its candidate. They believed Obama would win only if he won over independent voters. So Romney focused on independents and the economy, which was their key issue. The Republican ground game was focused on winning those voters. “We thought the only way to win was doing well with independents and we were kicking ass with independents,” says a top aide. One senior adviser bet me that if Obama won Ohio, he would donate $1,000 for every point that Romney won independents to my favorite charity. (That would be a $10,000 hit since Romney lost Ohio but won independents by 10 points). In the end, Romney won independents nationally by five points—and it didn’t matter one bit.
The Romney campaign thought Obama’s base had lost its affection for its candidate.

We may not have been making a big fuss about how angry we were because of the way the republicans and the MSM have disrespected PBO, but that didn’t mean we weren’t angry about it. We know how easy the republicans and MSM are to dismiss our concerns, so we had planned to do what PBO had in mind: use our votes to exact revenge. Republicans and the MSM have been so used to abusing blacks, LGBTQ persons, Latinos, American Muslims, other minority groups, and women in general that it’s no wonder Romney didn’t see the train with all of us riding on it that was headed straight towards him. He, the other republicans, and the MSM were viewing the election from a white perspective, but it was our perspective of the country that mattered the most on Tuesday.
Report: FBI whistle-blower contacted Eric Cantor on David Petraeus affair

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor spoke to an FBI whistle-blower two weeks ago who accused then-CIA Director David Petraeus of having an extramarital affair and potentially jeopardizing the security of classified information, according to a news report.
Cantor’s chief of staff, Steve Stombres, later spoke with FBI officials to pass on the accusations from the whistle-blower, the New York Times reported on Saturday night.
Cantor’s involvement in the Petraeus scandal is the first indication that anyone outside of the FBI knew Petraeus was under scrutiny for an extramarital relationship or potentially leaking classified information.
The FBI had been investigating Petraeus for several months after his alleged mistress, author Paula Broadwell, was suspected of sending “harassing” e-mails to another woman close to Petraeus.
