Natalie Barden, 10-Year-Old Sister Of Newtown Shooting Victim, Writes Letter To President Obama About Gun Control

In the wake of Friday’s horrific tragedy in Newtown, Conn., many are speaking out for gun control. Among them is 10-year-old Natalie Barden, whose brother, Daniel, was one of the shooting’s victims.
In a letter for President Obama that Anderson Cooper read on air on Tuesday night, Natalie wrote:
My name is Natalie Barden and I wanted to tell the president that only police officers and the military should get guns. If people want to do it as a sport than they could go to shooting range and the guns would not be able to leave there.
The letter was delivered to Cooper by Lillian Bittman, former Chair of the Newtown Board of Education, who said it was passed to her at Daniel Barden’s wake, and that the family wanted the host to share with viewers.
“This was [Natalie’s] little way of making a difference… It’s helping her heal, because now she can make Daniel’s life count for something and try to get this to the president and then hopefully to Congress and everyone else,” Bittman said.

Sites to go dark for Sandy Hook victims

Some major websites will go dark for one minute Friday at 9:30 a.m. ET as part of a national moment of silence for the victims of last week’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
It’s unclear how widespread participation will be online, but more than 100,000 people and sites have pledged to participate on the Causes.com page for the Web Goes Silent campaign. People and companies are also spreading the word by tweeting their intention to go quiet with the hashtag #momentforSandyHook.

STRATFORD, Conn. — She has come to be known for her instinctive heroism in saving the lives of many of her young students, but at her funeral on Wednesday, Victoria Soto, a first-grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, was remembered in a way that only those closest to her would have known.
She was a sister, a cousin and a friend, someone who had a passion for teaching but also a beguiling “goofball” side that delighted her friends and relatives.
The funeral service, the first of six for the school employees who died in the massacre that also took the lives of 20 children on Friday, was held in a classic steepled white New England church in the Lordship neighborhood of Stratford on the Long Island Sound, where Ms. Soto had lived all of her 27 years. Services were also held for Charlotte Bacon, 6; Daniel Barden, 7; and Caroline Previdi, 6. Wakes were held for Chase Kowalski, 7, and the school principal, Dawn Hochsprung, 47; their funerals were to be private.
So many people came to mourn Ms. Soto — perhaps 400 — at Lordship Community Church that half of the crowd endured the cold on chairs set up on a lawn outside the church, listening to the service on loudspeakers under a brilliant sun.
Her coffin, draped in white flowers, was carried into the church to the sorrowful sounds of three bagpipers as an honor guard of more than a dozen Connecticut police officers flanked the hearse and the other cars in the funeral caravan.

Paul Simon paid his respects to a teacher killed during Friday’s Connecticut school shooting by performing at her funeral on Wednesday.
Victoria Soto was one of the six staffmembers killed at Newtown’s Sandy Hook Elementary, where 20 children were also slain by suspected gunman Adam Lanza. Several of the children have already been laid to rest, and on Wednesday, Soto’s friends and family gathered in the town of Stratford to remember the 27-year-old teacher.
Simon was among the mourners at the Lordship Community Church, and he stepped up to perform “The Sound of Silence,” which was Soto’s favorite song. The singer knows the Soto family through his sister-in-law, according to the New York Daily News. Soto was hailed a heroine after the shootings when it emerged she died as she attempted to shield her class from the gunman.
Seeing those small caskets is the saddest sight in the world. Oh, it’s so horrendously painful.
Honoring the Sandy Hook Shooting Victims

RENO, NV.–Students at the University of Nevada will be holding a multi-faith memorial service in honor of the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School Tuesday afternoon.
It will include prayers by local Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Jewish leaders among others.
The service is to pay tribute to everyone touched by this tragedy.
The service is at the Joe Crowley Student Union, and everyone in our community is invited to attend.
It begins at 4 pm.

A message read at the funeral of 6-year-old Noah Pozner by his uncle Alexis Haller, of Woodinville, Wash.:
On Friday, Dec. 14, we tragically lost a most beloved member of our family. Noah was a 6-year-old little boy, and he was so dear to all of our hearts.
Words cannot express the unfathomable loss we feel.
Noah was a wonderful son and a loving brother. He was kind, caring, smart, funny, and sometimes even a little mischievous. He liked to tell his sisters that he worked in a taco factory; when they asked him how he got to work, he would give them a funny look as if to say he knew something that they didn’t.
Noah was a little kid. He loved animals, video games and Mario Brothers. He was already a very good reader, and had just bought a Ninjago book at a book fair that he was really excited about reading. He was also very excited about going to a birthday party he had been invited to. It was to take place on Saturday, Dec. 15.
Noah loved his family dearly, especially his mom, his dad, his big sisters Danielle and Sophia, his big brother Michael, and his dear twin Arielle. He called Arielle his best friend, and she was — and always had been.
If Noah had not been taken from us, he would have become a great man. He would been a wonderful husband and a loving father. He would have been a backbone of our family for years to come. His loss, and our loss, are deep indeed.
It is unspeakably tragic that none of us can bring Noah back. We would go to the ends of the Earth to do so, but none of us can.
What we can do is carry Noah within us, always. We can remember the joy he brought to us. We can hold his memory close to our hearts. We can treasure him forever. And all of us, including the family, the community, the country and the world, can honor Noah by loving each other and taking care of each other. That’s what Noah would have wanted.
Noah, we love you so much, we miss you dearly, and we will never, ever forget you.

Funerals begin for Newtown massacre victims

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The long and sad task of burying the children killed in the Newtown massacre began Monday afternoon, under dreary gray skies.
The first two children’s funerals took place 25 miles apart, one in this city on Long Island Sound, and one in Newtown itself.
Here in Fairfield, family and friends gathered to remember Noah Pozner, the very youngest of the shooting’s young victims. Pozner had just turned 6 on Nov. 20.
The family was receiving mourners inside the stately Victorian style Abraham L. Green and Son funeral home. White balloons tied with ribbons lined both sides of Beach Street leading to the home. “Our hearts are with you Noah,” read a green sign pinned to a tree in front.

A Seattle-area mom named Victoria, or @vdog to her Twitter followers, is the aunt of 6-year-old Noah Pozner, one of the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary. His funeral is today, and on Sunday, Noah’s parents asked his family members to write letters to be buried with the boy. Unable to get the letters to FedEx on a Sunday, Victoria tweeted several airlines to see if any of them could fly the letters — including a handmade card from Noah’s 5-year-old cousin — to Connecticut. Within 10 minutes, JetBlue responded, asking how it could get in touch with the family. “It’s the least we can do to help a family that’s been so tragically affected,” JetBlue tweeted. “We’re honored to do it.”
