  1. LISTEN: Newtown Gunman Reportedly Called Radio Show About Mass Shootings

    http://www.mediaite.com/online/listen-newtown-shooter-reportedly-called-radio-show-about-mass-shootings/

The New York Daily News has acquired a tape of a call-in to an Oregon radio show that they believe is a recording of Adam Lanza, the Newtown shooter, discussing mass shootings.

The call was to the show “Anarchy Radio,” hosted John Zerzan in Eugene, in December of 2011, one year before Lanza opened fire in a Sandy Hook elementary school. During the call Lanza described “Travis,” a domesticated chimp who attacked a woman in Connecticut in 2009, nearly killing her. Lanza said that the act of civilizing Travis had made him “sick,” and that his unexpected assault was comparable to human outbursts, like mall shootings.

“His attack can be seen entirely parallel to the attacks and random acts of violence that you bring up on your show every week, committed by humans, which the mainstream also has no explanation for,” Landa said. “I just don’t think it would be such a stretch to say that he very well could have been a teenage mall shooter or something like that.”

Lanza took pains to distort his voice, speaking robotically at times, but the Daily News said it received confirmation from Lanza’s classmates that the disguised voice is his. Authorities involved with the investigation into the Newtown shootings confirmed that Lanza had called a radio show, but did not confirm whether it is Landa’s voice on the recording.

  2. Adam Lanza’s Father Willing to Release Medical Records To Sandy Hook Commission

    http://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-sandy-hook-commission-0110-20140110,0,1836021.story

HARTFORD — Adam’s Lanza’s father, Peter Lanza, is willing to release any medical records he can about his son and to meet privately with the chairman of the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, according to a statement released late Friday afternoon.

A month ago, members of the commission said that it was vital to have access to more information about Adam Lanza’s mental health history, but it has been unclear until now whether his family would release any available records to the commission.

A statement released by Lanza’s spokesman, Errol Cockfield, said, “As Mr. Lanza has informed law enforcement officials throughout this process, he is willing to approve the release of any medical records that he has the authority to release.’

The statement said that Lanza has also let commission chairman Scott Jackson know that he is willing to meet with him privately “towards reaching that goal.”

In addition, Lanza is encouraging Jackson “to invite any health care or service providers that worked with Adam to assist with the commission’s effort to find answers.”

The commission was created by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy after Lanza, 20, killed 20 first-graders and six educators at Newtown’s Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012. Lanza, who also killed his mother at their home, fatally shot himself within minutes of police arriving on the scene.

The advisory group was charged with coming up with recommendations to improve school security, mental health services and gun violence prevention.

Jackson, who led a meeting of the commission Friday morning, was informed later in the day that Peter Lanza would contact him early next week to discuss the records.

Thousands of pages from the Sandy Hook school massacre were released today, revealing further details of gunman Adam Lanza’s childhood.

Among the police photographs were images of used paper targets from shooting ranges, which the 20-year-old was said to have visited with his mother, as well as a birthday card from his dad offering to take him shooting.

In the brightly-colored birthday card from Lanza’s father, Peter, a message read: ‘Adam, Happy Birthday – Send me an email when you want to go hiking or shooting. Love, Dad.’

It also revealed the extent of Lanza’s mental illness with several witnesses speaking of an early fascination with destruction and violence.

One teacher says his work was too violent to be shown to the rest of the class.

Other photos and files showed that police found a stock of knives at the home and instruction manuals for the guns.

In one chilling image, a wooden bed frame sits without the mattress above a row of women’s shoes.

It is known that Lanza shot dead his mother Nancy Lanza while she lay in bed before taking off on his rampage at the school.

The day before the shooting she had stayed two days at a New Hampshire hotel as part of an experiment in letting her son stay home alone and be independent.

She was shot four times in the head by her son the morning after she returned. The rifle used to kill her was found by police next to her bed.

The sound of gunfire was reported between 8am and 9am that Friday, but it was believed to have been from hunters.

Investigators reported that the windows of his second-floor room had been taped over with black trash bags.

  8. President Obama To Hold Moment Of Silence For Sandy Hook Victims

    http://flip.it/L3P4U

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama plans to observe a moment of silence at the White House on Friday morning in honor of the victims of the Connecticut elementary school massacre.

The White House says the president will observe the moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. EST, about one week after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 children and six adults were killed at the school.

Obama has asked Vice President Joe Biden to produce recommendations on new gun laws by next month and pledged to push new legislation without delay.

The White House said the president’s observance of the shootings would take place in private without press coverage.

  9. Eric Holder: Gun Violence May Be Addressed Through Executive Actions

    http://huff.to/UbjqiN

WASHINGTON, Dec 19 (Reuters) – The Obama administration will consider executive actions and specific proposals for legislation as part of its gun policy response to the school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said on Wednesday.

Holder, who has been a vocal proponent of a new ban on certain semiautomatic rifles, told reporters that a range of options need to be considered in the coming weeks.

Those options will have to include a “strong and robust” Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the chronically under-funded agency that enforces federal gun laws, he said.

“It’s clear that we need to do more,” Holder said. He did not specifically call on Wednesday for a return of the assault weapon ban.

  10. Sandy Hook must be a tipping point for change

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/19/opinion/morgan-gun-debate/index.html

(CNN) — On Wednesday night, I hosted a town hall-style debate on guns in America, talking to lawmakers, mass shooting survivors, lawyers, gun lobbyists — anyone, basically, who has a strong opinion about what I consider to be the single biggest issue facing America today.

Since I joined CNN two years ago, there have been a series of gun-related tragedies, including the attack on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater massacre.

Each sparked a short-term debate about guns. Yet each debate fizzled out with zero action being taken to try and curb the use of deadly weapons on the streets of America.

Now, following the grotesque slaughter of 20 innocent young children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, I sense that the mood has changed.

We have reached a crucial moment in this debate, and I intend to use my platform to continue this conversation on Wednesday night and going forward. The media have previously been quick to move on to other stories after these tragic acts of gun violence. That must change.

I’ve made my own views clear on my show — the senseless killing has to stop. High-powered assault rifles of the type used at Aurora and Newtown belong in the military and police, not in civilian hands. High-capacity magazines, too, should be banned. And background checks on anyone buying guns in America should be comprehensive and stringently enforced.

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The family of Noah Pozner was mourning the 6-year-old, killed in the Newtown school massacre, when outrage compounded their sorrow.

Someone they didn’t know was soliciting donations in Noah’s memory, claiming that they’d send any cards, packages and money collected to his parents and siblings. An official-looking website had been set up, with Noah’s name as the address, even including petitions on gun control.

Noah’s uncle, Alexis Haller, called on law enforcement authorities to seek out “these despicable people.”

“These scammers,” he said, “are stealing from the families of victims of this horrible tragedy.”

It’s a problem as familiar as it is disturbing. Tragedy strikes – be it a natural disaster, a gunman’s rampage or a terrorist attack – and scam artists move in.

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Eric Holder will travel Friday to Newtown, Conn., the site of last week’s elementary school shooting.

A Justice Department official says Holder will head to Newtown after meeting with Vice President Joe Biden, who is tasked with leading an administration-wide effort to create new proposals for reducing gun violence. In Newtown, Holder will meet with first responders and law enforcement officials.

The official requested anonymity because Holder’s visit to Newtown had not been publicly announced. He will not be participating in any public events during the visit.

  13. Adam Lanza’s hard drive may still hold clues, despite “destruction”

    http://blogs.computerworld.com/e-discovery/21528/adam-lanzas-hard-drive-may-still-hold-clues-despite-destruction-itbwcw

Adam Lanza’s hard drive may still be recoverable. Data forensically retrieved from the damaged platters may be able to shed light on the Connecticut youth’s tragic motivations. However, ill-informed speculation has implied links to Lanza’s diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome and his playing of violent video-games.

  34. Connecticut Shooter Adam Lanza: Quiet, Bright, Troubled

    http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/connecticut-shooter-adam-lanza-quiet-bright-troubled/story?id=17984172

Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old who killed 20 kids and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school Friday, was very bright, say neighbors and former classmates, but he was also socially awkward and deeply troubled.

“[Adam] was not connected with the other kids,” said family friend Barbara Frey. A relative told ABC News that Adam was “obviously not well.”

On Friday morning, Lanza shot his mother Nancy in the face at the home they shared in Newtown, and then drove her car to Sandy Hook Elementary School. Dressed in black combat gear, he broke a window at the school, which had recently had a new security system installed, and within minutes had shot and killed six adults and 20 schoolchildren between the ages of five and 10.

The shooting stopped when Lanza put a bullet in his own head. Multiple weapons were found at the scene, including two semiautomatic handguns registered to his mother. A Bushmaster rifle registered to Nancy was discovered outside in the car.

Long before Lanza’s spree, however, residents of Newtown had noticed that tall, pale boy was different, and believed he had some kind of unspecified personality disorder.

Adam Lanza has been a weird kid since we were five years old,” wrote aneighbor and former classmate Timothy Dalton on Twitter. “As horrible as this was, I can’t say I am surprised.”

In school, Lanza carried a black briefcase and spoke little. Every day, he wore a sort of uniform: khakis and a shirt buttoned up to the neck, with pens lined up in his shirt pocket.

He hated being called on by teachers, and it seemed to require a physical effort for him to respond. He avoided public attention and had few, if any, friends. He liked to sit near the door of the classroom to make a quick exit.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/12/14/newtown-connecticut-sandy-hook-school-shooting-heroism/1770555/

Students and teachers displayed courage amid the gunfire.

Stories of heroism by adults and children are emerging from Sandy Hook Elementary School. Here are a few:

School therapist Diane Day described how principal Dawn Hochsprung and a school psychologist, identified as Mary Scherlach, leaped from their seats and ran out of a meeting when they heard gunshots.

“They didn’t think twice about confronting or seeing what was going on,” she told The Wall Street Journal.

Hochsprung and Sherlach were shot dead in the hallway, according to news reports.

Sandy Hook’s lead teacher pressed her body against the meeting room’s door, which did not have a lock, Day said. The gunman shot through the door, wounding the unidentified teacher in an arm and a leg.

“She was our hero,” Day said

Parent Robert Licata told WABC-TV the gunman burst into the classroom of his 6-year-old son and shot the teacher without saying a word.

“That’s when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door,” he said. “He was very brave. He waited for his friends.”

First-grade teacher Kaitlin Riog said she was in a morning meeting when she heard what sounded like automatic gunfire. She then locked her classroom door and herded her students into the bathroom, where she locked them in and blocked the door with a tall storage unit.

“I felt that, in the time, I tried to be very strong for my children,” she told WABC. “I said anyone who believed in the power in the prayer, we need to pray. And those who don’t believe in prayer, think happy thoughts… I told the kids I love them and I was so happy they were my students… I didn’t think we were going to live.”

When police knocked later, she said, she told officers to slide their badges under the door, then told them to get a key to prove they were police. Officers then unlocked the door and took the children to a nearby fire department.

“‘I just want Christmas,'” she says her students told her. “‘I don’t want to die, I just want to have Christmas.’ I said, you’re going to have Christmas and Hanukkah. I tried to be positive.”

  38. Dozens Killed in Conn. School Shooting

SANDY HOOK, Conn.—A man armed with two semiautomatic pistols killed 20 children at an elementary school Friday in a rampage that left 27 people dead and one injured in this suburban town before he took his own life, authorities said.

Police said the suspect, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and began firing shortly after 9:30 a.m., concentrating on two classrooms. It was the second-worst campus shooting in U.S. history.

No motive was cited by authorities. State police said they found the body of someone who lived with the suspect at a house nearby. Mr. Lanza’s mother was among the victims.

Diane Day, a therapist at the school, was sitting with the principal, a parent and other staff members for a meeting when she heard gunshots.

“At first we heard a bunch of kids scream, and then it was just quiet and all you could hear was the shooting,” Ms. Day said.

Principal Dawn Hochsprung and the school psychologist leapt from their seats and ran out to help, Ms. Day said. “They didn’t think twice about confronting or seeing what was going on,” she said.

Without a lock to secure the door, a teacher at the meeting pressed her body against the door to hold it shut, Ms. Day said. That teacher was shot through the door in the leg and arm. “She was our hero,” Ms. Day said.

Carrie Usher, a fourth-grade teacher, said she believed the principal turned on the campus loudspeaker system, which broadcast sounds of “screaming and crying” through the school to warn others. Ms. Hochsprung and the school psychologist, identified as Mary Sherlach, were reported to be among the victims.

Ms. Usher’s class, meanwhile, was in the library and they hid in the closet.

“The gunfire was just unbelievable. It felt like it lasted for five minutes,” the teacher said. “It wouldn’t stop.” No one in her class was hurt.

Some young survivors — ages 5 to 10 — described the terror of the shooting and a massive police response that included SWAT officers going room to room to search for victims as students huddled in classroom corners.

“That’s when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door,” he told The Associated Press. “He was very brave.”

One student told NBC Connecticut she was in the gym when she heard “seven loud booms.”

“The gym teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled,” she said. “And I kept hearing these booming noises. And we all … started crying.

“All the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us,” she added. “So then a police officer came in and told us to run outside. So we did and we came in the firehouse.”

The high death toll and the tender age of many victims sent shock waves all the way to the White House, where the flag was lowered to half-staff.
