Reuters – The Ohio attorney general said on Friday that DNA tests showed Cleveland kidnapping and rape suspect Ariel Castro is the father of the six-year-old born while he allegedly held the girl’s mother and two other women captive for nearly a decade.
Attorney General Mike DeWine said in a statement that “forensic scientists worked throughout the night to confirm that Castro is the father of the six-year-old girl born in captivity to one of the kidnapping victims.”
He added that the tests also found Castro’s DNA did not match any other Ohio cases, although the FBI is still checking the sample against national cases.
Cleveland victims say thanks, ask for privacy
Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight will not speak with media representatives during the criminal investigation and prosecution of their accused captor, Ariel Castro, according to Jim Wooley, a partner at the Jones Day law firm in Cleveland.
Wooley read brief statements from the three women:
“Thank you so much for everything you’re doing and continue to do. I am so happy to be home with my family,” read Berry’s statement.
“I’m so happy to be home and want to thank everybody for all your prayers. I just want time now to be with my family,” read DeJesus’ statement.
“Thank you to everyone for your support and good wishes. I am healthy, happy and safe and will reach out to family, friends and supporters in good time,” Knight’s statement read.
Cleveland victims in contact since rescue
Two of the three women held captive in a Cleveland home for a decade have been in contact since their rescue, NBC News has learned.
Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, who police say spent nine years together in captivity before the were freed Monday, have spoken since Knight was released from the hospital yesterday.
Knight, DeJesus and Amanda Berry, along with a 6-year-old daughter whom Berry bore in captivity, were discovered Monday night after Berry drew the attention of a neighbor. Ariel Castro has been charged with kidnapping all three women and is being held on $8 million bond.
Of the three, Knight was reported missing first, in August 2002. Berry disappeared in 2003 and DeJesus in 2004. Berry and DeJesus went home from the hospital Wednesday; Knight was hospitalized to receive mental health treatment, her mother said.
Knight, now 32, told investigators that Castro impregnated her at least five times, and starved her and punched her in the stomach until she miscarried, according to a Cleveland police report.

One of the women who spent a decade in captivity may need reconstructive surgery for injuries suffered at the hands of her accused attacker, CBS Cleveland affiliate WOIO-TV reports.
Michelle Knight’s grandmother, Deborah Knight, confirmed the information, telling WOIO-TV Thursday: “When she was severely beaten, he had beat her so bad in the face, she has to have facial reconstruction, and she’s lost hearing in one ear.”
On Friday, WOIO-TV reports that Knight was released from MetroHealth Medical Center, according to the hospital.
In a statement posted to the hospital’s Facebook and Twitter accounts Friday, the hospital said Knight was “in good spirits and would like the community to know that she is extremely grateful for the outpouring of flowers and gifts.”

Cleveland kidnap victim Michelle Knight, who may have had the most harrowing ordeal in Ariel Castro’s house, slipped away today from the hospital where she has been staying since being freed from a decade of captivity, leaving her family confused and angry.
A spokeswoman for MetroHealth Hospital confirmed that Knight left the facility, but would not say where she went.
“Michelle Knight has been discharged from MetroHealth. She is asking for her privacy at this time,” the hospital said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, the hospital issued a statement on Knight’s behalf saying she was in “good spirits” and “extremely grateful for the outpouring of flowers and gifts.”
“She asks that everyone please continue to respect her privacy at this time,” the statement said. The hospital also said at the time that Knight had instructed the hospital that she did not want any visitors.
That appears to have extended to her family, who Knight hasn’t seen for 10 years.
Jay Milano is a lawyer hired by Knight’s mother, Barbara Knight. “She went to the hospital and tried to deliver flowers to her daughter and was told that her daughter’s not keeping visitors,” the lawyer said.
