Shame on Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell for trying to wriggle out of responsibility in the Star Scientific gifts scandal by sacrificing his wife of 37 years.
It’s painful to watch the governor’s legal team systematically tear down the reputation for good judgment of the woman whom he’s previously portrayed as his beloved partner in a storybook romance.
Such lack of chivalry hardly squares with the governor’s long-standing image as a squeaky-clean, religious family man.

Johnny Lee Gaddy, 67, said he was locked up from 1957 to 1961 for truancy. He said he was severely beaten, but in his teens became a good farm worker, hoping to get released.
Gaddy said he had heard of teens disappearing without explanation.
“I know some they said went home, but they hadn’t been here long enough to go home,” Gaddy said. “They said some others ran away or were transferred to other places. We never saw any bodies or funerals.”
John Due, father of Tananarive, said descendants and civil-rights activists who pressed the state for disclosure of what happened to the young men ran into rigid resistance from authorities for decades.
“People didn’t want to talk about it, and we found that particularly among black families,” he said. “That’s what racism does. It beats you down and you think you don’t matter, so you won’t speak up.”

Human remains believed uncovered in search at Florida boys school

The first of many to die at a Florida reform school infamous for inflicting beatings and abuse is identified in official records only as “Unknown colored boy.”
Researchers say he died in 1911. But his name, final resting place, and the reason for his early death remain a mystery.
He’s not alone.
The whereabouts of nearly two dozen others who died at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys are also unknown, researchers said.
Those who once stayed at the reform school — and were subjected to regular lashings by school officials — say many more could be buried on the property of the now-shuttered state-run school, located in Marianna, a small town in Florida’s panhandle.
“I think there’s at least 100 more bodies,” Robert Straley, who was at the school for 10 months starting in 1963, said in a telephone interview.
“From 1900 to 1940 were the most brutal years in that place. Back then, a white boy’s life wasn’t worth much and a black boy’s life wasn’t worth anything.”
A clearer view of who died at the school, and why, may soon surface. On Saturday, a team of researchers began a year-long exhumation of burial sites on the school’s property.
After one day of excavations, the team of University of South Florida researchers uncovered what they believe are human bone fragments along with cloths and pins resembling those used in burial shrouds, reported the Jackson County Floridian. Also uncovered were hinges, believed to have been used on wooden coffins.
The excavation site falls outside the boundary of what for years was the school campus’ main cemetery.

Hello, SG2. Yes, I see where there are quite a few articles out there today about the Dozier school because they started digging yesterday and news reporters were there. I just hope that those anthropologists have enough time and money to exhume all of the bodies on that land which is about 1,400 acres. The DOJ has given them a grant close to 500K. I read that some bodies were dumped into the river or stream that is on the property. Another disturbing thing that I read is that the KKK buried some bodies there too (Marianna was a KKK stronghold.) Sounds like one of those rumors that is probably true.
When I lived in Jacksonville, FL, I grew up with a kid who was sent to a “reform” school in the seventh grade. He was in my class, and he wasn’t a bad kid, maybe hyperactive. How bad could you be in a Catholic school back then or even now? So, this kid was being raised by his grandparents and they didn’t seem to want him. A few months after he got sent off I heard that he had been killed, stabbed by another kid at the school (which turns out to be a common story for some of those who were murdered.) That was the last I ever heard of him, I don’t remember there being a funeral. I’m wondering now if he was sent to Dozier and murdered. He was a sweet kid, lived in my neighborhood, and was always nice to me.
This kind of evil is incomprehensible and it’s just going to get worse. Hundreds of survivors, all of whom went separate ways, are telling the same story. Some days when I walk my dogs I pass this group of young boys, maybe 14 to 16 years old waiting for the school bus. I look at them and wonder why anyone would want to beat them to death or almost to death. But the Dozier school had in their employ men who spent decades doing just that in addition to raping them. Where did they find such evil men?

Did you see the movie “The Magdalene Sisters”?
Good morning, SG2. Yes, I saw “The Magdalene Sisters” just a couple of years ago, not when it was first released. I was horrified and spent at least a week reading about the Magdalene laundries on the Internet. At my school, we had Dominican nuns who were very stern, but I was absolutely shocked by what sadistic nuns (and priests) did to the girls who ended up in those laundries. Apparently, the nuns had quite a trade going in “selling” (via “donation”) the infants that they stole from the girls and they made a lot money on the laundries too. And now the nuns in Ireland are getting filthy rich by selling off some of their land.
Another huge scandal in Ireland from recent years involves the Irish Industrial schools that were owned by the state but run by the Catholic Church. The issues are very similar to Dozier, severe beatings, rape, and abuse.
In all of these cases, these crimes went on for a century or more. So we really have to wonder what kind of people allowed this to happen in their towns especially to children, the most vulnerable of all people. I know that Marianna was always a prison town, and still is. The best job you could get in that town was working in a prison (and still is), and people don’t worry about the inmates. In Ireland, according to what I’ve read, the priests had absolute authority because the people were mostly Catholic and they believed they needed the sacraments for salvation, only priests could administer sacraments.
So many lives destroyed and for what? To satisfy the evil desires of sadists and pedophiles. It is bone chilling horror.

Quinn’s Collapse

It’s increasingly likely that the last good day for Christine Quinn’s mayoral campaign was Monday, when she received the last of her endorsements from New York’s “big three” daily newspapers. A Quinnipiac poll on Wednesday showed her falling far behind Bill de Blasio and getting trounced in any plausible runoff. Now comes a New York Times/Siena poll showing her dropping into third place and suffering a calamitous decline in favorability.
Like the Q-poll, the new survey shows Bill de Blasio surging into a lead, albeit with 32%, which is a ways from the 40% needed to avoid a runoff. But Quinn’s odds of making or surviving a runoff are now unmistakably fading. While her viable rivals are enjoying strong favorable/unfavorable ratios (de Blasio at 53/16 and Bill Thompson at 53/16) among likely primary voters, Quinn is now underwater at 39/45. She’s doing a little bit better than Anthony Weiner (24/66), but that’s not saying much. And she has little “cushion” for improvement, since only 15% of voters say they don’t know enough about her to have an opinion (25% of respondents don’t know much about de Blasio, and 30% say the same about Thompson).
Primaries are difficult to poll or predict, but it’s beginning to look like either a de Blasio/Thompson runoff or a de Blasio win outright. Best I can tell, Quinn’s close identification with Michael Bloomberg, for which she has been pounded by her opponents, has been her achilles heel. But for whatever reason, too many New York Democrats just don’t like her at precisely the wrong time in her political career.

New Neighbor’s Agenda: White Power Takeover

The bearded man with thinning, gray-and-bleach-blond hair flapping down his neck first appeared in this tiny agricultural town last year, quietly and inconspicuously roaming the crackly dirt roads.
Nettie Ketterling thought nothing of it when he came into her bar to charge his cellphone in an outlet beneath the mounted head of a mule deer. To Kenneth Zimmerman, the man was just another customer, bringing his blue Dodge Durango in for repairs. Bobby Harper did not blink when the man appeared in front of his house and asked him if he had any land to sell. And the mayor, Ryan Schock, was simply extending a civic courtesy when he swung by the man’s house to introduce himself.
Their new neighbor, they thought, was just another person looking to get closer to the lucrative oil fields in western North Dakota known as the Bakken.
But all that changed last week.
The Southern Poverty Law Center and The Bismarck Tribune revealed that the man, Paul Craig Cobb, 61, has been buying up property in this town of 24 people in an effort to transform it into a colony for white supremacists.
In the past two years, Mr. Cobb, a longtime proselytizer for white supremacy who is wanted in Canada on charges of promoting hatred, has bought a dozen plots of land in Leith (pronounced Leeth) and has sold or transferred ownership of some of them to a couple of like-minded white nationalists.
He is using Craigslist and white power message boards to entice others in the movement to take refuge in Leith, about two hours southwest of Bismarck. On one board, he detailed his vision for the community — an enclave where residents fly “racialist” banners, where they are able to import enough “responsible hard core” white nationalists to take control of the town government, where “leftist journalists or antis” who “come and try to make trouble” will face arrest.
The revelations have riveted this community and the surrounding area, drawing a range of reactions from disgust to disbelief to curiosity.
“If that man wanted to live in Leith and be a good neighbor and be decent and not push his thoughts on the people, then he could live there,” said Arlene Wells, 82, a farmer and local historian. “But to come in and want to change everything and be the big dog — no. I don’t like bulldogs.”
It is all people are talking about, in bars and in their homes, at funerals and at church. They are poking around on the Web to read Mr. Cobb’s positions for themselves. A stream of cars creep through the streets where horses occasionally trot, their passengers hoping to catch a glimpse of some action or take a peek at Mr. Cobb’s peeling, two-story clapboard home. Sheriff’s cars, too, are making more rounds.

Liz Cheney has been on the receiving end of a typical Republican push poll, which asked Wyoming residents whether they are aware that she’s pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage. Since her father has already come out in support of her openly gay sister Mary’s right to marry her partner, it put Liz in a bit of a bind. Liz, being Liz, blundered through by issuing a boilerplate statement throwing her sister under the bus and stating her firm opposition to gay marriage [warning: Politico]. Here’s Mary’s response:
That’s just the latest chapter of the ongoing Liz Cheney Wyoming shitshow. The previous chapter was her accusation that her opponent, Mike Enzi, sponsored the poll. Enzi might be dumb, but he’s not Liz Cheney dumb. Liz’s statement just gave Enzi an opportunity to call her a dirty campaigner, and it also gave the NRSC, which is supporting Enzi, a chance to field test their latest anti-Cheney quote:

Think Progress: Poverty Has Same Effect On The Brain As Constantly Pulling All Nighters
The mental strain of living in poverty and thinking constantly about tight finances can drop a person’s IQ by as much as 13 percent, or about the equivalent of losing a night of sleep, according to a new study. It consumes so much mental energy that there is often little room to think about anything else, which leaves low-income people more susceptible to bad decisions.
One of the study’s authors, Harvard economist Sandhil Mullainathan, told the Washington Post, “Poverty is the equivalent of pulling an all-nighter. Picture yourself after an all-nighter. Being poor is like that every day.”
Poverty has other negative impacts. The chronic stress of growing up in poverty has been found to impair children’s brains, particularly in working memory. A study of veterans found that poverty is a bigger risk factor for mental illnessthan being exposed to warfare. The mental stress of being poor is also a major reason for why low-income people tend to have negative health outcomes like high blood pressure and cholesterol or elevated rates of obesity and diabetes.

President Obama Undoes Imperial Presidency, Hands Congress Its Balls Back

He’s not going to let members of Congress wiggle out of it. The president has concluded his comments on Syria from the Rose Garden, saying that while the US military stands ready to strike and while he stands ready to give the order, he is asking the people’s representatives in Congress to vote and approve such action. The ships stand ready to execute that action, and that readiness is not time-dependent. Incidentally, the timeline now in effect with the president’s announcement also gives the UN weapons inspectors time to furnish a final report, since Congress is due back in town on September 9, and the debate and the votes are scheduled soon after that.
The president could not be stronger in his own judgment, however. He was passionate, he was outraged at what the Syrian government has done by using chemical weapons to attack its own people, and he was focused on the idea that the United States – and the civilized world – had a duty to act. The president did not shy away for drawing the line on where he stands – that he has decided that a limited military air strike is that action. He called on allies to stand with us publicly, and he asked our Congress to debate and vote, but not stall.
While the people are being heard in this time frame, and while our representatives in Congress debate, let us at least afford the president the respect of the fact that he, for the first time probably in the last half century, has done for Congress what Congress has been too afraid to do for itself. A Constitutional scholar, he has decided to seek the ascent of Congress, and make Congress reclaim – and own – its Constitutional role as warmaker He has, with one speech, as our own Liberal Librarian noted, undone the imperial presidency.
In affording him that respect, let us be honest with him as he has been with us. If you are still opposed to intervention, say so, but do not use the upcoming session of Congress to debate the issue as a stalling tactic. If you want your representative to vote no, then call them and ask them to vote no, instead of dragging out the debate, if the only purpose of such dragging out is to delay action. And please do so without questioning the facts presented by our intelligence community. The president has afforded you the respect of going to your representatives for a debate and a vote, and for the UN team to put out its report. Afford him the respect that he is telling you the truth about what our intelligence has found.

Serena Williams, Sloane Stephens set for ‘epic’ clash at U.S. Open
There’s no way around it. It’s the match everyone circled when the women’s draw came out last week and it’s the one everyone wants to talk about now. Well, everyone except the two women who will actually play it.
Asked to preview her fourth-round match against Serena Williams at the U.S. Open on Sunday, Sloane Stephens kept it simple.
“As I always say, I think it will be epic,” the 20-year-old said after her third-round victory. “I’m really looking forward to it. See what happens.”
Not surprisingly, Stephens was peppered with questions about the status of her relationship with Williams, which was strained after Stephens beat her in the Australian Open quarterfinals in January. In an ESPN The Magazine story published in May, Stephens railed against Williams for icing her out after their match in Melbourne.
“She’s not said one word to me, not spoken to me, not said hi, not looked my way, not been in the same room with me since I played her in Australia,” Stephens told ESPN. “And that should tell everyone something, how she went from saying all these nice things about me to unfollowing me on Twitter.
“Like, seriously. People should know,” Stephens continued. “They think she’s so friendly and she’s so this and she’s so that — no, that’s not reality! You don’t unfollow someone on Twitter, delete them off of BlackBerry Messenger. I mean, what for? Why?”
Stephens later claimed that the conversation with a reporter was off the record. But a few weeks later another article came out, this one in TIME magazine, in which Stephens had another go at Williams, saying that the 16-time Grand Slam champion resorts to mind games to intimidate opponents.
The two have, at least publicly, tried to move forward.
“I think that’s all old news now and we’ve moved on,” Stephens said Friday. “We’re fine, so I think that’s all that matters.”
They say they’ve straightened things out and their comments about one another are dripping with positivity and praise. How things are being handled privately is a different story and one neither will discuss.
Stephens says she wouldn’t have done anything differently but took some tough lessons from the entire incident.
“Stay true to yourself, and that’s all you can do,” she said. “A lot of lessons learned. I don’t regret anything and I’m happy where I’m at right now.”

Congress, be careful what you wish for

The funny thing about a dog that chases a car? Sometimes it catches the car and has no idea what to do next.
Over the last several days, members of Congress have spoken out with a variety of opinions about U.S. policy towards Syria, but lawmakers were in broad agreement about one thing: they wanted President Obama to engage Congress on the use of military force. Few expected the White House to take the requests too seriously.
Why not? Because over the last several decades, presidents in both parties have increasingly consolidated authority over national security matters, tilting practically all power over the use of force towards the Oval Office and away from the legislative branch. Whereas the Constitution and the War Powers Act intended to serve as checks on presidential authority on military intervention abroad, there’s been a gradual (ahem) drift away from these institutional norms.
That is, until this afternoon, when President Obama stunned everyone, announcing his decision to seek “authorization” from a co-equal branch of government.
It’s one of those terrific examples of good politics and good policy. On the former, the American public clearly endorses the idea of Congress giving its approval before military strikes begin. On the latter, at the risk of putting too fine a point on this, Obama’s move away from unilateralism reflects how our constitutional, democratic system of government is supposed to work.

Identities of Officers Who Spoke to ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Filmmakers About Bin Laden Raid Are Not Public, Judge Rules

A federal judge ruled the names of the CIA agents and Navy SEAL given to “Zero Dark Thirty” filmmakers should not be released to a government watchdog organization because they are not publicly known, the opinion said.
Judicial Watch, Inc., filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency, claiming the government unfairly withheld the names of four CIA Agents and one Navy SEAL from documents that detailed communications between governmental agencies and the filmmakers behind “Zero Dark Thirty,” according to court documents.
The non-partisan educational foundation initially filed a Freedom of Information Act request to gain access to recorded conversations the CIA and the Defense Department had with the film’s director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal in August 2011, court documents said.

House Republicans Refuse to Come Back Early from Vacation to Discuss Syria
Nothing gets in the way of the Republican House avoiding work. Not even voting on military action in Syria.
House leaders issued a statement saying that “serious, substantive” questions were being raised regarding Syria and they are so glad that the President is asking them to vote because this is so important, constitution, blah blah – oh, and they are going to take the measure up on September 9th, which is another way of saying they are not coming back early from vacaction for this “serious, substantive” matter.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) today issued the following joint statement.
“Under the Constitution, the responsibility to declare war lies with Congress. We are glad the president is seeking authorization for any military action in Syria in response to serious, substantive questions being raised. Obama Phone Call Leads Judge To Release Father Of 1963 Ala. Church Bombing Victim

A former Alabama politician whose daughter died in a racist church bombing in 1963 was released from a prison medical facility Thursday after a judge sided with an Obama administration call to free him.
Chris McNair was released from prison hours after U.S. District Judge Lynwood Smith issued her ruling, said Peggy Sanford, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney in Birmingham.
The U.S. Justice Department had sought the release of the 87-year-old McNair on grounds of compassion.
In her ruling, Smith said McNair, who was incarcerated at a federal prison medical center in Rochester, Minn., should be released as soon as his health allowed and travel arrangements could be made.
McNair was part of the scandal-plagued Jefferson County Commission that made deals resulting in a then-record municipal bankruptcy over more than $4 billion in debts.
The administration’s request for leniency asked a judge to reduce McNair’s five-year sentence to the time he has served since entering prison in 2011.
The request said McNair’s “serious and declining health problems are extraordinary and compelling reasons” warranting his release, but it did not mention his link to one of the most infamous crimes of the civil rights era.
McNair is the father of Denise McNair, one of the four black girls killed when Ku Klux Klansmen bombed the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham in 1963. A bell from the landmark church was rung at the Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday during commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

BEAUTIFUL NEWS: Robin Roberts Returns To ‘Good Morning America’ Full Time!

It seems like only yesterday that we bid farewell to Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America,” but it’s been a full year. The beautiful and inspiring anchor is set to make her full time comeback! Roberts came back to the show earlier this year, but is now back five days a week!
“The day after Labor Day, I’ll be back to a five-day a week schedule,” Roberts explained. “I’m looking forward to it. I want to get back to my full life.
Roberts revealed, “I’m really at peace now. I’m not as frightened. I feel 90 percent of myself again, and that’s a great feeling.” September 20th marks a full year since Roberts’ bone marrow transplant and she’s apparently feeling closer to her old self!
Recently getting back from a Maui vacation with a close group of friends, Roberts used that time to renew and reflect and called the trip meaningful. “To be able to feel stronger and a little more active, it’s great to feel that way again,” Roberts said of her trip.

Artist who painted Putin in lingerie seeking asylum in France
Konstantin Altunin fled to Paris after police seized his racy painting of the Russian president and prime minister

Russian artist Konstantin Altunin, who made international headlines this week after police seized his painting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in women’s underwear, is seeking asylum in France.
The 45-year-old fled Russia on Tuesday night after police raided an art gallery in the northwestern city of Saint Petersburg and confiscated various works, including Altunin’s painting depicting Putin in a pink nightie and Medvedev in a bra and knickers.
Altunin fears he would be arrested if he returned to Russia.

A New Low: How the Tea Party Trolled Tim Scott Into Selling Himself Out

Senator Tim Scott, are you listening?
Way Back When the thought of having an African American man elected as a representative of your state would get as many hearty laughs as an episode of the Andy Griffith Show. Way Back When you would have to eat your lunch at separate lunch counters. Way Back When you would have to drink out of a separate water fountain. Way Back When you would attend inferior schools with outdated textbooks and materials. Way Back When people were actively trying to put systems in place to prevent you from participating in a representative democracy.
Well, I guess that last one doesn’t seem too far fetched, actually.
This past week, Senator Tim Scott failed miserably at the Way Back When game. As the first African-American senator from the south since 1881 and the first African-American representative from South Carolina since 1897, he, along with other prominent members of the Republican Party, received an invitation to attend the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. As someone who grew up in poverty, but was able to make something of himself via his hard work and a dedicated mother working 16-hour days, it seemed only natural that Scott would be in attendance for the historical event.
Unfortunately, Tim Scott was nowhere to be found.
As news media began to comment on the clear lack of Conservative presence at the event, the right wing spin machine quickly went to work claiming that the event was some liberal invite only and that no Conservatives were invited. Scott, entering the public eye for his conspicuous absence, also claimed that he too didn’t receive an invite. However, news media quickly confirmed that Scott, along with the entire Republican Congressional caucus, did, in fact, receive invites to the event but declined. Some, like Eric Cantor, were too busy dealing with oil lobbyists. Others, like Tim Scott ran into the problem of having to make a decision fearing the wrath of his constituency: The Tea Party.
And we all know how the Tea Party feels about Black folk.
Yes, herein lies the problem for Scott, the interim senator from the Palmetto State. As someone who was appointed by Tea Party darling Nikki Haley, Scott knows that it was Tea Party support that helped him become the replacement for departing senator Jim DeMint in 2011. He owes his allegiance to a group of people who see him as a second class citizen, a feel-good story that his constituents use to convince themselves they aren’t inherently racist. However, for most of them, people with the complexion of Scott are not only scary, but also inferior. The majority of them openly wish that Way Back When had never ended.
This is the deal with the devil that Scott has made. Rather than pay tribute to the man who enabled him to become a representative and then a senator, Scott has to bow to the Tea Party powers that be or else face the threat of being primaried, most likely by someone who needs a little more suntan lotion. Scott, like every single member of his party, chose not to attend the event for fear of alienating his base of Tea Party voters. This left an entire political party absent from a moving tribute to one of the most influential figures of the last century.

Did you watch Andrea Mitchell today? Oh, boy. Did she ever get a case of teh sad after President Obama’s address in the Rose Garden. She – and notably, this Ret. Col. Jack Jacobs, commentator on MSNBC – had a total meltdown. Together, Mrs. Greenspan and Mr. Jacobs cooked up theories ranging from an Obama-Kerry discord to a “reversal” that Mitchell kept referring to on the part of the president, to executive weakness to stabbing the Syrian rebels in the back.
Jacobs was beside himself that for some bizarre reason, John Kerry could no longer be trusted by world leaders as speaking for the president (because somehow, some way, Jacobs imagined a part of Kerry’s speech yesterday where he said that the president had made up his mind to order a strike without Congress’ buy-in, though Kerry actually said just the opposite) Mitchell a potshot at the president for going golfing after making the speech. Yeah, how dare that mulatto go golfing after messing up all my war reporting plans?
