Subpoenas are not supposed to be partisan toys

    11/08/13 11:15 AM
    By Steve Benen

The Obama administration announced this week that it’s poised to publicly release the preliminary enrollment numbers for the Affordable Care Act. Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee issued a subpoena to obtain the exact same information that the White House has already said it will soon publish. So why bother with a subpoena? That’s unclear.

Yesterday, House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) announced a new subpoena as part of his peculiar interest in the IRS “controversy” from six months ago. Why issue another subpoena in a fake scandal that’s already been discredited? That’s unclear, too.

And then there’s Republicans’ interest in Todd Park.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is threatening to subpoena a key ObamaCare official who declined to attend a hearing on the law’s rollout next week.

Issa wrote Thursday that he may legally compel Todd Park, the chief technology officer at the White House, to testify if Park does not agree to appear on his own. “Your role in the development and rollout of HealthCare.gov … uniquely positions you to provide testimony that will be valuable for both Congress and the public,” Issa wrote in a letter to Park.

In this case, Park and administration officials have said he’ll gladly testify in early December – when he’s a little less busy. Issa said yesterday that unless Park stops working and allows himself to be publicly berated by the committee in November, Issa will consider this a “refusal” to testify, which will spark a subpoena – for someone who’s already volunteered to answer the committee’s questions.

At a certain point, the House Republicans’ approach to oversight needs to be called out for what it is: farcical. I’m all for accountability and oversight – it’s partly why Congress exists – but there’s nothing responsible about casually throwing around subpoenas as if they’re political toys.

This is especially interesting given Issa’s recent past. A Democratic source emailed last night to note that in April 2007, the House Oversight Committee demanded testimony from then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, when Rice said she was busy. Issa said at the time that “the inappropriateness of hauling the secretary of state … out of the performance of her job is what we’re objecting to.”

But hauling the White House’s chief technology officer out of the performance of his job is fine? After he’s already volunteered to testify in four weeks?

Man sues wife after she gives him ‘ugly’ baby
    By David K. Li

A court in northern China has sided with an angry ex-husband, who sued his estranged wife for marrying him without disclosing her previous plastic surgeries. Fuming hubby Feng Jian only found out about her wife’s scalpel-aided touch-ups after she gave birth to their baby daughter who was “ugly beyond description,” according to court papers cited by the Sina News.

Feng initially suspected his wife of having an affair. But after DNA tests proved he was the ugly duckling’s biological dad, she fessed up to having done $100,000 worth of cosmetic surgeries before they met. A court ordered her to pay him $120,000 for his claims of marriage under false pretenses.

    Supply Meets Demand on Benghazi!

    By Ed Kilgore

As you may be aware, the recent Benghazi! story on 60 Minutes is unraveling so completely that the reporter who developed it is allowing as how she mistakenly relied on a “witness” who turned out to be anything but.

But how exactly did this happen? Well, Digby says pretty much everything there is to say about the missed opportunities to ask obvious questions, and the compromised relationship between CBS and its dubious, book-promoting “source.” And she even identifies a motive: the reporter, Lara Logan, has long expressed righteous anger that the killing of Ambassador Chris Stevens hasn’t been avenged. So Logan had a personal agenda that nicely merged with her personal interest in getting a big “scoop.”

In the way that these things tend to happen, Lara Logan brought the supply and Lindsey Graham brought the demand and a bill of goods were sold. Graham and other Republicans, of course, can now simply argue the dubious report “raised questions,” and that’s all they need for more wallowing in the “story.” An apology from their supplier isn’t enough.

For Help on Iran, Netanyahu Must Look to West Bank
By Jeffrey Goldberg Nov 7, 2013 4:12 PM CT

So why are the prime minister’s complaints being ignored? Two reasons. The first reason is that U.S. President Barack Obama has him boxed in. Netanyahu can’t launch a unilateral strike on Iran now that the U.S. is actively negotiating with its leaders. That would just be outre. So Netanyahu is in a time-out of sorts — and therefore semi-marginalized.

The second reason is one Netanyahu, so far at least, has refused to comprehend. His unwillingness to permanently freeze settlement growth on the West Bank, to make the sort of grand gesture toward the Palestinians that would advance the peace process, has caused even those in Washington and Europe who are sympathetic to his stance on Iran to write him off as generally immovable and irrational.

    Iran Deal Imminent?
    By Ed Kilgore

The likelihood of a deal is underlined by Bibi Netanyahu’s immediate attack on it. Israel’s policy, of course, is that sanctions need to remain in place until Iran’s nuclear capability is eliminated, a position which treats halts in the nuclear program as largely irrelevant.

Those in the U.S., including most of the Republican Party, who take a similar position won’t greet a deal positively, and in any event, many GOP foreign policy hawks don’t support any activity towards Iran unless it’s aimed at regime change. But for the rest of us, it’s a positive step.

Jill Scott Tapped To Play James Brown’s Wife In Biopic ‘Get On Up’
    Nov 8, 2013
    By Shamika Sanders, Staff Writer

Jill Scott has proven herself as an artist whose music will transcend generations and now she has her sights on set on conquering the film industry. After showing leadership qualities as “Gail” in the movie “Baggage Claim”), it’s no surprise that Jilly from Philly was hand-picked to play one of James Brown’s wives in the upcoming biopic “Get On Up.” According to THR, the role was written specifically for Scott.

The Tate Taylor-directed movie chronicles James’ rise to the “The Godfather of Soul” and the sometimes turbulent behavior: drug addiction, domestic violence and financial struggle that seemed to plague his career. “Get On Up” is stacked with talented thespians. Brown will be played by “42″ star Chadwick Boseman and Taylor reunites with the leading ladies from “The Help,” Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer and Academy Award nominee Viola Davis.

So far, “Get On Up” is looking at an Oct. 17, 2014, release. We think Jill is going to nail it!

The Pivotal, Behind-the-Scenes Story of How the “Game Change” Guys Get Sources to Talk
    BY MARC TRACY

…Jim Manley, at the time Reid’s senior communications advisor, rarely approved such interviews, in part because his prickly boss disliked them. But Manley had been hearing things. During the run-up to the primary contest between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, Reid had stayed publicly, strenuously neutral. Now someone in the Obama White House had told Halperin that all the way back in the summer of 2006, Reid had quietly encouraged then-Sen. Obama to run for president. Manley wanted Reid to hear the rumor for himself and give his own version of events. The session would be on deep-background—reporter-speak for a conversation from which the general substance is fair game, but no quotes or information may be attributed to the source. After it was over, Manley says, he followed Heilemann and Halperin outside Reid’s office and received their reassurance that they wouldn’t quote Reid.

Which is why Manley was not pleased when Game Change included this passage on Reid’s encouragement of Obama’s run:

[Reid] was wowed by Obama’s oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama—a “light-skinned” African American “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,” as he later put it privately.

If Manley is to be believed—and most people I spoke to believe him—the inflammatory comments were not something that Reid “later put … privately” so much as said in the original, deep-background interview that Heilemann and Halperin decided to go ahead and use.

Walmart Is Trying to Block Workers’ Disability Benefits

Last week, amidst a deluge of criticism about Walmart’s poverty-level wages, the retail giant announced promotions for 25,000 of its roughly 1.3 million US employees. But although Walmart has raised pay for some of its employees, it is simultaneously fighting to convince the Supreme Court to allow it to more easily avoid paying disability benefits.[….]

In the Heimeshoff case, the Supreme Court could very well decide that the matter should instead be resolved by the Department of Labor or individual state legislatures. Then again, the high court could take a cue from its 2011 decision in Walmart v. Dukes. In that case, the Supreme Court allowed Walmart to block its female workers’ sex discrimination claims by changing the rules governing class action lawsuits.

Barneys Racist Culture Deeply Ingrained In Store, Insiders Say
    Posted: 11/07/2013 7:27 am EST | Updated: 11/07/2013 6:13 pm EST

On the sales floor at the Madison Avenue flagship store of Barneys
New York, salespeople would joke about customers who, in their view,
    didn’t belong.

Often, those jokes would be aimed at the black customers, a former sales associate at the store told The Huffington Post.

The former employee, who spoke on condition she not be named for fear of jeopardizing her career in the industry, said she heard sales staff and security repeatedly rip on black shoppers: “Their card is probably not going to go through,” they’d say. “I don’t know why they come in here and want to try stuff on that they know they’re not going to buy.”

“If a black person comes in with a sweatshirt or sneakers, some of the
white sales associates would be on the floor saying: ‘Why are they even here? They’re probably going to scam,'” said the former associate, who is black and worked at the store in 2012 and 2013. “They would say this stuff in front of me. Sometimes I would just walk away, and sometimes I would say, ‘You never know.'”

George W. Bush to Raise Money for Group That Converts Jews to Bring About Second Coming of Christ

The former president follows in the footsteps of Glenn Beck, who addressed the group last year.
—By Sarah Posner-| Thu Nov. 7, 2013 11:51 AM PST

Next week, former President George W. Bush is scheduled to keynote a fundraiser in Irving, Texas, for the Messianic Jewish Bible Institute, a group that trains people in the United States, Israel, and around the world to convince Jews to accept Jesus as the Messiah. The organization’s goal: to “restore” Israel and the Jews and bring about about the second coming of Christ.

Messianic Jews have long been controversial for Jews of all major denominations, who object to their proselytizing efforts and their message that salvation by Jesus is consistent with Jewish theology. Last year, Abraham Foxman, president of the Anti-Defamation League, told Politico that former Sen. Rick Santorum’s appearance at an event hosted by another Messianic Jewish organization, the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America, was “insensitive and offensive.”

And Commentary magazine, which bills itself as a “conservative American journal of politics, Judaism, social and cultural issues,” noted, “it must be understood that the visceral distaste that the overwhelming majority of Jews have for the Messianics is not to be taken lightly.” Many Messianic Jews are Christians who have adopted aspects of Jewish ritual observance; others are Jews who share the Christian belief that Jesus is the Messiah.

Shutdown cost $2 billion in lost federal employee productivity, White House says

October’s 16-day partial shutdown of the federal government cost taxpayers about $2 billion in lost productivity from 850,000 furloughed employees, the White House budget office said Thursday in a report aimed at showing the economic toll of the gridlock in Congress.

Three weeks after the government reopened, ”We believe it was important to have in one place the articulated impact of the shutdown,” Sylvia Mathews Burwell, head of the Office of Management and Budget, said in a conference call with reporters.

She described a cascade of “negative ramifications on a number of fronts” from closing the government Oct.1, from $500 million in lost local spending by visitors to closed national parks to $1.9 billion in delayed deliveries of 156 aircraft when the Federal Aviation Administration could not register them.

Old White Guy Discovers Slavery Was Bad . . . in 2013

Posted by Elon James White at 6:58 pm .

    .

Stop the presses everyone! Washington Post columnist and seasoned journalist, Richard Cohen has a confession to make, After watching 12 Years a Slave, Cohen learned that slavery was . . . wait for it . . . really, really bad!

I sometimes think I have spent years unlearning what I learned earlier in my life. For instance, it was not George A. Custer who was attacked at the Little Bighorn. It was Custer — in a bad career move — who attacked the Indians. Much more important, slavery was not a benign institution in which mostly benevolent whites owned innocent and grateful blacks. Slavery was a lifetime’s condemnation to an often violent hell in which people were deprived of life, liberty and, too often, their own children. Happiness could not be pursued after that.

So, all this time you thought that Negroes were complaining about the golden years when we got to lounge around plantations, singing songs and perfecting our fried chicken recipes? Have you never heard of the movie Roots? Or Amistad? Hell, Glory?Even pop culture knows that Negroes were happy during slavery.

What were they using to immunize white kids in the 1940s, white privilege?

    Oh wait.

Icarus and the Burning Truth: Scandal Episode 306 Recap

    [ 6 ] November 8, 2013 | Luvvie

Episode 6 of season 3 of Scandal was called Icarus. I’m a fan of Greek Mythology and I immediately recalled the story of the man whose father created wings so he could fly but he was warned not to get too high. He kept flying higher and higher and he got too close to the sun so the wax on the wings melted so he fell and drowned into the sea. I assumed it’d mean someone would get too close to the truth on Operation Remington and get burned.

Mama Memories – In a black and white scene from the past, little Olivia (with glasses) is at the kitchen table. Her mom (filmed in a blur) is getting ready to leave, so she hugs her (with what seemed like finality) and bounced. Peep the white blazer too.
