Abbey Road, Let It Be, and break-up
A terrace house with four floors and an attic. It is red brick, with a slate roof, and the ground floor rendered in imitation of stone and painted white. Each upper floor has four sash windows, divided into small panes. The door, with a canopy over it, occupies the place of the second window from the left on the ground floor.
Although Let It Be was the Beatles’ final album release, it was largely recorded before Abbey Road. The project’s impetus came from an idea Martin attributes to McCartney, who suggested they “record an album of new material and rehearse it, then perform it before a live audience for the very first time—on record and on film.”[210] Originally intended for a one-hour television programme to be called “Beatles at Work”, much of the album’s content came from extensive rehearsals filmed by director Michael Lindsay-Hogg at Twickenham Film Studios beginning in January 1969.[210][211] Martin said the project was “not at all a happy recording experience. It was a time when relations between The Beatles were at their lowest”.[210] Lennon described the largely impromptu sessions as “hell … the most miserable … on Earth”, and Harrison, “the low of all-time”.[212] Aggravated by both McCartney and Lennon, Harrison walked out for five days. Upon returning, he threatened to leave the band unless they “abandon[ed] all talk of live performance” and instead focus on finishing a new album, initially titled Get Back, using songs recorded for the TV special.[213] He also demanded they cease work at Twickenham and relocate to the newly finished Apple Studios. The other band members agreed, and the idea came about to salvage the footage shot for the TV production for use in a feature film.[214]
In an effort to alleviate tensions within the band and improve the quality of their live sound, Harrison invited keyboardist Billy Preston to participate in the last nine days of sessions.[215] Preston received label billing on the “Get Back” single—the only musician ever to receive that acknowledgment on an official Beatles release.[216] At the conclusion of the rehearsals, the band could not agree on a location to film a concert, rejecting several ideas, including a boat at sea, a lunatic asylum, the Tunisian desert, and the Colosseum.[210] Ultimately, what would be their final live performance was filmed on the rooftop of the Apple Corps building at 3 Savile Row, London, on 30 January 1969.[217] Five weeks later, engineer Glyn Johns, whom Lewisohn describes as Get Back’s “uncredited producer”, began work assembling an album, given “free rein” as the band “all but washed their hands of the entire project.”[218]
New strains developed between the band members regarding the appointment of a financial adviser, the need for which had become evident without Epstein to manage business affairs. Lennon, Harrison and Starr favoured Allen Klein, who had managed the Rolling Stones and Sam Cooke; McCartney wanted John Eastman, brother of Linda Eastman, whom McCartney married on 12 March. Agreement could not be reached, so both were temporarily appointed, but further conflict ensued and financial opportunities were lost.[219] On 8 May, Klein was named sole manager of the band.[220]
Martin said he was surprised when McCartney asked him to produce another album, as the Get Back sessions had been “a miserable experience” and he had “thought it was the end of the road for all of us”.[221] The primary recording sessions for Abbey Road began on 2 July.[222] Lennon, who rejected Martin’s proposed format of a “continuously moving piece of music”, wanted his and McCartney’s songs to occupy separate sides of the album.[223] The eventual format, with individually composed songs on the first side and the second consisting largely of a medley, was McCartney’s suggested compromise.[223] On 4 July, the first solo single by a Beatle was released: Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance”, credited to the Plastic Ono Band. The completion and mixing of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” on 20 August 1969 was the last occasion on which all four Beatles were together in the same studio.[224] Lennon announced his departure to the rest of the group on 20 September, but agreed to withhold a public announcement to avoid undermining sales of the forthcoming album.[225]
Released six days after Lennon’s declaration, Abbey Road sold four million copies within three months and topped the UK charts for a total of seventeen weeks.[226] Its second track, the ballad “Something”, was issued as a single—the only Harrison composition ever to appear as a Beatles A-side.[227] Abbey Road received mixed reviews, although the medley met with general acclaim.[226] Unterberger considers it “a fitting swan song for the group”, containing “some of the greatest harmonies to be heard on any rock record”.[228] MacDonald calls it “erratic and often hollow”, despite the “semblance of unity and coherence” offered by the medley.[229] Martin singled it out as his personal favourite of all the band’s albums; Lennon said it was “competent” but had “no life in it”. Recording engineer Emerick noted that the replacement of the studio’s valve mixing console with a transistorized one yielded a less punchy sound, leaving the group frustrated at the thinner tone and lack of impact and contributing to its “kinder, gentler” feel relative to their previous albums.[230]
For the still unfinished Get Back album, one last song, Harrison’s “I Me Mine”, was recorded on 3 January 1970. Lennon, in Denmark at the time, did not participate.[231] In March, rejecting the work Johns had done on the project, now retitled Let It Be, Klein gave the session tapes to American producer Phil Spector, who had recently produced Lennon’s solo single “Instant Karma!”[232] In addition to remixing the material, Spector edited, spliced and overdubbed several of the recordings that had been intended as “live”. McCartney was unhappy with the producer’s approach and particularly dissatisfied with the lavish orchestration on “The Long and Winding Road”, which involved a fourteen-voice choir and thirty-six-piece instrumental ensemble.[233] McCartney’s demands that the alterations to the song be reverted were ignored,[234] and he publicly announced his departure from the band on 10 April 1970, a week before the release of his first, self-titled solo album.[233][235]
On 8 May, the Spector-produced Let It Be was released. Its accompanying single, “The Long and Winding Road”, was the Beatles’ last; it was released in the United States, but not Britain.[147] The Let It Be documentary film followed later that month, and would win the 1970 Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.[236] Sunday Telegraph critic Penelope Gilliatt called it “a very bad film and a touching one … about the breaking apart of this reassuring, geometrically perfect, once apparently ageless family of siblings.”[237] Several reviewers stated that some of the performances in the film sounded better than their analogous album tracks.[238] Describing Let It Be as the “only Beatles album to occasion negative, even hostile reviews”, Unterberger calls it “on the whole underrated”; he singles out “some good moments of straight hard rock in ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’ and ‘Dig a Pony'”, and praises “Let It Be”, “Get Back”, and “the folky ‘Two of Us’, with John and Paul harmonizing together”.[239] McCartney filed suit for the dissolution of the Beatles’ contractual partnership on 31 December 1970.[240] Legal disputes continued long after their break-up, and the dissolution was not formalized until 29 December 1974.[241]

Can’t really drop the sons shows without cause… or Food Network would be subject to a lawsuit.
While I am on this topic, I took a look at the third video (not the first or second). IMHO, this was a woman who doesn’t live in the real world. The question was asked ‘why didn’t she settle that lawsuit?’ It’s because she has lived in a world where she is mistress of the manor. Her restaurant, her shows, her vacation homes, her sponsors. And the more wealth, fame, notoriety she obtained, the more insulated — and comfortable — she got. So she could throw epithets around without impunity – who was gone check her, boo? She could make racist jokes, maintain a hostile work environment and allow sexual harrassment to take place at her restaurants — again, who was gonna stop her?
So, instead of settling the lawsuit, she decided to fight. How dare that Jackson women sue her — this was PAULA’S world. And, by gum, she would tell that hussy a thing or to and win that lawsuit. Hmmmph. She never took it seriously.
Let me repeat: Paula Deen never took the lawsuit, deposition or the press allegations seriously. Up until 2 hours ago, Paula Deen thought that all she had to do was have a friend of her sons set up a video camera, record her apology and all would be right in her world again. Apologize for saying that word… well, if she doesn’t say it on camera, then it would make the apoloigy sincere and folks would forgive and forget. Then her world would be right again.
Except the video looked like amateur hour and she got clowned. Again. The she released a second video… same result. She looked like an idiot – and so did Food Network, by extension. Food Network at that point had no other option but to let her go.
She didn’t take it seriously until it was too late.

It’s not true. They name all the brothers and I can tell you. The only ones who she would have to take care of are Jermaine and Randy.
The others work. Tito has a career as a bass player. He performs all around the world. He does jazz, has for decades. He may not make Janet or Michael money but he’s one that is self sufficient. Marlon and Jackie both work for the MJ estate, and Marlon actually has business interest, especially in Africa.
That was one of the reasons last year that those three were not involved in the kidnapping of the Mother and wanting her to fight against the estate (Marlon was for a minute until he realized that Jermaine and Randy set it up to look like the mother was sick and needed rescuing, but was fine. Among her recollections was an incident from her youth where she hit a black girl “with a bolo bat” and the girl’s mother wound up in jail. She also wrote about a time later in her life when she attempted to make a “Sambo burger” on her TV show and had to be dissuaded by producers.

The Republicans seem to be doing all they can to get Hillary Clinton elected in 2016 by supporting legislation that starves babies after insisting they be born and other acts of foolishness. So it is interesting that they are also – three years out from the next presidential election – starting a Stop Hillary 2016 movement
Many of us look forward to it, to watching Hillary metaphorically slap Paul around. The ever-quotable Paul seems to be doing all he can today to set up his humiliating political demise tomorrow.
Her husband Bill, who once served as president and may soon have the distinction of being the very first first husband, says he doesn’t know if Hillary will run in 2016 but Republicans aren’t betting on that.
Bill says we need to stop asking about 2016 and focus on 2013 and the problems we are facing now. Ironically, the Stop Hillary 2016 movement ignores the now in favor of the future when the best defense against Hillary in 2016 is the now.
But Republicans have been ignoring the now since 2008 and they show no signs of changing. It is no secret that the whole Benghazi imbroglio was about pre-empting Hillary Clinton, not about any actual failings in the Obama administration.

Ohio School Bans Afro Puffs and Braids

The Horizon Science Academy in Ohio is facing heat from the natural hair community after a copy of a letter to parents that included a ban on afro puffs and ‘small twisted braids’ was posted online.
The letter details changes to the dress code for the upcoming school year and includes the line:
Afro-puffs and small twisted braids, with our without rubberbands, are NOT permitted.
It’s unclear what the administration means by small twisted braids, but if they are referring to box braids they are banning a protective style that black girls have worn for generations. Afro-puffs are essentially the black version of the ponytail (when pulled back our hair puffs out instead of laying down), and yet the rules do not have a ban on ponytails for students of other ethnicities.
It’s unspecified whether this ban applies to both male and female students, or male students alone.
The dress code restrictions highlight an age-old struggle that naturals face from both within and outside of the black community. Our hair is viewed as radical, funky or unruly in its natural state, and restrictions are sometimes placed on us in academic and professional settings that do not extend to our non-black counterparts.
So far the school hasn’t issued a response or explanation of this dress code item.

I’d like to thank the folks at the National Journal for giving me the best belly-laugh of a fine morning. They’ve produced a story about the terrible dilemma in which the congressional Republicans will find themselves if, as expected, the Supreme Court guts the enforcement provisions of the Voting Rights Act and tosses the whole thing back to Congress to reboot the law. And, I am sorry, but there has not been a funnier paragraph of political analysis than this one written in English anywhere on the planet this century.
No. Stop. Seriously. You’re killing me.
And you keep using this word, “eager.” I do not think it means what you think it means.
The Republican party wants to appear to be reaching out to minority voters without actually having to change its nature in order to do so. (Ted Cruz, by the way, is already proposing amendments that would reinstate the Arizona voter-ID law that the court struck down earlier this week. Outreach!) is now run by the elements of the conservative movement empowered by the party’s adoption into itself in the mid-1960’s of the remnants of the American apartheid state. This has not changed. The VRA is in peril at all because Republicans out in the states want the enforcement provisions gutted so that they can enact even more voter-suppression laws than they have already. (And does anybody seriously believe that the national party isn’t behind this phenomenon? Not me.) Nikki Haley’s not going to get in the way of this, nor is “Bobby” Jindal. Tim Scott at least will get to vote on whatever comes up in the Congress to remedy an adverse decision by the Court, which won’t be much, and probably won’t pass anyway. (And Scott will front for the effort, thereby ascending to the J.C. Watts Memorial Chair Of Imminent Irrelevance.) The obvious remedy, which even came up during the oral arguments before the Court, is to extend Section V, the enforcement provision requiring pre-clearance of any changes in local voting regulations in several Southern states, to cover the entire country. Good luck with that one. The Court is going to gut the law, and kick this back to Congress, which is going to do nothing — or, at least, nothing good. Republicans are going to line up, probably unanimously, in favor of doing nothing. But thanks to the National Journal for lightening up my morning.

(Reuters) – Call them Obamacare’s army.
From the chief actuary at the California health insurance exchange that President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law established to the legions of call center staffers who will help people trying to buy insurance through such state exchanges, the number of people working to implement “Obamacare” has reached the tens of thousands, a Reuters analysis has found.
No one said that overhauling healthcare, which accounts for 17 percent of all national spending, was going to happen with a skeleton crew.
State offices that will run insurance exchanges are hiring tens of thousands, either on staff or through outsourcing firms. Federal agencies that are key to implementing the law, such as the Internal Revenue Service, plan to hire thousands more, and private non-profit groups backed by the White House are dispatching thousands of newly hired staffers and volunteers into the field.
The number of such workers, obtained through documents and interviews with officials, consultants and contractors, could be significant enough to produce a modest, if temporary, boost to employment across several industries.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Launches A New Attempt To Kill Social Security

The idea that America is a democracy and serves the needs of the people is an altruistic ideology that exists in theory, but is, in reality, a farce perpetrated to keep the population from rising up and slaying those most intent on tyranny and ravaging the people. Americans are under the false impression that their representatives in government serve the people’s best interests, and there is evidence that there are Democrats willing to buck the fascist corporate world to provide Americans with a semblance of humanitarian assistance whether it is labor laws, social programs, a decent transportation system, or protection from predatory capitalists, but they are few. Eighty years ago, Franklin D. Roosevelt fought to provide Americans with security in their old age, and despite the people funded their own meager retirement, Republicans yearned to abolish the Social Security Trust and send old Americans into poverty and a decrepit end life facing starvation, homelessness, ill-health and an early death.
Over the past four years as Republicans convinced President Obama, Democrats, and most Americans the nation was on the verge of insolvency due to debt and deficit, they ratcheted up the 80-year crusade to eviscerate the Social Security Trust despite it neither adds nor reduces deficit by a penny. Now that it turns out the economy is not bankrupt, and debt and deficit are falling rapidly, the real economic policy drivers are launching a new effort to eliminate Social Security and complete the 80-year task Republicans have failed to achieve.
On Wednesday, the United States Chamber of Commerce executive vice-president for government affairs, addressed the issue of abolishing Social Security and announced a new initiative to convince their puppets in Washington to cut Social Security because the idea of giving retired Americans their own savings for doing nothing is contrary to the Chamber’s business model. The model is America’s capitalism; giving people their own money for “loafing around and not doing anything” productive to drive corporate profits is wrong from a business standpoint, and the “government paying people not to work” regardless they paid into Social Security and enriched businesses has got to stop. According to the Chamber, federal retirement programs depress participation in the workforce and prevent Americans from investing their earnings in Wall Street, banks, and buying products made in China corporations avoid paying taxes on.
The concept of retired people living out their end days with the developed world’s worst pensions and not slaving for poverty-level wages is beyond the Chamber’s comprehension, and to see it come to an end, the Chamber of Commerce is going all-in to push for the end of Social Security. The people driving America’s economic policy assert Social Security is not sustainable and they have made every attempt to starve the Trust of funds by keeping wages low, opposing the President’s job creation plans to keep unemployment numbers up, and quash discussion of lifting the cap on earnings that would keep Social Security solvent well into the next century. However, expecting the titans of industry, Wall Street, and the uber-wealthy to contribute the same percentage of their income, all their income, the same as poverty-level labor is beyond the wealthy’s intellectual capacity, and part of American inequity favoring the plutocrats controlling the nation.

Farm bill debacle shows John Boehner needs Nancy Pelosi

In another embarrassment for House Speaker John Boehner, the farm bill went down to a surprise defeat in the House this afternoon, 195-234. Most Democrats voted against it, because of its deep cuts to food stamps, but what really sealed its fate is that in spite of those cuts, 62 Republicans voted against it, too, apparently because it didn’t cut spending enough.
The leadership of the House GOP — which, last time I checked, controls the Lower Chamber – is blaming Democrats for failing to deliver enough votes to make passage possible. A spokesman for Eric Cantor claimed it shows Dems “are not able to govern.” Jed Lewison has a good post demonstrating how absurd this is:

Getting On the Dean Train

I had a contract with Howard Dean’s organization Democracy for America last year. They obviously valued my advice even though I am not a doctrinaire progressive. They hired me even though I didn’t even support Howard Dean’s presidential run. I am not sure that I would support a second run by Dr. Dean, but I might.
I probably will be more sympathetic to Dr. Dean’s campaign than I will be to Hillary Clinton’s campaign. I am not sure, however, whether I am ready to get on board the Dean train. I will have to see what Biden is going to do, I am certain that I will oppose Andrew Cuomo. Other than that, I am open-minded.

Today the GOP farm bill went down in flames as 62 of the GOP Teabag faction voted against the leadership, joining nearly all Democrats to deal Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor yet another defeat from within. Of course, the Teabaggers didn’t vote against the bill because they were aghast at the steep cuts to vital food stamp funding. No, they wanted to just do away with food stamps all together, and much like the purity left threw a fit that the bill wasn’t “good” enough.

Currently, we have only one working branch of government, and that’s the Executive. Congress is mired in dysfunction on both sides of Capitol Hill, and unless 2014 produces a Democratic tidal wave (which I’m hoping it will), the country will limp into 2016 for a final showdown. The Supreme Court will have its defining moment next week when its term ends and it releases the most contentious decisions of the session.
The GOP has shown itself completely unable to perform the most minor tasks of government; major initiatives are way beyond its abilities. Those of us in the non-mainstream media have to sound this incompetence like a war-drum, keeping the insistent beat that the GOP isn’t interested in governing; it’s interested in just blowing up crap.

At a House Science Committee hearing on climate change, climate change non-believer Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., questioned Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz on the science behind climate change, and took exception to a recent campaign by Organizing for Action against “climate deniers” in Congress. […]
First, after having watched Rohrabacher for many years, I’m reasonably certain “a civil discourse” is not his principal goal.
Second, it’s interesting to hear those who deny climate science take offense to “climate denier” as a label, suggesting its use is necessary inappropriate.
About a year ago, Paul Krugman picked up on a trend that’s quietly become more common: “right-wing political correctness.” There are a series of words and phrases that Republicans have heard, but would now prefer everyone else not use. For example, we’re not supposed to reference “sea level rise,” because it might give people the impression that climate change is dangerous.

The subtext behind Comey’s FBI nomination

It’s been three weeks since we learned President Obama will nominate James Comey to lead the FBI, but they’ll make it official at an event this afternoon at the White House.
There’s no shortage of interesting angles to the nomination and Comey’s background, but there’s one aspect to this that I think has been largely overlooked.
As everyone in the political world has likely noticed, there have been a few controversies dogging the Obama administration lately, some more serious than others. There are ongoing investigations into possible wrongdoing and congressional probes underway that hope to turn up some dirt on the White House.
With that in mind, if the president and his team had any reason to worry at all about ongoing investigations casting the White House in a negative light — or worse — there’s simply no way Obama would choose a Republican lawyer with a history of independence to lead the FBI. Indeed, as we talked about in May, just the opposite is true — if Obama were the least bit concerned about any of the so-called “scandals,” he’d almost certainly look for a Democratic ally to lead the FBI.
But the president is doing the opposite — Comey is not only a veteran of the Bush/Cheney administration, he also donated to the McCain/Palin and Romney/Ryan campaigns, in the hopes of preventing Obama from getting elected. If the president thought the “scandals” might lead to the Oval Office, he’d never choose someone like Comey to take over the FBI right now.
The subtext is unmistakable: the president knows “there’s no there there” when it comes to Scandal Mania, and he’s not worried in the slightest.

Report: Arrest warrant issued for Hernandez
Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, according to FOX 25 and WBZ NewsRadio 1030 in Boston.
The warrant is for obstruction of justice in connection with the murder investigation of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, who was found dead in an industrial park less than a mile from Hernandez’s North Attleborough, Mass., home Monday.

• A law-enforcement official told FOX 25 that Hernandez left a Boston bar in a car with Lloyd and two other men in the hours that preceded the body’s discovery. The source told FOX 25 that Lloyd sent a text that referenced Hernandez. Three men returned to Hernandez’s home, but Lloyd was not one of them, the source told FOX 25. It’s unclear what transpired in the time between. Lloyd’s body was found near Hernandez’s home on Monday.
• ABC reports that video surveillance from Hernandez’s neighborhood has been found that shows Hernandez with Odin Lloyd and two others only hours before Lloyd’s body was found.
• Thomas Moore, the manager of Rumor nightclub in Boston, told the Boston Herald that Hernandez and Lloyd were at Rumor together last Friday. Hernandez and Lloyd sat together in a VIP section at a roped-off table with several other people.
• Police searched Hernandez’s home for a second day Wednesday. Hernandez was questioned by police on Monday night, SI.com reported.

Mitch McConnell Realizes IRS Scandal Is Over

Mitch McConnell delivered a speech today at the American Enterprise Institute to officially signal that the IRS scandal has entered its post-fact phase. When the IRS first revealed that its Cincinnati office had attempted to enforce its nonprofit laws using a search function that disproportionately impacted conservatives, Republicans were certain it must have come from the White House. They were going to follow the facts. But all of the facts point in the same direction, which is that the Obama administration had nothing to do with it at all. That was the conclusion of the agency’s inspector-general report, as well as the House Oversight Committee’s own interviews, which the Republican majority tried to suppress and which (when the Democrats released them) showed the operation was an independent, well-intentioned effort to enforce the law led by an IRS official who happens to be a conservative Republican.
McConnell’s speech is an attempt to reframe the issue in a way that it can survive the utter absence of incriminating facts. One method he employs is to flip around the burden of proof:
Got that? Before Republicans were going to prove that Obama’s administration was involved. All of the evidence suggests it wasn’t. So now McConnell is framing the question as Obama trying to prove he wasn’t involved. Which, of course, he can’t. For that matter, McConnell can’t prove that he didn’t mastermind the IRS. You can’t prove a negative.

John Oliver Savages Paula Deen Over ‘N-Word’ Controversy: She Might Just Be Suffering From Type-Two Racism

John Oliver opened tonight’s Daily Show targeting celebrity chef Paula Deen for allegedly using the n-word, and for her incredibly unhelpful explanations for it. Oliver also used the opportunity to remind viewers that Deen recently revealed she suffers from type-two diabetes, and found it’s possible Deen was not intentionally trying to hurt anyone’s feelings, she just also suffers from “type-two racism.”
Oliver first took a swipe at Deen’s cooking by saying the n-word she used couldn’t have possibly been “non-fat.” When Deen was asked about ever using the n-word, she said that “of course” she did, to which Oliver said in her voice, “That’s just a given, come on!”
Oliver tried to defend Deen, suggesting “maybe the word just slipped out when she was rapping along to the Wu-Tang Clan.” And Oliver did admit that the idea of a plantation-themed wedding might appeal to Deen’s particular sensibilities, where “the bride and groom exchange slaves” and “the Union army comes through and burns everything to the ground.”
He took a dig at Deen’s diabetes diagnosis, suggesting they should just rename it the “Paula Deen syndrome,” before turning it over to correspondent Jessica Williams, who said that Deen suffers from either type-one racism (inherited) or type-two (“adult onset racism”). She said the second is what happens after years and years of indulging in too much Dixie nostalgia, and ended with a firing shot: “Paula Deen’s words aren’t hurting black people anywhere near as much as her recipes are.”

HHS: ObamaCare policy has saved consumers nearly $5 billion

Consumers saved nearly $4 billion on their insurance premiums last year because of new rules in President Obama’s healthcare law, the administration said Thursday.
The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) said consumers saved $3.9 billion last year from new rules that govern insurance companies’ spending. The rules have saved consumers roughly $5 billion over the past two years, HHS said.
HHS highlighted the savings Thursday as an immediate benefit of the Affordable Care Act and evidence that the law will help make insurance more affordable.

Director, 45, marries 22-year-old husband

Sam Taylor-Wood, the British director behind 2010’s John Lennon flick Nowhere Boy, is now a blushing bride, having married her 22-year-old boyfriend of three years, actor Aaron Johnson.
They married in Somerset, England on Thursday, the Associated Press reports, with Taylor-Wood wearing a gown from the Alexander McQueen fashion house. They’ve also decided to both go by the last name Taylor-Johnson.
The couple met in 2009 on the set of Nowhere Boy and have two young daughters together, Wylda Rae, 23 months and Romy Hero, 5 months. Taylor-Wood also has two older daughters from a previous marriage.

Marc Cherry’s ‘Devious Maids’ find a home on Lifetime

The Desperate Housewives have departed. Say hello to the Devious Maids.
Lifetime today picked up 13 episodes of the new series from Housewives creator Marc Cherry. It will premiere in 2013.
ABC, Housewives’ home, did not pick up the project when it recently chose new shows for the fall schedule. Disney, ABC’s owner, is also a part owner of Lifetime. Maids will be produced by ABC Studios.
Based on the Mexican telenovela Ellas son la Alegria del Hogar, the new show follows five maids who work for the rich in Beverly Hills. Stars include Ana Ortiz, Judy Reyes, Dania Ramirez and Roselyn Sanchez.
In a joint statement, Lifetime executives Nancy Dubuc and Rob Sharenow said: “We are thrilled to be getting into business with one of entertainment’s true visionaries. This show and Marc Cherry’s unique storytelling voice perfectly articulate Lifetime’s strategy of attracting top-tier creatives with their most original and exciting projects.”

Boehner struggles with the economic basics

To serve effectively in Congress, one does not need a post-graduate degree. When it comes to economics, there’s no reason to expect leading lawmakers to be Nobel laureates or be experts in every nuance of complex policies.
But to be taken seriously, policymakers should have some basic understanding of current events, especially if officials hold leadership posts. It’s why I’ve always found it unsettling to see House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) economic illiteracy on display.
So, in the Speaker’s mind, the major Wall Street indexes took a tumble on Wednesday and Thursday because of the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing.

*Janet Jackson may not technically be a billionaire but the fact is that she’s loaded and has managed to do pretty well for herself over the years.
Because of this, the Jackson brothers have turned to her as their new form of income since their initial source, The Michael Jackson Bank, went under new management.
The National Enquirer reported that Janet is tired of fronting the cost for the brothers foreclosures, tax liens, and back child support. The fact that she married a billionaire on top of having her own money isn’t an open invitation to the boys. That’s still her money.
The tabloid claims:
“Janet has been very generous whenever one of her family came to her for a handout,” a source told Enquirer.
“But it seemed like the money she gave them was never enough, and it was only a matter of time before Janet felt like she was being taken advantage of. Eventually, Janet had to change her phone number so that her mom, Katherine, was the only family member with direct access to her. But now Janet’s brothers try to get to her through their mom!”
Janet revealed her secret marriage back in February to Wissam Al Mana. The Middle East business tycoon is nine years younger than her.
“He wants Janet to cut off her family and he supports her decision one hundred percent,” says the insider. Of Janet’s siblings, her five brothers – Jackie, 62, Tito, 59, Jermaine, 58, Marlon, 56, and Randy, 51 – are the most demanding, a source says.
“They’ve asked Janet to help them with everything from late child-support payments to home foreclosures and tax liens,” the source said. “But now she’s drawn a line and let them know enough is enough.”

The demise of the farm bill on the House floor today caught nearly everyone off-guard, but it’s the House Republican leaders who look like chumps. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) have consistently struggled to lead effectively, but today was an especially ignominious failure — they had no idea their bill couldn’t pass.
But don’t worry; the Republican leaders (I use the word loosely) know just who to blame.
Look, I don’t mean to belabor the point, but the first step towards recovery is admitting you have a problem. About a third of the House Republican caucus broke ranks today and voted to kill their own caucus’ farm bill. Some did so for ideological reasons (they wanted deeper cuts), some were motived by regional concerns (the agricultural industry in their areas would be adversely affected).
The bottom line was a clear defeat — the House farm bill garnered 195 votes, 23 short of what was needed for passage.
Cantor’s office is right to feel embarrassed, but it’s time GOP leaders at least considered taking responsibility. It is, after all, what holding “leadership” positions is all about.

Reports: Kim Kardashian names baby North
At last! We think we have a name.
According to TMZ.com and People.com, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have named their newborn daughter North West.
Still no official confirmation via the Kardashians themselves, but they’re known for their ability to manipulate the media and we’re sure they’ll make an announcement when they see fit.

Paula Deen bails on ‘Today’ show appearance
The Today show had been touting a live, Friday interview with Paula Deen, who is in the middle of a bubbling controversy over her use of racial slurs.
But at the start of the NBC morning show, Matt Lauer explained that there would be no interview.
“We just found out she’s a no-show,” he said.
He said he had chatted with her on the phone last night when she had flown in to New York, but that he hadn’t talked to her this morning. Her rep told him that she was “exhausted.”
On Twitter, Lauer added, “Hoping to get more info on the Paula Deen situation soon. Very confusing.”
