Charles Person was a freshman at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia when he was selected to take part in the 1961 Freedom Rides. While he was the youngest of the thirteen original Riders who departed from Washington, DC, Person had already proven his commitment through his participation in the sit-in movement in Atlanta. While taking part in the original CORE Freedom Ride, Person and fellow Riders were beaten by Klansmen on a bus in Anniston, Alabama. Unwilling to succumb to violence, Person and other battered Riders pressed on, eventually making it to New Orleans, albeit with the help of the Kennedy Administration. After the 1961 Freedom Rides, Person joined the Unites States Marines, where he served twenty years of active duty. Following his military service, Person worked for the Atlanta public school system. He is now retired and lives in Atlanta.
The youngest member of the original 1961 Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) Freedom Ride, 18-year-old Charles Person was a freshman at Atlanta’s Morehouse College. Born and raised in Atlanta, Person had been surrounded by reminders of segregation throughout his life. A gifted math and physics student who dreamed of a career as a scientist, he was refused admission to the all-white Georgia Institute of Technology. While at Morehouse, he became active in the Atlanta sit-in movement to integrate segregated lunch counters in early 1961 and was sentenced to 16 days in jail as a result.
Along with Jim Peck and Walter Bergman, Person was one of the most badly beaten of the Riders during the May 14, 1961 riot at the Birmingham Trailways Bus Station.

Obama Called Parents Of Teen Slain In Chicago

President Barack Obama called the parents of a 15-year-old Chicago girl who was gunned down this week at a South Side park, the family’s pastor confirmed.
Rev. Courtney Maxwell of Greater Deliverance Temple said Obama made the call earlier this week.
Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon while hanging out with friends. News of her death sparked national outrage as legislators discuss gun reform and comparisons are drawn between local gun violence and the country’s recent massacres.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced and despite a petition asking Obama to attend the girl’s funeral, Maxwell said there is no word on a response.

Ex-senator Scott Brown won’t run for Kerry seat
Former senator Scott Brown will not run for the seat of departing Sen. John Kerry in Massachusetts, the Associated Press reports.
The decision by Brown, a moderate Republican, means Democrats now have a better chance of keeping the Massachusetts seat.
Brown was defeated in November by Democrat Elizabeth Warren, in the nation’s most expensive Senate race. Democrats had made Brown a top target since he was the surprise winner of a 2010 race to replace Democrat Edward Kennedy, who died the previous summer.

The new regulation attempts to create a barrier between religious groups and contraception coverage, through insurers or a third party, that would still give women free access to contraception. It’s no secret that pro-gun lobbyists like the National Rifle Association (NRA) overwhelmingly support Republican politicians. It’s an old joke that Republicans tend to campaign with a “God, Guns, [anti-]Gays” platform and, like many well-worn clichés, it keeps getting repeated because there’s more than a little truth to it.
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, John McCain is–by far–the recipient of the most generous donations from “gun rights” organizations. He receives about $400,000 more than John Thune (R-SD), who received the second highest total amount of monetary gifts from pro-gun groups.

In 2007, US Air Force Academy graduate Jon Gibbon saw a television interview about Craigslist that got him thinking. The online classifieds site had decided to reject ads for firearms, and Gibbon thought he had spotted an opportunity. “When I heard them say that they decided to ban all gun-related ads because a few users cried out for it, it inspired me to create a place for law-abiding gun owners to buy and sell online without all of the hassles of auctions and shipping,” he told Human Events in 2010.
So Gibbon hooked up with his academy buddy Brian Mancini, and two years later the pair launched a website they thought was destined to fill a natural void in the online marketplace: Armslist, a website devoted specifically to the private sales of guns and related gear. The site allows private sellers to offer guns for sale to other private purchasers. Buyers can contact sellers via phone or email to set up the sale, and avoid going through a federal background check or even leaving a paper trail. Such transactions are more anonymous than purchasing a weapon at a gun show, where people who can’t pass a background check can buy large quantities of guns.

Suicide bomber kills guard at U.S. embassy in Turkey

(Reuters) – A suicide bomber killed a Turkish security guard at the U.S. embassy in Ankara on Friday, blowing the door off a side entrance and sending smoke and debris flying into the street.
Ankara Governor Alaaddin Yuksel said the attacker was inside U.S. property when the explosives were detonated. The blast sent masonry spewing out of the wall of the side entrance, but there did not appear to be any more significant structural damage.
The bomber was also killed.
U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardone emerged through the main gate of the building, which is surrounded by high walls, shortly after the explosion to address reporters, flanked by a security detail as a Turkish police helicopter hovered overhead.
“We are very sad of course that we lost one of our Turkish guards at the gate,” Ricciardone he said, thanking the Turkish authorities for a prompt response.

I was reminded of a few key things today. The first is that the Republican party in Washington has no regrets about the Iraq War. McCain and Butters reveled in the same utter certainty of their moral and strategic high ground today as they did in the run-up to the worst foreign policy mistake since Vietnam, after the worst national security lapse since Pearl Harbor. Sure, we were so negligent we allowed more than 3,000 innocents to be mass-murdered not far from where I am typing this; yes, we reacted to the atrocity by bungling the search for the actual culprits, brutally torturing countless suspects (some to death), and then starting a second war on false grounds that cost a trillion dollars and tens of thousands of American and Iraqi lives. But you, Mr Hagel, were wrong about the surge!
He wasn’t, as I have long argued. The promise of the surge was to buy enough time and peace to get the sectarian mess of post-Saddam Iraq to resolve itself peacefully and form a viable non-sectarian polity. That hasn’t happened. What we have is a Shiite authoritarian government in open conflict with both the Sunnis and the Kurds – and greater Iranian influence in the country. The surge did dampen some violence, but the collapse in mass murder was more a result of a political decision by the Anbar tribes to turn against the Sunni extremists, exhaustion after a long period of ethnic cleansing and segregation, and American money to bribe away the rest. It was a face-saver for a war that had manifestly failed.
Then there is Hagel’s heresy on the question of Israel. Although he is, like most of us, a supporter of the Jewish state, he recoiled in the Senate at the way in which the Greater Israel Lobby choreographs the voting. He just refused to do the necessary grand plié whenever AIPAC’s emissaries came with their bills and resolutions to be rubber-stamped by the Senate. He dared to think outside the box of American foreign policy options called “What The Israeli Far Right Wants”.
He even at one point raised the possibility – are you sitting down? – of containment in foreign policy, the doctrine that guided the Cold War for generations. This puts him waaay outside the mainstream that gave us the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It made him, in James Inhofe’s view, a virtual emissary of the Revolutionary Guards or in Ted Cruz’s fetid brain, an ally of Jihadism. But if you are McCain and Graham and go to a foreign country, Israel, and on foreign soil, side with that country’s prime minister in a diplomatic showdown with your own US president, you are fine and dandy, and any implication that they might be putting another country’s interests above your own is a disgusting anti-Semitic slur. But if you are a Nebraskan war hero who dares to think about containment, rather than a new cycle in a global religious war, you are effectively called an Iranian double-agent in the Senate itself:

U.S. economy adds 157,000 jobs in January

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) – The U.S. created a less-than expected 157,000 jobs in January and the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9%, but the economy added more jobs in 2012 than previously estimated, with a large chunk coming in the final months of the year.
Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected an increase of 170,000 jobs last month, with unemployment dipping to 7.7% from 7.8%. Employment gains for December and November were revised sharply higher, according to new Labor Department figures released Friday. The number of new jobs created in December was revised to 196,000 from 155,000. November’s figure was revised to 247,000 – the biggest increase in 10 months – from 161,000. The large gains in hiring in January took place in retail, construction, health care and wholesale trade.

The first couple days of the trip for the Freedom Riders, with stops in Virginia and North and South Carolina were relatively uneventful. Several white men attacked members of the group in Rock Hill, South Carolina but the fight was quickly broken up by police. When the buses stopped in Atlanta, Georgia, they were greeted by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. King warned the leaders that he had heard of Klan members planning something at the next stop in Anniston, Alabama. On Sunday, May 15, 1961, as the Greyhound bus carrying the Freedom Riders pulled into the Anniston station, a group of white men surrounded the bus. One unidentified white man sat in front of Greyhound bus to prevent it from leaving the station while the others broke bus windows and punctured the bus bus tires shouting, “Let’s kill these niggers and nigger-lovers.” (AP Photo)
Freedom Rider Catherine Burks-Brooks of Birmingham, now 71, said one scene will stay with her forever, revealing the depth of hatred on their attackers’ faces and in their words.
“To see the expressions on white women’s faces screaming, ‘Kill the niggers. Kill the niggers.’ That sticks with me,” she said.
