Oh Brother Where Art Thou-4In 1937, Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney), Pete Hogwallop (John Turturro), and Delmar O’Donnell (Tim Blake Nelson) escape from a chain gang at Parchman Farm and set out to retrieve the $1,200,000 in treasure that Everett claims to have stolen from an armored car and buried before his incarceration. They have four days to find it before the valley in which it is hidden will be flooded to create Arkabutla Lake as part of a new hydroelectric project. Early in their escape, while still chained together, they try to jump onto a moving train, but are dragged off when Pete trips. They then encounter a blind man (Lee Weaver) traveling on a handcar. They hitch a ride, and he tells their futures. They “seek a great fortune” and they will “find a fortune, though it will not be the one they seek.” They will also see many wonders on their journey, including a “cow on the roof of a cotton house.

    White Iowa Teacher Tells Black Student To Call Him ‘Master’

    Roosevelt High School senior Jabre White was doing what so many of us were taught to do, respectfully addressing authority figures, when his teacher responded in one of the least respectful, and most dehumanizing, ways of all.

    In a recent interview with The Des Moines Register, White says that, when he politely told his economics teacher Shawn McCurtain “Yes, sir,” the latter corrected him, insisting he “say ‘Yes, master.’”

    White stood up for himself, replying, “Who the f— are you talking to? You’re nobody’s master, and this is not the slave days. If you thought it was funny, it’s not.” When he later reported the incident to Roosevelt High School’s white Vice Principal Joseph Blazevich, White claims that Blazevitch “didn’t seem surprised about what the teacher said.” Instead, White says, Blazevich “was more interested in about what I said. He was upset that I dropped the f-bomb.”

    After White’s mother asked Blazevich to investigate the incident, however, he did say that it was “terrible” and “shameful,” and claimed that “the instructor was very remorseful.” Nevertheless, it is unclear whether McCurtain has been punished for the way he treated one of his African American students — though he did call White’s mother to apologize for the remark. According to a district spokesperson, McCurtain is still employed by the school district.

    In May, the Democratic National Committee and Ohio Democratic Party asked the U.S. Southern District Court to make permanent a 2012 ruling that county boards of election must allow early, in-person voting on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday before Election Day.
    The summary judgment issued Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge Peter C. Economus orders Husted to set business hours for the three days prior to Election Day “to preserve the right of all Ohio voters to cast his or her vote with said hours to be uniform throughout the State and suitable to the needs of the particular election in question.”
    The Obama Campaign sued Husted and the state of Ohio in 2012, alleging the change violated Ohioans rights to participate equally in elections. The courts sided with the plaintiffs, concluding it was wrong to treat some voters (non-military) different than others (military). The Ohio Supreme Court rejected a request for an emergency stay, and Husted released new hours including the weekend voting days.
    The 2012 case remained open and Wednesday’s summary judgment makes the ruling permanent.

    A lot of people want to spin Cantor’s loss to suit their purposes. But if you don’t think it was based in racism then you weren’t paying attention to his opponent’s campaign. You can poll the people of the 7th District all you want, but they just voted for the guy who ran on opposing the DREAM Act. That is not a moderate position, at all. That is the position of people who don’t like brown people. Period.

    And that was Brat’s biggest issue.

    Eric Cantor to step down as majority leader at end of July

    House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) plans to step down from his leadership post by the end of July, setting off a weeks-long scramble for the chamber’s number two job, according to three Republicans familiar with his plans.

    Cantor will formally announce his plans later Wednesday in a meeting with his House Republican colleagues in the basement of the U.S. Capitol.

    Cantor’s decision – coming just hours after he lost a primary contest to tea party-backed economist Dave Brat – comes as several senior Republicans began scrambling Wednesday to build support and fill the leadership vacuum.

    When David Brat defeated House Majority leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) in the Republican primary of Virginia’s 7th Congressional District last night, House Republicans likely lost their only Jewish representative. In his place, they may have gained a radically pro-capitalist Christian theologian.

    Christian Tea Party candidates are certainly not unusual, but a trail of writings show that Brat, an economics professor at Randolph-Macon college, has an especially radical theology to support his right-wing politics. Brat’s CV lists him as a graduate of Hope College, a Christian school in Michigan, and Princeton Theological Seminary, a Presbyterian Church U.S.A. seminary in New Jersey. He claims to be a “fairly orthodox Calvinist,” but several of his published writings expose a unsettling core theology that is centered around lifting up unregulated, free-market capitalism as a morally righteous system that churches should embrace—or else.

    In a 2011 paper entitled “God and the Advanced Mammon — Can Theological Types Handle Usury and Capitalism?”, published in Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology, Brat champions the moral superiority of the capitalistic system. “Capitalist markets and their expansion in China and India have provided more for the common good, more ‘social welfare,’ than any other policy in the past ten years,” he writes, adding “So, as a seminary student concerned with human welfare, I naturally wanted to learn about these free markets.”

    Brat goes on to list a number of arguments for and against the practice of usury, but concludes the paper with a chilling warning about what will happen if churches fail to build a movement in support of free-market capitalism—namely, a Hitler-like figure could rise to power. He writes:

    WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans have blocked an election-year attempt by Democrats to let people refinance their student loan debt at lower rates.

    The 56-38 vote Wednesday fell short of the 60 votes needed to proceed to debate on the measure.

    The bill by Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts would have allowed people with student loans to refinance the debt at today’s lower rates. The Obama administration said it could have helped some 25 million borrowers save $2,000 each.

    Republicans said the bill wouldn’t have done anything to lower education costs or reduce borrowing. They accused Democrats of looking for a political issue and raising taxes.

    Senate Republicans have blocked Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s student loan refinancing bill that would have helped 40 million borrowers because it would have raised taxes on millionaires.

    Warren’s student loan refinancing bill, the Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act, failed by a vote of 58-38. (Harry Reid changed his vote to a no for procedural reasons.) Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Bob Corker (R-TN) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) were the only Republicans to vote for the bill.

    Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, “In America today, millions of Americans are caught in financial quicksand, and they are looking for a helping hand to pull them to safety. Instead, the Republican leader has reaffirmed his commitment to the status quo. Why reform today, what he and his party say they’ll reform next year?”

    Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) continued to hide the real reason why he was blocking the bill, “The Senate Democrats’ bill isn’t really about students at all. It’s really all about Senate Democrats Because Senate Democrats don’t actually want a solution for students. They want an issue to campaign on — to save their own hides in November.”

    If one was to examine why some poor children fail in schools and attempted to come up with the reasons why, they might say huge budget shortfalls, poverty, poor parenting skills, disparity between rich and poor neighborhood school funding, unsafe school environments, or a lack of access to technology. However, if you are corporate moguls, billionaires, and privatization advocates, the only reason nine poor students failed is because of public school teachers’ due process protections. Due process protections include not being fired without a reason, receiving a fair hearing when a parent complains their child did not earn a high grade, or worst of all belonging to a union. None of those due process protections have any impact on teacher competence or a students’ success, but being assigned a teaching position in a poor neighborhood with underfunded schools does.

    What the Republican Party, Koch brothers, Michelle Rhee, the religious right, and billionaire corporate owners all have in common regarding education is destroying public schools, privatizing the education system, and breaking teachers’ unions. There have been unsuccessful attempts in the past to privatize California’s public school system, but the public and legislature are adamantly opposed, so a conglomerate of billionaires, corporations, and for-profit charter school advocates appealed to a Republican judge for assistance and he complied. On Tuesday a judge ruled in a lawsuit filed by billionaires that California teachers’ due process protections are unconstitutional and the reason nine students in poor neighborhood schools were unsuccessful.

    The lawsuit was brought by a group called Students Matter, which is led by a Silicon Valley optical entrepreneur David Welch who has absolutely no education experience and is closely aligned with such notable figures in the anti-union, pro-charter, school privatization movement such as Michelle Rhee of StudentsFirst and Eli Broad. The joke of the billionaires’ lawsuit against due process for teachers is that the focus was “education equality” that has nothing whatsoever to do with due process protections and tenure. For the record, tenure means a teacher cannot be terminated without the administrator giving a reason (cause). Without tenure, a teacher can be fired because a parent complains their lazy brat did not earn an A, or an administrator’s sexual advances were rebuffed. There is no such thing as a guaranteed lifetime teaching job, but that is not what the billionaires’ lawsuit presented to the judge.

    All that was ‘lost’ because of Cantor’s loss, i.e. Immigration Reform and the VRA.

    NOTHING was stopping Cantor from doing Immigration Reform before his loss, and even if you say that his opponent running on it was the reason he denied a vote in the House, ok. His ass has lost now. He has nothing to lose. Bring the bill up for a vote.

    Now, as far as that VRA is concerned, I feel like climbing through the computer screen and bytchslapping you myself.

    The reason why they won’t even hold hearings on the VRA IS BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT TO FIX THE VRA.

    They are VERY pleased by what the Supreme Court has done and anyone who wants to write anything other than that can kiss my entire Black ass.

    Media’s Bergdahl Fiasco: Why TV News’ Demise Can’t Come Soon Enough

    There was a time in American history when the release of an American prisoner of war would have been universally celebrated, at whatever cost it was made. There was a time in American history when a newly elected president traded arms to free American hostages, and a time when an American administration staged a rambo-style rescue of an American soldier – who it turned out was “rescued” from a hospital.

    And there was not a smidgen of a question in the immediate aftermaths of those events from the American media or mainstream American politicians as to the patriotism of the president, nor a hint of accusation that by having those Americans released, the respective presidents had endangered American security.

    Not a smidgen of doubt on those two questions, even though in one case, President Reagan literally armed an adversary, Iran (although his heart and his head seem to have had a difference of opinion on the matter) in order to secure the release of American hostages. And in the other, George W. Bush’s defense department staged a made-for-TV ‘rescue’ operation for Jessica Lynch and made up a story about her that she herself later confirmed was falsified.

    And that was appropriate. No matter how an American in captivity is brought home, America prided itself on never abandoning our people – no matter who they were, and the security bona-fides of the Commander in Chief who fashioned those operations were not called into question, because at one point in the not-so-distant past, the American media believed that those issues were above politics.

    The Republican patron saint didn’t stop at trading arms with Iran, of course. Reagan assisted the Sandanistas in Nicaragua with funds from the Iranian arms trade in direct contravention of Congressional dictate. Few, if any, Republicans repudiated Reagan then, let alone now, a time when Ronald Reagan has become more sacred to the wingbat GOP than the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

    Yet today, another president has arranged the release of another American prisoner of war from captive hands, and his patriotism, along with that of the rescued soldier, is called into question by the same elements of our politics who routinely extol President Reagan and who aided and abetted George W. Bush’s disastrous war policies.

    When I refer to these elements in our politics, I am not speaking merely of the unpatriotic, if not traitorous actions of the modern Republican party and its members in Congress, I am also talking about the media. USA Today last night released a poll, in which they found that 43% of Americans say President Obama mishandled the Bergdahl release, while 34% say he did the right thing. USA Today reported that story as if in a vacuum, claiming that it is the exchange of five Taliban members who were being held in Guantanamo for Bergdahl that Americans disapprove of.

    8.4 million dollars have been raised so far in the Salad Bars to Schools initiative.

    Since its launch in 2010, the partnership has granted 3,456 salad bars to 1,097 school districts nationwide.

    It was founded by Food Family Farming Foundation, National Fruit and Vegetable Alliance, United Fresh Produce Association Foundation, and Whole Foods Market as part of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign.

    40 cyclists will ride up the scenic California coast from Carmel to Lost Angeles in an October fundraiser called The Tour de Fresh. Each Tour de Fresh rider hopes to raise enough money to place one salad bar in a school for – $3,000 for the cost of the bar and accompanying utensils.

    Cantor Campaign Spent More On Steak Houses Than Opponent Spent On Entire Race

    House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s (R-VA) re-election campaign spent more money at steak houses than David Brat, who ended up defeating Cantor in the Republican primary, spent on his whole campaign.

    NBC noted that according to FEC campaign finance reports, Cantor spent $168,637 in payments at BLT Steak and Bobby Van’s Steak House in 17 payments up to May 21.

    By contrast Brat’s campaign spent $122,793 in the race.

    Cantor also raised far more than Brat in the race. Cantor campaign raised $5,447,290 and spent almost as much — $5,026,626. Brat raised just $206,663

    “And I think I need not remind anyone on this committee: like any American, Sgt. Bergdahl has rights,” Hagel said.

    “And his conduct will be judged on the facts — not political hearsay, posturing, charges or innuendo. We do owe that to any American, and especially those who are members of our military and their families. Like most Americans, I’ve been offended and disappointed in how the Bergdahl family has been treated by some in this country. No family deserves this.     Preliminary thoughts on Cantor’s loss

    This is huge.

    Eric Cantor is not just some backbencher. This is as big as when Tom Foley lost his seat in the Gingrich Revolution.

    And Cantor outspent his Teabagger opponent by 25-1. And lost. Humiliatingly.

    Cantor was the epitome of the GOP establishment. And that helped him not a jot.

    What this shows is that there is a ferment on the Right against politics as usual. But the Right is so far out of the mainstream that it opens a door for the center-left.

    If Democrats learn anything from tonight’s results, it’s that the GOP is vulnerable. All GOP candidates will now lurch to the right to avoid Cantor’s fate. And in doing so, they will be positioning themselves out of the mainstream. What works in a GOP primary does not work in a general election, as Mitt Romney showed.

    Gird your loins, Obots. Things just got interesting.

    In the aftermath of Eric Cantor’s epic, shocking 11-point primary loss to an underfunded xenophobic college professor, Hillary Clinton bestrides the globe like a colossus. There is literally no hope now that the Republican Party can do one thing to improve their performance with the Asian or Latino communities. In fact, since it is now evident that it is not sufficient to do nothing about immigration reform, but one must spend all day bellowing about the brown hordes crossing our border, Republican politicians are powerfully incentivized to loudly advertise their disgust with the changing demographics of the country. And they will. The GOP is guaranteed to do much worse with Asians and Latinos in 2016 than they did in 2008 or 2012.

    Think about this. Wall Street and the Chamber of Commerce and Agribusiness and the evangelical community all lobbied the House Republicans to pass immigration reform and they got nowhere. That is how incredibly racist the people are in these gerrymandered districts. When has the Republican Party ever before told those powerful conservative interests to go fuck themselves? Normally, when those groups speak, the GOP jumps to do their bidding.

    Eric Cantor didn’t lift a finger to pass a comprehensive immigration bill and he was voted out anyway because he wasn’t enough of a hard-ass on the issue.

    The effect of Cantor losing will be more important than the causes of his defeat. Some will argue that immigration wasn’t the only or even primary reason he lost. That won’t matter for presidential politics, because Republicans will behave very counterproductively in response to Cantor’s loss.

    But it’s true that these white, rural, conservative Christian voters have no reason to be happy with the Republican Establishment. The Republican Establishment has been a disaster on foreign policy. They have not brought back the lost manufacturing jobs. They have been losing the culture war. They haven’t overturned Roe v. Wade or stopped the march of gay rights. They haven’t stopped the dissolution of the nuclear family. They haven’t prevented a prescription drug epidemic in their communities. They’ve been losing elections.

    They have not been delivering in any tangible way.

    Except on guns. Guns, guns, guns. Look where that’s getting us by scanning the headlines over the past couple of weeks.

    The GOP ramps up the hatred of gays and blacks and Latinos and Muslims and “takers” and liberals and academics and teachers and journalists and scientists and urban-dwellers and secularists and…

    What is just breaking will probably dominate political coverage for the rest of the week: Eric Cantor has just lost his Republican primary to his Tea Party challenger. Even after trying to out-Teabag the Teabagger:

    Cantor’s campaign also sent out mailers arguing that he’s largely responsible for blocking immigration reform, signs, perhaps, that Brat seemed like more of a threat than he appeared publicly.

    Evidently, the “see I really really hate Obama too” campaign didn’t work out. Because when you try to outcrazy the crazy, the crazy always wins. Eric Cantor has stood in the way of everything President Obama has tried to do to make this country a better place: from health reform to jobs to immigration reform.

    But his and his party’s hatred towards the president bred only more hatred, and he himself has now fallen victim to that hate. The very anti-American hatred in the wake of an African American president that the Republican Party has from the beginning tried to make into an electoral tool is now consuming it wholesale.

    I am unabashedly gleeful at Cantor’s fate tonight. It is what he deserves. It is what his party deserves. Eric Cantor is a political arsonist – as is the entire Republican leadership – and no one should be sorry that they are being consumed by the fire of hatred they set.
