Beyond 12 Years a Slave: 8 More Books We Want to See on the Big Screen
Solomon Northup’s story deserved a Hollywood ending. But there are other black tales that would make great movies.

Solomon Northup’s harrowing story, 12 Years a Slave, was deserving of the silver screen and the accolades that followed. But there are books by black authors, like Tananarive Due, Octavia Butler and Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie, that tell other stories, beyond the whips and chains of slavery, that Hollywood should consider bringing to the big screen.
1. The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, by Frederick Douglass
2. American Cocktail: A “Colored Girl” in the World, by Anita Reynolds
3. Wild Seed, by Octavia E. Butler
4. My Soul to Keep, by Tananarive Due
5. Shackling Water, by Adam Mansbach
6. Dust on the Shoes, by Patricia Barbee
7. The Darkest Child, by Delores Phillips
8. Americanah, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

I’d like to see Kindred by Octavia Butler also made into a film.
Annie’s Black Now. Get Over It
The backlash over the casting of Quvenzhané Wallis has already begun.
“The sun will come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, there’ll be sun.”
The words and the tune are familiar, but the decidedly hip-hop twist belies a completely different story: that of the orphan Annie, who, in 2014, just happens to be black.
On Wednesday the world was given a sneak peek at the new Annie—starring Oscar-nominated child star Quvenzhané Wallis and the ever talented Jamie Foxx—as the first trailer hit the Internet. The 2:30-minute clip shows a modern spin on the beloved tale of the mistreated orphan who went on to be adopted by one of the world’s richest men. Featured are the streets of Harlem and a mayoral campaign, as well as revamped versions of the classic songs.
What will tomorrow bring?” The trailer asks its audience.
What would be truly remarkable and truly a sign of that “tomorrow”—to this writer, at least—is if a black Annie didn’t cause a stir within social media. And if a black Annie (or an Annie of any race) was just normal enough that no one even batted an eyelash about the details.
But predictably, Quvenzhané’s decided lack of red in her Afro and obvious blackness is causing a stir in social media

Senate Aide: It’s ‘Impossible’ to Get Obama’s Black Nominees Past Senate Republicans
A Senate source tells The Root that African Americans are held to a double standard in the Senate confirmation process.
By: Keli Goff
Posted: March 7 2014 10:09 AM
On Wednesday the U.S. Senate voted 47-52 to reject President Barack Obama’s nomination of former NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund attorney Debo Adegbile to head the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division—with seven Democrats joining Republicans to prevent the president’s pick from moving forward.
Obama called it a “travesty based on wildly unfair character attacks.”
But a senior Democratic Senate staffer was more blunt, calling Adegbile’s treatment part of a “recurring pattern,” and telling The Root that it has become clear that black nominees are being held to a different standard than white nominees.
“What I see here happening,” he said, “is that for African-American nominees, the bar has been raised to such a high level that it’s impossible for any African-American nominee to seemingly clear it with Republicans.” The staffer cited the extraordinarily contentious confirmation proceedings for former Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.), now in charge of the Federal Housing Finance Agency; Jeh Johnson as the new secretary of homeland security; and Robert Wilkins, confirmed as a justice on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, but said that Adegbile’s confirmation process stands out as potentially the most egregious case of racial bias.
Shortly after Adegbile’s nomination was officially dead, RH Reality Check’s Jessica Mason Pieklo wrote that “racism is the best explanation” for why the confirmation failed. And one reason Adegbile’s story is sparking allegations of a double standard is the explanations given by opponents of his nomination for why he was deemed unqualified for the post for which he was being considered.
Adegbile previously served in various capacities, including acting president at the NAACP LDF, an organization once led by the revered first black Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall. But in his role at the LDF, Adegbile was involved in the death-penalty appeal of Mumia Abu-Jamal, a black man convicted of murder in the killing of white police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1982. The Abu-Jamal case has long been racially charged, and despite success in the case in 2011—getting Abu-Jamal’s sentence changed from death to life in prison—Adegbile’s involvement earned him criticism from Republicans like Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), who called the lawyer an “extremist, radical.”

Bones found in Round Rock may be Native American
http://m.lubbockonline.com/filed-online/2014-03-08/bones-found-round-rock-may-be-native-american
ROUND ROCK (AP) — Authorities say human bones discovered this week by construction crews in Central Texas are almost certainly ancient remains of Native Americans.
The Austin American-Statesman reports that Round Rock Police Cmdr. Alain Babin says an FBI anthropologist saw images of the bones and became “quite certain that they are ancient remains.”
Anthropologists from Texas State University were set to go to the wooded area where roads for a new 225-home subdivision are being built. The area is known to locals as a good place to look for arrowheads.
If ancient American Indian remains are found on private land, the landowner must either, preserve the site or have a professional, such as a licensed funeral director, a coroner or a professional archaeologist, remove them, according to state law.
US Seventh Fleet sends ship to assist in search efforts of missing MH370

SOUTH CHINA SEA, March 8 — USS Pinckney, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer conducting training and maritime operations in the South China Sea, is en route to the southern coast of Vietnam to assist in search efforts of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight.
The ship could be in vicinity of the missing jet within 24 hours and carries two MH-60R helicopters which can be equipped for search and rescue, said a statement from the US Seventh Fleet Public Affairs department. A P-3C Orion aircraft will also depart from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan bringing long-range search, radar and communications capabilities to the efforts.
Authorities probing possible foul play after ‘missing’ passport claim.
http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/authorities-probing-possible-foul-play-after-missing-passport-claim
SEPANG, March 8 — The case of the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 aircraft took on a sinister twist today after reports emerged that two foreigners — one Italian and one Austrian — listed on the flight manifest never boarded the plane.
According to several foreign news reports, Italian Luigi Maraldi and Austrian Christian Kozel, both had their passports stolen some time ago. The reports appeared to suggest the possibility of foul play onboard the ill-fated Boeing B777-200 aircraft which has now been missing for nearly 24 hours. Speaking to reporters here, deputy Transport Minister Datuk Aziz Kaprawi acknowledged the news report on the Italian’s allegedly stolen passport and said the authorities are probing the matter for possible foul play. “The information is still under review,” he said. According to Department of Civil Aviation’s director-general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the airport authorities have examined security footage of the passengers and the baggage.
This is an issue of security. So far we are satisfied,” he said.
Asked if the authorities have completely ruled out the possibility of a hijacking or terrorism, he said he could not disclose more on the matter until the claim has been verified.
Two Listed on Missing Jet Had Passports Stolen, Were Not on Plane

Two people listed as passengers on the missing Malaysia Airlines jet were not on the plane and had their passports stolen, according to foreign governments and one relative.
Luigi Maraldi, 37, was the only Italian on a passenger manifest released by the airline after the jet disappeared over the South China Sea.
Both foreign ministries said that the passports were reported stolen in Thailand, the AP reported.
But his father, Walter Maraldi, told NBC News from Cesena, Italy: “Luigi called us early this morning to reassure us he was fine, but we didn’t know about the accident. Thank God he heard about it before us.”
The Associated Press quoted the Italian foreign ministry as confirming that account.
An Austrian was also on the passenger manifest, but Reuters and The Associated Press both quoted the Austrian foreign ministry as saying that he was safe in Austria. The ministry said that his passport was also stolen.
Oh dear God! The GOP cannot stop themselves from lying or stealing other people’s work/land/ideas etc. It’s the history of this country!
Paul Ryan’s Free School Lunch Story Never Actually Happened
http://linkis.com/talkingpointsmemo.com/1HE5g
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) fired up the audience Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference with an anecdote about what he called the heartlessness of giving out free school lunches — but it turns out that “moving” story never really happened.
Ryan used a story about a young boy choosing a lovingly made brown bag lunch over a free school meal, relayed to him by Wisconsin Department of Children and Families Secretary Eloise Anderson, to illustrate that Democrats offer Americans a “full stomach and an empty soul.”
But a shrewd TPM commenter observed that the anecdote closely resembled a book. From there, Wonkette picked up on the fishy tale, followed by Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kessler.
Kessler gave the story “four pinocchios” because Anderson presented it out of context.
H found Anderson told the story at a 2013 congressional hearing that Ryan chaired, and claimed she had spoken to the boy herself. Kessler notes the story closely paralleled an exchange from a book called “An Invisible Thread,” in which an executive offers to either give a young, homeless panhandler money to eat for the week or else make lunch for him each day. The boy insists on having his lunch made for him in a brown-paper bag, because that means “somebody cares” about him.
A spokesman for Anderson told Kessler that the secretary “misspoke” and was actually describing a television interview she had seen with Maurice Mazcyk, the boy described in the book. Kessler further noted that school lunch is not brought up in the book, which means Anderson inserted the program into the anecdote.
Ryan wrote Thursday on his Facebook page that he thanked Anderson for sharing her insights but regretted “failing to verify the original source of the story.”
The author of “An Invisible Thread,” Laurie Schroff, spoke with the Huffington Post about Ryan’s CPAC remarks and the origins of Anderson’s anecdote. She asserted that her book was not “political” and disagreed with Ryan’s “full stomach and an empty soul” comment.
“I want people to think about what they can do to make the world a kinder world,” Schroff said. “I don’t care about Republicans and Democrats. But we are talking about children that need to be fed. Cutting school lunch programs doesn’t accomplish that.”
Those LYIN’ RYAN EYES. Despicable!
I heard about this last night. How the EFF can a Boeing 777 just go missing? Sending prayers to the entire crew and passengers and their families.
It’s now being reported 2 people listed as passengers had reported their passports stolen.

WOW, Smelling fish, and it ain’t Friday!
The Senate is filled with hateful bigots on both sides. The white boys club of America set the bar high for African American nominees. So damn tired of the rampant institutional racism across America.

THIS:
<b."Current Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts was once in Adegbile’s shoes. As a trial lawyer earlier in his career, he helped defend John Errol Ferguson, a convicted serial murderer, back in the 1970s. When Ferguson’s case came before the Supreme Court in 2012, the chief justice recused himself from the matter.
Senators didn’t hold Roberts to the same standard that they held Adegbile, and the chief justice was ultimately confirmed as the top judge in the country. But senators denied Adegbile the post of assistant attorney general of civil rights for acting in essentially the same capacity as a criminal-defense lawyer.
The differing treatment of Adegbile and Roberts by the Senate raises the question of why the two men were held to such different standards."
The good ole white boys club keeps trying to MOVE the GOALPOST, when they don’t realize that WE ARE THE GOALPOST.
