I’m a heathen and I admit it. So, I’m thinking if they want to make REAL history at the Academy Awards tonight, they can do so by nominating Quevenzhane Wallis as Best Actress for her role in “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” Not only would she be the fifth African-American given the award, at age nine years old, she would also be the youngest award winner in the history of the Academys.
And she would get it for a quality role – I still haven’t forgiven Halle Berry for that prostituting character she played, blowing that saltine, Billy Bob Thornton, who executed her husband in Monster’s Ball….

I met Jayme and a friend of hers that we’ll call Terry for cocktails one day last week. Jayme has shared many a story about Terry over the years. Terry has been married three times and in between her marriages, she has what she refers to as “sponsors” – yes, you read that right. Terry, a drop dead gorgeous 52 year old woman who looks not a day over thirty refers to her male companions as sponsors.
Welp.
When we met, she laughed and said she was so pleased to meet the other side of the coin. I asked her what she meant. She said that she was Jayme’s over-the-top outrageous not-to-be-redeemed friend and I was the saintly one. Hearing this caused me to choke on my Godiva martini. Never in any of my years of living had I been referred to as saintly. And deservedly not.
I started to protest and she shut me down. She didn’t say it to be mean, she explained. It was just that compared to the life she had chosen and the way she conducted herself, I was a bit of a goody two shoes.
I didn’t like that any better. My problem, she went on to explain, was that I did not believe in maximizing my p**** power. I had to set the martini glass down.
“I didn’t realize I had a problem.”
“Do you work to pay your own bills?”
“Well yes.”
“You’re doing it wrong. A woman who looks like you or even a facsimile of you should never pay her own bills. That is what men are for.”
Mouth dropped open. “Oh.”
“You only sleep with men that you’re in love with or think you might be in love with.”
I scanned my mental “did and done” list to see if she was correct but she interrupted my thinking.
“It’s great to be in love, it really is. But it’s better to love what a man can do for you. All this independent woman stuff is great but it’s easier to be independent with someone else’s money in the bank. As a woman, all you need is for a man to be so into how you make him feel that he’ll give you the world to keep feeling like that. Once he gives you the world, it’s yours. That’s p**** power.”

Quvenzhane Wallis will soon be trading the extreme poverty of the Bathtub for the extravagant wealth of Daddy Warbucks’ mansion as she’s officially signed on to play the title role in the new screen adaptation of “Annie.” The “Beasts of the Southern Wild” star was first rumored for the part earlier this month when Will Smith’s daughter Willow, who had long been attached to the project, officially “aged out” of the role upon turning 12 years old.
The character of Annie, a spunky, savvy yet trouble-prone orphan, first appeared in Harold Gray’s long-running comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” which made its debut on August 5, 1924. The strip took its name from the 1885 poem “Little Orphant Annie” by James Whitcomb Riley and followed the adventures of Annie, her dog Sandy and her benefactor, Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks, which often served as timely commentaries on organized labor, communism and Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal (FDR himself would later appear as a character in the Broadway musical).

Republicans Are Ready to Traumatize Poor Children

People in poverty always dangle from a financial cliff, but this March 1st, Republicans have maneuvered and manipulated the political landscape to set up sequestration, and the people who will be harmed most disastrously will be the poor. If the Democrats and Republicans had been able to reach a reasonable agreement to stave off automatic cuts, over a million jobs would not be predicted to be lost, and millions would not suffer. A snapshot of some of the effects includes:
•Two million people will lose their SNAP (food stamp) benefits and another 44 million will see them cut
•Two hundred thousand children will lose school lunches
•$1.7 billion dollars per year will no longer go to child welfare services that address child abuse prevention
•Over half a million women and children will no longer receive WIC benefits (Women, Infants, Children) which provide milk, eggs, cereal, fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious foods to low-income families. About 1,600 will also be cut as a result
•Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP) is slated for dramatic cuts
•Twenty-five thousand children will no longer receive child care services
•Community health care centers serving the poor will lose $55 million in funding
•Over 7,000 special education teachers will be laid off
•Seventy thousand children will no longer be able to attend Head Start, and 10,000 Head Start teachers will be laid off
•Title I education funds will be cut resulting in the loss of funding for almost 1.2 million disadvantaged students, including another 16,000 teachers and staff laid off
•Rental assistance to 125,000 families in the very deepest poverty levels will be cut putting them at high risk for homelessness
•More than 100,000 formerly homeless people will be basically put back on the streets as the programs that serve them are cut
•People receiving unemployment benefits will see their benefits cut by 9.4% which translates into a loss of more than $400
•Almost 375,000 adults and children with serious mental illnesses will see their services cut
•The Indian Health Service will be able to provide 804,000 fewer outpatient visits and 3,000 fewer inpatient visits, and $130 million more will be cut from Tribal services ranging from social services to public education
•734,000 low-income families will no longer receive assistance with utilities
These are just numbers on a page to Republicans. They have proven time and again their heartlessness. To me, they are a wrenching punch to the gut and a flashback to a scarier time of vulnerability.

House Republicans Are Now Begging Obama to Save Them From Their Sequester

House Republicans are so desperate to avoid being held accountable for their sequester that they are asking President Obama to save them.

Rep. Rogers’ comments did not come out of the blue. The Washington Examiner reported that House Republican leaders are trying to give away their power on the sequester to Obama, “Those conversations are happening and they’re happening at a leadership level. The bill would not try to replace the cuts, [but] it would instead give the president maximum authority to prioritize.”
They are trying this because they want to be able to blame Obama for any of the cuts that he might choose to make. Any defense cuts that the president made would be met with cries from Republicans that Obama doesn’t care about national security. House Republicans know that if the sequester cuts go into effect, they could lose control of the House. This real possibility is why Republican leaders are virtually begging the president to take their power away from them.
It is unlikely that the White House would entertain for a second taking responsibility for the cuts without asking for something big in return. That something would be more revenue. The White House would make it hurt by demanding a lot more revenue than is on the table right now.
Notice that Democratic Rep. Engel mentioned letting the sequester kick in, and then fixing it later. The message in that statement was clear. Democrats aren’t going allow House Republicans to weasel out of their responsibility for the sequester. Contrary to the BS that Bob Woodward is selling, Republicans like Paul Ryan have been pushing for the sequester since 2004.
House Republicans created this mess in 2011. They are now trying to pass the buck to President Obama, so that they can blame him for it later. Their latest move represents the sort of cynical, shallow, superficial tactics that the nation has learned to expect from the House leadership.

What Was Gained By Hagel Opposition?

While it’s still too early for the Obama administration to be doing any end zone celebrations, it looks like Chuck Hagel will be confirmed as Secretary of Defense next week. I wonder what his opponents think they have accomplished?
Who are his opponents, anyway?
Obviously, there are those who don’t want to see Israel criticized ever, even a little, by any government official. But these are really some extreme cases. Within the Jewish community, at least, no one of significance has had much of a problem with Hagel. If he’s good enough for Chuck Schumer and his constituents, he can’t be bad for U.S.-Israel relations.
There are the neo-conservatives like Sens. McCain and Graham, who don’t want anyone who opposes them running the Pentagon.
But the biggest source of opposition comes from Republicans who don’t like turncoats who go from being a colleague one day to a harsh critic the next. I understand. I wouldn’t be too thrilled with Zell Miller running the Pentagon. The difference is that Zell Miller is one Mint Julip away from a murder-suicide incident. He’s unstable.
But what was gained by all these attacks? Did they make it less likely that ambitious people will question Israel’s settler policy in the future? I honestly don’t know the answer to that question. They may have proven that such criticism is more acceptable than previously thought.
Did they make neo-conservatism more popular? I’d argue that they merely made it more urgent for Hagel to purge those types of people from the Pentagon.
Did they make it less likely that future Republicans would defect from the party? In the foreign policy/national security realm, I’d argue the opposite. They drove respectable people out of the Republican Party with their treatment of Hagel. Couple it with Dick Lugar’s primary defeat, and I’d say that they GOP no longer has any realist establishment at all. Obama has brought them over.
Maybe Hagel will be somewhat weakened in the Pentagon, but I just don’t see how that can balance out in the favor of the people who made a giant stink about his nomination.
Filibustering him also created a nasty precedent that could easily come back to bite his opponents. We didn’t have to let John Ashcroft become Attorney General, after all. He didn’t have 60 supporters in the Senate.
It’s not just that Hagel’s opposition has been reprehensible in their behavior and rhetoric; it’s that they don’t seem to have accomplished anything with their antics. They weakened themselves. They made themselves look like half-beserk losers

A homeless man in Kansas City, Missouri is facing a windfall of more than $100,000 for his kindness after he returned a diamond engagement ring to its rightful owner, which she had accidentally dropped into his donation cup.
Billy Ray Harris, who is homeless and often sleeps under a bridge, was shocked to find that a diamond ring had been dropped in his collection cup while begging last Friday.
The ring was so big I knew if it was real it had to be expensive,’ he told KCTV. Rather than pawn it, Harris had a hunch that the owner would return for it and so he stored it in a safe place.
The ring belonged to Sarah Darling, who was devastated the next day when she realized she had lost it.
‘It was horrible. It was such a feeling of loss,’ said Darling. ‘It meant so much to me beyond just the financial value.’
Darling rarely takes the ring off, but that day had put it in her purse for safe keeping after she had developed a slight rash on her finger.
She went back to look for Harris on the Saturday, but couldn’t find him. She tried again the next day and fortunately he was in the same spot.
‘I asked him … “I don’t know if you remember me, but I think I gave you something that’s very precious to me,” and he says, “Was it a ring? Yeah, I have it, I kept it for you,'” said Darling.
She described finding the ring again as a miracle.

Fair play, a derivative of honesty and once a companion of common sense and common decency, is so lost in mainstream American news media that it may never resurface until it appears in an obituary.
Imagine if our previous president, George W. Bush, made the political and social scene with this fellow, a wealthy campaign contributor and inaugural VIP guest:
An ex-con entertainer who wrote and performed songs loaded with hate for gays, women and black men, while boasting of his allegiance to illegally owning and discharging assault rifles and automatic handguns as tools of lawlessness and murder.
It wouldn’t have happened because it couldn’t have happened! The media would have forced Bush to denounce that friendship and renounce his own rotten judgment. Calls for his impeachment or resignation would be immediate.
And the news media, to this noble end, would have done their job.
Yet, this same presidential buddy exists in and around the Obama White House in the form of rapper Jay-Z. The media, however, won’t touch it. This president has never been asked to explain his predilection for such an entertainer.

The Republicans’ latest stratagem is to argue that the cuts in discretionary spending that will kick-in when the Sequester hits us next Friday will be insignificant and cause no noticeable damage to anyone. I suppose this represents a little momentum for intellectual consistency from people who have been telling us for years that Keynesian Economics don’t work and that the government is spending too much money on social programs. If government spending can’t create jobs then slashing spending can’t destroy them. And if we are wasting money on social programs then people don’t actually need those programs. Of course, both arguments are the stupidest nonsense.
The advantage we have in this argument is that it will not be resolved by the relative success of both parties’ talking points and spin, but by the response of the American people. It is assumed in Republican circles that their politicians are in safe seats and that they can easily absorb a big dip in their popularity and come out unscathed. They ought to remember that scene from the second presidential debate when the president told Mitt Romney to “please proceed” with his erroneous argument about the administration’s response to the Benghazi attacks. If the president isn’t slamming his fist on the table to get them to avoid the Sequester, perhaps he knows something that they don’t. Sure, he would like the Republicans to strike a reasonable deal to avoid the Sequester, but he has no worries about who will suffer politically if they do not.
This has led some in the press to blame the president for not showing more urgency even as they argue in the next breath that the House won’t accede to anything the president suggests. But you can’t have it both ways, and “urgency” is relative anyway. The president has made the same case for three years. He will agree to large cuts in return for modest revenues. He will give a lot to get a little. The Republicans, in turn, have maintained for three years that they will give absolutely nothing and that all their demands must be met or the economy gets it in the head.
That some of them are now arguing that the bullet wound to the cerebellum won’t actually hurt or cause any lasting damage is kind of a joke
