Obama may or may not fiddle around with CPI; even if he does, that’s hardly the trillion dollar windfall “financial advisors” have been dreaming about.
ACA? GOP-governed states have opted out. That means the Federal government will set up exchanges for the people in those states. I frankly don’t know if they’ll be required to buy through the exchanges, or if they’ll be able to take their subsidies and go to an insurance company on their own. If the latter, that will be on the grifters’ radar. (And lord knows, people who voted in the GOP governors in the first place will be dumb enough to get fleeced by non-existent insurance companies.)
What if they decide the GOP faithful are played out, and decide to try working the left-hand side of the street?

Romney Lost Because No One Liked Him

The Boston Globe retrospective on the Romney campaign is not bad. It hits most of the marks on why Romney failed, from having to deal with a nutty primary season, to getting defined by Obama in the spring and summer, to failing to present a human side, to running a lousy and inefficient organization. But the real key to the campaign was that Romney is a jerk who no one likes and that he lies more than any human being on the planet. If I had a time machine and I could go back and run Romney’s campaign, I would hook him to an electrode and shock him every time he lied. Once he was cured of that, I’d tell him to talk about his family about 90% of the time.
But the truth is that you can’t take a jerk and turn him into a nice guy. They tried it with Bush and it didn’t work. Yes, the Supreme Court and a Butterfly ballot made him president, but no one really liked him and he was never popular outside of a couple of years after 9/11 when people were wiling to give him the benefit of the doubt. Look how that turned out.

Tagg Romney said his father “wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life,” according to the Boston Globe.
“He had no desire,” the eldest Romney son said. “If he could have found someone else to take his place … he would have been ecstatic to step aside. He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them, but he has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn’t love the attention.”
Tagg Romney told the paper that his father was resistant to running because of his unsuccessful 2008 bid for president.
The oldest Romney son was an instrumental figure in his father’s political career. He served as an adviser to the 2012 campaign, and has worked on previous campaigns.
Like his father, Tagg Romney attended Brigham Young University and earned his MBA from Harvard Business School. However, he told the New York Times that “I’d be really surprised if I did [run for office]. It’s a really horrible process, and honestly I just don’t want to go through it.”

“Exit polls told a stunning story. The majority of voters preferred Romney’s visions, values, and leadership. But he had clearly failed to address the problem that Romney’s own family worried about from the start. Obama beat Romney by an astonishing 81 to 18 percent margin on the question of which candidate “cares about people like me.”
This race was the “canary in the coal mine” for white folks and they are very resistant to learning its lessons. They are still stunned….the white guy should have won it. Yet when they report the facts (in this article no less) the dominance and the competence of OFA are painfully obvious.
Romney’s first choice of campaign manager was Mike Murphy who declined because he’s rather write screenplays in California. His second choice was Stuart Stevens who is very proud of being a screenwriter.
Screenwriters? Seriously? This speaks to the fundamental grounding in fantasy that white privilege produces. Life is not a movie. Presidents are not handsome white male action figures and that’s all you need to present to the public. Facts matter, political skills matter and people of color know the emperor has no clothes. When a credible alternative appeared to the “great white father” routine we took it.
I’m more interested in learning why white folks like Axelrod, Bird and Cutter see the real America (and that the emperor is nekked) while the majority of white America does not, and might be constitutionally unable to.

My Barack Obama Biography
Born in Hawaii, to a mother from Kansas and a father from Kenya, in 1961 and named Barack Hussein Obama II, Barack Obama was truly born at the bottom of the barrel.
No, Barack was not born in the hells of poverty or inner city violence, but for a young man who would want to serve his country and be president, the situation couldn’t have been much worse.
From the ages of six to ten Obama lived in Indonesia with his mom’s second husband; not a great resume enhancer for a future US politician. Then he was moved back to Hawaii, to live with his grandparents.
From there, he progressed and stumbled through adolescence and made his grades, but became a bit of a young bum, partying and doing drugs. Then he straightened out, at his mother’s orders. Par for the course for the average young guy, but not him.
The young Mr. Obama excelled in school after that, all the way through Harvard Law School. It has been said that he benefited from affirmative action rules that gave racial minorities advanced placement in schools and colleges. I hope so. We certainly needed that and any laws that help more people have access to higher education. Either way, I think president Obama has made Harvard proud.
The rest is history.
There is no ‘bootstraps to greatness’ story like his, in American history.

Mitt Romney’s transition team spent $8.9 million in government money, $740,000 on furniture

Mitt Romney was the first presidential candidate in a position to make use of the Presidential Transition Act of 2010, and boy did he ever make use of it, to the tune of $8.9 million.
The Presidential Transition Act gives presidential nominees resources to plan their transition to the presidency ahead of the actual election, to help ensure that they’re fully prepared to hit the ground running as president. The Romney campaign’s use of those resources was governed by the General Services Administration, but even within those constraints, it reminds you that this is a campaign that’s facing complaints from nine media outlets over inflated costs on the campaign trail. How do you spend $8.9 million?
The design, construction and space planning for the Romney team’s office space, which took up multiple floors in the Mary E. Switzer building a couple miles from the White House, cost about $2.5 million. The furniture bill came in around $740,000, and basics like office supplies cost about $30,000. The biggest chunk by far came from communications and related hardware. Items such as IT services, computer equipment and cell phones cost $5.6 million. The GSA noted that some of the resources would be recycled; Dell Latitude Laptops bought for Romney’s 500-strong transition team, for example, will be used by other parts of the federal government. Rent charges were waived by the GSA, as they traditionally are for transition teams during the President-Elect phase
That’s $1,480 in furniture, $60 in office supplies, and $11,200 in computers, cell phones, and IT services for each member of Romney’s transition team. In addition to the rent being waived, salaries are not included in what the GSA covers. By contrast, in 2008, when Barack Obama was actually elected president and began his transition after the election:
Mr. Podesta said he expected the transition to employ some 450 people and have a budget of about $12 million. Of that amount, $5.2 million will be paid by the government, with the remaining $6.8 million coming from private sources, he said. Contributions will be limited to $5,000, he said, and the transition will not accept money from political action committees

This week, I discussed the chained CPI proposal of indexing government spending and taxing, including determining the cost-of-living-adjustment increases for Social Security. For holding the simple common sense view that a slightly smaller increase is not a “cut” (except in the same sense that each year lived longer is an “increase” in benefits) I earned some accolades from The Moment of Truth Project (founded by Simpson and Bowles of the Presidential Fiscal Commission), and very nasty piece of mention calling me a “mentally unstable Obot”

Perhaps that came out of someone commenting on the fact that I have been open and out about having mental health issues about a decade ago, which I was proud to get treated. Isn’t it nice to be a “progressive” and be able to make fun of mental health?
Be that as it may, today’s discussion is really about something else. It’s about rank hypocrisy among the radicals who are hopping mad at the president for offering the chained CPI method of adjusting government spending and revenues as part of the fiscal cliff negotiations. Their position essentially is this: if a slightly smaller COLA increase has to be part of a deal to avoid or end the fiscal cliff, then we should simply go over the fiscal cliff. That it isn’t worth it to take that small adjustment to COLA increases because it will hurt the most vulnerable the worst.
Since they are willing to trade the fiscal cliff to maintain a status quo on Social Security’s COLA increases, let’s see the actual price they are willing to pay.
The big picture: economy and unemployment.

Harry Reid wants a replacement for the recently-deceased Senator Daniel Inouye stat. Hawai’i Governor Neil Abercrombie must select someone from three names that will be provided by the state’s Democratic Party. The Party leadership will convene at 8am on December 26th. Sen. Inouye sent a letter to Gov. Abercrombie shortly before his death in which he endorsed Rep. Colleen Hanabusa as his replacement. I think this makes it very likely that Rep. Hanabusa will wind up being the next senator from Hawai’i.
My memory may be imperfect, but I think I only contributed money to one candidate this year, and that was Rep. Mazie Hirono. She was elected to replace Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawai’i. She would have been the first Asian-American woman in the Senate and the first (non-practicing) Buddhist in the Senate. If Hanabusa is appointed before the end of the year, Hirono will be the second in both categories.
I have a lot of respect for both Senator Inouye and Senator Akaka, but I think Hirono and Hanabusa will be significantly more progressive in both their policies and their style. According to Progressive Punch, Hirono is the 9th most progressive member of the House and Hanabusa is tied for the 103rd most progressive member of the House. Of the two, Hirono is clearly the stronger liberal, but Hanabusa’s record is quite strong. She has a better lifetime progressive score than people like Reps. Bobby Scott, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Pete DeFazio, and Dennis Kucinich.
If Hanabusa gets the nod, it will increase the infusion of estrogen into the Senate. She’ll be joining not only Mazie Hirono, but Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Baldwin, Heidi Heitkamp, and Deb Fischer. Because of the loss of Kay Bailey Hutchison and Olympia Snowe, that is only a net increase of four women, but that’s progress. Of the six new women in the Senate, five will be Democrats.

Critiques of President Obama’s negotiating style are certainly warranted, but the most boring thing in the world is the suggestion that the president is really a moderate Republican who wants to move the Democratic Party to the right and gut entitlements. We have control of half of Congress, and any suggestion that we can get 100% of what we want if only we are more inflexible is moronic. The only real debate is over what we are willing to give up, not whether or not we have to give anything up. So, progressives should put themselves in the shoes of a negotiator and ask themselves honestly what they are willing to sacrifice and what they want in return. This talk of rainbows and ponies needs to end.
