Why would a well-off suburban single mother have an arsenal of at least six guns, three of which were used against her and dozens of schoolchildren and teachers by her mentally disturbed son?
As family and friends talk to national media, one answer to that question has emerged — Nancy Lanza was more than a “gun enthusiast,” she was “something of a survivalist” who bought guns because she “had been stockpiling” for the coming “economic collapse”:

Why did she bother with all that?

The lawmakers were accountable, you know. If you went a little too far in your state, the federal government kind of slapped you back a little bit. But now, the federal government doesn’t do that. Each state makes laws for themselves, even when President Obama came into Arizona, he got a stern talking to and he’s the chief of the country.

Sacrificing thousands of kids on the altar of racist rightwing fantasies
why do exurban and rural white men care so much about this issue? Most of them don’t actually hunt for sport, and hunting rifles aren’t on the radar for gun control, anyway. Fear that hunting will be outlawed cannot explain it. There is a lot of talk among the Tea Party crowd about the “defense of liberty” that undergirds the rationale for the Second Amendment in the first place. But while that sort of talk is satisfying and high-minded for self-styled modern patriots, the reality belies the fantasy: the vast majority of these men don’t actually see themselves gunning down police and soldiers in a hypothetical Communist state takeover, and the puny small arms in question wouldn’t begin to stand up to the might of America’s high-tech standing army. Being an insurgent in Iraq or Afghanistan is a dangerous occupation at best fueled in part by anger at outside invaders, and it’s highly unlikely that these passionate gun advocates are hedging against a future as guerrilla warriors shooting American soldiers from duck blinds.
But it doesn’t take much time reading through conservative websites to see what actually drives the desperate need to own high-priced killing machines. There is a vast, festering paranoia in conservative circles about the “looters” and “parasites” coming to take their hard-earned material possessions in the supposed coming debt-fueled collapse of society. There is continual worry about some dark-skinned assailant attempting to enter their home and potentially steal their property. Radio shock jocks react to stories about carjacking by demanding that more people carry guns in order to litter the streets with more “dead urban thugs.” There are large segments of the population that want nothing more than to eliminate subsidies to the poor and then await the desperate masses who will supposedly come to their doorstep with a lead welcome. Ron Paul and Alex Jones’ legions of followers have been told to “defend your supplies from those who refused to prepare” for the supposed riots coming when EBT cards are canceled. It’s doesn’t take much investigation of conservative media consumer attitudes to discover that these sentiments are shockingly widespread.
It sounds too awful to contemplate, but reality is a cruel mistress. It’s painfully obvious what motivates the rabidly pro-gun base: a deep-seated desire to unwind the social contract and cleanse undesirables who are allegedly stealing their tax dollars. These murderous fear-fueled fantasies have no bearing on any events that will actually take place in the real world (except possibly some decades on by climate change induced migrations), but they are strong motivators nonetheless. Unfortunately, both political parties are also motivated to hold onto the voters who carry these nightmarish visions in their heads.
What this functionally means is that we as a nation are openly allowing thousands of our children to die every year so that certain segments of the population can role-play racist murder fantasies. It’s not awful to admit that this is true. It’s awful that it’s happening, and that we as a nation must pay the price for it with the torn and mutilated bodies of our innocence and our future.

The press briefing was horrible. Tweets from the media about what the CT medical examiner said were just a nightmare. The kids who were killed were 1st graders, they all suffered between 3-11 gunshot wounds and the .223 assault rifles were used. He also said they had to take pictures of the kids and show them to the parents and that’s how the parents identified their children. When they were reading the children and faculty members names, my heart broke again for the Newtown community. This is supposed to be a period of joy, music, and sparkling lights and the horror that has been visited on this community is just wrong.
It’s insane. I can’t take it. It’s much too much.

Michigan Republicans Inoculate Themselves from Recall in Lame Duck Marathon

What do you do when you aren’t representing the people and they’re starting to get wise to you? You make it harder for them to recall you.
That’s what the Michigan Republicans did this morning.
Amid a flurry of lame duck ALEC based legislation they passed, including allowing concealed weapons in schools, churches, arenas, hospitals and more (that they passed this on the eve of the Connecticut elementary school shooting tragedy appears to have caused no shame), weakening abortion rights, restricting medical marijuana, and taking away collective bargaining from unions, Michigan Republicans also passed legislation aimed at creating a safety net for their theft of democracy.
It is now harder to recall your lawmakers, the governor and local officials, as if it isn’t hard enough already. There is both a shorter time for signature gathering and you now have to have a primary with an opponent rather than an up and down vote on a recall.
Michigan Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer (D-East Lansing) asked Republicans, “Why are you making it more difficult to recall an officeholder? We are willing to work on this with you. Yet you jam it through in dark of night on the last night of a lame-duck session… You’re trying to inoculate yourselves from a recall.”
This move echoes the propaganda Republicans sold in Wisconsin, that recalls are not the way to “express” yourself. “Recalls shouldn’t be used for disagreeing with a vote.”

Right to work’ is conservative code for screw the worker

Earlier this week the Michigan legislature passed a law making Michigan a “right to work” state. This change represents Michigan’s dramatic shift from a pro-union state to a more conservative, pro-business state. Nearly half of the states are right to work states, a trend that shows no sign of abating. Right to work is a brilliantly contradictory term composed by pro big business factions. The term is more accurately defined as “screw the worker”.
As an attorney in North Carolina, which is a right to work state, I have seen firsthand how this pro-business/anti-worker legislation hurts not only the workers but the economy in general. Right to work legislation is premised on the idea that lack of regulation is a good thing because it promotes business growth. Proponents of this legislation believe unions get in the way because they make business inefficient and stifle growth. Recently North Carolina has not fared well economically in spite of right to work legislation.
In right to work states, an employee may be fired for virtually any reason other than discrimination against a protected class. This means an employer can fire an employee because he or she does not like the employee’s clothing or thinks the employee is fat. Even if there is some form of discrimination an employer need only show some other reason for termination, and the aggrieved employee will have little if any legal recourse. The reason does not have to be a good reason.
Employment law claims are very difficult to maintain in right to work states because the law is slanted in the employer’s favor. Regardless of the merits of the case, the law makes it difficult to maintain a case.
The process usually goes like this: Employee is fired. Employee files a complaint with the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). Rarely is the case resolved at this level. The EEOC will issue a right to sue letter. Employee retains an attorney, but, even if there is discrimination, harassment or a hostile work environment, the case stands the likelihood of being dismissed if there is any legitimate reason for termination. Again, this is a very low bar for the employer.
In right to work states, unions have little if any power, and this means workers are paid less because no one forces management to pay workers more. Anti-union people argue unions stifle business growth, but there has never been any evidence to support this notion. To the contrary, the United States thrived economically in the 1950′s and 1960′s when unions had more influence.
When workers make less everyone suffers. If workers are paid lower wages, they will not have as much money to support themselves and their families. This means they will have less money to spend on goods and services. Businesses that provide these goods and services will suffer if no one can afford their goods and services.

Hard to Comprehend

This time it is different for me. I’m always furious when these horrible acts of gun violence occur, but this one is just hitting harder. These were just little kids. I keep trying to console myself that maybe some of the victims were so young they didn’t fully comprehend what was happening. It’s not much to grab on to to deal with this situation, but it is the fiction I am using to make this easier.
Christmas was a big time of the year for us- my father collects Santas, and he has usually around 5,000 of them somewhere around the house. There is the Christmas tree with so many ornaments it takes days to put them all up. Lights, ivy, etc. If you saw the pictures I posed the other day, recognize this is 1/10th of the decorations we used to put up. But back then when I was a little kid, my mother and father used to buy Christmas presents for months, wrap them, and “hide” them in their bedroom closet, in the attic, in the basement, and anywhere they could. I have the quotes of sarcasm around hide because even though I was a kid, I knew when it was approaching Christmas time. I knew where to look for the presents. Anytime they went out and left us with a babysitter during this time period, it was like an elaborate Easter Egg hunt for me and my brother and sisters. I’d drag chairs from mom’s office into the closet, pull down the “hidden” presents, and we’d all look at the tag telling us who it was for, shake it, and try to figure out what we were getting.
All I can think right now is how many moms have Christmas present hidden all over their house and were told this morning that their child is dead. How many of them will now look at a Christmas tree, knowing their child will not be there on Christmas morning to open the presents lovingly purchased and wrapped and hidden? How many of these parents struggled for years to get pregnant, and now their kid, because of some lunatic with an easily accessible gun, is dead? How many grandparents who waited for 30 years to have a grandchild, have plane tickets booked for the Holidays, and now need to change those plans and come up earlier to bury their grandchild.
I grew up in a small town where for about 25 months from 1969-1970, every month another couple had a child. These were my friends- Judd, Brad, Micah, Thad, Brian, Ryan, Kelly, Toni, Jodi, Kim, Cole, Ponch, Bert, Erik, Mark, Vicki, Stacy, Dee Dee, and so on. Sandy Hook was a small town, and an entire kindergarten class was wiped out. It would be like everyone who was born in that period in my home town never existed- killed in one horrific act of gun violence. My town would never, ever recover. Ever.
And then the residual trauma. How many of these families will survive? How many of them will be driven to divorce by the trauma. How many of the siblings will never, ever be the same? I talked to my mom on the phone, and she is just inconsolable and simply can not watch the coverage. She’s worried the parents will kill themselves.
This shooter and his easily accessed guns did not just kill 27 people. He ruined thousands of lives. And let’s not forget about the first responders. I don’t care how tough of a cop or a fireman you are, you will never be the same. We’ll have dozens of people with PTSD, leading to alcoholism and drug abuse and family problems.
It’s just so god damned awful it is hard to comprehend. Yet the same fucking assholes who enable this kind of stuff are now going to tell us all that now is not the time to talk about gun control (lest we “politicize it”) and that we need more guns to keep this from happening again.
I think I’m going to be sick.

While negotiations concerning the fiscal cliff continue, and as the Tea Party House reportedly rejects the idea of even a 10-to-1 cuts:revenue deal, the Republicans have found at least one thing they’re willing to spend more money on — defending bigotry
It has come to light that House Administration Committee Chairman Dan Lungren (R-CA) secretly approved a $500,000 increase to a contract with a private law firm to defend the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court. While the increase was approved in September, neither the public nor the Democratic House minority was informed until this week, Roll Call reports.
The contract now authorizes Bancroft PLLC and former Solicitor General Paul Clement (R) to spend up to $2 million in to defend DOMA — the second increase to what was originally a $1 million cap.
Former Solicitor General Paul Clement must have an amazing public relations team, because after failing to stop Obamacare, he’s been given a pay raise ahead of an equally unsuccessful campaign to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act. Or so we hope.
Unless you do something truly heinous, such as support President Obama for any reason, you can only fail upward in the Republican party.

States Assert Their Rights by Giving Them Up

Today was the deadline for states to submit a plan to run their own health insurance exchanges under Obamacare, and now that the deadline has passed, over half the country has chosen to assert their rights by giving up their rights
Just 18 states and the District say they plan to operate their own exchanges, which are slated to begin enrollment in October. In an additional 32 states, the exchanges will be run either entirely by the federal government or a federal-state partnership.
It’s now official: In well over half of the states, local governments will relinquish all or some control over implementation of a law that will impact untold numbers of their own constituents. In so doing, they are reducing, rather than increasing, control over what happens in their own states — all in the name of states’ rights. […]
The states that run their own exchanges, for example, will decide whether to allow all health plans that meet the law’s minimum standards to be sold on the exchange or to limit the selection to a few that regulators think offer the best value.
In the federally run exchanges, federal officials will make that call.
I have no doubt that the federal government will operate and maintain a better exchange than some of these states would have on their own, so for that we can be thankful, but the irony of asserting your state’s rights by surrendering those rights to the federal government is unmistakable.
It’s so dumbfounding I wonder if legislators in some of these states even comprehend the implications of their intransigence. State governors, for their part, are simply relinquishing their responsibility for political gain, conservative street-cred, and anti-Obama bona fides.

Earth to the Pundits: Scott Brown Lost Big and Would Lose Big Again

The chattering class is fond of far-fetched theories that lead to lots of intrigue, and one fanciful idea that has been floating around lately is that Scott Brown is ready for a comeback.
The hypothesis is that if John Kerry is nominated to President Obama’s cabinet, then Brown would be a strong contender to fill Kerry’s seat. It has even been speculated that Senate Republicans went after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice so harshly just to improve Brown’s chances at a comeback.
If you look at the facts, though, you’ll see that Brown is far from the sure bet to win another contest that Republicans hope he is. Consider the following:
Who lost by a bigger margin than almost any candidate in a competitive Senate race in the country?
Scott Brown. The 7.5-point loss he suffered at Elizabeth Warren’s hands was even worse than the 5.5-point loss for Brown’s fellow Republican Richard Mourdock in Indiana — that’s right, the guy who said pregnancy from rape is “something that God intended.” In short, as convenient as it is to refer to the Massachusetts contest between Brown and Warren as a close race, Brown took a beating.
Who was the only incumbent in the entire U.S. Senate to lose in 2012?
Scott Brown. Every one of Brown’s colleagues in the Senate who vied for reelection managed to win. That includes Bill Nelson in the swing state of Florida. That includes Democrat Jon Tester, who held onto his seat in Montana. That includes Bob Casey in the perennial battleground of Pennsylvania. It includes the other Senator Brown—Sherrod Brown of Ohio. Scott Brown proved himself uniquely inept in his failure to fend off his challenger – and to in fact lose by 7.5%. And remember, this wasn’t months or even years ago – this was last month.
Who lost to Elizabeth Warren by the same margin that William Weld lost to John Kerry?
Scott Brown. Weld and Brown both lost by approximately 7.48 points, but Weld was going up against a popular two-term incumbent, whereas Brown was the incumbent facing a first-time political candidate. For all the talk about his special campaign skills and positioning, nothing in the results was very special.
Who in the Massachusetts Senate election appeared to pick up no last-minute support or votes from undecided voters?
You guessed it: Scott Brown. Dozens of polls conducted in the seven months leading up to Election Day show that Brown hovered around the 46% mark the whole time. Of course, 46% is what Brown actually ended up with on Election Day. In other words, Brown made no progress during his campaign, despite an enormous war chest of almost $40 million to spend on it.
These facts tell only part of the story, though. What’s most damning to Brown’s future prospects isn’t the margin of his defeat. It’s the campaign he ran and the issues he stood for.

Alabama Suit Cites FBI Tapes As Proof Of Lawmaker Racism

A group of Alabama voters alleged in a federal lawsuit filed on Wednesday that a redistricting plan for the state House and Senate discriminated against minority voters and was passed with racist intentions.
Their evidence? Secret FBI recordings that captured racial comments by two state lawmakers who turned out to have been cooperating with a major investigation.
U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson wrote a scathing opinion last year concerning state Sen. Scott Beason (R) and former Rep. Benjamin Lewis (R), who were cooperating with the FBI as part of a massive corruption investigation in the state. Thompson concluded that the two Republicans were only cooperating with the FBI because of their “ulterior motives rooted in naked political ambition and pure racial bias.” He said the pair wanted to keep a pro-gambling bill off the ballot in 2010 because they believed such a proposal would increase African-American turnout and negatively impact Republicans.
One of the recordings featured Beason referring to blacks as “aborigines,” while another recording captured him agreeing with colleagues who predicted that casinos would lure blacks with free buffets and gambling credits and bus them to the polls.
Those FBI tapes play a central role in the federal lawsuit filed by the Alabama Democratic Conference and several voters who allege the redistricting plan passed by the Republican-controlled legislature and signed by Gov. Robert Bentley (R) is discriminatory.
Bentley and Secretary of State Beth Chapman (R) were both named as defendants in the suit. Their spokespeople did not return TPM’s calls for comment on Friday, nor did a spokesman for Attorney General Luther Strange (R).
Beason apologized for his comments in September 2011, a few months after they became public during the corruption trial. He told TPM on Friday that he only voted on the redistricting lines but wasn’t directly involved in drawing them. He said the plaintiffs in the suit were grasping at straws.

Rice could become National Security adviser later in Obama’s 2nd term

President Barack Obama was meeting privately Friday with Susan Rice, the embattled U.N. ambassador who abruptly withdrew from consideration to be the next secretary of state after a bitter, weeks long standoff with Republican senators who declared they would fight to defeat her nomination. And White House officials are leaving open the possibility Rice could ascend to National Security Adviser, a position that does not require Senate confirmation, over the next four years.
Her reluctant announcement Thursday makes Democratic Sen. John Kerry, the presidential contender in 2004, the likely choice to be the nation’s next top diplomat when Hillary Rodham Clinton departs soon. Rice withdrew when it became clear her political troubles were not going away, and support inside the White House for her potential nomination had been waning in recent days, administration officials said.
Obama used the occasion to criticize Republicans who were adamantly opposed to Rice’s possible nomination.
“While I deeply regret the unfair and misleading attacks on Susan Rice in recent weeks, her decision demonstrates the strength of her character,” he said.
“I am saddened we have reached this point,” Rice said.

Hillary Clinton faints, has concussion

Washington (CNN) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sustained a concussion after becoming dehydrated and fainting, a State Department official said.
Clinton had been suffering from a stomach virus at the time, according to a statement on Saturday from Philippe Reines, deputy assistant secretary of state.
She is being monitored by doctors and is recovering at home. She was never hospitalized, Reines said.
“At their recommendation, she will continue to work from home next week, staying in regular contact with Department and other officials. She is looking forward to being back in the office soon,” Reines said.
Clinton had been scheduled to testify next week before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on the deadly attack in September on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
But she is not expected to appear at that time because of the health issue.
The September 11, 2012, attack resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, and called into question the security of U.S. diplomatic personnel abroad.

The dropping of this news is suspect, in light of the CT shootings, Rice’s withdrawl, etc. Just too neatly packaged. Bottom line, Hillary gets out of appearing at the BENGHAZI hearings next week. She’s trying to hang low, because as SoS, she knows she’s the one who is ultimately responsible for the embassy events surrounding Benghazi.

It was so good to see Peanut last night. She was balm to my sad soul. I know that all those ‘Peanuts’ in CT had Aunties and Uncles and Grandparents that would have done anything to see them walk through their doors. My heart aches for them.
I know exactly how you feel, Rikyrah. so many family members affected by this tragedy.It infuriates me to no end, when I read or hear folks talk about their second amendment rights, during these murders, as if those children and teachers had no rights to be ALIVE.

A Tragedy of Silence

Another day, another mass shooting in America. When, and how, will this end? In fact, will it ever end?
On Friday, a gunman identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, killed 26 people, including 20 children between the ages 5 and 10, at a Connecticut elementary school. He is reported to have also killed his mother, a kindergarten teacher at the school, and committed suicide.
This comes after Jacob Roberts, a 22-year-old man, armed with a semiautomatic AR-15, carrying extra magazines and wearing a hockey mask walked into a shopping mall in Oregon filled with 10,000 people and began shooting. He killed two people, and then took his own life.

NRA Cancels Country Music Event After School Shooting

After this morning’s shooting at a Connecticut elementary school, the National Rifle Association cancelled a planned Twitter promotion with country music rapper Colt Ford. A live “Tweet & Greet” with Mr. Ford was scheduled for 1 p.m. (Central Time) this afternoon on the “NRA Country” account. However, shortly after the event’s planned start time, an announcement was posted on the NRA Country Twitter account that it would be rescheduled.
“Apologies for the inconvenience, but the @ColtFord Tweet & Greet will be rescheduled. Please check back for more info!” the announcement said.
We reached out to a spokeswoman for NRA Country to confirm that the cancellation of the “Tweet & Greet” was related to the shooting, which has already led to calls for tougher gun control legislation from several politicians. As of this writing, we have yet to receive a response.
