Saturday Open Thread: Black Comedians Week – Paul Mooney, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock

We end Black Comedians week with one trailblazer and two inheritors of his style: Paul Mooney, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock.

When I think of Paul Mooney, I think of fearless. He has never tried to sugarcoat his comedy, and though bruising and wincing, the truth just bursts through.

Paul Mooney is the Town Crier for America and has never shied away from that role. If you’re uncomfortable by what he says – GOOD! You’re supposed to be.

Eddie Murphy burst onto the scene and just bowled us over. His impressions on SNL were classic.

Chris Rock is another one that just went KAPOW on the scene.

Bob Johnson: When Obama was doing something in the neighborhood.. I won’t say what he was doing.”

To me, as an African American, I am frankly insulted the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues — when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood; I won’t say what he was doing, but he said it in his book — when they have been involved,”

Dirty ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, the Clintons. And Bob Johnson is a slave-catching COON!

Curious Lion Cub Gets Trapped on the Side of a Cliff… His Mom Puts Herself in Danger to Make Sure He Doesn’t Fall Any Further

A photographer was lucky enough to capture this scene, and what transpired was absolutely incredibly.

Clinging on for dear life, this little lion cub cried for help. His mother arrives at the side of the cliff, along with some other members of the pride, and realize the peril the little one is in. One misstep and he could be tumbling down the rest of the cliff. The females each try to scale the cliff, but the sheer steepness of it keeps them back.

Finally the power of motherly love kicks in and it was all caught on camera.

In a article that appears in the June 2014 issue of GQ, the magazine salutes Dave Chappelle’s sold out shows with a look back at what some folks (at least the one’s who were lucky enough to be there) consider to be one of the funniest nights on earth. They literally called it that! One night, Dave made a surprise appearance at the Comedy Cellar in N.Y.C. and he invited several of his famous friends onstage. It turned into a comedy roast/toast/pass the mic session. Here are their reflections:

    Chris Rock:
    Dave is like Prince.

    Marlon Wayans: Like Bigfoot.

Rock: You never know when he’s going to show up. That night was a comedy booty call from Dave. [in Chappelle’s voice] “I’m in town, man! You should come on down!” Dave’s my favorite comedian. So…

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson: I was on a date, and I was trying not to look at my phone, but I heard a beep and saw the name Rock: “I’m down here at the Cellar. Chappelle’s going on in twenty minutes.” That was the fastest “Check, please!” I’ve ever said in my life. I lied to my date and said I’d been called into the studio.

Wayans: I was out with Bill [Bellamy] after a Knicks game and hit Kevin [Hart] up. He was in town to host SNL. He was like, “Yo, I’m at the Comedy Cellar. Chappelle and Rock are here.” I was like, “Word. Let’s go.”

Thompson: I grabbed the only seat left: There’s a piano onstage, and I took the bench. Chappelle gets up and riffs for forty-five minutes about—who’s the guy with the prosthetic legs? Oscar Pistorius? Dave was talking about how Pistorius would be the least vulnerable guy in prison, because all he has to do is scrape his legs on the steel bars every night. He started making this sharpening noise, and we were just done, all of us.

Bill Bellamy: Me and Marlon walk in, and Dave is onstage. When he was 18 or so, I hosted a night at this club in East Orange, New Jersey—the Peppermint Lounge—where he used to perform. So I know if he sees me, he’s gonna go crazy. He sees me. He says, “People, this is unbelievable. I think I’m having a flashback.”

Thompson: Then, one by one, he just called them up, kind of like the Harlem Globetrotters’ Magic Circle.

Bellamy: Kevin Hart walks out. And here comes Chris Rock. Then Dave was like, “Who else is in here?” That was rich. So then me and Marlon come up. People go goddamn crazy. And we just start passing the microphone, telling stories about each other. It was a Black Pack moment.

Kevin Hart: That crowd got something money can’t buy. They got authenticity.

Rock: Yeah, it was kind of a lovefest.

Bellamy: I remember Chris saying Marlon fucked one of his ex-girlfriends.

Wayans: Dave says something about my mama’s vagina, about her having ten kids. I said, “Don’t make me call all the Negroes that came up out that vagina. You don’t want to get the Wayans beat-down.” He goes, “Oh, please don’t call them niggas.”

Bellamy: Chris said something to Kevin that congratulated him on his success—but it was like, “You may be hot right now, but Dave Chappelle is hot forever.”

Rock: You’re not going to sit there and let other people be funnier than you. I mean, I like Kevin, but come on. I’m not conceding.

Bellamy: But we all had our moment to say how much we love and appreciate each other’s talent. It wasn’t a roast. It was a tribute.

Rock: And it’ll never happen again. There’s no Coachella of comedy where we all get together, you know?

Dave Chappelle: I had no idea all those guys were going to be there. You know, comedy is surprisingly competitive. It’s like being in the Karate Kid tournament every night. I’ve known these guys for years and have always respected their talent, but on that night, I got to experience it up close. That’s why it was special. But it made me laugh that Ahmir told his date he needed to go to the studio. Why didn’t he just bring her to the show?

CLINTON: Barack Obama’s living in a fantasyland, if he thinks he’ll beat Hillary.

Jesse Jackson was a black presidential candidate and he LOST.

Barack Obama doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in HELL of beating Hillary.

need I go on, though I said I would not. Them there’s fighting words, Bubba. You and Hillary blew it with the race-baiting and dog whistling. NO TRUST LEFT FROM ME.since then.

Vigilante or vindicator? One man’s bid to root out voter fraud
    By Leigh Ann Caldwell, CNN
updated 4:03 PM EDT, Fri June 6, 2014

To Jay DeLancy, North Carolina is fraught with voter fraud and the state is doing nothing about it.

So the former Air Force veteran has taken matters into his own hands and vows, as he sees it, to save the system from eroding honest elections.

DeLancy launched the Voter Integrity Project more than three years ago, leading a band of volunteers in scouring public records and knocking on doors to root out irregularities in voter rolls.

It’s tedious work, and DeLancy has generated mixed results as well as a measure of controversy.

Some call his efforts “sloppy” and question whether he’s addressing a serious shortcoming or whether he’s become — intended or not — illustrative of the tough Republican-driven voter identification law that critics contend intimidates and disenfranchises minority voters.

Moreover, this is all playing out amid hardening partisan divisions nationwide and legal and legislative battles as the nation hurtles toward a midterm vote with the Senate at stake and a presidential ballot in 2016.

Hillary Calls Black Views on Color-Arousal “Preposterous”
Hillary Clinton is at it again, insulting Black people and trying to walk over us on her hoped-for path to the presidency, according to quotes from her new book, as published in the New York Times. Apparently she discusses the 2008 campaign and reopens old wounds in her soon-to-be-released memoir.

Back in 2008, when Hillary-surrogate Geraldine Ferraro said that Senator Obama was only ahead in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination because he was Black, and when Bill Clinton said that Obama’s win in the South Carolina primary was insignificant because Rev. Jesse Jackson had also won the state, while Bill Clinton also called Obama’s candidacy “the biggest fairytale” he had ever heard of, the Washington Post quoted me and Color of Change expressing anger at the Clintons’ color-aroused appeals.

    …………………….

Well, six years later the time to forgive Hillary still is not foreseeable, because she is still insulting Black people about the same events while doubling down on her ignorance of our feelings that caused her to lose the nomination back in 2008. In her new memoir that discusses the 2008 race, she says,

“The preposterous charge of racism against Bill was particularly painful.”

I didn’t know until now that, in addition to Bill’s color-aroused remarks of 2008, Hillary considered the criticisms of those remarks to be “preposterous”. I naively imagined that Bill was speaking only for himself when he belittled Obama in association with Obama’s skin color. Now, I understand that Bill was speaking for Hillary and she considers criticism of her color-aroused campaign to have been not merely wrong but also “preposterous”. I would have thought that, in retrospect, it was Bill’s calling Obama’s presidential aspirations a “fairy tale” that turned out to be “preposterous”.

Apparently, Hillary Clinton has learned nothing about securing the Black vote for herself, because none of us who criticized the color-aroused nature of her campaign in 2008 feels that we were wrong to do so, and we certainly do not believe that our criticisms were “preposterous”. The New York Times obviously quoted this particular statement from Hillary’s memoirs because they know it will be inflammatory and because the media criticized Clinton as much as Black people did for the comments that Hillary’s surrogates, including Bill, made.

Apparently Hillary has learned nothing, believing that the Blacks who criticized her campaign had reasons no more legitimate than the criticism that came from, for example, Fox News. To Hillary, Blacks might as well have been part of the right-wing conspiracy for all the credit she gives to our perceptions. She rejects and discounts our opinions in the same way she rejected theirs.

Gloria Borger Can’t See Michelle Obama Running for Senate, Unless ‘Handed to Her’

Gloria Borger, you’re MIGHTY CONFUSED and have First Lady Michelle Obama mixed up with Former First Lady Hillary Clinton. Hillary thought the 2008 presidency was going to be handed to her, simply because of Bubba Clinton. She ran a SHITTY campaign.

Michelle Obama comes from a totally different world where she knows, she does NOT get handed anything, unless she EARNS IT.
