    The NRA gets personal.

If President Obama wanted to let his black side flow and get physical with those NRA folks, I honestly couldn’t blame him. I mean those people are going after the man’s children for crying out loud! Now it just got personal.

“In a sign of how brutal, emotional and deeply personal the coming battle over gun violence is likely to be, the National Rifle Association on Tuesday accused President Barack Obama of hypocrisy for having Secret Service protect his daughters even as he opposes the group’s call for armed guards in schools.

The Web video, first obtained by The Blaze, opens with a narrator asking, “Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school?”

The 35-second video makes no effort to hide the tension and animosity between the NRA and Obama, even stepping into the recent “fiscal cliff” debate. The video continues:

“Mr. Obama demands that the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes but he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security,” as an altered image of the president peers over a stack of dollar bills, followed by images of “Meet the Press” host David Gregory, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Vice President Joe Biden.” [Source]

When they start going after your kids you know it’s serious.

But they didn’t stop there. Wingnuts are talking impeachment as well. Something to do with his executive orders and gun control. Actually, O has had less executive orders than all the other American presidents in recent history. But who cares about facts?

  2. President Barack Obama: Now is the time

    http://www.ctpost.com/opinion/article/President-Barack-Obama-Now-is-the-time-4200101.php?cmpid=twitter

As a society, our first task must be to care for our children — to shield them from harm and give them the tools they need not only to pursue their dreams, but to help build this country. That is how we will be judged. And in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, it’s clear we have a long way to go.

That’s why, last month, I asked Vice President Biden to lead an effort to come up with concrete steps we can take right now to keep our kids safe, help prevent mass shootings, and reduce the broader epidemic of gun violence in this country. And on Wednesday, I put forward a specific set of proposals based on Joe’s recommendations. Because while there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, if there is even one thing we can do to reduce this violence — if even one life can be saved — we have an obligation to try.

As President, I’m committed to doing my part. That’s why I signed 23 executive actions giving law enforcement, schools, mental health professionals, and the public health community the tools they need to help reduce gun violence.

These actions ranged from strengthening our background check system, to helping schools hire more resource officers and counselors if they want them, to directing the Centers for Disease Control to study the best ways to reduce gun violence.

    More..

    Defining ‘power grabs’ down

    By Steve Benen

    Wed Jan 16, 2013 2:28 PM EST.

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, is not pleased with President Obama’s new agenda on preventing gun violence, but Priebus’ statement raises some follow-up questions the RNC may want to consider.

“President Obama’s series of gun control measures amount to an executive power grab that may please his political base but will not solve the problems at hand. He paid lip service to our fundamental constitutional rights, but took actions that disregard the 2nd Amendment and the legislative process. Representative government is meant to give voice to the people; President Obama’s unilateral executive action ignores this principle.”

I suspect we’ll hear quite a bit of this kind of talk today and as the larger policy debate continues, but it’s worth pausing to consider what actually happened this morning.

The bulk of the president’s agenda, not surprisingly, requires legal changes, which necessarily means it will be dependent on congressional action. At the same time, Obama also went as far as he could go in areas that don’t need congressional approval, taking steps like nominating a new AFT director and informing state health officials about the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

These “amount to an executive power grab” because … well, actually I haven’t the foggiest idea why they amount to an executive power grab. Here’s a question for Priebus: name one of the executive orders that seems offensive and/or legally excessive. Just one.

EXCLUSIVE: Unmasking the NRA’s Inner Circle

The NRA’s shadowy leaders include the CEO who sells Bushmaster assault rifles and a top director who lives in Newtown.

—By Frank Smyth | Wed Jan. 16, 2013 3:06 AM PST

The resurgent debate over gun control has put a spotlight on the hardline leaders of the National Rifle Association. In the wake of the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, executive vice president Wayne LaPierre delivered a full-throated rejection of gun control and called for more firearms in schools, while David Keene, the group’s president, predicted the failure of any new assault weapons ban introduced in Congress. The two NRA figureheads purported to speak for more than 4 million American gun owners, though the group’s membership may in fact be smaller.

      Federal Assault Weapons Ban
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB), or Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, was a subtitle of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law in the United States that included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms, so called “assault weapons”.

The 10-year ban was passed by Congress on September 13, 1994, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton the same day. The ban only applied to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban’s enactment.

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law’s sunset provision. There have been multiple attempts to renew the ban,[1] but no bill has reached the House floor for a vote.

    http://tpm.ly/W7dKEK

In a letter sent to his lieutenant governor and the state speaker of the house that was posted on his Facebook page, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) on Wednesday called for immediate legislation that would make any “unconstitutional order” on gun policy taken by President Barack Obama “illegal to enforce in Mississippi by state and local law enforcement.”

Bryant wrote that the president’s executive actions on guns — which Obama and Vice President Joe Biden unveiled on Wednesday — would likely infringe on the Second Amendment “as never before in American history.”
