Elizabeth Warren’s Aggressive Questioning Prompts Anger From Wall Street

Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-Mass.) meeting with bank regulators Thursday left bankers reeling, after she questioned why regulators had not prosecuted a bank since the financial crisis.
At one point, Warren asked why the book value of big banks was lower, when most corporations trade above book value, saying there could be only two reasons for it.
“One would be because nobody believes that the banks’ books are honest,” she said. “Second, would be that nobody believes that the banks are really manageable. That is, if they are too complex either for their own institutions to manage them or for the regulators to manage them.”
That set off angry responses to Politico’s Morning Money. “While Senator Warren had every right to ask pointed questions at today’s Senate Banking Committee hearing, her claim that ‘nobody believes’ that bank books are honest is just plain wrong,” a “top executive” emailed the financial newsletter. “Perhaps someone ought to remind the Senator that the campaign is over and she should act accordingly if she wants to be taken seriously.”
The anonymous emailer said Warren was being as “extreme” as fellow freshman Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who asserted Tuesday without evidence that secretary of defense nominee Chuck Hagel may have received money from “extreme or radical” groups.
In another email, a GOP bank lobbyist said, “Republicans also would like to know why the Democratic donor base has avoided trial. Maybe she should subpoena the DSCC and Obama’s super PAC to answer her question.”
Consumer Bankers Association CEO Richard Hunt was slightly more diplomatic. “We have been through more tests and thorough exams than any college student over the past four years, including many conducted by the CFPB. The results of the Hamilton Partners Financial Index and the testimony of OCC Comptroller [Thomas] Curry were very clear: the United States banking system is safe and sound, supported by historic and permanent capital ratios. We are working every day to fulfill the financial needs of the American consumer and small business and will continue to work with any and all lawmakers who seek to assist in this extremely important process.”
Bankers and other members of the finance community have opposed Warren as she rose from being a Harvard University law school professor to a Massachusetts senator. They opposed her permanent nomination to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which she created. After Senate Republicans said that they would filibuster her nomination, she ran for Senate in Massachusetts. Wall Street donated heavily to her opponent, former Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), but she won the seat. Warren became a member of the Senate Banking Committee, despite further heavy opposition from banking lobbyists.
During the hearing, Warren asked why ordinary people often faced prosecution while banks do not.
“You know, I just want to note on this. There are district attorneys and U.S. attorneys who are out there every day squeezing ordinary citizens on sometimes very thin grounds. And taking them to trial in order to make an example, as they put it. I’m really concerned that too big to fail has become too big for trial,” she said. “That just seems wrong to me.”

The Gathering Danger of Marco (Polo!) Rubio

Please allow me a quick, personal point of privilege. I’d like to give a quick shout out to PoliticusUSA and all its writers. I’ve been following you guys for some time now and I am honored to be joining your ranks.
Readers, welcome to my debut column. I’d like to thank Mr. Jason Easley for kindly affording me this opportunity and this great platform, to percolate my thoughts, share my concerns about the state of our union. And speaking of the state of our union, we had a SOTU address delivered on Tuesday night. Likely, you all watched the SOTU and have seen pundits from both sides dissect it again and again by now. So I won’t be redundant and go through the actual address again.
Instead, let me focus on the bleak and tempest future I saw before us in the Democratic Party. No, for reals, y’all. Let me issue a cautionary note to my progressive friends whose hearts may still be giddy with and inebriated by, the president’s speech.
Fellow Democrats, I am drowning in fear. Here is the stream of thought that has been coursing through the estuary of my mind: Senator Marco Rubio did a bang-bang-up job in his response Tuesday night. The way he performed, he could be Jesus walking on water, or Moses parting the Red Sea.
Anyway, I get the sense that God has already anointed Rubio the savior of the Republican Party, leader of a new right-wing tidal wave. Rubio floated in to fill the overflowing boat shoes left by the indomitable Mitt Romney, “Mr. Land O’ Lakes” himself…and I am deeply concerned that Rubio, with his brimming pool of charisma, will lead the GOP out of the desert.
He is clearly picking up the mantle of the “NEW” Republican’t Party by putting a new, watery-smooth face on their same dehydrated ideas. He unleashed a deluge of rebuttals that absolutely muted the waterfall of “Fair Deal” ideas spigoted by the president. Rubio, drenched in confidence, easily ebbed and flowed around the president’s dry and mouthy offerings. Rubio made much of it feel like dribbles from an amphibian tongue.
And worst of all, Rubio did it in thunderstorm fashion…fast, smooth, striking, just a torrent aching to surge.
I am sweating the prospect of Rubio 2016. No, seriously, I am literally wiping sweat from my face.
As a life-long liberal, I am afraid that we will not be able to field a candidate that can match the Niagara fluidity of Rubio’s mind. I fear we will end up pushing the same soggy ideas, and either remain submerged in the American conscience, or be swiftly mopped up by the fountain of youth that is Marco (Polo!) Rubio.

Sequestration Nation

Joshua Green over at Bloomberg News has one theory why Republicans are so eager to let sequestration kick in: it’ll hurt Dem districts more, a Bloomberg study finds:
The study shows that Democratic congressional districts will be harder hit by the military cuts than Republican ones, and that eight of the top 10 districts that will experience the deepest cuts are represented by Democrats. Robert Levinson, the Bloomberg Government defense analyst who conducted the study, found that “Democrats won 47 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives in the 2012 election, but 58 percent of the military’s fiscal 2012 prime contract spending went to companies performing work in those districts.” Among the top districts, military spending in those represented by Democrats averaged $893 million this year, vs. $573 million in those represented by Republicans.
Which districts will experience the most pain? Topping the list is Missouri’s first district, which is represented by Democrat William Lacy Clay and received $11.4 billion in “prime defense contract dollars.” Interestingly, Clay may not have to worry. Much of the defense work in his district is done by Boeing for the Saudi government and therefore won’t get cut. Democratic Representative James Moran, on the other hand, is probably concerned about the $11.3 billion sent to Virginia’s eighth district. Rounding out the top three is Republican Representative Kay Granger, whose Texas 12th district received $9.8 billion last year. Representative Morris Brooks of Alabama’s fifth district is the only other Republican in the top 10, with $5.9 billion in contracts headed his way.
Now defense pork is still defense pork, but I’d have to say that this explains at least somewhat the GOP about face on the sequester in the last month or so, and why they’ve been trying to do everything they can to shift blame for it to the Democrats. The bigger issue is that Republicans are completely okay with the sequester at this point as long at Dem voters get hurt. And considering a lot of actually useful things in the defense budget are going to get the axe (VA programs, medical care, VAWA provisions for the military, etc) well, as long as Dems feel pain, the Republicans don’t seem to mind at all

The War on Women widened significantly today.
Virginia Governor Bob McVaginal Probe has accepted the idea of operating a health insurance exchange under Obamacare, but if he has his way, it may not include insurance plans that cover abortion even if they are private plans.
According to The Virginian-Pilot, Gov. McDonnell is crafting a restrictive abortion coverage ban for the state exchange, but some legislators believe that the wording could be used to go beyond just the exchange, banning coverage in private insurance, too. Sen. John Watkins, R-Powhatan County told The Pilot he was concerned that “an amendment drawn too broadly could restrict abortions in private insurance plans, something that would go ‘way too far.’”
So what is “too far?” NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia notes that Gov. McDonnell’s 2011 plan would not only forbid any private insurer that participated in the state exchange from providing abortion coverage, but it would also forbid women from purchasing separate riders, even with their own personal money.

Wanker of the Day: Joe Scarborough

It is very strange to see Joe Scarborough trying to win an economics argument with Paul Krugman. Krugman doesn’t know politics as well as Scarborough, but he does have a Nobel Prize in economics. He also has a track record. He’s been making predictions in print at least two times a week for years, and you can check his predictions to see how they turned out. On economic matters, he’s been very accurate. He’s certainly been better than average. Meanwhile, the austerity measures that have been pursued with such gusto in Europe offer us a counterexample. Austerity might assure that taxes are low and moneylenders get every possible bit of currency they lend out back with interest, but austerity is bad for economic growth and bad for employment. And low economic growth and high unemployment cause government debt.
People know that you have to spend money to make real money, but they somehow don’t think that applies to the government. At some point, you’d hope people would notice that printing money hasn’t caused inflation and big deficits haven’t driven up interest rates and that the economy performed better during the Stimulus than before or after it.
High unemployment is bad and has huge direct and indirect costs to society and the government. The best thing we could do is to spend a bunch of money to employ people doing whatever. Or, you know, just start handing out wads of cash.
In any case, Scarborough just thinks it’s bad to run a deficit and he can’t imagine why it could possibly be a bad idea to run smaller deficits during a time of slow economic growth and high unemployment. It’s a bad idea because it makes the problem worse. Is this really that hard to accept?

How Long, Oh Lord, How Long?

It is truly amazing that Congress appears to be totally helpless to avoid the sequester. And it really comes down to one thing. The Republicans can’t bring themselves to compromise. It’s basically a refusal to acknowledge the result of the election. The Democrats campaigned on a balanced approach to the budget that acknowledged the Republicans’ fervent ideological desire to shrink the size of government. It’s not like the Democrats, on their own, would do anything like what they are offering the Republicans. Most amazingly, even the Republicans would not insist on such draconian economy-killing cuts if they were in total charge of the government. Yet, in the minority, they insist on budget policies more extreme than they would enact on their own.
The result will be chaos and disruption, a predicted loss of 750,000 jobs, a significant drop in GDP, broken contracts, furloughed workers, food shortages, loss of federal law enforcement power, military unpreparedness, long lines at airports, and more and stupider things as well.
The only way to avoid it all is for the Democrats to cave to every demand.
How much longer must this country endure the GOP?

Image of New Black Barbie Doll Sparks Outrage

An image of a brown Barbie doll has surfaced on the Internet, causing people to question whether or not it is supposed to be the next African-American Barbie. The doll is sporting blonde hair, gold chains, cleavage, and two bags that are strikingly similar to the Louis Vuitton monogram multicolor collection.
Many African-Americans find the doll’s appearance offensive, stating that it does not exude the true beauty of African-American women. The truth is, though, the doll strongly resembles
imagery of African-American women that is seen in some of the most famous celebrities (e.g. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, etc.). The only difference I see between Beyoncé, for example, and the doll is that the doll’s skin color is darker than Beyoncé’s. If we want to change the imagery of the African-American woman, we have to start exalting celebrities and other prominent figures in the black community that represent the imagery that we’d like people around the world to embrace.
We all know that African-American women come in all shapes, colors, and sizes, so it doesn’t mean that the community can not embrace multiple images of beauty in the community. If you believe Beyoncé’s look is a classic image of African-American women, continue to support her and don’t become offended when people around the globe perceive African-American women to look the same way that she does. If you believe India Arie is the perfect example of black beauty, support her as well. As a community, we’ve got to grow out of becoming offended when people of other ethnicities define our appearance and/or actions. They are simply conveying what they believe we support. If we want to change the way we are perceived by other cultures, we have to make the change within ourselves. This is no excuse to defend prejudice and persons who believe that all black men are criminals because they see black men on the news 24/7. There is a clear indication of systemic racism that severely influences the way we’re perceived across the world; however, we must take accountability and refute these negative images by exalting positive images

Can We Trust Reporters With Black Breaking News?

The Root’s contributing editor Demetria L. Lucas reflects in a piece for Clutch magazine on how the real-life drama surrounding the Chris Dorner saga was covered and what was missed.
As commentators and “experts” kept yapping, I wondered if I — you know as a Black member of the general public — was even the intended for the audience for these broadcasts. The experts and the reporters on CNN and MSNBC were talking about how Dorner should surrender so the LAPD would no longer be terrorized, and how sad it was that the LAPD was being targeted and living in fear. And all I could think was, “Well, now they know how Black and Brown people in LA feel!”
Don’t get me wrong, I want Dorner caught, but it’s because he killed that poor girl and her fiance. And because round-faced, caramel-colored Black men (that means you, LL) — and apparently, Hispanic grannys — ain’t safe on the streets until Dorner’s dead. The last thing on my mind was the pain and suffering of the LAPD. I came of age listening to NWA’s “[F–k] da Police” and watching the grainy footage of the Rodney King beating. What the dominant culture calls the LA “riots,” I refer to as an uprising. Frankly, I’m real “meh” on the LAPD and its “chickens coming home to roost” Moment.
And I wish I’d caught the expert’s name on CNN who referred to the part of Dorner’s manifesto when he choked out a fellow white officer who was dropping n-bombs left and right. When confronted by Dorner, the officer told him, “I’ll say it when I want.” Oh, word? The expert said it was evidence of that Dorner was “unstable,” and I thought “oh, he must be talking to the dominant culture” because Black folk might think that’s out of order, but not nowhere does it hold water as evidence of being crazy…

UPDATE: Hayden Man FBI Says Slapped Crying Toddler Aboard Delta Flight Suspended From Work

ATLANTA, GA. — The employer of a 60-year-old Idaho executive says it has suspended the man after authorities charged him with slapping a 2-year-old boy aboard a flight to Atlanta.
The parent company of Unitech Composites and Structures in Hayden confirmed today that its president, Joe Rickey Hundley, was suspended pending the outcome of the criminal investigation, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.
Al Haase, president and CEO of parent company AGC Aerospace and Defense, Composite Group, said in a statement the company is “taking this matter seriously.”
Hundley was charged with simple assault after Jessica Bennett of Minneapolis told authorities he slapped her crying boy in the face and used a racial slur.
Hundley’s attorney, Marcia Shein, said Friday that “it is important to let the case develop.”
Jets Escort Plane Away From No-Fly Zone Where Obama Is Vacationing

STUART, Fla. — Officials say two F-16 military jets have escorted a small plane away from a no-fly zone above where President Barack Obama is vacationing along Florida’s Treasure Coast.
U.S. Army Lt. Col. Mike Humphreys said the planes forced the Cessna 152 to land in Witham Field in Stuart around noon Saturday. Local authorities met the plane when it landed. No other details were released.
Federal Aviation Administration officials said they are investigating whether the Cessna entered the temporarily restricted flight area.
Obama is spending the weekend with some friends at the Floridian, a secluded yacht and golf club.

Forest Whitaker was frisked at a store in NYC Deli Over False Theft Allegation

Not even the inside of a store can provide a Black man–in this case, Forest Whitaker— in New York City refuge from “Stop and Frisk.”
This time, however, the NYPD is not behind the act; it was allegedly an employee of the Upper East Side’s Milano Market who carried out the embarrassing pat down. TMZ reports that Whitaker said he was falsely accused of lifting an item off the store’s shelf and subsequently frisked by an employee. An eyewitness told the entertainment site that the Academy Award winner was frisked in plain view of everyone.
Of course, the shake down produced nothing belonging to the store and Whitaker left the establishment angry and embarrassed.
The actor’s rep told TMZ, “This was an upsetting incident given the fact that Forest did nothing more than walk into the deli. What is most unfortunate about this situation is the inappropriate way store employees are treating patrons of their establishment.
“Frisking individuals without proof/evidence is a violation of rights.”
The rep added, “Forest did not call the authorities at the request of the worker who was in fear of losing his employment. Forest asked that, in the future, the store change their behavior and treat the public in a fair and just manner.”

Tonya Battle is suing her employers at Hurley Medical Center, in Flint, after they ordered her not to look after the baby in the neonatal intensive care unit following a request from its father, WNEM reports.
The lawsuit states: “The father told the [nurse in charge] that he did not want and African Americans taking care of his baby.”
It adds that, during the conversation with Battle’s supervisor, the father rolled up his sleeve to reveal a tattoo of a Swastika.

The hospital needs to be sued up the whazoo. They didn’t stand up to the parents and let them know that the nurse was more than qualified to provide care for that white baby, and that they don not assign nursing staff to a patient based on their SKIN COLOR. PERIOD.
Take that baby somewhere else, like Aryan NATION, but there will be no dumping staff off a case because they’re BLACK.

Can the Republicans Be Saved From Obsolescence?

One afternoon last month, I paid a visit to two young Republicans named Bret Jacobson and Ian Spencer, who work in a small office in Arlington, Va., situated above an antique store and adjacent to a Japanese auto shop. Their five-man company, Red Edge, is a digital-advocacy group for conservative causes, and their days are typically spent designing software applications for groups like the Heritage Foundation, the Republican Governors Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Lately, however, Jacobson and Spencer have taken up evangelizing — and the sermon, delivered day after day to fellow conservatives in the form of a 61-point presentation, is a pitiless we-told-you-so elucidation of the ways in which Democrats have overwhelmed Republicans with their technological superiority.

About an hour into the session, Anderson walked up to a whiteboard and took out a magic marker. “I’m going to write down a word, and you guys free-associate with whatever comes to mind,” she said. The first word she wrote was “Democrat.”
“Young people,” one woman called out.
“Liberal,” another said. Followed by: “Diverse.” “Bill Clinton.”“Change.”“Open-minded.”“Spending.”“Handouts.”“Green.”“More science-based.”

The New Republic Breaks Down How the GOP Doubled-Down on Whiteness
The best retort critics could come up with was “you do it too.”
That was the slam after The New Republic published its piece “Original Sin: Why the GOP is and will continue to be the party of white people.” Conservatives quickly googled Wikipedia, and pointed out how lacking in a tan The New Republic’s staff is, failing to grasp that The New Republic (while could benefit from diversity) is not one of two national political parties that takes turns in writing, executing and judging our laws.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say the GOP might be a bit more important and powerful than a magazine. I can’t think of the last time TNR did something that determined what military contracts we might purchase and how much interest the government will have in my womb year-to-year.
As Dylan Byers writes at Politico: “Should TNR diversify its offices? That’s up to them. But for the GOP, it isn’t a case of should or shouldn’t. It’s a case of must.”
TNR’s piece chronicles in how trying to find a unifying force for the conservative movement conservative thinkers and politicos reached back to the “States Rights” ideology of nullification, which was fueled by the desire to keep slavery legal. The article makes the interesting note that even back then Southern political thinkers knew they were likely to end up on the losing side. This was due to the United States continually adding new territories and the likelihood that these territories would not allow slavery. Thus insuring these would eventually become “free” states, finally creating enough abolitionist legislators to outlaw slavery. Hence, the creation of the politics of nullification that announces “majority be damned.”
Who cares if the other side wants to consider equality for all, slavery’s apologists cried, We’re trying to keep our racially-based caste system going.

(The Smoking Gun) After demanding that the mother of a crying toddler “shut that ni–er baby up,” a male passenger allegedly slapped the 19-month-old across the face as a flight prepared to land in Atlanta last Friday evening, The Smoking Gun has learned.
The shocking February 8 incident aboard Delta Airlines Flight 721 resulted in Joe Rickey Hundley, 60, being charged with simple assault, according to a U.S. District Court affidavit. Hundley is president of an aircraft parts manufacturer headquartered in Hayden, Idaho.
In an interview, Hundley denied striking the toddler or using a racial slur, though he did acknowledge that he “asked the mother to quiet the child.” Hundley, who said he was traveling to Atlanta to visit a hospitalized relative, described himself as “distraught” on the flight, during which he said he consumed a single alcoholic drink.
