Will black voters be House Democrats’ midterm firewall?

No one expects the Democrats to win the House when voters hit the polls this November.
In fact, historical trends say that in the sixth year of Obama’s presidency, the Democrats stand to fall into an even smaller House majority and potentially lose control of the Senate.
“Undoubtedly it is a very tough climate. The president’s party averages a net loss of 29 seats in a midterm election,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel said. “The biggest challenge we have is a drop off in our base.”
But the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, charged with making sure that seat deficit doesn’t grow any larger, is hoping to mobilize the same coalition of votes — specifically black voters — who propelled Obama to election and reelection to boost their candidates this fall.
“We have a unique challenge in offsetting drop off with African American voters, with Hispanic voters, and with young female voters,” Israel said. “So we’re tackling those challenges head on.
The DCCC has undertaken a new black voter outreach initiative — which the committee says is the most expansive and expensive project in the history of the DCCC — that has consisted of demographic focus groups, battleground polling, ad testing and renewed ground game in black neighborhoods.
In 15 of the top 25 House seats being targeted by the DCCC this cycle, African Americans make up at least 10 percent of the voting-age population. In close races that will likely be decided by just a few points, the DCCC believes boosting turnout among those black voters by just a few points could keep them be competitive in places they would otherwise lose this year.

The first female African-American barber in Asheville passed away Monday, at the age of 81.
She began cutting hair in the city back in 1957 and retired three years ago.
Along with her sense of style, Canady says she was a caring member of the community who reached out to customers as if they were family.
“There’s many youth who come here and leave encouraged to do better,” he tells us.

One dead, one critical after Chicago Loop shooting

A recently demoted worker entered a Loop office building Thursday morning and shot the company’s CEO before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide, authorities said.
The shooting happened just before 10 a.m. at the ArrowStream company on the 17th floor of the Bank of America building, 231 S. LaSalle St.
“Apparently he was despondent over the fact that he got demoted,” Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said.
The company’s CEO, Steven LaVoie, 54, was in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, authorities said.
The alleged shooter was identified as Anthony DeFrances, a 59-year-old employee who had been told on Friday that was being demoted as the company downsizes, police said.
The firm sells supply-chain management technology.
That block of LaSalle was closed to traffic as police officers flooded the scene.

NYT: U.S. Attorney Tells Cuomo To Back Off Witnesses In Ethics Probe

The U.S. attorney investigating New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision to shutter an anti-corruption commission earlier this year has warned the governor against tampering with witnesses or otherwise obstructing the inquiry, the New York Times reported Thursday.
Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, sent the warning in a letter to Cuomo’s office Wednesday. The letter appears to have been prompted by Cuomo’s office reaching out to members of the commission to ask them to make public statements defending its work, according to the Times.
“To the extent anyone attempts to influence or tamper with a witness’s recollection of events relevant to our investigation, including the recollection of a commissioner or one of the commission’s employees, we request that you advise our office immediately, as we must consider whether such actions constitute obstruction of justice or tampering with witnesses that violate federal law,” Bharara’s office wrote in the letter.
The Times revealed last week that Cuomo’s office stymied the commission’s investigations into some of the governor’s political associates. Cuomo also closed the commission eight months ahead of schedule, after the New York General Assembly passed a legislative package that many watchdog groups considered insufficient.
Bharara has since picked up some of the investigations that the commission left unfinished and launched an inquiry into why Cuomo shut it down.

The Wealth Gap Across Race, Gender and Marriage Status

Here is a chart that not only shows the staggering wealth gap across the divides of race, gender and marriage status. It also maps many of the key dynamics and fault lines driving contemporary American politics.
The chart illustrates a pattern that most of us probably do not find surprising. But the sheer chasm separating single white men from Black and Hispanic single women is still shocking to see visualized so clearly. Single white men have 438 times the assets as single Black women and 365 times that of single Hispanic women. As we can see, marriage is a huge determinant of wealth – but mainly if you’re not white, and especially if you’re a woman.
Note that the chart provides data for wealth with and without vehicles (in most cases, cars). Here I’ve referenced the latter statistic. As the report notes, owning a car is an important way to access more employment opportunities among other things. But that wealth is not easily accessible in dollar terms, which is highly relevant for the following reason. Great disparities of wealth not only have a huge impact on life opportunities and the prospects for wealth accumulation. They are hugely important factor in the precariousness of economic life experienced by different demographic groups.
At essentially zero net wealth, individuals are one job less, illness or major expense away from debt (often incurred at usurious rates) or even homelessness.

A popular piece of legislation that seeks to honor Pope Francis is stuck in Congress.
With time running out on the Capitol Hill calendar, the lawmakers who crafted the bipartisan measure are getting impatient with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).
The resolution, written by Reps. John Larson (D-Conn.) and Pete King (R-N.Y.), congratulates Francis on his March 2013 election and recognizes “his inspirational statements and actions.”
The seemingly innocuous resolution was referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which hasn’t acted on it. The panel didn’t comment for this article.
The inaction and the lack of a white smoke signal from Boehner have sparked speculation that politics is at play.
Only 19 of the 221 co-sponsors are Republicans. The dearth of GOP members on the measure could be attributable to assertions that the pope is “too liberal,” according to a Republican backer of the legislation.
The source noted that Francis last year denounced “trickle-down economics.”
Some Republicans believe the pope is “sounding like [President] Obama. [The pope] talks about equality — he actually used the term ‘trickle-down economics,’ which is politically charged,” the GOP official said.

Texas legislator uses sometimes-slur for Cajun in discussion of ‘Katrina children’

A Texas state legislator used the term “coonass” — a word for Cajun that some consider offensive — when talking about Louisiana students who had to attended school in the Lone Star state following Hurricane Katrina.
Texas state Rep. Dennis Bonnen made the comment during a state government hearing, while comparing the cost of educating children from Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina to the cost of educating children from Central America arriving on the United States border.
“I want to be clear — a Katrina child is far different. We can make jokes and pick on Louisiana and it’s fun and all that, but it’s a hell of a lot different bringing a kid over from Louisiana than a child who’s just made a treacherous journey,” said Bonnen initially, according to a video from Progress Texas, a left-leaning organization.
A few seconds later, Bonnen — who is a member of the Texas House political leadership — went on to say: “There’s a significant difference. We had to have a teacher who could do coonass in English, but here we have to do Spanish and English, maybe, and there’s a higher marker.”

How I Became Aware of the Israel/Palestine Conflict

I was interested in politics at an unnaturally young age. I was born in 1969, but I was actively supportive of Jimmy Carter’s campaign for the presidency in 1976. I still remember one girl who voted for Ford in our second grade straw poll, and I never forgot her perfidy. I remained fiercely loyal to Carter when he was challenged by Teddy Kennedy, but I flirted with the candidacy of John Anderson. I actually watched the Republican debates in 1980.
I first became aware of Israel during the Camp David talks, and they were a great success for President Carter. I guess I thought the problem was solved, and I didn’t really think about it one way or the other. I certainly had no understanding of the underlying issues.
The first time I actually had to confront the Israel-Palestine question as a moral quandary might surprise you. Through the mists of time, I might get some details wrong. But I can kind of reconstruct it, I think. It must have been in 1982, shortly after Israel invaded Lebanon. I remember seeing on the news that Yasser Arafat was on the run and might be in the sights of Israeli gunships. The portrait that was painted was that Arafat was in imminent danger of being assassinated.
Now, I had internalized that Arafat was a bad man. He was a terrorist. But I also remembered him smiling and shaking hands with Menacham Begin on the White House lawn. I didn’t understand what was going on, but I guess I figured that the Palestinians must have gone back on their word. I was not inclined to be sympathetic to Arafat, but I didn’t exactly harbor any ill will towards him, either.
So, the next day, I went over to the house of a classmate after school. There I found my friend’s mother in a state of great concern for the well being of Mr. Arafat. She was adamant that the Israelis were committing some grave injustice and seemed horrified that they might kill Arafat. This confused me greatly because my friend and his mother were as Jewish as Jewish people can be. Why was she taking the side of the enemy?
But she convinced me that it would be a terrible thing if Arafat was assassinated and I remember having trouble going to sleep that night because I had joined her in her great concern.
As it turned out, either the Israelis never actually had a bead on Arafat or they decided that it would cause too much trouble to kill him. He survived and I was relieved, even though I still had no real idea why I should be relieved.
This all happened when I was twelve or thirteen years old. I would only really begin to learn about the Middle East when I took a class on the subject during my senior year in high school.
