Wiki: Mohammed Kasim Reed, known as Kasim Reed (born June 10, 1969) is the 59th Mayor of Atlanta, taking office on January 4, 2010. He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1998 to 2002 and represented the 35th District of the Georgia State Senate from 2003 to 2009. After serving as campaign manager for Shirley Franklin’s successful 2001 Atlanta Mayoral campaign, he ran for the position in 2009 since Franklin was term limited. He was one of two candidates to advance from the November 3 general election to a December 1, 2009 runoff election, which he won and was officially inaugurated as Mayor of Atlanta on January 4, 2010. In college, he instituted a student fee that has added millions of dollars to the Howard University endowment since its inception in 1991. Mayor Reed’s civic leadership and service have been nationally recognized in publications such as The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Ebony and Black Enterprise. “prominent members of conservative, Washington-based defense think tanks were given permanent office space at Petraeus’s headquarters and access to military aircraft to tour the battlefield. They provided advice to field commanders that sometimes conflicted with orders the commanders were getting from their immediate bosses.”
And here I thought civilians in Washington were supposed to “listen to the generals.” Turns out, it sometimes worked the other way around. Tax dollars, I assume, were used to provide that office space and access to military aircraft to the same people who so brilliantly helped enmire us in two wars after 9/11; what could go wrong?

Upset over the result of last week’s presidential election, an Arizona woman ran over her husband with her car, believing him to be directly responsible for Obama’s reelection because he didn’t vote.
According to police in Gilbert, 28-year-old Holly Solomon of Mesa and her husband Daniel argued loudly in a local parking lot before Holly got in her Jeep SUV and began chasing Daniel around. She eventually managed to pin him underneath the vehicle as he was trying to run away.
Daniel sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.
“According to Daniel, Holly believed her family was going to face hardship as a result of President Obama’s re-election,” Gilbert police Sergeant Jesse Sanger said in a statement.
Daniel’s presidential preference likely wouldn’t have mattered much to Romney: He won Arizona by a margin of some 200,000 votes.
Holly was booked on charges of domestic violence charges of aggravated assault. Shockingly, neither alcohol nor drugs were listed as contributing factors.

Now that that they’ve won another four years at the White House, a U.K. tabloid newspaper claims President Obama and the first lady have their sights set on a new goal: trying to bring a group of tween sensations to Washington.

The funniest thing about Mark Thiessen’s piece is that he is mystified that a “community organizer” could out-organize a Bain Capital outsourcer. But what could be more predictable?
How on earth did Barack Obama, the community organizer, harness the power of data in the 2012 election like a Bain Capital numbers-cruncher, while Mitt Romney’s data-mining effort crashed and burned like, well, Solyndra?
Mitt Romney was not the cool candidate. He ran on competence. But having the data system your campaign is relying on to turn out the vote crash on Election Day is incompetent. Not testing that system before Election Day is inexcusable. And letting a community organizer run a more precise, data-driven, metrics-based campaign than a Bain Capital executive is incomprehensible.
There is nothing incomprehensible about it. President Obama hired people who believe in science. President Obama’s team used trial and error to hone the best possible practices. President Obama is a trained organizer which means he is very good at organizing people.
Mitt Romney is an expert at hiring people to cut corners and find loopholes in the law and hide large amounts of money and to loot pension funds. He is trained to deceive and defraud people, and to cheat and steal. He designs and exploits systems that are rigged so that he cannot lose. He doesn’t organize people. He fleeces them. He’s a con man. Just ask his billionaire supporters.

Thiessen needs to recognize that it is community organizers who know how to communicate well with people from all walks of life. The republicans have spent so much time ridiculing PBO for being a community organizer that they missed how important it is to be able to get along with people who are different from yourself. Romney has no people skills beyond those he uses when he’s schmoozing with his rich friends. That’s why poll after poll showed that most Americans believe that PBO is more like them and understands their issues/problems. Sitting up in that Ivory Tower didn’t do Romney a bit of good last Tuesday.

David Gergen — a friend of Gen. David Petraeus as well as the woman he reportedly had an extra-marital affair with — said on “Face The Nation” this morning that great men have affairs — and that those relationships can be very important to them in difficult times.
“I would hope people would remember that there have been other great leaders in this country … Remember President Eisenhower, when he was General Eisenhower, Kay Summersby, how important that relationship was to him,” Gergen said.
“Remember Franklin Roosevelt and Lucy Mercer, how important that relationship was to him during the second World War.
“I think we have to be understanding that, as the saying goes,” Gergen stammered, “the best of men are still men, men at their best.”

The clearest take, perhaps, came from NPR’s Cokie Roberts, who explained on Morning Edition (11/8/12) that the election showed that the country is divided. (This is, in a sense, what elections are supposed to do.) She explained the task for Obama:

It is a divide where he’s lost whites, he’s lost Southerners, he’s lost people of a certain income and age, and he’s really got to do something fast to deal with that.
This is a curious notion of how politics work. After winning an election, the victor should immediately…do what his or her opponents want to do. It’s something the press has done before–especially when Democrats win.

When a misguided debate meets a wrongheaded metaphor

Also, to echo a point Suzy Khimm raised on Friday, another part of the problem with the metaphor is that much of the political debate is predicated on the notion that the “fiscal cliff” necessarily refers to a fiscal problem. That’s actually backwards — if the automatic spending cuts and automatic tax increases kick in, the nation’s budget deficit would shrink a lot and in a hurry.
This is important because it should, in theory, help shape the debate. I’ve heard pundits arguing lately, “We need a deficit-reduction plan to avoid the fiscal cliff,” but that doesn’t really make sense. Going over the so-called “cliff” would mean automatic deficit reduction. The point of the bipartisan talks, then, is to find an alternative solution to the same challenge. Policymakers are effectively looking to replace an unpopular austerity plan with a more palatable one.
Ezra’s looking to replace the “cliff” metaphor with something more sensible. Here’s hoping something better comes along soon.

I need to get something off my chest!
I hate to make this about race but it is a reality.
Since election night, I have read article after article talking about the need for the Republican Party to learn to adjust their tone and do a better job of outreach with respect to Latinos. I love my Latino brothers and sisters. I fought hard in this election for them as well as all other folks who want to be a part of our great society but can we African Americans get a little acknowledgement from all these pundits, writers and the Republican Party as a whole who sat by and watched us being demonized and discounted throughout this entire election. Yep I’m talking to you Chuck Todd with your AA’s are not going to be enthusiastic about the 2012 election et al… What makes them think that the Republican Party doesn’t need to adjust their tone and outreach in regards to people who look like me!
Donald Trump being paraded around from station to station questioning everything he can think up about this President when no President prior to PBO was ever treated with such disrespect and it was all sanctioned by the media. Can you imagine if PBO had Rev. Wright as a spokesperson for his campaign what the fallout would have been. Two sets of rules and we all know why!
Romney running those out right lying Welfare ads even when the fact checkers said they were false because he knew it played on the false notion that AA’s are lazy good for nothing “takers” who just want free stuff!

Then you have the long list of outrageous, egregious remarks over the last four years about our President not being American enough from the likes of Allen West, Michele Bachman, Joe Walsh and we will never forget the “You Lie” man, Joe Wilson.
They act as if I am invisible. Yes, it would take a helluva lot of effort to win over AA’s to the Republican Party but less they forget that GWB got 12% of the AA vote in 2004. They better realize that ALL minorities are a voting force that they need to reconcile with or next time that zero vote we’re seeing precincts report that Romney got will spread like wildfire in future elections.

The Queen of Versailles’: the best film on the Great Recession

“The Queen of Versailles” began as a documentary about a time-share billionaire, his ditzy wife, and their grotesque quest to build the largest house in the United States of America. It ended as perhaps the single best film on the Great Recession.
The movie was supposed to be about conspicuous consumption. David and Jackie Siegel were building a 90,000 square foot palace nicknamed “Versailles.” The documentarians wanted to see what kind of people would do that. So they embedded with the Siegel family.
But then the financial crisis hits. Credit dries up. Siegel’s business, which relies on cheap credit, begins to flounder. Versailles falls into disrepair. The family begins to crack. “This is almost like a riches-to-rages story,” Siegel tells the camera.
Midway through the movie, there’s a scene that might stand as the single most complete vignette on the mechanics of the financial crisis and the subsequent slow recovery.
It’s almost Christmas and David Siegel, CEO of Westgate Resorts, the largest time-share company in the world, is hosting a party. The party is in his huge mansion. But it’s not in his hugest mansion — the 90,000 square foot, still under-construction “Versailles” — which is, at that moment, falling into foreclosure because Siegel can’t keep up on the payments.
Siegel, slumped in a ratty armchair, is regaling some friends with a tale that is, simultaneously, a sob-story about the desperate state of his finances and an extended boast about his skill at financial engineering. As Siegel tells it, he owes the bank $18.5 million, and he can’t pay. But the bank won’t write down the loan. So Siegel tapped a third-party to approach the bank about buying the loan, which they were able to do, for a mere $3.5 million. And then Siegel bought his $18.5 million loan back from the third-party at barely more than a sixth of its original value. This, he says, is why the financial system — and the economy — are in the toilet.
It’s all there: The conspicuous consumption, the mania for ever-more real estate fueled by every-cheaper loans, the complicated financial engineering that made so many rich and then made their companies so poor, Wall Street’s destructive unwillingness to write down the principal on loans, and the way that, even during the depths of the recession, the rich were able to play by different rules — rules that helped them emerge from the downturn with more money than ever.
Another scene in the film drives home the point. Jackie Siegel a beauty queen from a small town in New York, has reconnected with a high school friend. The friend didn’t move to the big city and marry a billionaire whose business relied on cheap money. But she got hit by the financial crisis nevertheless: her house is now in foreclosure. And it’s her real house, the one she actually lives in.
The bank says she needs $1,800, and Jackie sends her $5,000. But in a late-night call some time later, she confesses that she lost the house anyway. The bank, she says, wasn’t willing to reverse the foreclosure process even though she’d been able to come up with the money. There’ll be no buying her loan back at a cut-rate price.
There’s no good news in the documentary. It ends before the recession does. But there’s good news beyond the documentary.
Siegel is, these days, best known as the vainglorious plutocrat who sent his employees an e-mail explaining they’d likely be fired if President Obama won the election and they should, you know, keep that in mind when they go to vote.

The Republican agenda laid bare
For most of my lifetime, the basic Republican message has been about 3 issues:
Reduce taxes
More military spending
Privatize everything – especially entitlements
In the past they’ve been able to sell a lot of the 99% on these things through fear – especially when it comes to their culture war. That’s one of the reasons this election was such a big deal. The country is changing and those cultural issues don’t work anymore. All of those things – including the Southern Strategy, marriage equality, women’s reproductive rights, demonization of immigrants, Islamophobia – were taken off the table.
So now they’re left with having to openly defend those 3 basic goals the cultural issues were meant to obfuscate.
The last fear tactic left standing is their attempt to claim that they care about the federal deficit. Even with data like this, too many people still buy that lie.
All of that…every single one of those issues…is going to be on the table as Democrats and Republicans work out a deal on what has been described as the “fiscal cliff.” The first thing for Americans to recognize is that it has been the balanced approach of Democrats that has been proven effective in reducing our debt.
Beyond that, the way the Democrats have set up the negotiations means that those three primary issues up top are going to be in competition with one another. The Republicans can go for broke on all of them – and lose everything. Or they can compromise on all of them. Or they can pick one and fight for it at the expense of the other two.
I’d suggest that privatizing the entitlements is off the table at this point. So that leaves the other two – taxes and military spending – to fight it out.
It’s crunch time for Republicans. Their agenda is being laid bare and is on the blocks. Grab the popcorn and watch the show brought to you by the superior negotiating of the Democrats.

I suspect this was a failed attempt to undermine the President in an election year.

In debt talks, failure is an option

President Obama and congressional leaders have about seven weeks until the end of the calendar year, at which point automatic spending cuts, which both parties oppose, will kick in, and all Bush-era tax cuts will expire. Policymakers seem to believe a debt-reduction agreement is still possible to avoid these measures, but it’s an uphill climb.
The dirty little secret, though, is plenty of Democrats seem to realize that a deal isn’t entirely necessary.
Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) on Sunday said Democrats were prepared to allow the expiration of all George W. Bush-era tax rates if Republican lawmakers objected to raising taxes on the wealthiest.
“We can’t accept an unfair deal that piles on the middle class and tell them they have to support it. We have to make sure that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share,” said Murray on ABC”s “This Week.”
Murray said one option would be to let the lower rates expire across-the-board and then return to the table next year with new talks on a tax-cut package.

In the aftermath of Barack Obama’s victory over Mitt Romney in the presidential election, Newt Gingrich said it’s time for the Republican party “to stop, take a deep breath and learn.”
Gingrich reflected on the outcome of the contest during an appearance on NBC’s “Today” on Monday.
The former House Speaker, who made a failed bid for the GOP presidential nomination earlier this year, said, “The president won an extraordinary victory. And the fact is we owe him the respect of trying to understand what they did and how they did it.” He added, “But if you had said to me three weeks ago, Mitt Romney would get fewer votes than John McCain and it looks like he’ll be 2 million fewer, I would have been dumbfounded.”

The prevailing explanation for Barack Obama’s reelection amid a difficult economy is that — unlike in 2008 — it was more perspiration than inspiration. It was ground out on the margins. It was rooted in demographic bean-counting and a campaign to tear down Mitt Romney that was all prose and no poetry — a ruthless, systematic, data-driven dismantling of his character and qualifications on every level.
All of that is true. But it misses a major part of the story — that the Obama team also consciously built his reelection on a narrative designed to be as inspiring as the one that lifted him to victory in 2008, albeit in a different way. This year’s narrative turned on the sheer range and scale of obstacles Obama faced — the story of a leader who perseveres relentlessly in the face of extraordinary conditions to improve the future of the middle class.
This storyline is key to Obama’s ability to defy the odds and survive, something that continues to flummox his opponents, just as Bill Clinton’s survival skills mystified his. And in the ultimate twist, Republicans themselves helped Obama build this narrative. Nope — Obama didn’t build that. Not alone, anyway.
Obama’s original victory was improbable enough. But consider the extraordinary hurdles he overcame to win reelection. He won despite:
1) Inheriting an economy in free fall and a crisis that is proving deeper and more intractable than anything since the Great Depression.
2) Facing an extraordinarily determined opposition that sought to deliberately deny Obama any cooperation of any kind, on the gamble that the sitting president would bear the blame for failing to unite the country, for government dysfuntion in the face of crisis, and for the failure of the economy to heal.
3) Being the target of an unprecedented barrage of hundreds and hundreds of millions in outside ad spending, one that painted a dire picture of the Obama economy and widespread economic suffering in hard-hit battleground states for months.
Obama guru David Axelrod is a believer in the centrality of storytelling to politics — he has been described as “the keeper of Obama’s narrative.” Faced with terrible economic conditions and an implacable opposition, Obama’s brain trust knew Obama would only survive if he ran a scorched earth campaign designed to tear apart his opponent. But the Obama team also married this to an uplifting narrative about Obama that appropriated the very economic and political obstacles he faced.

David Petraeus’ resignation from the CIA because of a self-confessed extramarital affair seems oddly puritanical, or just odd.
Nearly 70 years ago our Supreme Allied Commander, Dwight D. Eisenhower, managed to conquer both Nazi Germany and Kay Summersby and then proceeded to ask–in writing–the profoundly priggish U.S. Army chief of staff, George C. Marshall, what he thought about Ike, maybe, dumping Mamie and idyllically settling down with said Ms. Summersby. To which George responded–and I’m only roughly paraphrasing here–Ike, are you fucking nuts?
Anyway, Ike’s temporary schoolboyishness (which wasn’t much of a secret) hardly prevented the general from going on to even greater heights. For the next seven years the thought of President Truman being in possession of Ike’s letter in Pentagon files worried the bejesus out of the latter, but Harry was an understanding sport, and never used it politically. These things happen, you know, boys will be boys, that sort of thing.
But it doesn’t apply to David Petraeus, I guess?

So, I’m watching Morning Joke and he is pissed off! I know why, because of the Republican house leadership involvement they can’t get at POTUS over this Petraeus mess.
This New Yorker summary by Jane Mayer gets to the heart of the matter: who the hell drop kicked Petraeus out? Because, this was a political hit job.
This is my theory.
This all started in the summer with an investigation by the FBI, Jill Kelly apparently had a friend in the Tampa office and was freaked out by some emails she was getting. Apparently, she had no idea who they were from but were threatening. Andrea Mitchell alluded to the fact she’s seen them; and an investigation was begun that led to the affair being uncovered. No one did anything wrong; so that was the end of the matter until a rouge FBI agent went to House Republican leadership who turned to the FBI Director. [ETA: I don’t believe this, an investigation this long something went down that no one wants to talk about IMO which is why a “whistleblower: went to Cantor who couldn’t use the information IMO.]
Now, apparently Cantor said he just informed the FBI Director of the facts but as Mayer points out in her summary the man knew. You don’t go after the director of the CIA and the director of the FBI not know! I suspect, Cantor wanted to blow this shit up in the press and was told he’d be attacked and given the national security interests he’d likely be breaking laws which is why we heard NOTHING but the facts were floating out there.
So, Morning Joke was trying to say obviously the White House HAD to have known. But that is undercut by the fact Republican leadership knew. I suspect, Cantor and the Republican leadership were drawn into this story by the FBI to create an untenable political situation to get rid of Petraeus. And I suspect Eric Holder and the WH took the opportunity to clean house; because getting rid of Petraeus completely means getting rid of the neocons and in such a way that it’s going to be hard for him to make trouble for the WH in the next four years.
I’m telling you, the way Petraeus (who ran roughshod over the Bush White House and controlled the village to the point were people were about to crown him the ’12 Republican nominee) has been marginalized is amazing. And it all started with his transfer to the CIA and now he’s been removed from there. And I don’t believe it was all coincidence.

This is going to be gone by the end of the week and by next week, the Benghazi story will be played out. And Republicans are gnashing their teeth that they have nothing to impeach POTUS over, lol.
I can not wait for the HBO miniseries of this administration. The movie is going to be something!
What none of these folks understand is that God is watching over PBO. Everything they’ve done in an attempt to make him look bad or to his demise has FAILED. They’re miserable because there has/have been no major scandal(s.) Although the republicans are always talking about what they believe to be God’s will, it doesn’t appear that God agrees with them.

I’ve argued often that the food system functions like an economic sieve, draining away wealth. Imagine, say, a suburb served by a handful of fast-food chains plus a supermarket or Walmart or two. Profits from residents’ food dollars go to distant shareholders; what’s left behind are essentially low-skill, low-wage clerical jobs and mountains of generally low-quality, health-ruining food.
But the food system’s secret scandal is that it’s economically extractive in farming communities areas, too—and especially in the places where industrial agriculture is most established and intensive. I first learned about this surprising fact from the Minnesota-based community-economics expert Ken Meter, specifially this 2001 study on a farm-heavy region of Minnesota. And now Food and Water Watch, working with the University of Tennessee’s Agricultural Policy Analysis Center, has come out with an excellent new report documenting the food industry’s effect on several ag-intense regions, with the main spotlight on the hog-centric counties of Iowa, the nation’s leading hog-producing state.
