WFTV.COM —The court on Tuesday has reached 40 potential jurors needed to advance to a second round of questioning for jury selection in George Zimmerman’s murder trial.
Zimmerman, 29, of Sanford, is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, saying he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self-defense in February 2012.
Out of the 40 who are moving on, 24 are women and 16 men. The 40 are made up of 25 white, eight Hispanic, six black and one mixed-race potential jurors.
One of the potential jurors who made it through is a middle-aged black man who criticized Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton for coming to town and portraying the deadly shooting as racially motivated.

I don’t necessarily think P67 would be bad for the State because he has kids. He’s trying now to protect them. Listen to him speak about the little one wanting to sleep with them b/c she’s scared. Little kids ask to sleep with the parents when they’re scared all the time. It makes them feel safe. I think he would sympathize for a child being chased down & killed. Just saying…

I shudder to think of Trayvon, lying there shot to death, LIFELESS. He didn’t have a clue that he’d be stalked and murdered, carrying a bag of Skittles and ice tea.
If I remember correctly, the death screams on the 911 tape have a duration of around 40 seconds, maybe longer. That’s how long Trayvon knew he was going to be killed. I have often wondered what Zimmerman said to Trayvon in those seconds. There’s a mighty fine line between murder 1 and murder 2, in my opinion, because that is a long, long time to point a gun before you pull the trigger. But if Zimmerman is convicted of murder 2 I’ll consider it justice.

(CBS) SANFORD, Fla. –The family of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin has “every confidence” that a jury will convict George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch captain accused in his shooting death, a family attorney said.
Martin’s family, including his mother Sybrina Fulton and father Tracy Martin, have attended jury selection proceedings in the Seminole County criminal courthouse since they launched more than a week ago. Attorneys in the case have been whittling down a pool of potential jurors, questioning them on their exposure to news reports in the high-profile case.
Tuesday, prosecutors and defense attorneys reached an important milestone — identifying 40 potential jurors eligible to move on to a second round of questioning. The attorneys will be able to ask the candidates more in-depth questions when court resumes at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The family has been “encouraged” by the jury selection process, said Daryl Parks, a Martin family attorney, adding that they feel the panel of six jurors and four alternates ultimately seated will be able to be impartial.

I-5 was a foreman in two juries 5 times . He was a foreman in several of the cases.
A middle-aged African American man, he said he heard self-defense was involved with the case.
Stated black leaders came to Sanford to give support but doesn’t think it was necessary. He understands what they were trying to do but feels like you have to let the law work. He wasn’t opposed to black leaders expressing themselves but felt it wasn’t necessary because it stirs up feelings. He remembers the civil rights era and remember the marches and the emotions associated with it.

Once you’re summoned for jury duty, it’s open season. they try to conceal the jury as much as they can, but if this is going to be televised, they’re bound to pan that courtroom and show the jury.

A dismissed potential juror who caused a stir last week claims that George Zimmerman’s defense team defamed him.
The Florida Civil Rights Association will now provide legal representation to Jerry Counelis.
The former prospective juror, known as E7, was banned from Seminole County Courthouse last Friday.
The man was dismissed from jury selection a few days prior when he was caught lying about comments he made on Facebook regarding the case.
Counelis claims defense attorney Mark O’Mara defamed him afterwards when O’Mara called Counelis a “stealth juror.”
Counelis filed a civil complaint. O’Mara said he won’t apologize.
“For whatever reason, he did not take the opportunity to be straight-forward in court. This process only works if you can tell the truth,” O’Mara said in a statement. “Stealth jurors are a cancer on our system.”

B-72: A young man who does maintenance at a school and competes in arm wrestling tournaments. He said he avoids the news because he does not want to be “brainwashed.”
SG2 notes:Juror B72 wants to know what the evidence is before making up his mind. Says he talked to a friend who was passionate about the case and friend said George Zimmerman shot the poor kid. Some of my friends think, “yeah, he definitely did it.” One friend thought George Zimmerman’s just “guarding his turf.”
E-22: A middle-aged African-American woman who said that after the shooting Sanford police should have booked Zimmerman and asked him more questions.
SG2 notes:Reads the Orlando Sentinel.She believes commentary in the media is their opinion but do think police should have investigated more. O’Mara was baiting but she wouldn’t bite.
E-13: A young white woman who goes to college and works two jobs. She heard the shooting was a “racial thing.”
SG2 notes:Still lives at home with parents. Says she could be fair to both sides because I don’t really know that much. She heard it was a “racial thing,” based on things Trayvon Martin’s family said. “Lot of people think that”.
E-28: A middle-aged white woman who works as a nurse. She knew little about the case and has no opinion about Zimmerman’s guilt.

K-95: A middle-aged woman who’s a full-time student and “IT geek” with two children. She was critical of protests calling for Zimmerman’s arrest.
SG2 notes: a white woman, was a part of the home owners association.Says media gave different stories.Says kids have been killed in other places and didn’t see demonstrations there. Thinks people came to start trouble b/c Sanford is a small town.
P-67: A native of Mexico who seemed eager to serve on the jury, describing it as a civic duty. “Some people think it is a racist thing,” he said of the shooting.
SG2 notes: He’d like to serve on jury. This is his first time serving on a jury and would like to see all the evidence before he makes a decision. He was born in Mexico. Received citizenship in Chicago.He wants an opportunity to serve his adopted country.
G-14: A middle-aged white woman. “I remember a lot of anger, a lot of people upset that Mr. Zimmerman was not arrested immediately.”
SG2 notes: A middle-aged white woman. Exposed to the case through tv. Says protesters were creating a discussion that was not a discussion that necessarily needed to be had.
G-29: A young black woman who has lived in Seminole County eight months. “There is a lot of racial tension built up,” she said, but she “stayed away from it.”
SG2 notes: a young black female.Saw friends on facebook posting their opinions about the case. The opinions of friends were favorable to Trayvon Martin. Got her information from Phillips Phile on talk radio.
G-47: A young white man who works as assistant manager at restaurant. Zimmerman appears to be “stuck in the worst situation” possible, he said.
SG2 notes: Juror G47 white male, works 50 hours/week in restaurant, heard talk it is a self-defense case, cares for sick parents. Believes the people had a right to protests as an American citizen. Wants to look at both sides of a issue. West was ticked b/c he G47 wouldn’t bite!
G-63: A young, unemployed man who described himself as “mixed race.” He knew few details about the case but denounced stereotyping and said people sometimes interject race into cases.
SG2 notes: G-63: Stated “to me I think there is no need to be a protester when there is nothing worth protesting about”. Says same folks always complaining about something. Thinks protesting doesn’t make sense. Stated the Boston marathon bombing has no impact in on his life.
G-66: A retired white woman who cares for her toddler grandson and moved to Central Florida in 2011. When she saw photos of Zimmerman’s injuries, “I felt sorry for him.”
SG2 notes: Juror G66 is originally from Chicago. Watches news. Saw photos of Zimmerman with head injuries, Trayvon Martin with hoodie on. Felt sorry for George Zimmerman. Saw a bloody photo of the back of the Zimmerman’s head. Knows Trayvon was from Miami, saw photos on Trayvon’s phone, believes mother was having trouble with him. Saw Zimmerman go to the scene and to do the reenactment of what happened.
G-81: A tall black man who lives less than a half mile from the scene of the shooting. There is a racial divide in Sanford, he said, but the media has misportrayed the city.
SG2 notes: Feels it a right to protest for injustice. We have had a history in this country of people protesting injustice. Stated it was sadness that someone lost their life. Took family to the park right across the street from where the shooting took place. They were concerned b/c a teenager lost his life. Stated death of AA males losing their lives through violence since slavery at an alarming rate.
H-6: A young white man who heard the phone call Zimmerman made to police before the shooting. “He sounded like he was concerned for his neighborhood.”
SG2 notes: white male, 30s, TV viewer, no newspaper, does not know if it is “self-defense.” He heard Zimmerman had pictures of injuries. He never saw pictures for himself and doesn’t know if it self defense.
H-7: A red-haired man about age 50 in a business suit who recalled “a big brouhaha in Sanford,” described protesters as “a nuisance” and said, “I still don’t know why it became a high profile case.”
SG2 notes: Juror H7 is 50-something white male. Heard about the case on local news and national news. Watches CBS. Stated outsiders came in and protested demanding an arrest. Thought local government could take care of it. He heard the parents sent Trayvon to Sanford. Doesn’t understand why it’s a high profile case.
H-18: A handsome, muscled, dark-skinned man in his 20s with an accent who’s a mechanic, owns his shop with a partner and moved here from Kuwait. He said he avoids discussing certain topics. “When it’s politics, religion or race, I just don’t get involved.”
SG2 notes: Stated serving on jury will impact him in a big way. Serving on jury would be a hardship. Moved here from Kuwait. He’s going through a divorce.
H-29: A white-haired man who described national civil rights leaders who led protests in Sanford “a little circus come to town.” It was “negative for the city,” he said. “That honestly turned me off.”
SG2 notes: Juror H 29 heard about the case through local media that there had been a shooting in the Sanford area. A sad event. Remembers photos of Zimmerman b/c they were splashed everywhere. Saw photos of Trayvon Martin from young to older. Stated “We had a little circus come to town”. Feels it’s negative on the city. Blames it on the media and the Rev. Feels the people that came to Sanford didn’t judge the case on it’s merits.
H-35: A young woman who said she knows little about the case. She “liked” a photo of Trayvon on Facebook. Needs to move by the end of June, which she said would be a hardship.
SG2 notes: She was not interested in the case and did not pay attention to it, she heard about it but hasn’t form an opinion. Moving to Bithlo, in Orange County, at end of month, packing up now. Serving would be a hardship.
H-81: He described the shooting as an “incident” between Zimmerman and Trayvon, and “Mr. Martin ended up dead.” H-81 called the shooting a “very tragic situation.” He has two pending civil cases before Nelson.
SG2 notes: Juror H 81: “I don’t have facts to make judgment … Not trying to apply for this job” as juror. Recalls commentary about the 911 recordings but did not listen to them. H-69: A five-months-pregnant woman who said she saw news about the case on television at work. She mentioned several times that she recalled seeing pictures of Trayvon as “a young child” in the media.
SG2 notes: Juror H 69 is being very evasive. Says the media portrayed Trayvon as a child and she saw a recent photo and found out he’s wasn’t a child but can’t remember which photo. Stated people lose their lives all the time. Juror H 69 is 5 and 1/2 months pregnant. Saw picture of Trayvon Martin posing & not the young boy the media portrayed him.
H-86: A young white woman, who said she knows almost nothing about the case. H-86 says she keeps up with current events, but “certain cases and things I don’t follow.”
SG2 notes: She watches Fox. doesn’t think media is truthful.
I-5: A middle-aged African American man, he said he heard self-defense was involved with the case, at one point referring to Zimmerman as “the gentleman that was defending himself.”
SG2 notes: Stated black leaders came to Sanford to give support but doesn’t think it was necessary. He understands what they were trying to do but feels like you have to let the law work. He wasn’t opposed to black leaders expressing themselves but felt it wasn’t necessary because it stirs up feelings. He remembers the civil rights era and remember the marches and the emotions associated with it.
I-19: A young white woman identified as I-19, who said she hasn’t followed the case and knows only the basic details: “I don’t watch the news, I don’t read the news,” she said.
SG2 notes: I-19, young white female. Knows bare minimum from mother, who watches news. She does not watch news. Sad that Trayvon Martin died. Serving on jury would be hardship. I 19′s boss thinks the case if very interesting and always talks about the case.
I-24: An older white woman who said she followed the case at first, but then “I just kinda tuned out.” Describe the case as “a young man lost his life and another man is fighting for his life.”
SG2 notes: The media came out with the young man was innocent and now they’re coming out with things that happened with him in school. No child is perfect! A young man lost his life and another man is fighting for his life. There are no winners. Stated: she told co-workers that didn’t know all the facts. She did not form an opinion. Stated media makes up stories. Media reported no injuries but later saw bruises on the back of his head and nose.
I-33: Older white man, who said “the more I heard, the less I wanted to hear.” Heard there was a 911 call involved in the case, and “some controversy as to who was doing the screaming” heard in it.
SG2 notes: white male, late 50s early 60s maybe, grey goatee, newspaper reader. “I did feel compassion for both entities.” Subscribes to the Orlando Sentinel. Saw a photo of TM in a hooded sweatshirt. Got injured in a car accident. Heard the recording of the screams. Watches Fox News. He discussed the reaction in the community. Says reaction went both ways… heavy talk in both directions.
I-44: A father of three who said he’s highly skeptical of the media and its “negativity.” He called himself a “sports nut.”
SG2 notes: Doesn’t accept credibility unless it’s in the courtroom. Felt over-exposure about the case form the media. Has no problem with the protests. He is a father of 3. Believes the media feeds negativity and tries to protect family from it.
Court is waiting on some potential jurors to arrive and will take a short recess until they get to the court.
