Axelrod: ‘LaPierre’s Rant Was Truly Astonishing’

David Axelrod, a former top adviser on President Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns, responded to National Rifle Association executive vice president Wayne LaPierre’s Friday morning press conference with a sharply worded missive on Twitter:

LaPierre’s rant was truly astonishing. At a moment that demanded reflection, he sprayed rhetorical shots around the room.

They are the Tyrone Biggums of Interest Groups: On Political Crack, Post-Sandy Hook the NRA’s Solution is More Guns Equals Less Crime

I hope you will all be having a restful holiday weekend. I send you well-wishes and good energy for the New Year and I appreciate all of the good folks who contribute to our conversations here on WARN. I have two great podcasts on the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, race, masculinity, and America’s gun culture, that I will be sharing after the holiday. Do look out for them.

The NRA has finally chimed in on the Newtown Shooting. The public is exhausted by our “national” conversation about mass shootings and “gun rights.” The NRA’s timing was great insofar as most folks are distracted by the holidays and will not be watching the news. Fate has a dark sense of humor: the NRA conference devolved into a spectacle; and as timing would have it, there was a shooting in Pennsylvania, leaving four people dead, which coincided with the former event.

If the NRA Wants an Armed Guard at Every School, They Should Pay for It

As Charles and Dave have already Slogged, the NRA’s solution to the Newtown massacre is, of course, to arm our nation’s schools:

“I call on Congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation,” LaPierre said.
Hmm. Let’s see. There are about 100,000 public K-12 schools in the nation, but since this is a public safety expense, not an educational one, we should probably protect children at the 30,000 or so private schools as well. So LaPierre’s proposal would require hiring an additional 130,000 police officers. At least. Some large campuses would probably require more than one officer. So let’s round up to 150,000 armed police officers, just to be safe.

What would this cost? According to the US Department of Justice, the national average annual cost of employing a police officer was $116,500 in 2007. Rounding up to $120,000 to account for inflation, that’s $120,000 times 150,000 officers: LaPierre’s proposal would cost taxpayers about $18 billion a year.

You got that right, Ametia–NRA is “BATSHIT CRAZY,” and their tactics are deplorable! What’s even more deplorable though is the fact that many American citizens are buying into NRA’s logic. Believe it or not this disgusting message below just ran across my Facebook news feed the other day–a link that a so-called FB “friend” shared with me. I was so incensed I gave my “friend” a piece of my mind then politely canceled her friendship (no love lost though becuz I didn’t even know her personally anyway). Here’s a screenshot of the despicable link that targets our First Family–I dare not share the link.

Backfire: The Disgusting NRA Press Conference
George Zornick on December 21, 2012 – 2:08 PM ET

I fully expected National Rifle Association to hold a press conference this morning that would help blunt the momentum for gun control legislation now building in Washington: to solemnly pay tribute to those lost at Sandy Hook; to pledge to work with all sides to stop this form happening again while subtly trying to shift the conversation more towards mental health issues and heck, maybe video games too. It would make the NRA seem reasonable, and concerned, and give hesitant members of Congress some comfort in sticking to the NRA line.

Instead, NRA Vice President Wayne LaPierre unloaded a 30-round magazine of crazy. He bizarrely called for a national database of the mentally ill, bashed decade-old video games that nobody plays anymore, and invoked the spectre of a lawless America after a hurricane or “man-made disaster,” in which every citizen would need a gun to defend him or herself. (This is, incidentally, not unlike the mindset that reportedly led Nancy Lanza to stockpile weapons in her home).

THIS: The “gun side” can always double-down on the crazy yet reasonable people must remain reasonable. This pulls the debate to their terms always. How’s about mandatory life sentence for anyone possessing any firearm ( after a grace period for turning in your gun) and we’ll compromise from there?

  10. Vettte says:

This is one of the saddest days I’ve ever seen in our nations history. The NRA advocating guns in and around school aged children shows a desperate fear that is beyond belief. Grown men who have locked up as many AA men as they can are hell bent on school-aged children NOT turning 18 alive and NOT being able to vote. This is a desperate move to protect these guns over the well-being of children in our communities. Also on this day when the House of Representatives is sooo dysfunctional that it can’t approve anything is disheartening. I never expected to see so much hate because they can’t control this country manifest itself in this way. How long will this go on? How many years will it take before the minorities truly become the majorities in the bulk of these congressional districts in order to gain fairness? And if this is what it looks like having to experience the tactics and strategies of desperate people fearful of loosing control of this country, maybe I’ll just become more and more fearful of stepping outside of my house for fear of them killing me so I wont ever be able to vote again.

    Charles Pierce

he National Rifle Association today held a press conference today at which it was determined that there would be no questions asked or answered, but the organization made it quite clear that they would be open to media questions next week, between Christmas and New Year’s. Then they trotted out Wayne LaPierre, who had bats flying out of both ears

It’s a dangerous world out there full of crazy people, Wayne told us. It’s a dangerous world full of bloody video games, bad Oliver Stone movies, and a media that only cares about misinforming people about the guns that Wayne and the people who have paid his salary over the past 20 years want to sell to us to employ to protect our most precious children, to whom we don’t give the same level of protection that we give to Yankee Stadium or to the president of the United States. You see, Wayne is up there, not taking questions, because, really, the only people who truly care about the safety of all of our most precious children are the people like him, making sure that we have enough good guys with guns to protect us from the bad guys with guns. And here’s Asa Hutchinson to explain how our latest dodge is going to work.

If LaPierre is still invited to appear on Meet the Press this weekend, NBC should be embarrassed.http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/nra-shooting-press-conference-122112

The Most Revolting Press Conference In History
    by James Schlarmann
    December 21, 2012

Wayne LaPierre is either the most comically evil or comically stupid person on the face of the Earth. A week ago today, twenty kindergartners and six adults whose job it was to protect those children were mowed down by a man carrying weaponry that no citizen has any rightful purpose to own. For the last week, LaPierre’s group, The National Rifle Association, has remained silent. They pulled their Facebook page down and their twitter account did send out any “Yay Guns!” tweets. Then a couple of days ago they broke their silence and said they were holding a major press conference today, which I just watched, and now I find myself furiously pounding away at the keys, trying to hold together the outright rage I feel inside for LaPierre and his organization.

So why did the NRA wait for an entire week to speak out on the terrible tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut? Were they going through a period of intense reflection over at the NRA? Remember, this is the group that has force-fed the public nothing but pro-gun fear mongering about how President Obama was going to take their guns away (he actually only signed two pieces of gun legislation in his first term, both of them expanding the list of areas it was permissible by Federal law to carry a firearm). This is the group that held a convention just over a week after the massacre in Columbine in 1999, a conference that produced the now infamous Chuck Heston sound byte, encouraging people to pry his gun out of his “cold, dead hands.” If you were expecting some kind of rational and cogent concession that their actions in the last thirty years especially have helped create a hyper-obsessed gun culture that has helped lead to an epidemic of mass shootings in this country, you can keep waiting forever. LaPierre’s audacity knows no bounds, apparently. The NRA’s big solution to gun violence in schools?

    Armed guards. On our playgrounds.

First he needed to excoriate the media of course for their ignorance in gun specifications. It’s the go-to NRA rhetoric. “See how dumb these non-gun loving people are? They don’t even know that this gun is actually semi-automatic, and isn’t anything like BLAH BLAH BLAH.” Then LaPierre decided to inform us all it is all the media’s fault for demonizing gun owners. It’s certainly not the fault of the mother who knew she had an unstable son and decided to buy military-style firearms anyway. No, of course not. It’s the media’s fault.

NRA: “The answer to gun violence is gun fights” – Gun fetishism IS a mental illness

NRA Exceeds Even My Expectations for Total Derangement
—By Kevin Drum| Fri Dec. 21, 2012 9:38 AM PST

In his first extensive public remarks since the mass shooting at a Connecticut school last Friday, the head of National Rifle Association called Friday for lawmakers to take action to put police officers in schools in an effort to curb violent outbreaks like the one that took place last week.

“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said at a news conference in Washington…. “Politicians pass laws for gun-free school zones, they issue press releases bragging about them … in doing so they tell every insane killer in America that schools are the safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk,” said LaPierre, head of the nation’s largest gun-rights group.

LaPierre wants you to be afraid of monsters
    Smartypants

I thought about going through his speech to count every time he used words like “monster” or “predator.” But seriously, I can’t stomach it. Here’s the crux of this man’s totally depraved view of the world.
The truth is, that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters. People that are so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons, that no sane person can ever possibly comprehend them. They walk among us every single day, and does anybody really believe that the next Adam Lanza isn’t planning his attack on a school, he’s already identified at this very moment?
I could write thousands of words about how sick and depraved Mr. LaPierre’s solutions to gun violence are. But they all stem from this view of humanity…we need to be afraid of and arm ourselves against the “monsters” among us. Without that – he has no case to make for his recommendations.
