“Newtown” is now synonymous with unimaginable tragedy. But many of the families who suffered through it call it something else,”12/14,” the December day that they lost a son, daughter, or wife when a dark young man with dark dreams awoke,
murdered his mother and drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Nearly four months later, just last week, Connecticut passed a gun control law that expands background checks and limits ammunition magazines to 10 rounds. Tomorrow, these families will push for the same in Washington. They believe that their only chance is to keep the resonance of that date ringing. Something else we noticed about “12/14,” add them together, and you get 26, the number of lives lost at Sandy Hook.
At the Newtown town hall we met seven families. They’re part of a group called Sandy Hook Promise which works for change and remembrance.

Gov. Dan Malloy, D-Conn., whose state was wracked by tragedy in December when a gunman killed 20 small children and six faculty members at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., slammed the National Rifle Association Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” saying NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre “reminds me of the clowns at the circus – they get the most attention.”
“This guy is so out of whack, it’s unbelievable,” Malloy said, saying the NRA simply will not compromise “on anything to do with guns.”
Instead, Malloy said, the NRA is protecting “the ability of the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible – even if they’re deranged, mentally ill, a criminal background, they don’t care. They want to sell guns.”

(CNN) — A Connecticut store that sold a gun used to kill 26 people last December at Sandy Hook Elementary School no longer can legally sell firearms.
Debora Seifert, a spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told CNN on Friday the Riverview Gun Sales shop in East Windsor, Connecticut, lost its federal firearms license December 20 — six days after the massacre about 65 miles southwest in Newtown.
That day, after killing his mother in their Newtown home, Adam Lanza drove to the elementary school and shot dead 20 young children and six adults using a semiautomatic Bushmaster .223-caliber model XM15 rifle.
The shooter’s mother, Nancy Lanza, bought the Bushmaster firearm two years ago at Riverview Gun Sales, according to Detective Matthew Carl of the East Windsor Police Department.
The ATF spokeswoman did not comment on why the store’s license was revoked, including if it had anything to do with the Newtown rampage.
But Carl said “probably the reason the ATF raided the store on December 20 was for poor keeping of the records.”
