Saturday Open Thread

Christmas Candles 53Do You Hear What I Hear?“ is a Christmas song written in October 1962 with lyrics by Noël Regney and music by Gloria Shayne Baker.[1] The pair were married at the time, and wrote it as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis.[2] It has sold tens of millions of copies and has been covered by hundreds of artists.[2]

Noel Regney wrote the lyrics for the song, while Gloria Shayne Baker composed the Christmas carol‘s music in October 1962.[2] This was an unusual arrangement for the two writers. Usually it was Baker who wrote the lyrics for their songs while Regney composed the music, as they did when they wrote a song based on the classic children’s song “Rain Rain Go Away“.

The People’s View: How Has Barack Obama Disappointed YOU in 2013? – Outrage From A Parallel Reality

On Wednesday, NPR’s Liz Halloran told us how Barack Obama has disappointed liberals in 2013, how this was the year of disappointing the liberal base. Immediately, her comment section filled with Lefties panting and falling over themselves to declare how correct she is. And really, when hasn’t he, if you ask whoever this ever illusive “liberal base” is. So disappointing. How disappointing has Obama been to his liberal base? Oh, let me count the ways.

…. I implore you, liberals. Stick to your gut feelings. Stick to truthiness. Even if a preponderance of the evidence points to 2013 being a remarkably liberal year for President Obama and his administration, stick your head in the sand and yell about the NSA and drones. You don’t need evidence, facts, or data. All you need is a conservative columnist yanking your chain so you can lose your
    sh*t.

‘Duck Dynasty’ Fallout: GLAAD Reeling From Biggest Backlash in Years, Says Rep

In the fallout over Wednesday’s suspension of “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson by A&E for anti-gay and racist remarks, GLAAD is experiencing record levels of backlash.

“In the five-and-a-half years I’ve worked at GLAAD, I’ve never received so many violently angry phone calls and social media posts attacking GLAAD for us speaking out against these comments,” the media watchdog organization’s vice president of communications Rich Ferraro told TheWrap.

He said those reactions range from those who simply believe as Robertson believes to those who feel that GLAAD and A&E’s actions limit the reality star’s free speech.

Morning Feature – A Year of Media Failure, Part III: Fire Somebody … Except Us (Non-Cynical Saturday)

on Fournier was one of many Beltway journalists calling for President Obama to fire someone in the wake of the initial Healthcare.gov failures. But what would it take to get failing Beltway journalists fired? (More)

A Year of Media Failure, Part III: Fire Somebody … Except Us (Non-Cynical Saturday)

This week Morning Feature looks at the year’s media failures. Thursday we began with ScandalFest 2013, a series of falsely-hyped and long-debunked partisan attacks, and two policy disputes that the media reported as “scandals.” Yesterday we saw broken news, from shoddy reporting on the Boston Marathon bombing investigation to shoddier reporting on the Healthcare.gov website. Today we conclude with how the media claim a mission to hold government accountable, while largely rejecting accountability for themselves.

  6. PR Exec Takes Down Twitter Account After Onslaught of Criticism, Mockery for AIDS Joke

    http://www.mediaite.com/online/pr-exec-takes-down-twitter-account-after-onslaught-of-criticism-mockery-for-aids-joke/

Practically everyone on Twitter Friday was all over Justine Sacco, a PR director for IAC, for her unbelievably offensive tweet about AIDS and white people. And, presumably, as soon as she got off the plane and noticed what hell had rained down upon her, she took down her Twitter account.

I don’t own a Twitter account, but I understand that Black folks dominate when it comes to usage. Don’t bring a toothpick to talk about black folks/POC on this mode of meda.

You can say whatever you want.. you know first amendments and all that good stuff, but DO EXPECT to be taken to the woodshed. We’re not in 1800s anymore. Remember, and never forget that we’re protected under the 1st AMENDMENT too, MOFOS!

    My childhood Christmas memory:

Every Christmas my parents would turn on the music box in this church that you see in the photo here. When the three of us children heard it playing “Silent Night”, we would rush down the stairway into our living room’s Christmas wonderland!

It warms my heart every year to bring out this church and place it next to our tree :)

  9. PR officer Justine Sacco’s Aids comment causes twitter storm

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-25475862#TWEET991512

A US public relations executive has provoked a storm of online protest for writing a Twitter comment about Aids in Africa.

Justine Sacco, who works for the media company IAC, wrote: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get Aids. Just kidding. I’m white!”

Ms Sacco’s account has now been deleted.

IAC responded by saying the “outrageous, offensive comment” did not reflect the company’s views and values.

“Unfortunately, the employee in question is unreachable on an international flight, but this is a very serious matter and we are taking appropriate action,” the IAC said in a statement to the media blog Valleywag.

IAC is the parent company of Match.com, The Daily Beast, Dictionary.com and BlackPeopleMeet.com, a dating site for African-Americans.

Did y’all see Justine Sacco’s tweet? She underestimated #blacktwitter.
