Who would think we’d be having to say these words; an anniversary of a teenager, who was starked and shot like an animal by racist vigilante, George Zimmerman.
But here we are one year later bearing witness to a justice system full of holes, (PUN intended) one that continues to hunt down black boys and men and attempt to try them by a different set of rules and laws.
We honor the life of Trayvon Martin and his family. It’s been heart-rending and amazing to watch Trayvon’s mom Sybrina grieve and fight for justice with a passion and grace in the murder of her son.

In short, “we” know a hell of a lot more than you seem to as reflected in your piece.
These “the truth is somewhere in the middle” pieces are so devoid of thoughtfulness and actual understanding of the facts that have been released in the wake of the tragedy, all I can say is that your piece was LAZY and intellectually incurious.
What we now know about you as a writer….
1) You don’t know the difference between race and ethnicity.
Zimmerman IS white, being ½ Hispanic doesn’t change that, & even if it did, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be racist against blacks.
2) You’re ignorant about how racism manifests itself
Serino asking “You got any problems with black people?” does not mean the SPD adequately considered racial motivation.
3) This case DOES fit many of the molds of a racially motivated crime. Unfortunately someone like Zimmerman is not unique and neither is the victimology of Trayvon.
Zimmerman’s behavior was SOOoo prosaic anyone should’ve been able to see this coming. The truth is, someone devoid of racist thoughts, wouldn’t have seen Trayvon as being suspicious. Not to the degree where they’d feel justified calling the police and stalking and pursuing another human being in the menacing manner and to the degree Zimmerman did Trayvon. It was Zimmerman’s surety of Trayvon’s “type” that gave him the hubris to behave so aggressively It doesn’t take a social genius to see what was at play there. And writers like you have a duty not to be so obtuse about it.
Facts released have shown that Zimmerman has had issues with racism in his past. It may be difficult to prove racism that reaches a level of being prosecutable, but that does not mean that his racism is no longer self-evident when examining what led to the tragedy on 2/26/2012

The United States of America on behalf of the FBI has filed an OBJECTION order issued by Judge Nelson in regards to Mark O’Mara and his client trying to obtain Specific Discovery.
In other words, NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!! says the FBI.

The ineptitude of Mark O’Mara is truly amazing. The words fail me as to describe the shenanigans he is trying to perform. On February 5th 2013 Judge Nelson granted the motion for demand for Specific Discovery from the FBI/DOJ.

The FBI filed their response on February 25th 2013 to the order issued by Judge Nelson. In their response they’ve noted, information was requested in October of 2012. O’mara failed to serve the appropriate party, the FBI. I would think that would be Law 101, serve the appropriate person, but hey I am not a lawyer.
The FBI told the defense they are bound by the federal regulations and therefore will not produce documents until Defense council has met Federal Regulations and gets authorization from the Department of Justice. In other words, fill out and file some paperwork. I would think that would be Law 101, file some paperwork, but hey I am not a lawyer. Just to show how fair the FBI is, they have contacted the Duhfense to assist in obtaining the proper paperwork to expedite the process.

This was no Shooting, this was Murder! We have several different stories from Zimmerman claiming what happened that night, non of which add up, and even a lame offering from him on the Hannity show, that is was “Gods Plan?”
I came to my own conclusions, after seeing first hand, his lack of injuries, where Trayvon’s body was found laying, phone records, interviews. and Zimmerman’s own twisted stories and anger projection while on the phone with NEN.
IMO…….this is what happened:
My tears still flow, I wonder why,
it had to be, that I should die?
He followed me, I ran away,
What did I do? What did I say?
Who was this man, where did he go,
I turned around, then I would know!
He stood there, looked me in the eyes,
his anger raged, to my demise.
I asked him “what his problem was?’
he didn’t like me, “Just Because!”
My hood was up, my skin was brown,
next thing I knew, I’m on the ground.
I cried, I screamed, he pulled a gun,
I knew right then, my time was done.
I begged him stop, please let me live,
but that’s one wish he did not give.
I heard the blast, I felt the pain,
and as I died, I felt the rain.
What did I do? What did I say?
Oh Zimmerman….You’re going to pay!

The U.S. Department of Justice filed paperwork Monday, arguing that federal regulations trump a state court judge’s ruling. It’s asking that judge, Debra S. Nelson, to undo her Feb. 5 order.
“This court has ‘no power or authority’ … to compel the FBI to produce the documents at issue here,” wrote Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean P. Flynn.

The father of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager shot to death in Florida last year, said Tuesday that the family will “never move on” and will fight to make sure his memory “won’t be tainted by this whole situation.”
On the anniversary of his son’s killing, Tracy Martin also said that lawmakers across the country must take a hard look at gun laws and who should get gun permits. He cited not just his son’s death but the elementary-school massacre in Newtown, Conn.
“Why would you need a semiautomatic weapon to be hunting? That’s senseless,” Tracy Martin said on MSNBC.
George Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, is charged with second-degree murder in Martin’s death. Zimmerman, who is of white and Hispanic descent, has pleaded not guilty and says he shot Martin in self-defense after Martin attacked him.
The case ignited a debate over race and gun rights in the weeks after the shooting. It became a rallying point for activists protesting what they said was the targeting of an unarmed black youth because of his race.
Zimmerman’s trial is scheduled to begin June 10.
Martin’s parents were holding a candlelight vigil in New York on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of his death as part of what they call a “Million Hoodie March.” Martin was wearing a hoodie the night he was killed.
The vigil started 6 p.m. in Union Square in Manhattan. An online flier for the event organized by the Trayvon Martin Foundation said there would be a moment of silence for Martin and “and all victims of senseless gun violence.” Other remembrances are planned across the country.

Massive Crowd At Rally For Trayvon Martin (Sanford, FL)

It’s been 365 days since George Zimmerman, the self-appointed sentry of his Sanford, Fla., gated community, tailed and then fatally shot Trayvon Martin, a black 17-year-old carrying little more than a cell phone, a bottle of iced tea and a pack of Skittles.
The white 28-year-old of Peruvian descent had a long history of calling 911 to report the mundane (elementary schoolers playing in the street) and the racially charged (black males he suspected of burglary based on their appearance). And shortly before he confronted, fought with, and shot Trayvon to death, Zimmerman ignored a police dispatcher’s advice to stop following the teen in the gray hoodie. Yet Sanford police didn’t charge him with a crime, citing Florida’s 2005 “stand your ground” law.
In the immediate aftermath of their youngest son’s death, Trayvon’s dad, Tracy, and his mom, Sybrina Fulton, demanded that Sanford police arrest Zimmerman. The divorced couple went on to hold press conferences, do national interviews, attend rallies, and push petitions for state and federal intervention. Local authorities finally charged Zimmerman with second degree murder on April 11.
Without the support of loved ones, co-workers and strangers, it’s unlikely that Trayvon’s parents would have had the time and resources to draw national attention to their son’s case, so-called stand your ground laws and racial profiling in general. Here, a dozen ways folks from all over the country came together to support Trayvon’s family:
Sybrina’s colleagues gave her $40,825 worth of their vacation time. Nearly 200 Miami-Dade County employees contributed their vacation days so that Sybrina, a 23-year veteran of the housing authority, could take eight months of paid leave to mourn and campaign for justice. Another 70 people donated off-days to Knight Evans, Trayvon’s aunt.
The public helped Tracy and Sybrina secure seasoned legal counsel. Through small donations to online fundraising sites such as WePay.com, the family raised about $100,000 and hired Tallahassee-based civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump. Crump has served as a public spokesman and strategist throughout the case.
Trayvon’s schoolmates organized walkouts; others did the same. Students at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School staged a number of walkouts, eventually inspiring neighboring Miami-Dade and Broward County school kids to demonstrate on the one-month anniversary of Trayvon’s death.

Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the teenager’s parents, and their lawyers will be hosting a Million Hoodies Candlelight Vigil in New York’s Union Square.
They are asking supporters to join them “for a moment of silence in honor of Trayvon Martin and all victims of senseless gun violence.”

Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, passed in 2005, allows people to use lethal force in self-defense if they are in fear of serious bodily harm. More than 20 states have since passed similar laws.
“This is the first time in about five years that there has been no new Stand Your Ground laws enacted in any other states in America,” Crump told CNN Tuesday.
“So I say that is a plus for the advocacy for Trayvon Martin,” Crump said. “This time last year nobody knew about this little-known law called Stand Your Ground but now everybody knows about it.”
Crump called it “asinine that you can … shoot and kill an unarmed kid and say Stand Your Ground, and go home and sleep in your bed at night.”
Police cited that law in initially refusing to arrest Zimmerman, which sparked celebrity protests and popular demonstrations across the country, turning the case into international story.
