A Gleam of Renewal in Struggling Detroit
JUNE 17, 2014
Corktown, once a desolate strip just west of downtown Detroit, is a serious hotbed of new restaurants, bars, hotels and more, all sitting in the shadow of one of the most glaring icons of Detroit’s demise, the skeleton of the old train depot, Michigan Central Station. In this ailing city, people look at Corktown as a bright example of what rebuilding can do. The resurgence of Corktown, originally an Irish enclave, began with the 2005 opening of Slows Bar B Q. These days, thanks to low rents and a consumer base hungry for things to do, the area is now a vibrant community of passionate restaurateurs, stylish shopkeepers, meticulous coffee connoisseurs and craft cocktailers.
ASTRO COFFEE
Two former employees of London’s revered Monmouth Coffee Company opened this spot in 2011, and its impeccable genes are evident in its meticulous sourcing of beans from places like Ritual Coffee Roasters in San Francisco and George Howell Coffee in Acton, Mass. Visitors can flip through old issues of Monocle magazine in a quirky, industrial space with exposed brick walls and high ceilings.

McDonnell prosecutors allege undisclosed gifts from people other than Williams
BY MATT ZAPOTOSKY AND ROSALIND S. HELDERMAN
June 23 at 8:15 PM
Federal prosecutors have alleged that former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell (R) and his family accepted an expensive island vacation from a Henrico hotelier with University of Virginia ties and intentionally omitted the gift on his annual state disclosure forms, according to new court filings.
The May 2012 trip — a $23,000 getaway to Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina, paid for by U-Va. Board of Visitors Vice Rector William H. Goodwin Jr. — does not seem to have any direct connection to Jonnie R. Williams Sr., another Richmond-area businessman, whose relationship with McDonnell and his wife is at the heart of the federal corruption case against the couple.
But prosecutors argued in a court filing made public recently that the vacation was just one example of undisclosed gifts given to the McDonnells by people other than Williams. They said those gifts are “intrinsic” to the case and might be used to convince jurors that McDonnell’s alleged crimes were no innocent mistake.

When We Black People Say Racism Is Real, Please Believe Us
by xoJane — Jun 5, 2014
By now you’ve probably seen the viral video of the racist white woman going ballistic in a parking lot in Cheektowaga, New York (about 300 miles from Manhattan) for nearly four straight minutes, shouting the N-word at a black man in his car because, she says, he had frightened her two young children by, he says, starting his car.
Whatever the case, and I do mean whatever the case –- he could have walked up to those children and yelled “Boo! Yah mama’s ugly!” for all I care –- it’s still not grounds for blatant, audible, open, all the way loud and live racism. Not grounds for racism at all.
Because here’s the thing: When we black people say racism is real, please believe us. Watching this video, which reveals in cold, clear daylight an indefensible display of racism, I am alternately stunned by the wholly intended sting of it, and enraged by the many, many times I’ve had to argue the case that racism in America still exists, and could actually happen at any time, to any brown person, but always to black people.

A MacArthur Foundation study shows that black women in low-income neighborhoods are more likely to be evicted from their homes.
A MacArthur Foundation “How Housing Matters” (pdf) study reveals that while black men face alarmingly high incarceration rates, black women are disproportionately evicted from their homes.
According to the study, in any given year, approximately 16,000 adults and children are evicted in Milwaukee from approximately 6,000 housing units—that equates to 16 households evicted every day.
These startling statistics account only for court-ordered evictions and do not even touch on coercive tactics like paying unwanted tenants to vacate, housing condemnations and landlord foreclosures.
The brief was based on a recent study in Wisconsin, which followed 11 families through a string of evictions, analyzed 29,960 eviction records in Milwaukee County between 2003 and 2007, and conducted 251 on-site surveys at Milwaukee’s eviction court in January and February 2011. It offers a deep analysis of how evictions sets in motion a chain reaction that exasperates the well-being of already struggling, poor families.

Missing 8-month-old baby found safe in bushes near roadway
by Amanda Perez, KPRC | June 23, 2014 at 4:42 PM
HOUSTON, Texas — An Amber Alert has been canceled after a missing 8-month-old baby was found safe, abandoned in a vacant lot in Houston, Texas.
Authorities say the baby, Genesis Haley, was in her mother’s car when it was stolen early Monday morning at a Texaco gas station in north Houston.
Houston police say at around 1 a.m. Monday the baby’s mother left the sleeping baby in her running vehicle to go inside the convenience store. She then saw a suspect get into her vehicle and drive away.
Several hours later, Hong Nguyen was jogging when she heard a baby crying in some brush. She then called 911.
“I was very worried. It was scary,” she said

Grassley’s Hunt For An Obama Insider Trading Scandal Backfires On GOP
AP Photo / Jacquelyn Martin
Dylan Scott – June 24, 2014, 12:30 PM EDT
Early last year, Wall Street traders somehow found out that the Obama administration planned to make a policy change to Medicare before the news was even announced.
The flurry of stock trades in major health care companies that followed has since caught the eye of federal law enforcement as well as Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who has made investigating the matter one of his pet projects on the Senate Finance and Judiciary committees. In his search, Grassley has gone as far as to cast suspicion on the Obama administration as the source of the leak.
But in a twist, the Wall Street Journal reported last week that federal regulators and law enforcement officials have now focused their attention on a Republican health policy staffer in the House. A lawsuit filed on Friday by the Securities and Exchange Commission, first reported by the Journal, said investigators believe the staffer “may have been” the source of the leak. It also sought to force the staffer to turn over records to investigators, something he and the committee have reportedly refused to do despite being handed subpoenas.
The SEC lawsuit alleges that the House staffer, Brian Sutter, spoke with a lobbyist — identified by the Journal as Mark Hayes, who happens to be a former aide to Grassley — on the day of the leak. The suit alleges that Sutter was in touch with Hayes by both email and phone and that they discussed the upcoming Medicare policy change. Hayes then allegedly gave the information to a research firm, which distributed the flash that set off the trading, according to the SEC. A 2012 law, the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act, prohibits government officials from disclosing non-public information that could affect stock prices, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Grassley’s office declined to comment to TPM about the latest development. He has also reportedly made inquiries into whether an aide to Sen. Orrin Hatch, his senior colleague on the Senate Finance Committee, had any role in the leak. Additionally, according to Politico, he has raised questions about Hayes’s role in the leaks. But the Obama administration appears to have been Grassley’s initial and most public target when trying to identify the source of the leak.
Grassley has had suspicions about leaks from the Obama administration regarding health policy changes since at least 2011. For example, in a letter dated Dec. 12, 2011, the senator brought up his hunch with Marilyn Tavenner, who was then acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Grassley’s letter said he was in contact with a “whistleblower within CMS” who had accused top administration officials of meeting with lobbyists and hedge fund brokers in non-public settings.

Poll watchers warned in Mississippi
By Alexandra Jaffe
State officials in Mississippi are warning groups backing state Sen. Chris McDaniel that their efforts to organize poll watchers for Tuesday’s runoff might be illegal.
Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), the underdog in his primary runoff fight with McDaniel, has been pushing African-American and Democratic voters to turn out for him on Tuesday to try to expand his share of the vote.
Under state law, Democrats who did not vote in the first primary round are allowed to vote in the GOP runoff, but conservatives backing McDaniel have argued the law prevents voters from supporting a candidate in the primary that they don’t plan to back in the general election — making Cochran’s push potentially illegal.

4-Year-Old Busts Babysitter Who Claimed Black Robbers Broke Into House Burglarized By Her Boyfriend.
http://www.clutchmagonline.com/2014/06/four-year-old-busts-babysitter-set-home-invasion-lying-black-robbers/
A four-year-old Milwaukee girl is being called a hero after her honesty foiled a home invasion robbery plot by her 17-year-old babysitter and her 16-year-old boyfriend.
After her babysitter told police her employer’s home had been burglarized by two Black men, four-year-old Abby Dean chimed in set the record straight.
“Wednesday was the worst day in my life,” Abby told local Fox affiliate WITI. “They told us to get out of the house ’cause they wanted to steal stuff.”
After grabbing a number of items in the home, including Abby’s kitty bank, iPod, Xbox, and Wii, the babysitter told police that one of the robbers looked like the next door neighbor.
Cody Oaks, Dean’s neighbor, says police handcuffed him and questioned him for hours about the robbery, until Abby jumped in to tell authorities they’d nabbed the wrong guy.
“It wasn’t the right skin color,” the pint-size heroine said, noting the robbers were white, not Black. That’s when the babysitter cracked and confessed to the crime.
Oaks says the babysitter’s actions could have had tragic outcomes for him and his family, and he hopes she learns from this ordeal.
The babysitter and two accomplices were arrested and may face robbery, burglary and perjury charges stemming from the incident
UH UH UH. See how they mention Oaks’ name throughout and refer to the THIEVING THUGS as accomplices?
If it wasn’t for the little girl police would have made his life a living hell.
Cody should take these MOFOS to the cleaners for LYING ON HIM.
uh uh uh
Blame it on the Black man
Good Morning, Everyone. :-)
Good morning!
