(Reuters) – Neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin simply because “he wanted to,” because he was an armed vigilante, and because he viewed the 17-year-old whom he’d never met as just another “punk,” a prosecutor said in opening statements to the jury in a trial that promises to raise thorny issues of race and gun rights.
In a case that centers on a shooting that occurred without a clear eyewitness on a rainy, dark night more than a year ago, prosecutor John Guy sought to cut through doubts surrounding the incident in a fiery 30-minute opening statement that branded Zimmerman as the aggressor for the six jurors who will decide the case.
As the second-degree murder trial opened in earnest after two weeks of jury selection and evidentiary rulings, the prosecutor began by bluntly quoting from Zimmerman’s call to a police dispatcher after first spotting the unarmed, black teen.
“‘Fucking punks. These assholes, they always get away’,” Guy repeated, going on to say those were the “hate-filled words he used to describe a total stranger.”

Yamiche Alcindor: Raimondo says lighting was poor when he arrived so he tried to use the lights of his car to illuminate Zimmerman and another officer.
Raimondo said he tried to get a pulse for Trayvon Martin but there was no pulse.

Raimondo placed blanket over Trayvon’s body out of respect for the victim, so his family couldn’t see how he looked and to preserve for evidence.

Donald O’Brien started in September 2011 as president HOA and then received an email from Zimmerman starting a neighborhood watch.
Donald O’Brien said the home owners association had nothing to do with the neighborhood watch and that Zimmerman did it on his own to set up the program.

1. Chad Joseph
He is Brandi Green’s 15-year-old son. He and Trayvon were playing a video game when Trayvon said he was going to walk to the 711 and asked him if he wanted anything. He said Skittles. Trayvon left and he never saw him again. He was wearing headphones and could not hear.
2. Andrew Gaugh
He was the clerk at the 711 who handled Trayvon’s transaction. He does not have an independent recollection of the transaction.
3. Sean Noffke
He was the 911 operator who fielded GZ’s call. Denies that he would have told GZ to folloe or find Trayvon and call him back with the update. They have a policy that prohibits doing that.
4. Ramona Rumph
She is the custodian of records for the 911 call center. She brought the records for all of GZ calls.
O’Mara objected when the prosecutor began to question her about a previous 911 call by the defendant that is almost identical. The implication is that the defendant has a script that he uses to report suspicious activity.
Basis of the objection: inadmissible uncharged misconduct pursuant to Rule 404(b).

A Florida judge will decide Tuesday whether calls George Zimmerman made to a police dispatcher in the months before he killed Trayvon Martin can be admitted as evidence.
A jury on Monday afternoon heard one of the calls to a non-emergency police number, in which Zimmerman previously reported a suspicious person in his neighborhood — before the defense objected and said it was irrelevant.
Prosecutors said the prior calls would give the jury insight into Zimmerman’s state of mind when he encountered Martin in a gated community of Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, 2012.
Judge Debra Nelson called a recess in the trial to give both sides to prepare arguments about whether the jury can hear and consider the calls in deciding Zimmerman’s fate.
