WIKI: Philip David Charles “Phil” Collins, LVO (born 30 January 1951)[2] is an English musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and writer, best known both as drummer and vocalist for rock group Genesis and as a solo artist. He sang the lead vocals on dozens of hit albums and singles in the UK and the US between 1976 and 2010, either as a solo artist or with Genesis. His solo singles, sometimes dealing with lost love and often featuring his distinctive gated reverb drum sound, ranged from the atmospheric “In the Air Tonight”, dance-rock of “Sussudio”, piano-driven power ballad “Against All Odds”, to the political and religious connotations of “Another Day in Paradise”.

Collins joined Genesis in 1970 as the group’s drummer and became their vocalist in 1975 following the departure of their original front-man Peter Gabriel. His solo career, which was launched in 1981 and was heavily influenced by his personal life and soul music, brought both himself and Genesis greater commercial success. Collins’s total worldwide sales as a solo artist are 150 million.[3] Collins has won numerous music awards throughout his career, including seven Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards—winning Best British Male three times, three American Music Awards, an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards and a Disney Legend Award in 2002 for his solo work.[4][5][6] He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.

Chris Christie-ordered probe finds governor didn’t know about Bridgegate: Report

According to The New York Times, the internal review, ordered by the embattled leader and conducted by a law firm with ‘close ties’ to his administration, found that Gov. Christie was not ‘involved in the plotting or directing’ of the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge last September that caused devastating traffic for thousands of commuters.

…No, Obama isn’t Hoover, and—as far as we know—he hasn’t directed the NSA to harass community leaders and derail their efforts (though his Justice Department has yet to challenge the NYPD’s spying on Muslim New Yorkers). But he holds surveillance powers that go beyond anything proposed or imagined by Hoover and his allies. Powers that, had they existed in the 1960s, would have been used to attack and discredit the men and women who made Obama’s life possible.

Funeral held for Chicago police officer

A funeral was held today for Chicago Police Officer David Harris, killed as he headed home from work early March 14 when his car was hit by one driven by a woman allegedly trying to escape Calumet Park police.

Authorities said Shanell Terrell was behind the wheel of a white van and being pursued by a Calumet Park patrol officer when she plowed into Harris’s black Lexus just before 1 a.m. at the corner of 87th Street and South Lafayette Avenue.

Terrell, 31, of the 12300 block of South Throop Street, is being held in lieu of $10 million bond after being charged with first-degree murder, aggravated DUI, aggravated fleeing an accident causing bodily injury and possession of cannabis.

PD: AZ mom leaves 2 young kids in hot car during job interview
    Posted: Mar 21, 2014 12:08 PM CST Updated: Mar 21, 2014 4:50 PM CST
    By Breann Bierman – email

It’s unclear if an Arizona mom got the job she was interviewing for, but after a witness found her children, ages 2 years and 6 months in a hot car outside, she now faces child abuse charges.

Scottsdale police said a witness heard a crying child inside a Dodge Durango parked in an office complex parking lot at 9700 N. 91st St. in Scottsdale about 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The woman reported to police the two young children were inside the vehicle parked directly in the sun, with the engine off, the doors closed and each of the four windows were just slightly open.

The mother, Shanesha Taylor, 35, returned to the vehicle about 45 minutes later and told the officer she had just finished a job interview and did not have anyone to watch her children.

“She was upset. This is a sad situation all around. She said she was homeless. She needed the job. Obviously not getting the job. So it’s just a sad situation,” said Scottsdale Police Sergeant Mark Clark.

She was arrested and booked into jail for child abuse.

Her children are now in CPS custody.

Florida Moves To Restrict Media Access To Stand Your Ground Case Records
    Posted: 03/24/2014 1:36 pm EDT

After a Tampa Bay Times’ review of 200 cases that involved the controversial “Stand Your Ground” law found an “uneven application” and “shocking outcomes,” one Florida lawmaker is seeking to impede the media’s ability to scrutinize the law.

Earlier this month, state Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach) filed an amendment that would “severely limit access to court records in the self-defense cases,” the Times’ Michael van Sickler reports.

The amendment would allow those found innocent in a Stand Your Ground case to “apply for a certificate of eligibility to expunge the associated criminal history record.”

Gaetz said his amendment was unrelated to the Times’ Stand Your Ground investigation, the Associated Press reports. “The point is to ensure that someone who appropriately uses a Stand Your Ground defense doesn’t have their life ruined by the use of that defense,” he said.

Gaetz’s amendment has sparked concern among journalists, Media Matters reports, who say the loss of access to public records could have damaging effects. Alongside statements from editors at the Miami Herald and Florida Times-Union are the opinions of staff who worked on the groundbreaking review by the Times:

Philadelphia School District Announces Plans To Suspend Teacher Seniority Rules For Next Year
    March 24, 2014 6:46 PM

    By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The School District of Philadelphia is scrapping teacher seniority rules, starting next September.

The battle lines are drawn. Superintendent William Hite has announced plans to impose a system this fall allowing principals to fill teacher vacancies without using seniority as the sole factor.

Hite says under his plan, a committee of a school’s principal, teachers and a parent will determine teacher staffing at each school.

“We think this change is essential to enable different schools and unique school communities to match teacher skills with specific needs of students in their school.”

The district has filed a motion with the State Supreme Court, asking the high court to affirm the district’s authority under the state takeover law to impose the new work rules.

The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers has resisted changes to seniority rules, maintaining they were a time-earned protection against administration favoritism.

This is a major test of the district’s power to impose contract terms on the teachers union. The union and the district have been unable to negotiate a new deal to replace the one that expired last August.

Rick Scott’s Top Latino Fundraiser Leaves Campaign After Campaign Staff Allegedly Made Racist Jokes

By Adam Peck on March 24, 2014 at 10:46 am

On late Thursday, billionaire Mike Fernandez abruptly resigned his post as the finance co-chair of Governor Rick Scott’s (R-FL) reelection campaign. The prominent Cuban-American health care mogul’s departure has fueled rumors of racism among Scott’s campaign staff.

Tensions between Scott’s campaign staff and Fernandez had been building for weeks. And the last straw, according to people within the campaign who spoke with the Miami Herald this weekend, was an incident in which several of Scott’s campaign staffers allegedly began joking around in a cartoonish, over-the-top Mexican accent while on the way to a Mexican restaurant.

Fernandez, who is Cuban, reportedly shot off an angry email to campaign leadership after word of the incident leaked out. In statements made to the press following his departure, he didn’t address the controversy at all, instead pointing to disagreements with the direction of the campaign and shouldering some of the blame himself.

But the charges of racism by members of his staff comes at a delicate time for Scott, who has been on something of an Hispanic outreach kick in recent weeks. He came out in favor of allowing in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants earlier this month, and selected Carlos Lopez-Cantera as his lieutenant governor in January, the first time a Latino has held that position in Florida.

Special report: Taxpayers fund creationism in the classroom

By STEPHANIE SIMON | 3/24/14 5:01 AM EDT

Taxpayers in 14 states will bankroll nearly $1 billion this year in tuition for private schools, including hundreds of religious schools that teach Earth is less than 10,000 years old, Adam and Eve strolled the garden with dinosaurs, and much of modern biology, geology and cosmology is a web of lies.

Now a major push to expand these voucher programs is under way from Alaska to New York, a development that seems certain to sharply increase the investment.

U.S. Contraception Ruling Could Have Reach Far Beyond Women’s Rights
    By ADAM LIPTAK
    MARCH 24, 2014

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear arguments in a case that pits religious liberty against women’s rights.

That issue is momentous enough. But it only begins to touch on the potential consequences of the court’s ruling in the case, notably for laws barring discrimination against gay men and lesbians.

The question directly before the justices is whether for-profit corporations must provide insurance coverage for contraception, a requirement of the Affordable Care Act. Hobby Lobby, a chain of crafts stores, challenged the requirement, saying it conflicts with the company’s religious principles.

“If Hobby Lobby were to prevail, the consequences would extend far beyond the issue of contraception,” said Walter Dellinger, a former acting United States solicitor general who filed a brief urging the court to uphold the law.

Objections to laws based on religious beliefs can arise in many settings, and supporters of the coverage requirement say a ruling for the company could frustrate the enforcement of laws addressing health, safety and civil rights.

NY Times Reporter: Obama WH ‘Greatest Enemy of Press Freedom’ Today
    by Josh Feldman | 4:25 pm, March 24th, 2014

New York Times reporter James Risen has been in a years-long legal battle against the government to reveal one of his confidential sources, even petitioning the Supreme Court to hear his case. He’s been very critical of President Obama‘s administration for its “aggressive use of the powers of the government to try to rein in independent national security reporting,” and in a recent journalism forum, Risen took another shot at the White House for being an enemy of press freedom.

In fact, Risen went so far as to say the current administration is one of the biggest threats to such freedoms in a while:

    http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/mediawire/244525/risen-obama-administration-is-this-generations-greatest-enemy-of-press-freedom/

The biggest threat to America’s press are the reporters or so-called journos who wouldn’t report straight facts, if they flew into their mouths.

And I’d go on to say that the President Obama and his administration are PLUGGED IN TO TECHNOLOGY, unlike any other administrations in presidential history.

Neil de Grasse Tyson Smacks Down Creationists Who Are Demanding Equal Time on Cosmos
    By: Rmuse
    Sunday, March, 23rd, 2014, 9:27 am

In a criminal trial when a defense lawyer is faced with overwhelming witness testimony and evidentiary documentation their client is guilty, they resort to sowing doubt in the jury’s mind in hopes one juror will vote for acquittal because they are not certain facts of the case are completely true. The concept of sowing doubt is a favorite method of religious right creationists to disprove scientific facts supporting evolutionary theory by convincing observers that science is questionable and their religious mythos explaining natural phenomenon based on supernatural phenomenon is true and unquestionable.

The success of Fox’s science documentary series “Cosmos” has so rattled creationists unable to cast doubt on de Grasse Tyson’s methodical presentation of fact-based information about the Universe that creationists are demanding equal time on the program. Their goal is simple; cast doubt on empirical scientific data about how the Universe and life on Earth came into existence using archaic mythology they claim refutes science and proves the creation myth is fact. Fortunately, de Grasse Tyson, a forward thinking and intelligent man disabused creationists of the idea they will ever get equal time on Cosmos when he said, “You don’t talk about the spherical Earth with NASA, and then say let’s give equal time to the flat Earthers. There is no way a noted scientist is going to give equal time to ancient mythology to waste time when he could be presenting science.

Nebraska Republican Senate Candidate Campaigns On Fake Navy Memo

Chris Christie Clears Chris Christie Of Any Wrongdoing In Bridgegate Scandal
    By: Justin Baragona

Per a report in The New York Times on Monday, a legal team hired directly by Chris Christie’s office performed a review of the George Washington Bridge scandal and found the New Jersey Governor completely innocent of any wrongdoing. The review of the scandal was conducted by Randy M. Mastro, who just so happened to serve as New York City’s deputy mayor under Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani has been one of the embattled Christie’s biggest supporters and cheerleaders throughout the fallout of his many controversies these past few months.

Mastro’s law firm was paid $1 million in legal fees to conduct the audit. While they pointed out that they had unlimited access to files and phones records, and that they were able to conduct at least 70 interviews with various people in the Governor’s office and administration, they did not speak with either Bridget Kelly or David Wildstein, the two most central figures in this scandal. Another person who was not interviewed was Christie’s former aide and campaign manager, Bill Stephen.

The fact that this review was conducted by a man who is a close ally of Rudy Giuliani will lead to much skepticism and criticism. Also, Mastro’s law firm, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, has done work for Christie in the past. This leads one to wonder how impartial this review really was. On top of that, New Jersey taxpayers are the ones forced to foot the bill for the Governor’s internal review

GOP’s ObamaCare fixation knows no bounds
    By Jay Bookman

“Let me tell you what we’re doing (about Obamacare),” Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens bragged to fellow Republicans back in August: “Everything in our power to be an obstructionist.”

At the time, the comments seemed over the top even for Republicans. Opposing the law politically was one thing; actively sabotaging the ability of Georgians to benefit from a program that they were helping to pay for was something else entirely. Hudgens himself seemed embarrassed by his words, confessing later that “I guess my mouth got away from me.”

Seven months have passed since then, seven months in which the GOP’s obsession with Obamacare has become even deeper and more passionate. And judging from the actions of the 2014 General Assembly, an embarrassing example of individual extremism back in August has by March become the official position of the Georgia Republican Party.

Take the issue of Medicaid expansion to extend health insurance to some 500,000 Georgians, most of them lower-income working people. It would inject billions of dollars of federal money into the state economy, create thousands of jobs and bolster the state’s faltering health-care infrastructure in rural communities. It’s also politically popular. In poll after poll — the most recent released last week — a strong majority of Georgians have said they back the expansion. But Gov. Nathan Deal has refused to allow the federal government to offer the program in this state.

House Republicans Declare That the American People Will Have No New National Parks
    By: Rmuse

Patience is considered to be the capacity to tolerate suffering without getting angry or upset, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties; in the Christian religion, patience is one of the most valuable virtues of life. Apparently, Republicans, purveyors of Christian virtues, having demonstrated supreme forbearance in the face of repeated suffering at the hands of presidents, both Republican and Democrat, have finally had enough and are not going to take any more abuse and suffering. After all, Republicans in the House have looked back on 108 years’ worth of presidential abuse and determined their predecessors’ were errant in their longsuffering and should have done in 1906 what House Republicans plan to do this week; tell Americans there will be no new national parks or protected federal lands ever. In Republican circles, Federal land is the purview of the Koch brothers and their cohort in the dirty energy industry and Republicans have determined it is damn high time the American people comprehend that they have no more right to national parks than they do decent jobs, healthcare, or clean air and water.

The breaking point for Republican patience was the President’s decision to use the authority granted him in a 108 year-old law to protect a pristine stretch of California’s Coast near Point Arena as a new national monument. The idea that an African American President dared follow the example of every president since Teddy Roosevelt and use the Antiquities Act of 1906 to protect iconic American places such as the Statue of Liberty and Grand Canyon was, as Utah Mormon Rob Bishop claimed, Barack Obama’s way of “punking” the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. It is noteworthy that Republicans have never accused any white president of punking the House by protecting federal land, but they have also never accused white presidents of dictatorial tyranny or shredding the Constitution by issuing executive orders either; something the Antiquities Act grants all presidents to protect Federal lands.

As has been their wont since taking control of the House after the 2010 midterms, House Republicans will resort to their only reason for serving in Congress according to Speaker John Boehner; repeal long-established laws that benefit the American people such as the Antiquities Act of 1906. The GOP repeal effort was necessary according to the bill’s sponsor because they claim President Obama did an “end-run around Congress” when he expanded the California Coastal Monument last week. Obviously, Republican patience was wearing thin with this President because it took less than a week for lethargic Republicans to write, debate, and schedule a vote to say “no more National Parks, monuments, or protected federal land” and make sure those decisions lie with the Koch brothers and dirty energy industry.

House To Vote On Controversial ‘No More National Parks’ Policy

Responding to President Obama’s decision last week to protect a stretch of California’s Coast near Point Arena as a new national monument, the House of Representatives is planning to vote next week to overturn a 108 year-old law that presidents of both parties have used to protect iconic American places, including the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty, and Arches National Park.

The bill, H.R. 1459, aims to block presidents from using the Antiquities Act of 1906 to establish new national monuments by putting caps on how many times it can be used, requiring congressional review of proposed monuments, and forcing local communities to engage in an ironic exercise of reviewing the environmental impacts of protecting lands for future generations.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT), criticized President Obama’s use of the Antiquities Act to expand the California Coastal Monument last week as an end-run around Congress. “In other words, the House was punked by the President,” said Bishop.

However, despite arguments from Bishop and Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA) that Congress should hold exclusive power to decide whether or not to protect public lands, the House has effectively shut down all legislative efforts to protect wilderness, parks and monuments since the Tea Party takeover in 2010.

Until the passage of a bill to protect wilderness lands in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore last week, Congress had not protected a single new acre of public lands since 2009, the longest such drought since World War II. Adding injury to insult, Congress also forced a 16-day government shutdown last fall that cost national parks and local communities 8 million lost visitors and $414 million in lost visitor spending.

Congressman Steps Up Attack On Koch Brothers For Detroit Petcoke Pollution

By Emily Atkin on March 21, 2014 at 2:15 pm

The Democratic candidate running for Michigan’s upcoming open Senate seat is accusing billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch of turning Detroit into their own personal trash can.

On Friday, Rep. Gary Peters scheduled an event near the area of the Detroit river where large piles of petroleum coke — the black, dusty byproduct of tar sands oil — once stood. Peters reportedly scheduled the event to tie the existence of those piles to both the Kochs and Republican opponent Terri Lynn Land, and announce an endorsement from the League of Conservation Voters, according to a blurb in Politico.

City residents were so angered by piles of petroleum coke, or “petcoke,” that were illegally stored along the Detroit River last year that then-Mayor Dave Bing demanded the piles be transported away. The company that stored the piles, Detroit Bulk Storage, is currently appealing Bing’s decision in court, arguing that they have the right to store those piles along the river. Though Detroit Bulk Storage stored the petcoke, the petcoke itself was owned by Koch Minerals LLC. Detroit Bulk Storage has confirmed that it was storing it on behalf of Koch.

The Koch brothers are widely regarded as the largest customer and supplier of petcoke in the U.S., according to a report in the Windsor Star.

The state’s Department of Environmental Quality regulators have said the petcoke “has low toxicity as it sits there in a pile.” But citizens and local elected officials, including Peters, have raised serious concerns about the dust invading their air and water supplies and demanded that the long-term effects of the substance be studied.

Fox News Contributor Erik Rush: Obama ‘Murdered’ Everyone on Flight MH370

On Tuesday, we noted that right-wing conspiracy theorist Jim Garrow — a notorious con man who now claims to be a former CIA agent — believes that President Obama blew up the missing Malaysia Airlines plane as part of a “jihad” against China.

He said the military forced the plane to “land by wire” at a base in Diego Garcia and interrogated the “nerds” aboard the jet who are working “for China designing ‘classified’ leading edge computer/internet control software and are carrying the matching hardware with them on the plane.”

Occasional Fox News guest and regular WorldNetDaily commentator Erik Rush, who frequently hosts Garrow on his radio show, laid out a very similar conspiracy theory about the missing plane on his blog and radio program yesterday.

Dem Senate Comm. Blasts Nate Silver for Predicting GOP ‘Slight Favorite’ to Win Senate
    by Noah Rothman | 8:05 am, March 24th, 2014

FiveThirtyEight analyst Nate Silver won copious Democratic praise in 2012 after he predicted that President Barack Obama would win reelection. He never wavered from that prediction, in spite of some bumps for the president along the campaign trail, and Silver was vindicated when it turned out that he had correctly predicted the election results in 49 of 50 states. Times have changed, however, as Silver is on the receiving end of Democratic ire this year.

Over the weekend, Silver said that the GOP has a 60 percent chance of retaking the upper chamber of Congress based on early polling results. In response, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee political director Guy Cecil released a 1,000-word memo remarking on how Silver was actually wrong in 2012 and he will be wrong again in 2014.

G-8 has KICKED VLAD TO THE CURB

The United States and six other Western nations voted to effectively kick Russia out of the G8 in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea, a White House statement said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov downplayed the significance of the move.

“G8 is an informal organization that does not give out any membership cards and, by its definition, cannot remove anyone,” he said at a news conference. “All the economic and financial questions are decided in G20.”
