Grandmaster Slice (born 1967) is an American hip-hop musician whose album Electric Slide (Shall We Dance) helped popularize the electric slide dance.[1][2]
Slice was born in South Boston, Virginia and attended Halifax County High School. Slide’s collaboration with Scratchmaster Chuck T. (Charles Fulp) included the underground rap hit “Thinking of You,” which led to Slice’s being signed by Jive Records. Their album The Electric Slide (Shall We Dance) came out in 1991.

Hundreds of U.S. Secret Service agents will be dispatched to secure facilities in Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. A Navy aircraft carrier or amphibious ship, with a fully staffed medical trauma center, will be stationed offshore in case of an emergency.
Former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also made trips to multiple African nations involving similarly laborious preparations. Bush went in 2003 and 2008, bringing his wife on both occasions. Bush’s two daughters went along on the earlier trip, which included a safari at a game preserve on the Botswana-South Africa border.

Multiple people have been shot at a St. Louis, Missouri, business, CNN affiliate KTVI reports, citing police. The conditions of those shot were not immediately known.

At least four people are dead after multiple victims were shot at a business in St. Louis, Missouri Thursday afternoon, local television station KTVI News reports.
KTVI reported at around 1:45 pm local time Thursday that shots were fired on the 2700 block of Cherokee Street, just blocks away from the banks of the Mississippi River.
Around one hour later, KTVI was reporting that two men and two women were shot dead, with emergency personnel treating several other victims on the scene. KTVI’s Jeff Rainford reports that a gun was recovered by police and authorities are not engaged in a manhunt.
The incident occurred inside of Cherokee Place Business Incubator, one block from the Casa Loma Ballroom. Matt Fitzpatrick, a resident of St. Louis, was down the street at the time of the shooting and tweeted, “Really great innovators, companies,and the like off Cherokee street, helping build this city. And then this happens.”

Calling Darrell Issa’s bluff

Darrell Issa’s bluff on the IRS investigation is being called in a big way by top Democrats on Issa’s House Oversight Committee. In a letter sent today to Issa, they are demanding he explain in more detail why he continues to refuse to release full transcripts of witness testimony on the IRS scandal — and they are giving him until Monday to do so.
As you know, Democrats have been pressing Issa — the House GOP’s leading investigations ringleader — to release full transcripts of testimony given to the Committee, which Issa chairs, in the course of its investigation into the IRS scandal. Issa has released selected snippets of that testimony, and has suggested — without substantiation — that the White House directed the IRS targeting of conservative groups.
Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking Oversight Committee Dem, says the full transcript of testimony will show the charges to be false, and will reveal Issa’s selective leaking for what it is. In particular, Cummings wants the full transcript released of testimony by the IRS Screening Group Manager in Cincinnati, a conservative Republican. Cummings says his testimony will show that there is no evidence of White House involvement in the development of the screening of Tea Party cases — and that the process by which these cases got referred to Washington officials falls far short of the conspiracy alleged by conservatives.
Issa has since replied that releasing the full transcripts — as opposed to selected snippets of it — would be “reckless” and “irresponsible,” because it would “serve as a roadmap of the Committee’s investigation” in a way that could discourage future witnesses.
Now Dems on the Oversight Committee are calling Issa’s bluff. In a letter that was sent to Issa today, Cummings asks Issa to specify precisely how releasing full transcripts would harm the investigation, and even agrees to conceal any parts of them that would, according to Issa, do that.
Cummings asks for a reply by Monday, which strongly suggests he will release the full transcripts himself if Issa doesn’t respond. From the letter:

Bill Clinton is correct when he says that you can’t let opinion polls be your guide to foreign policy. But when he compares the situation in Syria to the situation he faced in Kosovo, he’s making one of the stupidest statements that I have ever heard from him.
First of all, the idea that the United States can “cause” a calamity in Syria is ridiculous. It is already a calamity, and it’s not because of our inaction. And the idea that all we need to do to fix the calamity and solve the refugee problem is to “drop a few bombs” is beyond idiotic.
For Clinton to appear with John McCain and make comments like this is a perfect vindication of my total opposition to his wife’s candidacy for president. We cannot afford more leadership from people who think about American power in this way. Obama has already overruled the advice of Hillary Clinton, the Joints Chiefs of Staff, then Director of the CIA David Petraeus, and then Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and kept us out of the conflict in Syria. Now he has the former president intimating that he’s a wuss and a fool.
This is what we gained when we won the presidency for Obama. A cool head.

If immigration reform dies, Latinos will likely blame GOP bigotry

The Senate has voted to officially move to debate on immigration reform, but that’s no guarantee of success. There’s still a real chance the bill will die in the Upper Chamber, and that’s before it would go before the House of Representatives and a Republican caucus that’s deeply hostile to either reform, President Obama, or both.
If right-wing Republicans were to kill comprehensive immigration reform, that would make it the second time in six years they have successfully done so. Democrats argue that this would be a disaster for the GOP. This morning, The Hill quotes several who say as much.
“I don’t anticipate that they’re going to block immigration reform. Let’s hope that they don’t,” declared Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado, a state where Latino population growth has exploded, giving Democrats a decisive advantage in statewide elections. A Democratic strategist warns: “Voting against this bill is a disaster for the Republican Party…They need to be reminded there are sound policy reasons to vote for it but also significant political reasons as well.”
This sounds like false concern, and to a certain extent, it is. Democrats would be happy to watch the Republican Party oppose immigration reform, giving them a campaign issue for next year’s midterm elections. It’s hard to argue that Republicans won’t suffer a short-term cost for opposing immigration reform, arguments from some House Republicans notwithstanding.

What a coup China has accomplished in providing Snowden with refuge in Hong Kong from American prosecution; if Snowden actually knows as much as he says he knows about the NSA, what a windfall of inside information he can provide China. Portraying himself as a whistleblower against government wrongdoing is a ruse to cover up the defection of Snowden to China and the disclosure of foreign surveillance and inner operations of NSA to China. The misguided American outrage will destroy the work of the NSA monitoring the internet, and China will be able to prevent any counter-cyber espionage because too many Americans will have been duped by a slick trick and will destroy their own cyber defense in the name of privacy.
Progressive anti-government paranoia over NSA is getting as bad as Tea Party paranoia. As I understand, phone companies do not keep call records for more than 30 days, and so NSA is banking these numbers for future research on potential links when alerted by a foreign intelligence service about a terrorism suspect. Data mining is not fishing, but connecting the dots to identify terrorism networks – thanks Snowden for shafting America. Progressives need to find out the facts before jumping on the anti-government Tea Party bandwagon.
Privacy is not anonymity, but we have come to believe that, as a people, we have no social responsibilities and are self-made sovereign persons – ignoring that we have been cared for by our families, embrace socialization in religious institutions, get fired if we are uncooperative in our jobs, and reveal all of our personal information to borrow money from a bank. Every time a crime is committed in a public venue, the mantra always is why did we not see it coming. Privacy never protected you from a crook, a terrorist, a gun-nut gone awry, or anyone else who wants to peek into your private life you so expose on FaceBook and other social media.
There are over 2400 armed domestic terrorist groups in America seeking to undertake the violent overthrow of the government much like the Oklahoma City bombing by Timothy McVeigh. Progressives should not be joining with the Tea Party in promoting the same anti-government vitriol for the purpose of building their base.
I’m a progressive, but some progressives are starting to get as looney as the Tea Party in their anti-government paranoia. We are a republic, a government of laws and judicial processes, not a democracy ruled by the emotions of pundits promoting the latest political scandals and political demagoguery. Our government was designed in the Constitution, and all of our laws, whether we agree with them or not, have been enacted through a Constitutional process, even when that process has been corrupted by lobbying. The people are responsible for the government and laws we have, and have a duty to become informed by facts in order to vote corrections to the process and policy.
Snowden has faith in the Peoples Republic of China? Do any Americans realize that Hong Kong belongs to Chinese Government? How did Snowden get a visa to China so quickly? Why did he announce his defection during President Obama’s meeting with President Xi Jinping of China?
Now Snowden claims to trust the law of Hong Kong which is a special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China. Snowden trusts China uphold his protection of the American Constitution, but not laws in America? China has government transparency? China doesn’t do cyber war?

News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch files for divorce from wife

Rupert Murdoch, News Corp’s chief executive and one of the richest men in America, has filed for divorce from his third wife Wendi, a spokesman for the company confirmed to CNBC on Thursday.
The reasons for the split were not immediately clear. The company spokesman said the couple’s relationship had been irretrievably broken for more than six months before he filed for divorce Thursday.
Born in China and educated in the U.S., the former Wendi Deng was working for News Corp. subsidiary Star TV in Hong Kong when she met Murdoch in 1997.
Two years later, Murdoch, 82, married Deng, 44, on a yacht in New York Harbor — less than three weeks after his divorce from second wife, Anna, was finalized. They have two daughters, born in 2001 and 2003.

Marco Rubio crafting tougher amendment on gov’t benefits for immigrants

Sen. Marco Rubio is preparing to offer an amendment to the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill he helped negotiate to strengthen provisions that would prevent former illegal immigrants from receiving federal benefits.
The Florida Republican is collaborating on this proposal with Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. Details of the amendment were not yet available. But Rubio said the measure would be designed to strengthen the principles of comprehensive reform legislation the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” authored, which included prohibiting millions of newly legalized immigrant residents from obtaining federal assistance — such as Obamacare subsidies — and burdening U.S. taxpayers.
“I’m working with Sen. Hatch,” Rubio told The Washington Examiner Wednesday. “I think if we went to the floor and argued the benefits side of this, it’s going to be very difficult for people to oppose it.”
Why should the American people be paying for Obamacare subsidies for people that are not permanent residents of the United States. So that has to be fixed and we’ve got to take care of that part of it,” Rubio said, adding that even legal non-citizen residents with green cards do not qualify for Medicare or Social Security during their first five years in the U.S.
Earlier this week, Rubio proposed an amendment to the Senate immigration bill to beef up a provision that requires former illegal immigrants to demonstrate English proficiency as a condition of advancing to permanent residency, and eventually, citizenship.
Whether to permit the newly legalized to access federal health care benefits is an issue that tripped up negotiations among members of a bipartisan immigration working group in the House. Unable to agree, the House group shelved the issue.
The Senate gang agreed to prohibit former undocumented immigrants from accessing benefits under the Affordable Care Act. But some Senate Republicans have expressed concerns about potential loopholes, and any Hatch-Rubio amendment would be designed to bolster the legislation’s intent.

BALTIMORE — All those polls on just how little Americans understand about the health law sprung to life an hour north of Washington one evening this week, as Baltimore County held one of the first public forums to try to explain the new health care options and how to sign up for them.
About 100 people, most middle-age adults to seniors, attended the session at a temple here Monday. Their questions provided a glimpse of the public’s perceptions of Obamacare enrollment and underscored the challenge facing the law’s backers: Before people can sign up, they have to understand it.
It’s very expensive, 2,500 pages, people were holding it up on the television saying, ‘Look at this,’” said Dr. Calvin O. Culmer, who spoke on behalf of the county, summing up the punditry people heard about the Affordable Care Act
“But really, it’s fairly simple,” said Culmer, president and CEO of Peak Performance, a health consulting group. He framed it as a law that aims to increase insurance coverage, improve health care outcomes, streamline the delivery of health care and reduce health costs.
Most of the questions from the audience centered on how the subsidies would work, who would help people sign up and the quality of coverage. There also were several questions about why the subsidies are tied to “silver” coverage — one of the four categories of health plans, all named for a metal — and whether other plans would be subsidized, too. The Morning Plum: House GOP stomps all over Republican rebranding

Consider what the House GOP is up to right now. House Republicans recently passed an immigration amendment, pushed by anti-reform diehard Steve King, that would effectively mandate the deportation of the “DREAMers” who were taken to the U.S. as children. House Republicans are planning a vote next week on a measure that would ban abortions after 20 weeks, after defeating amendments that would exempt cases of rape or incest. And yesterday, House Republicans approved a version of the 2012 National Defense Reauthorization Act that contains what The Advocate calls “three controversial, antigay amendments, one of which is aimed at delaying repeal implementation of don’t ask, don’t tell.”
What do these three things have in common? They would seem to run directly counter to the belief among some Republican strategists that the party needs to move beyond cultural battles and preoccupations that imperil the GOP’s ability to remake itself as a more tolerant, inclusive party and to better reach out to constituencies it has alienated.
That much-ballyhooed Republican National Committee “autopsy” into what went wrong in 2012 declared that the Republican Party needs to improve its outreach to Latinos, women, and gays, and acknowledged a need to reckon with the rising embrace of gay rights among young voters. Analysts have similarly determined that the Republican Party’s failure to improve its appeal among these groups could be problematic over the long term, because they comprise key groups in the “Rising American Electorate,” i.e., groups that are increasingly important to the Democratic coalition of the future and will only be growing as a share of the vote. Yet these big-ticket items emerging from the House appear narrowly pitched to nativists and religious and social conservatives who make up the GOP base.
Even some Republicans appear worried about this. As one unnamed strategist told National Journal’s Josh Kraushaar, the King amendment on immigration “reinforces a tone of insensitivity that is just beyond baffling.” Kraushaar concluded that recent GOP behavior — including the party’s spurning of pragmatic GOP governors like Chris Christie — suggest that the RNC’s recommendations “have been forgotten.”

Arizona Senator’s Son Used Homophobic, Anti-Semitic Language On Twitter

Sen. Jeff Flake’s high school–aged son Tanner used Twitter to threaten the “faggot” who stole his bike that he “will find you, and … will beat the crap out of you,” joked about an acquaintance stealing one-liners because he’s Jewish, and went by the name “n1ggerkiller” in an online game.
“I’m very disappointed in my teenage son’s words, and I sincerely apologize for the insensitivity. This language is unacceptable, anywhere. Needless to say, I’ve already spoken with him about this, he has apologized, and I apologize as well,” Sen. Flake said in a statement to BuzzFeed.
Although Tanner has since locked his Twitter account, a series of tweets from January and February show the Arizona Republican’s son repeatedly using the slurs.
Additionally, Flake posted screenshots of scores from games on “Fun Run,” a social gaming app. The screenshots show that Flake goes by the name of “n1ggerkiller.”
UPDATE: A source points out that Flake’s YouTube comments are also littered with offensive language. A preliminary review of the hundreds of comments shows he repeatedly called other users “nigger” and “faggot,” called Mexicans the “scum of the Earth,” and on several occasions bragged that his father is a member of Congress.

Obama winning on social media, could Twitter ‘blackness’ be the reason?

Barack Obama has a 69 percent approval rating, at least with people who use Twitter. And it turns out, the people who use Twitter are disproportionately black.
The latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll finds that 14 percent of African-Americans report using Twitter — double the percentage of white Americans who say they tweet, and nearly twice the 9 percent figures for Hispanics and Americans overall
That could be part of the reason Obama has such high approval ratings among the Twitterati. The president has a 46 percent approval rating in the NBC/WSJ poll, but that figure jumps to 69 percent among Twitter users, though it ticks up to just 48 percent among social media users overall.
The source of the president’s troubles are those who are not connected. He scores just a 43 percent approval rating among people who don’t use social media at all. And the president’s approval rating among Facebook users is 47 percent, meaning those users may be the most broadly representative of the online U.S. population.

In Maine yesterday, state Rep. Linda Sanborn (D), a retired family physician, spoke out in support of her proposal to accept federal Medicaid expansion funds. It’s a measure that enjoys bipartisan support nationwide, and there’s no good reason for Maine to reject the federal resources.
But one of Sanborn’s colleagues, state Rep. Ken Fredette (R), nevertheless rose in opposition to the policy, and made a rather unique argument.
For the record, Fredette, the leader of Maine Republicans in the state House, did not appear to be kidding.
After having watched it a couple of times, I’m still not sure what this state lawmaker is trying to say. Does he believe women are confused by federal-state partnerships in providing health care benefits? Does he think men necessarily oppose Medicaid expansion because of their male brains? Fredette certainly seems to be under the impression that he — with his “man’s mind” — is better able to understand health care costs that women apparently can’t see.

He (still) calls me daily and we chat about everything and nothing like we’re best friends, except he’s, you know, my dad, and there are certain lines we just don’t cross even though I’m well into my grown years.
I don’t look forward to Father’s Day because of Black Twitter. On Mother’s Day, there are plenty of shout outs to the moms. The tweets read something akin to, “Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. You deserve the best!” On Father’s Day, it’s more like, “Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers that actually raise their kids.” Sometimes dads get skipped all together when the greetings read, “Happy Father’s Day to all the single moms holding it down.

One of America’s favorite Muppets popped up at the Executive Mansion on Wednesday.
President Obama jetted off for meetings on Wednesday and just hours after his exit, Cookie Monster was spotted sneaking into The White House.
One of America’s most beloved Sesame Street characters popped up at the Executive Mansion to meet with top level officials including the President’s most trusted adviser, Valerie Jarrett.

Another Muppet, Abby Cadabby, also tagged along for the high-profile appearance.
They were invited by the White House Office of Public Engagement to publicize a new Sesame Workshop program, “Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration,” an outreach effort to help the 2.7 million children in America whose parents are in jail.
The Public Engagement office hosted a panel today discussing the issues facing these children, moderated by the program’s head writer, Joey Mazzarino.

Jobless claims show unexpected improvement

Lately, just about all of the news on initial unemployment claims has been good, and the new figures out this morning were unexpectedly encouraging.
The number of people who applied for new regular state unemployment-insurance benefits fell 12,000 to 334,000 in the week ended June 8, reaching the lowest level since early May, pointing to a slower pace of layoffs, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected a seasonally adjusted initial claims figure of 350,000, compared with 346,000 in the prior week.
To reiterate the point I make every Thursday morning, it’s worth remembering that week-to-week results can vary widely, and it’s best not to read too much significance into any one report.

Wisconsin’s Walker: ‘I don’t have any problem with ultrasound’

Following up on a segment from last night’s show, and a post from Laura Conaway yesterday, Wisconsin Republicans are poised to approve a rather remarkable piece of legislation. The state Senate, led by an enraged Senate President Mike Ellis, pushed through an anti-abortion measure that would, among other things, require women in Wisconsin to have an ultrasound before terminating an unwanted pregnancy.
The proposal is on its way to the state House, where it’s expected to be approved by a Republican majority. And what of Wisconsin’s governor?
There are a few angles to this worth remembering.
