Always wondered what the hell Sussudio meant?
“Sussudio” is a song by Phil Collins, released as a single in February 1985. The song is also the first track on Collins’ third album, No Jacket Required, released in January of the same year. The song entered frequent rotation on MTV in May, and by 6 July, both the single and the album reached number one on their respective US Billboard charts.
The main lyric came about as Collins was improvising lyrics to a drum machine track he had programmed: “suss-sussudio” was a wording that scanned well. After trying to find an alternative word to fit the rhythm, the singer decided to keep “Sussudio” as the song title and lyric. Collins has said that he “improvised” the lyric. Collins was just playing around with a drum machine, and the lyric “sus-sussudio” was what came out of his mouth. “So I kinda knew I had to find something else for that word, then I went back and tried to find another word that scanned as well as ‘sussudio,’ and I couldn’t find one, so I went back to ‘sussudio'”, Collins said. According to Collins, the lyrics are about a schoolboy crush on a girl at school.
The synthesizer, rhythm and synth bass arrangement, sound design, and programming was done by David Frank of The System and the horn arrangement was done later based on the motif from the bassline.

Well kids, our never-ending election season is about to shift into high gear. And it’s an off-year election, a midterm if you will, which occurs every two years in between the only elections which Democratic voters seem to think matter. Which means we’re hearing it from the usual quarters that “Both parties are the same” or “elections don’t matter” or “I voted for Obama—isn’t that enough.”
Don’t like Diane Feinstein? Well, she’s not my favorite cup of tea either.
Don’t like Mark Pryor? Yeah, he’s kind of not my favorite Democrat.
Don’t like the Blue Dogs who will try to wrest control of the House away from Teabaggers? No, they may not be what Markos Moulitsas calls “better Democrats”.
But you know what? I don’t give a fuck.
Democrats like Feinstein and Pryor will make sure that Harry Reid remains Majority Leader, and sets the agenda in the Senate. The Blue Dogs so disparaged by those on the Purity Left gave Nancy Pelosi the gavel from 2007 to 2011 and allowed President Obama to get ACA passed and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repealed. And if they win in November, Pelosi will again be Speaker, and actual legislation will once again move.
So, please, spare me your scruples. Spare me the “not good enough” speech.
The only thing which should be on the mind of any Democratic or Democratic-leaning voter should be crushing the GOP in both House and Senate come November.
Actually, let me amend that. The first thing on our minds should be… VOTING.
I’ve written on the GOP civil war, and how that might depress GOP turnout among the more rabid Teabaggers. But the fact is that most GOP voters will crawl on sharp glass while drinking lighter fluid to get to the polls every single time, and not just for midterms or Presidential elections. School boards matter as much as the White House.

Sanctions Will Work, All Right. Just Ask the Oligarchs

On the face of it, Western sanctions against Russia in the wake of the annexation of the Crimea look weak, ridiculous and possibly illegal.
President Barack Obama, who has supposedly taken the toughest line in condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “aggression,” has merely declared banking sanctions on a dozen Russian businessmen personally close to Putin. The European Union’s list of sanctioned Russian officials has been shorter still, prompting an outcry against Europe’s—and particularly Britain’s—feeble response.
“London is Russia’s tawdry bitch,” tweeted British-born Columbia University history professor Simon Schama, furious at British politicians kowtowing to London financial district lawyers and bankers grown fat on Russian money.
But in truth, there’s some deep thinking behind Washington’s sanctions regime, and they could ultimately prove deadly to Putin’s future.
The key to the sanctions strategy is to drive a wedge between Putin’s shrinking inner circle and the wider Russian elite. That intimate circle is composed mostly of former KGB cronies “willing to sacrifice Russia’s newfound economic prosperity on the altar of imperial ambition,” says Brian Whitmore, author of The Power Vertical blog.
But most Russian businessmen are not. They have reaped the benefits of Russia’s engagement with the world economy over the past decade and are not ready to follow their leaders into economic isolation.

On one Friday earlier this month, more than 11,000 Muslims in mosques across the country heard a sermon about the Affordable Care Act.

As the national March 31 deadline for health insurance enrollment looms and with President Obama’s encouragement, organizations across a range of faiths are working to sign up uninsured Americans for coverage under Obamacare.
“What other time in our history will we be able to help our communities focus on wellness, to help every citizen access a means to be healthy and treat medical conditions, breaking the trend of making emergency rooms and ‘urgent care’ our primary care physicians?” asked Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker, director of the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Social Action Commission.

Kirsten Gillibrand to make sure Clinton runs

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says she won’t run for president in 2016 even if Hillary Clinton doesn’t but that she will “make sure” the former secretary of state launches a bid.
“I’m going to make sure Hillary does! And I’ll make sure everyone votes for her and help her raise money,” the Democrat told the audience of close to 200 at POLITICO’s Women Rule event, “How Women Run: Power, Perception and Reality,” held Tuesday at the Willard hotel.
Gillibrand, who was appointed to Clinton’s Senate seat in 2008 and went on to win a special election in 2010 and reelection in 2012, said she feels “blessed” to serve on the Hill.
“Without a doubt, I feel that this platform I have to serve in the U.S. Senate is extraordinary,” she said. “I feel blessed and lucky every single day that my job is to help people.”
Looking toward 2016, Gillibrand said it’s “hard to say” what Clinton will face if she runs, including sexism, but lauded Clinton as the top contender.

Speaker of the House John Boehner’s office went into full freak out mode after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called out Republican obstruction for sending the wrong message to Putin and Russia.
Yesterday, on the Senate floor, Harry Reid blamed Republican obstruction for sending Putin the wrong message.
Reid said, “It’s impossible to know whether events would have unfolded differently if the United States had responded to Russian aggression with a strong, unified voice. When a few extremist Republicans blocked action on this robust bill reported with strong, bipartisan support by the Foreign Relations Committee, it sent a dangerous message to Russian leaders. I am pleased that, in the face of Republicans obstruction, President Obama moved forward with additional sanctions. The President is working closely with our European allies to impose the most effective sanctions possible. In light of such clear-cut Russian aggression against Ukraine, it’s difficult to believe Republicans blocked this package at all.”
Boehner’s spokesman Michael Steel replied, “The Senate Majority Leader sounds completely unhinged. The House has acted and is continuing to act, in a reasonable and responsible way to give the White House the tools it needs to hold President [Vladimir] Putin accountable.”

Racism At Center Of GOP Movement As More Whites Became Republican During Obama Years

Gallup released the results of a study on Monday showing the racial breakdown of political party affiliation since 1995. What the study revealed, and what most people have already figured out, is that with the election of President Obama in 2008, more white Americans have shifted party allegiance to the Republican Party, or have at least indicated they lean Republican. Meanwhile, Democrats continue to enjoy a huge advantage among non-whites, with almost no change in Democratic preference from the Clinton and Bush presidencies.
In 2008, nearly the same number of whites preferred the Democratic Party as they did the Republican Party. Starting in 2009, the trend line started to shift back towards the GOP. By 2010, during the Tea Party wave in the midterms, Republicans held a 12-point advantage with white people. The gap grew even larger in 2011, when it grew to 14 points. Since then, it has regressed a bit, but Democrats are still in the hole with whites by a full 10 points.
While Republicans have seen an uptick in white voters, Democrats have kept the same large advantage among minority voters. The percentage of minority voters who identified as Democratic as opposed to Republican in the Clinton and Bush years is almost exactly the same as during the first five years of the Obama presidency.

Charles Koch Says The Poor Have It Really Good So They Need to Stop Complaining

Poverty is a condition that refers to the general dearth of material possessions or money that prevents people from having access to basic human needs such as food, water, sanitation, clothing, shelter, health care, and education. It is a sad fact of life that in the richest nation in the history of the world, an inordinately high number of Americans live in abject poverty and do not have the means to provide their families with fundamentally basic needs of food, shelter, or healthcare. It is little surprise that Republicans are planning to increase the number of Americans living in poverty according to their intent to eliminate the nation’s anti-poverty programs, and it is not because the country is broke as Republicans are wont to claim. It is more likely due, in part, to one of the two richest men in the country who claims the tens-of-millions of Americans living below the poverty line need to shut up, stop complaining, and start celebrating their good fortune as members of the richest one-percent in the world.
First, it is important to note that poverty, at least relative poverty, is generally defined by reputable economists contextually as economic inequality in the location or society in which people live, and in that context, it is likely that more than half of the American population is living in poverty. Charles Koch completely disagrees and last year his foundation produced a commercial stating that a family earning $34,000 annually are part of the richest one-percent in the world; especially when compared to developing third world nations and countries such as China and India where the majority of the population lives in absolute squalor.
It is not just Charles Koch, another wealthy CEO, Bud Konheim, said just last month that “We’ve got a country that the poverty level is wealth in 99% of the rest of the world, so we’re talking about woe is me, woe is us, woe is this. The guy that’s making, oh my God, he’s making $35,000 a year, why don’t we try that out in India or some countries we can’t even name. China, anyplace, the guy is wealthy.” Except Americans living in poverty do not live in China or India, or third world nations; they live in America where according to the Economic Policy Institute, a family of three would have to earn at least $48,000 annually just to afford the basic necessities to survive such as food, housing, and healthcare. Another organization, the Working Poor Families Project, estimates that the required income to meet the most basic survival needs is $45,000 annually; America’s median household income is approximately $51,000.

Mother of baby found alone in building turns herself in

The mother of a baby found alone in a South Side apartment building Friday night turned herself in to police Monday.
The 1-year-old girl was found about 11:30 p.m. Friday in the vestibule of an Auburn Gresham apartment building in the 8200 block of South Justine Street, according to a community alert from Chicago Police.
She was taken in good condition to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Center in Evergreen Park and was later released into the custody of the state’s Department of Child and Family Services, police said at the time.
The mother turned herself in to police Monday and was being questioned by detectives, police said.
Detectives had been looking for the mother since Saturday afternoon, after the girl was identified, police said at the time.

The Obamacare Benefit That Gets No Respect
The uninsured aren’t the only ones who benefit. The underinsured do too.

Everybody wants to know whether the Affordable Care Act will significantly reduce the proportion of Americans without health insurance. It’s an extremely important question. It’s also not the only one that matters.
Obamacare’s goal isn’t simply helping the uninsured. It’s also supposed to help the “underinsured”—people with policies that are so expensive to maintain, or leave such large gaps in coverage, that paying for health care is still a devastating burden. This problem hasn’t gotten nearly the attention it deserves. A new report, just out from the Commonwealth Fund, seeks to change that.
According to the report, which became public early Tuesday morning, some 32 million non-elderly Americans were in households that spent a “high share of income on medical care” during 2012. That’s a little more than one in ten non-elderly Americans. The majority, though by no means all, are poor or near-poor. (See graph above) Add them to the number of Americans without insurance at that time, and you end up with about 79 million people, or nearly one-third of the non-elderly population, that was at risk of not being able to pay for their medical care before the Affordable Care Act became law.
The Commonwealth Fund report uses a very specific and somewhat complicated definition of under-insurance, based on how out-of-pocket costs and premiums compare to household income. (You can read the full explanation here.) Not everybody would agree with that definition. Conservatives tend to support higher out-of-pocket spending, because they believe it discourages wasteful spending and improves market competition. As such, many would probably argue the Fund’s definition of under-insurance makes the problem seem a lot worse than it is. That’s a totally fair argument, at least for those who hold the conservative point of view.

A Belgian newspaper has come under fire for printing a satirical piece that included a mock-up of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama as apes, and the paper ended up apologizing today for the “bad taste” of running the picture in the first place.

Judge Joe Brown Jailed After Spat
TV personality Judge Joe Brown was sentenced to five days in jail on Monday after he acted “pretty raucous” and “challenged the authority” of Magistrate Harold Horne in Tennessee, a judge told CNN. Brown was in court to represent a client in a child-support case, and became angry when he found out his case was not on the afternoon docket. He was reportedly held in contempt five times before he was able to be removed from the courtroom. Brown’s reality-TV show was canceled last year after 15 years.

That’s the real issue with what Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said about distressed inner-city communities. Critics who accuse him of racism are missing the point. What he’s really guilty of is providing a reason for government to throw up its hands in mock helplessness.
The fundamental problem that poor people have, whether they live in decaying urban neighborhoods or depressed Appalachian valleys or small towns of the Deep South, is not enough money.

A vulnerable Dem who is campaigning on expanding Social Security

Senator Mark Begich of Alaska is embroiled in one of the toughest reelection fights in the country. His solution, in part: To campaign on a proposal that’s far outside the mainstream of what appears to constitute respectable Beltway discourse on entitlements.
That would be the idea of expanding Social Security benefits, rather than cutting them.
Senator Begich is one of a small but growing group of Democratic lawmakers who support the idea of lifting or changing the payroll tax cap, so higher earners pay more, while adopting a new measure for inflation that would increase benefits for all seniors. This is in contrast to the “Chained CPI” proposal that would use an index leading to a benefits cut, which Obama has championed. The idea behind expanding benefits is that large percentages of seniors’ income goes to costs that have risen faster than inflation, like medical care and housing.
Dems have been perhaps overly willing to get drawn on to GOP austerity turf by debating spending cuts. But Begich makes a startling suggestion: Talking about expanding Social Security benefits is good politics for Dems.
“When you tell seniors, `We want to make sure your dollars rise as your costs do,’ there is automatic excitement because they recognize we understand what they’re going through,” Begich told me today. ”Are we for or against helping seniors have a dignified life in their later years? I’m for that.”

No Girls, Blacks, or Hispanics Take AP Computer Science Exam in Some States

A new analysis of test-taking data finds that in Mississippi and Montana, no female, African American, or Hispanic students took the Advanced Placement exam in computer science.
In fact, no African-American students took the exam in a total of 11 states, and no Hispanic students took it in eight states, according to state comparisons of College Board data compiled by Barbara Ericson, the director of computing outreach and a senior research scientist at Georgia Tech.
The College Board, which oversees AP, notes on its website that in 2013 about 30,000 students total took the AP exam for computer science, a course in which students learn to design and create computer programs. Less than 20 percent of those students were female, about 3 percent were African American, and 8 percent were Hispanic (combined totals of Mexican American, Puerto Rican, and other Hispanic).
Deborah Davis, spokeswoman for the College Board, wrote in an email, “We were not surprised by Barbara Ericson’s findings because unfortunately, computing courses have historically been dominated by white, male students.”
Even so, Ericson’s breakdown of the test-takers offers a stark illustration of gender and racial inequities at the high school level. And it comes at a time when the College Board has stepped up its focus on seeing that traditionally underrepresented groups of students have access to AP courses and tests.
In the 47 states where girls took the computer science exam, the percentage of female test-takers ranged from about 4 percent in Utah to 29 percent in Tennessee.

Where does Scott Brown stand on New Hampshire’s Medicaid expansion?

Now that Scott Brown looks all but certain to run for Senate in New Hampshire, sooner or later he’ll be asked: Do you support or oppose the Medicaid expansion that’s currently moving forward in the state you want to represent?
The question goes beyond just New Hampshire and is a reminder that the politics of Obamacare are not quite as clear cut for Republicans as they like to claim.
Earlier this month, the GOP-controlled state senate passed a version of the Medicaid expansion in New Hampshire, and it will get a vote this week in the Democratic-controlled House, which is expected to pass it, after which it would be signed by the Dem governor. It could expand coverage to 50,000 people in the state and proponents expect the federal cash it brings in to boost the state’s economy.

Civilian Fatally Shoots Sailor Aboard U.S. Navy Destroyer
A civilian fatally shot a sailor aboard a docked U.S. Navy destroyer in Virginia on Monday night before he was shot dead by security forces, officials said.
The suspect had authorized access to Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval base, where he was able to wrestle a handgun from a security guard, U.S. Navy officials told NBC News.
He shot dead a sailor aboard USS Mahan, which was docked at Pier 1, before being fatally gunned down by security forces, the officials said. Both the victim and suspect were male.
The shooting happened at about 11:30 p.m. and the base was put on lockdown until around 1 a.m. while security forces responded. The Navy officials said it was not clear what sparked the incident.
To get on the base, civilians must be escorted or have a pass. Each base entrance is guarded, and all 13 piers have additional security forces. As part of ongoing security efforts, handheld ID scanners were implemented this year at Navy bases in the region, including the Norfolk station.
Capt. Robert Clark, commanding officer of Naval Station Norfolk, told an earlier press conference that he was not prepared to discuss how the suspect obtained the weapon as it was still under investigation.
