You know, when there are calamities that befall our country like what happened on Monday at the Boston Marathon, there seems to be a knee-jerk belief among many that the terrorists must be from abroad and that anyone fitting the description needs a beat-down. Hey, this is not to suggest that the fear is unwarranted, especially when we have precedents with 9/11 and the earlier attack on the Twin Towers in the Nineties.
But it seems to me, especially from our news media and from the consciousness-impaired that all of these attacks must emanate from people of color, namely people from the Middle East, a considered trouble zone. Not necessarily, because we also have homegrown, right-wing, light-skinned to white people who practice bomb-making and are stockpiling weapons, and have some serious “issues” with the United States as if they were about to go to war at any moment. This reality seems to be lost on those whites for whom darkness and blackness are consonant with evil. They even justify the stockpiling and the bomb-making as defending themselves and others of like mind.
Lately, the specter of the dark-skinned terrorist flared up this week when so-called newsmen like CNN’s John King suggested from his “sources” that this is what Homeland Security was looking for—dark-skinned suspects. Now, “dark-skinned” could include a wide spectrum of people, from African Americans to Latinos as well as Muslims from the Middle East. Frankly, though, a brother wearing a kufi could be a target, even if he isn’t a Muslim, but just a right-thinking black nationalist or even a jazz musician who has consciousness. Naturally, at this pronouncement, all common sense and calm began to leave some citizens with them targeting the closest dark-skinned innocent people that they could find to vent their rage and racism. I can only imagine the panic breaking news reporters felt when they heard on Friday morning that the Boston bombing suspects were from Chechnya — a country they obviously know nothing about based on the crap that was coming out of their mouths.
So what’s a reporter stuck on TV for 24 hours to do? Apparently attempt to become a Chechnya expert, live on air.
Now, I see the merit of explaining the basic facts about the country — where it is, its history, etc. — because many have never heard of it. But to frame it as this ‘other,’ strange country that may have played a key role in influencing the suspects is racist and dangerous, especially when no one was wondering at all how the United States may have influenced them.
Tuning into both CNN and MSNBC’s breaking news, I honestly couldn’t even keep up with the crazy ways they were framing the story. Reporters said that the United States doesn’t have “beef” with Chechnya, so it was odd that they would just “come over here and kill Americans (though the suspects have lived here for 11 years). Then they would link Chechnya with “radicalism,” “al-Qaeda,” “jihad” and made references to 9/11. After the media’s past few days of racist speculation (i.e. the “Saudi National,” the “Bag Men,” and the “dark-skinned male”), you would think the media would stop trying to push this story in a xenophobic direction.
Why won’t they stop?
Perhaps MSNBC Chris Matthews explained it best when he said on Friday that they keep pushing for a connection because if they don’t find one between the suspects and religion or ideology, then “we’re left with nothing here.”

Jake Tapper had been up all night covering the manhunt in Boston for CNN, so maybe that explains why he seemed to rush to judgment when he said of the bombing suspects: “It certainly seems these two are Islamic terrorists.”
“Yes, but those are two separate words,” Juliette Kayyem, a CNN contributor and former homeland security official, reminded Tapper. Technically, literally, he’s not inaccurate: The two brothers, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who died in a shootout with police last night, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, who is apparently cornered by police as I post this, are Muslim and allegedly are terrorists. But all morning long, Kayyem had been cautioning viewers and fellow journalists not to jump to conclusions (as CNN’s John King so infamously did two days ago when he wrongly reported that a “dark-skinned male” had been arrested in connection with the bombing.) “The fact that they’re from Chechnya,” Kayyem said, “is not a motivation.”
The big question, of course, is what was the motivation. But even before the FBI made the Tsarnaevs’ photos public yesterday, and well before we knew their names or background (they’re from a region in Russia next to Chechnya, actually, and have lived in Boston about 10 years), we all have been trying to answer why by placing the two men somewhere on a racial, ethnic, religious, and ideological spectrum.
Media coverage is fraught with that tension: Were they “self-radicalized” and acting on their own or were they part of a larger network? Were they praying to Allah or praising Jesus? Was their nefariousness domestic- or international-based? (The word international keeps popping up superfluously: Fox & Friends’ Gretchen Carlson remarked that “they saw their photos on international television.” Well, unless they were watching CNN International, they saw themselves on good ol’ American TV, like Fox News.)
In other words, were they the kind of white Christian Americans that society has a hard time calling terrorists, or were they the kind of foreign-looking, “dark-skinned” suspects that we have a hard time not calling terrorists?

Just talked with a lawyer friend this morning who concentrates in employment discrimination cases. When you hear a White lawyer say that Blacks and women have to be 3 times as intelligent; have better G.P.A.s than Whites to get an entry level job, then you know — well — you know. We know.
What bothers me are the so-called prisoner statistics. They present that there are more Black men in prison than Whites. What they do not present is that, for example, there may be 500 Black men in prison convicted of murder, one victim each. Yet, there may be 300 White men in prison convicted of murder, but there were 1,000 victims. The same goes for bank robbery and grand theft auto. The number of crimes committed is not considered — just their race.
