One year has passed since the murder of unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin gripped headlines, continuing the nation’s tumultuous legacy with racial profiling, that significantly targets men of color.
The conversation picked up in New York City with a Star Jones hosted sit down with Sybrina Fulton, Martin’s mother during the opening panel of ‘Black Male: Re-Imagined II,’ a two day summit that aims to analyze the perception of Black men in the media (news and reality television) and public policy.
A month after what would have been Trayvon’s 18th birthday, Fulton candidly spoke about the the circumstances surrounding the death of her son and the role that perception played in the public analysis and national conversation. She also shared how the recently formed Justice for Trayvon Martin Foundation and its partners will fight for a reduction of racial profiling.
Other notables at the event included Michael Skolnik, Editor and Chief of GlobalGrind.com; Civil Rights Attorney, Benjamin Crump, and spoken word artist, Jasiri X.

George Zimmerman: New photos of Trayvon Martin’s cell phone

George Zimmerman’s defense team has released new documents and evidence, including photos of Trayvon Martin’s cell phone.
The evidence was part of the state’s 12th supplemental discovery release to the defense.
Zimmerman’s lawyers said the discovery also included a data file from Trayvon’s phone, but added: “We believe [it] is not part of the public record, and therefore will not be provided here.”
Investigators said Trayvon Martin was on his cell phone with a girlfriend, currently known only as “Witness 8,” shortly before the confrontation with Zimmerman, who shot and killed the teen Feb. 26, 2012.
Trayvon was unarmed, but Zimmerman claimed he shot him in self-defense after the teen attacked him.
The newly released photos of the phone show it was a black T-mobile Android phone. Part of the phone appears to contain the remains of sticker shaped like a heart.

SANFORD — When Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old, was shot dead by George Zimmerman, a suspicious Neighborhood Watch volunteer, the reaction was swift and loud.
Thousands descended for protest rallies, becoming people who needed to be accommodated and protected and heard.
Sanford’s police chief stepped aside temporarily, then was fired, creating a job that had to be filled.
News crews flooded into town, demanding answers and a mountain of police and city records.
For the city and its employees, it was a logistical nightmare.

Jose Baez should not comment about Zimmerman case

I do not believe it is appropriate for Jose Baez to comment publicly on the Zimmerman case for Channel 6 or any other form of media.
Since Baez represents Chris Serino, who was in charge of the investigation of Trayvon Martin’s death, he has a duty to vigorously represent Serino’s best interests at all times, even after he no longer actively represents him.
Baez also has a duty to maintain client confidentiality which precludes him from sharing inside information that he obtained from Serino.
I do not see any way that Baez can honestly and reasonable comply with his duties to his client while commenting as an independent expert regarding the investigation and the defendant’s likely guilt or innocence.
Why don’t Jose Baez go sit his ass down someplace? Just shut up, Jose Baez!
Jose Baez: Evidence ‘so weak’ in George Zimmerman case
Jose Baez turned analyst on the George Zimmerman case and gave viewers of preview of what they might see in coming months.
“I have never seen a high-profile case that is so weak as the Zimmerman case,” Baez told Lauren Rowe on WKMG-Channel 6’s “Flashpoint.” The program aired Sunday morning.
Baez said he based his view on the evidence and not on his representing Chris Serino, the lead Sanford police investigator in the case. “I just think looking at the overall case, it’s extremely weak,” Baez said. “I had that opinion from very early on in the case.”

Call for repeal of ‘Stand Your Ground’ law

One year ago on Feb. 26, a “neighborhood watch volunteer” shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin to death in Sanford, Fla. A year later, Florida State University students rallied in honor of Trayvon Martin and called for a repeal of the Stand Your Ground law, which allows people to use deadly force if they feel a serious threat.
George Zimmerman, who is charged with the death of Martin, is waiting for a hearing on whether he can avoid prosecution under the Stand Your Ground law.
Students at the rally wore hoodies in honor of Trayvon Martin, and they held signs such as, “Repeal Stand Your Ground” and “We have nothing to lose but our chains.”
The group Dream Defenders organized the rally. The ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) has coordinated on events with this coalition for several years.
Spokesperson Michael Sampson said they would work to eliminate the Stand Your Ground law. “Stand Your Ground gives people a reason to kill Black and Brown youth and that’s something we can’t have as a country and as a state, so Stand Your Ground should be repealed,” he said.

Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, parents of Trayvon Martin, were special guests at a service held at Overcoming Believers Church in Knoxville.
“Kingdom United: THE GATHERING” is a program the church organized to inspire hope and begin dialogue between community leaders and people from all walks of life, as well as to honor those who have paved the way for community growth and empowerment. Speakers included Minister Chrystal Armstrong, Dr. Pete Sulack, and Hallerin Hilton Hill. Also, Dr. Harold Middlebrook was given the Trailblazer Award.
The special program was already planned; however, attendee Darryl Richmond said the presence of Martin and Fulton took the service to another level. Richmond said, “I took away from it that there’s something I need to be doing to bring justice to America, starting with the community first.”
Trayvon Martin’s parents said it’s been a struggle for them since their son was killed on the night of February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida, but the couple has been traveling to cities across the country hoping to help curb violence in communities.
Fulton, the 17 year old’s mother, said, “If we were not doing anything positive to try and help somebody else I think we would be doing damage to ourselves.”
Overcoming Believers Church Pastor Daryl Arnold said there have been too many killings of young people in the city. Pastor Arnold said, “I don’t want to preach here on Sundays and then have to bury someone on Mondays.”

Sybrina and Tracy is so full of grace & dignity. After reading what happened to Trayvon I became enraged and after 44 days with no arrest, my anger had reached a fever pitch. People across the country became outraged this murderer was walking around free. We had enough of the injustice. Day after day protests were breaking out across the country. The Sanford Police was NOT going to get away with covering up the cold bloodied murder of this innocent child. They messed over the wrong kid this time. We will stand together with the Martins until justice is served.
