The Staten Island Public Defender’s Office says Eric Garner, the man who died in police custody last week, felt harassed by police.
And now, his case is raising questions about how some officers do their job.
Video from the scene appears to show plainclothes officer Daniel Pantaleo putting Garner in a chokehold while arresting him for allegedly selling cigarettes illegally.
Garner, an asthmatic Staten Island man who was married with six children, can be heard saying he can’t breathe. He died of cardiac arrest.
Before his death, the Legal Aid Society had been representing Garner in three low-level cases. Now the public defender’s office says it has received numerous complaints of instances where police on Staten Island used excessive force when responding to low-level crimes.
“The officers alleged that he was resisting them, but the client stated that he was not. And there was video tape showing that the officers again threw him down to the ground, striking him with a baton,” said Christopher Pisciotta of the Legal Aid Society.
A candlelight vigil is planned for Garner tonight.
And now an internal police report on the incident has come to light.
But according to the Daily News, an NYPD report prepared right after Garner’s death downplays the incident.
In the report, officers don’t mention a chokehold and say Garner “did not appear to be in great distress.”
Another officer says Garner’s condition did not seem serious and did not appear to get worse.
On another video posted on YouTube, Pantaleo is seen several minutes later, waving at the camera. Neither video shows anyone attempting to give Garner medical care before EMS workers arrive.
Four EMTs who work for Richmond University Medical Center have now been suspended.

Alfred Wright’s body was found half naked and mutilated in woodland 18 days after witnesses claim the 28-year-old ‘ran off’ from a store after his truck broke down in Hemphill, Texas.
Police called off search after four days and claimed his death was ‘classic’ behavior of a meth addict. Alfred’s family claim the Sheriff said the search was getting in the way of his hunting.
The state autopsy found ‘no sign of trauma’ on his body from which his tongue, left ear and eyes were missing and his throat cut.
But his devastated family believe the married father-of-three and brother of Savion Wright, American Idol finalist, was victim of a ‘hate crime’ and are claiming a cover-up.
A second pathologist found ‘high index of suspicion of homicide’.
Alfred has been romantically linked daughter of sheriff investigating death. She denies it.
Such is the frenzied climate of suspicion and rumor that even a silver dime found close to Alfred’s body has led some, including his family, to believe it was placed there deliberately.

The older brother of Season 13 American Idol finalist Savion Wright, 21, Alfred was found dead on 25 November 2013 – face down in the Texas mud on the outskirts of the small town of Hemphill.
He had been missing for 18 days.
His clothes and possessions were scattered in nearby brush and snagged on barbed wire fencing.
His left ear was missing, his tongue cut or torn out, his eyes gouged out and his throat slit.
Since then, his family have driven the case beyond their hometown of Jasper where he lived with wife Lauren and their two sons, to national attention.

Judge to hear Dunn’s motion to delay sentencing hearing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A judge plans to listen to several defense motions ahead of Michael Dunn’s scheduled sentencing hearing.
The State Attorneys Office tells Action News the motions hearing is set for March 10.
Attorney Cory Strolla asked the court for a continuance Tuesday, citing a lack of time to prepare for sentencing while awaiting a possible new trial on first-degree murder charges. A jury deadlocked on that charge while convicting him on three counts of attempted murder and firing deadly missiles after the shooting of 17-year-old Jordan Davis.
Thursday, the court granted Strolla’s request for the state to make a final payment to a private investigator.
There will be a status hearing in the case has also been set for March 3.
The sentencing hearing remains set for March 24.
Local “Stand Your Ground” march scheduled for March 10th

Several religious figures in the community are teaming up to hold a march, focusing on the “Stand Your Ground” law in March.
A rally and prayer vigil will take place at the Capitol. The Reverend Al Sharpton and The National Action Network are expected to attend.
The “Stand Your Ground” has taken the spotlight in several high profile cases in Florida where several people have been accused of killing due to self defense.

The defense attorney for Michael Dunn has filed a motion asking the judge to delay his sentencing on four felony counts connected to the Nov. 23, 2012, shooting into the SUV that killed Jordan Davis.

Sabine County District Attorney Kevin Dutton recused himself from the Alfred Wright case and turned it over to the Texas Attorney General who turned it down stating:
“Investigative involvement by this office is not appropriate at this time.”

Call for justice for Jasper man who had throat slit, tongue cut out, eyes gouged
The Houston Forward Times (HFT) has been extensively covering the Alfred Wright murder case and cover-up from the beginning and was on hand this past Saturday for two events in Jasper, Texas, and Hemphill, Texas, this past weekend.
Several new major developments have occurred since the family demanded that Sherriff Tom Maddox, Texas Ranger Danny Young and the Sabine County Sherriff’s Department be investigated for their role in what they believe has been a massive cover-up. According to family members, no law enforcement officials have interviewed any of Wright’s family members; the search party members who located and found his body; his friends or closest associates; and have yet to even get prints from his truck that had stalled on the day of his disappearance.
The family met with U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), for over three hours to request she help get U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the U.S. Department of Justice and its Civil Rights and FBI units to take over the investigation. The Justice Department decided to take over the case, after receiving a letter from Congresswoman Jackson Lee, who is a senior member of the House Judiciary and Homeland Security Committees.
Since that announcement by the Justice Department, Sabine County District Attorney J. Kevin Dutton, who had been visibly absent concerning the Wright case, was asked to recuse himself to “avoid any appearance of impropriety” in the face of “allegations against the sheriff,” who is a friend, according to a statement from Dutton’s office.
Dutton then turned the case over to the Texas attorney general, who turned it down, saying, “Investigative involvement by this office is not appropriate at this time.”
On Saturday, a $30,000 reward was announced that is being offered for information leading to charges and a conviction in the death of Wright, 28, who was reported missing on Nov. 7, 2013. His body was later found by a volunteer search group nearly three weeks after he went missing.
The Wright family requested that an independent second autopsy be performed after authorities released a preliminary autopsy report on Wright, stating that his body only had shallow puncture wounds and that there was no evidence of severe trauma or foul play. That independent second autopsy, performed by Houston forensic pathologist Lee Ann Grossberg, revealed that Wright had his eyes were gouged out, tongue cut out, throat slashed, several teeth knocked out, an ear cut off and many more things to show that foul play was indeed involved. The official autopsy, released by the medical examiner, did not reveal any of the findings that the second autopsy produced, which is what prompted the family to seek help from Congresswoman Jackson Lee and the Justice Department.
