(NBC News.com)Rallies in support of Trayvon Martin grew in size and intensity Sunday night as protesters in some of America’s largest cities continued demonstrating their anger at the acquittal of George Zimmerman.
The LA Police Department told NBC News that one arrest has been made during a demonstration after protesters threw rocks at police.
LAPD commander Andrew Smith told NBC Los Angeles that officers fired bean bags at some protesters who threw objects at law enforcement.
In New York City, thousands of demonstrators marched from Union Square to the tourist-heavy Times Square Sunday night, slowing and in some cases halting traffic.

Our racial prejudices, the ones that we heard the older people in our family say, the racial jokes about Mexicans without regard for Latino and Hispanic ancestry that isn’t just from one country, or about Chinese or the Koh-reeans to the Aa-rabs, they all inform our worldview. The offspring of these people are forced to navigate murky social waters seeing as how this society becomes more and more pluralistic, it could easily make going to a diverse high school even more challenging if being raised in a household where a certain ethnic group or nationality is constantly looked down upon for everything.

Based on the interview she gave to Anderson Cooper and despite the mixture of softball questions and relatively solid ones, it was apparent to me that she had no intention of ever convicting George Zimmerman. Regardless of however the prosecution presented the case, she fundamentally believed that Zimmerman was in fear of his life at the moment he pulled the trigger and therefore was legally justified.
Her interview contradicted itself at many moments and her logic was grandly flawed. Anderson asked if the trial was ever about race, and she said no, and pulled a line from the post-trial interview of Mark O’Mara and Don West that that was a concoction of the media and “others.” This was a grand rewriting of historical facts as Al Sharpton cleared up immediately on Saturday night. The protests came from the fact that Zimmerman was never even initially arrested for the murder in the first place; the initial protests came so that Zimmerman would get his day in court–and so would Trayvon Martin.

I want to reemphasize what I said yesterday because I do not believe it is possible to underestimate the importance of the two primary police investigators vouching for the defendant.
Investigator Chris Serino and Officer Doris Singleton of the Sanford Police Department testified at the defendant’s trial that they believed his claim of self-defense despite Zimmerman’s minimal and insignificant injuries, numerous lies and material inconsistencies in his stories to them and his admission that he passed up two opportunities to identify himself as a concerned member of Neighborhood Watch and ask the teen if he needed assistance. They did not even arrest Zimmerman.
And shame on Chris Serino and Doris Singleton for vouching for a child killer.
I also cringed in dismay watching Don West cross examine Rachel Jenteal. At the time, I thought the jury would feel sorry for her and despise Don West. Apparently, they decided that she was a liar even though she had no motive to lie and much of her testimony was corroborated by other evidence.
No witness should ever have to endure such lengthy despicable treatment. Bernie de la Rionda should have stopped it with objections to West’s incessant badgering.
I also was extremely disappointed by Judge Nelson’s decision not to strike the testimony of defense witnesses who violated the sequestration rule.
Throughout the case, Mark O’Mara kept repeating a false narrative about the case that the news media kept repeating as fact. Bernie de la Rionda requested a gag order three times, but his requests were denied. In retrospect, they should have been granted.
O’Mara escalated his attack against Trayvon Martin’s character by publicizing inadmissible personal information obtained from Trayvon’s phone after prospective jurors received their summons to jury duty, thereby assuring that most of them would be exposed to extremely prejudicial, irrelevant and inadmissible evidence. In retrospect, Judge Nelson should have held him in contempt and jailed him for that misconduct.
When all is said and done, I think people will remember this case as a terrible injustice engineered by two dishonest and sadistic lawyers who gamed the system by breaking every rule in the book.

When Judge Nelson’s Frye decision went down I remember saying that Sanford, Florida, is not the epicenter of legal brilliance. But looking back, there were issues with this judge that, in my opinion, raise some flags. Just sayin’…

White Privilege: Responding to Zimmerman Verdict with Paean to the Rule of Law

Cohen begins:
In the next few hours and days you’ll likely be inundated with analysis and commentary and solemn expressions of outrage or joy about what the acquittal of George Zimmerman means – to the nation, to its rule of law, to its politics, to its racial divide, to its deadly obsession with guns, to Florida’s ALEC-infused justice system, and to probably 100 other things I can’t list off the top of my head. This is what happens when a verdict comes down in a high-profile criminal trial – when life or liberty are on the line and the country is split, and angrily so, upon the wisdom and the justice of the outcome.
We’ll never know exactly what happened on that dark, rainy night, he concludes:
And what comes next, surely, is a wrongful death civil action for money damages brought against Zimmerman by the Martin family. That means another case, and perhaps another trial, with evidentiary rules that are more relaxed than the ones we’ve just seen. And that means that a few years from now, after Martin v. Zimmerman is concluded, we’ll likely know more about what happened that night than we do today. That’s the good news. The bad news is that no matter how many times Zimmerman is hauled into court, we will never know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about what happened that terrible night.
And since we can’t know “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” his argument ends tacitly, we should accept the verdict because … well … “the rule of law” is better than the alternatives.
Except the rule of law was not better than the alternatives for Trayvon Martin, just as it wasn’t for too many young, black men in the U.S. Far too often, if you’re a young, black male and you walk too fast, or too slow, or in the wrong place, or at the wrong time, or just happen to “look suspicious” … “the rule of law” is to beg for mercy and hope you live to see the next day.
And if you don’t beg quickly enough or in quite the right way and the other person decides to kill you, then far too often “the rule of law” is that your parents get to bury you, your killer gets to walk away, and a white person gets to write a hand-wringing article about how the justice system is imperfect but it’s better than the alternatives.
And it is … if you’re white.

In a way, the not-guilty verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman for his killing of Trayvon Martin was more powerful than a guilty verdict could ever have been. It was the perfect wrenching coda to a story that illustrates just how utterly and completely our system of justice — both moral and legal — failed Martin and his family.
This is not to dispute the jury’s finding — one can intellectually rationalize the decision — as much as it is to howl at the moon, to yearn for a brighter reality for the politics around dark bodies, to raise a voice and say, this case is a rallying call, not a death dirge.
The system began to fail Martin long before that night.
The system failed him when Florida’s self-defense laws were written, allowing an aggressor to claim self-defense in the middle of an altercation — and to use deadly force in that defense — with no culpability for his role in the events that led to that point.

Holder Jr. said Monday he shares concerns about “the tragic, unnecessary shooting death” of an unarmed black teenager in Florida last year, and he vowed to pursue a federal investigation into the matter.
In a speech at the social action luncheon of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Holder pledged that the Justice Department would “continue to act in a manner that is consistent with the facts and the law” and would work to “alleviate tensions, address community concerns and promote healing” in response to the case.
“We are determined to meet division and confusion with understanding and compassion — and also with truth,” he said. “We are resolved, as you are, to combat violence involving or directed at young people, to prevent future tragedies and to deal with the underlying attitudes, mistaken beliefs and stereotypes that serve as the basis for these too common incidents. A Florida jury’s acquittal of George Zimmerman has enraged a nation, and critics are hoping to hit the Sunshine State where it could really hurt: in its coffers.
Zimmerman initially claimed Stand Your Ground as his defense in the murder of unarmed Miami Gardens teen Trayvon Martin, who was walking home from a convenience store when the neighborhood watch volunteer allegedly pursued him.
Although Zimmerman’s defense did not ultimately use Stand Your Ground, the case has put the 2005 law under a microscope with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg claiming such laws “encourage deadly confrontations by enabling people to shoot first and argue ‘justifiable homicide’ later.”
Outrage over the Zimmerman verdict has funneled into an online petition to boycott the state by withholding tourism until the controversial Stand Your Ground law is repealed:
Florida is not a safe place to take your family for vacation as long as Florida law permits a citizen to shoot or kill you for merely looking suspicious, and to do it with impunity. Boycott Florida tourism until this dangerous law is overturned. If the murder of Trayvon Martin isn’t enough to get lawmaker’s attention, maybe a loss in revenue to the state would be.
