POTUS Statement:

The Senate is nearing a potential showdown on curbing the power that the Republican minority has to block President Barack Obama’s nominations, as Democrats edge toward muscling a rewrite of filibuster rules through the chamber. Reid was expected to force a vote as soon as Thursday on requiring only 51 votes to end filibusters, or delaying tactics, against nominees for high-level judgeships and agency officials. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and nem to GOP OBSTRUCTIONISM:
The Democratic-controlled Senate today voted to invoke the so-called nuclear option out of frustration over Republicans who have been blocking President Barack Obama’s nominees.
The controversial move is a rules change that could make a partisan environment even more divisive because it takes away the right for the Senate’s minority party to filibuster.
Under the old rules it took 60 votes to break a filibuster. The change now allows most filibusters of Obama nominees to be stopped with 51 votes — a simple Senate majority.
“It’s time to change the Senate, before this institution becomes obsolete,” he said.
His Republican counterpart, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, accused Democrats of exercising raw power, and said they would regret it when political fortunes switched.
OH NOEZ! it’s a POWER GRAB! WHATEVS, FOLKS. 2014’s going to be a barn-burner. We need to take the HOUSE, MAINTAIN & ADD to SENATE.
WASSAMATTU, MCTURTLE?
Senate Dems Just Went Nuclear and Changed the Filibuster. Here’s Why.

Democrats were forced to go ‘nuclear’ at last
By Eugene Robinson, Published: November 21
Way to nuke ’em, Harry.
It was time — actually, long past time — for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to invoke the “nuclear option” and ask his colleagues to change the Senate’s rules. This isn’t about partisan politics. It’s about making what has been called “the world’s greatest deliberative body” function the way the Framers of the Constitution intended.

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal: Republicans must shed image as ‘party of no’
http://ow.ly/r3x81
Republican governors’ leader Bobby Jindal turned on his party’s national leadership on Wednesday, calling on the GOP to suggest alternative ideas for healthcare and immigration reform rather than simply defining itself as the “party of no”.
Amid signs of a growing backlash among Republican moderates since the failed government shutdown and the landslide re-election of centrist New Jersey governor Chris Christie, Jindal opened the annual conference of governors in Arizona with a stark warning to the Tea Party-dominated House of Representatives.
“We no longer want to outsource our brand management to the folks in DC,” said the governor of Louisiana. “Too often in Washington, we are defined as the party of no. Too often we’re defined by what we’re against. We need to do a better job as a party of defining what we are for.”
Memo to Jindal: START WITH THE STATE OF LOUISIANA. Bye now!

Obama supports Senate’s nuclear option, rule change
Updated 2:24 p.m. ET
Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama said Thursday afternoon he supports the Senate Democrats’ decision to change filibuster rules to make it easier to approve judicial appointments.
He cited what he said has been, over the past five years, “an unprecedented pattern of obstruction in Congress.”
“A deliberate and determined effort to obstruct everything, no matter what the merits, just to re-fight the results of an election is not normal, and for the sake of future generations, it cannot become normal,” he said.

The Nuclear Winter Has Begun
by BooMan

It took all morning and part of the afternoon, but the U.S. Senate has officially changed the rules so that nominations (not including to the Supreme Court) can get cloture with the support of 50 senators (with the vice-president breaking a tie) rather than the 60 senators that have been required previously. The final vote was 52-48, with Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI), Mark Pryor (D-AR), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) joining with a unanimous Republican opposition to the change.
This was an unfortunate but necessary move by Harry Reid. If the filibuster has any legitimate purpose, it is for lifetime appointments. I think it is safe to say that women’s reproductive rights are less safe as a result of this change in the rules, but ultimately it probably won’t make much of a difference. The Democrats can now nominate and confirm more liberal judges, and the Republicans almost definitely would have changed the rules if they found one of their nominees blocked in the future.
Our job just got a little more urgent. We cannot lose control of the Senate and we must win the next two presidential elections, at a minimum, or we will see women’s rights rolled back.
Yet, I still applaud the Democrats for standing up for themselves and for the power of the Executive Branch to get votes on their nominees. Good for them. It was a long time coming.
Comity is dead. Long live comity

A brief History of Senate filibuster fight
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2013/11/21/a-brief-history-of-the-senate-filibuster-fight/
President Obama voices support for filibuster rules change
In an appearance at the daily White House press briefing, President Obama said he supported the filibuster rules changes voted on in the Senate, saying that the Republican pattern of obstruction of his judicial nominations “is not normal … and has harmed our economy, and it’s been harmful to our democracy.” The changes will mean that most judicial nominations can be approved with a simple majority rather than a 60-vote supermajority.
“Enough is enough,” Obama said.

The Wax Turtle (McConnell) needs to worry about being re-elected next year.
He has at least one primary Tea Party challenger and the Democrat Allison Grimes is within the margin of error for the general.
