2 teens wounded in shooting at Bud Billiken Parade

The sights and sounds of Saturday’s 85th annual Bud Billiken Parade quickly turned from joy to horror when an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were shot and wounded while standing in the 4200 block of South King Drive. along the parade route.
“Why can’t we just have one day of peace?” paradegoer Sherri Grover shouted to the crowd as police attended to the victims.
“I just ask that the gangbangers stop the violence, please,” Grover said. “This is the one day for our children.”
Witnesses said several babies and a woman in a wheelchair were nearby when the two were shot.

Audrey Johnson, 45, of Chatham, said she saw six young men jump the victim, then shoot.
“I’m sick of these kids,” Johnson, who dove when she heard the shots, said through tears. “Why can’t they just fight and get it over with? Why they gotta shoot? Why? There were babies everywhere, a woman in a wheelchair. How is she going to get away in that wheelchair? How?
“You’ve got thousands of babies out here,” she said. “I’m disgusted. What are all these kids supposed to do? Just dive down to dodge bullets? This is a day the kids wait for — the Bud Billiken. We wait for the parade.”

Polls Show GOP Base Has Impeachment Fever, Even As Party Leaders Run From It

Bereft of many good options ahead of the November midterms, Democrats have been eager to use the fringe impeachment chatter as a cudgel against Republicans. The gambit has not gone unnoticed on the right.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said late last month that Republicans “have no future plans” to impeach President Obama, scoffing at what he described as a “scam started by Democrats at the White House” to gin up the base and raise money.
But the idea — however quixotic — clearly annoys Boehner more than the voters he hopes will turn out en masse in November.
Polls conducted last month by CNN/ORC, Fox News and Rasmussen Reports all found close to 60 percent of Republicans in favor of impeaching and removing Obama from office.
Each poll found that wide majorities of the public at large — and virtually every other demographic group — oppose impeachment.
The lack of an appetite for impeachment outside of GOP circles explains why Boehner and various conservative media luminaries have been so dismissive of the idea.
When Fox News isn’t giving a platform to those who favor the course of action, its coverage of the issue has focused largely on its political incentives for Democrats.
Commentator Charles Krauthammer argued in both his syndicated column and on Fox this week that the White House is attempting to “bait” the GOP into pursuing impeachment with Obama’s planned executive action on immigration.
“Such a calculation — amnesty-by-fiat to deliberately court impeachment — is breathtakingly cynical. But clever. After all, there is no danger of impeachment succeeding,” Krauthammer wrote. “There will never be 67 votes in the Senate to convict. But talking it up is a political bonanza for Democrats, stirring up an otherwise listless and dispirited base. Last Monday alone the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised more than $1 million from anti-impeachment direct mail.”
The gang on Fox’s “The Five” devoted the opening to Thursday’s program to addressing Krauthammer’s point.
“All it takes is one Republican to talk of impeachment,” co-host Andrea Tantaros said. “That’s all they really need. I mean, no one’s really talking about impeachment now and the Democrats are talking about it. It does seem like a trap. It does seem like they’re setting up Republicans.”
It should be noted that less than an hour before Tantaros made that declaration, Fox News analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano appeared on the network to make a case for impeachment.

I don’t know how they ask these impeachment questions. If you go up to some random dude on the street ask him if he thinks the president should be impeached, that’s a lot different from asking whether he thinks it would be a good idea for the House Republicans to impeach him considering that the Senate would just acquit him. In other words, you aren’t asking a political question. You aren’t asking a strategic question. You aren’t asking what the random man thinks the House Republicans ought to do. You’re basically just asking some random man whether he’d personally like to see the president removed from office. So, it’s not surprising that 60% of Republicans answer in the affirmative. I’m surprised it isn’t higher.
Now, if you ask these people why they think the president should be impeached, you will probably hear them repeat some hash of Benghazi and Fast & Furious and Solyndra and ObamaCare and IRS and tyranny. Maybe you’ll hear something about the NSA, but that’s more likely from independents and Democrats. Overall, most of these folks will mention something that is either entirely made up or is completely overblown. It will be something they heard on hate radio or watched on hate television. This is what makes them think the president deserves to be impeached, but they’d want pretty much any Democrat removed from office because they don’t like Democrats.

Woman, 78, caught with cash in girdle at airport

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) â A 78-year-old Florida woman tried to fly on an international trip from Detroit Metropolitan Airport with almost $41,000 in cash hidden inside her girdle, bra and carry-on bag, federal authorities said.
A complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Detroit said the Clearwater woman was trying to board a flight April 2 to the Philippines with her daughter. She initially said she had $200 in cash but submitted a form declaring she had $1,200, prompting questions.
During a search, Customs and Border Protection officers found $8,000 in wallets in her carry-on bag, $4,000 sewn into a cloth pouch and nearly $1,000 in envelopes, according to the complaint. She then told them she had $3,000 in her blouse and $2,000 sewn into the strap of her bra.
Officers continued to search and said they found about $21,000 in her girdle. The woman told authorities that she had recently sold her home for $120,000, wired some money to the Philippines and had planned to carry a portion of the money with her.
“She stated that she did not wire the proceeds to the Philippines this time because she thought it was safer to carry the money,” according to the complaint.
Federal law requires travelers to declare if they are carrying more than $10,000. The woman hasn’t been charged, but the government in the forfeiture complaint said it wants to keep the money. The Detroit News reported details of the request Friday.

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. It doesn’t matter where America’s black elite winters.
Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard is where it summers.
Here, black women with skin tightened by the sea salt wear diamonds casually with bathing suits. And pampered black children run through the seaweed and splash in the cold water of the “Inkwell,” a town beach. Black men with trim gray beards carry about them that understated pride that comes with accomplishment.
Oak Bluffs, an integrated village on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, has been called the Black Hamptons, a place where for generations black people have owned cottages and pastel Victorian houses with wide porches and screen doors that slap in the wind. And fine retreats perched on cliffs with panoramic views of the blue coast where Washingtonians gather, invited to exclusive dinner parties where ice clinks in cocktail glasses. And philanthropic meetings of the famed Cottagers, an exclusive group of black women property owners who require members to summer here for at least four weeks consecutively. “Once you sell,” one woman says, her make up perfect, “you are out.”

“It gives us an opportunity to network with other upwardly mobile African Americans,” Baxter says. “We love bringing our children here. They can see if you work hard, get a good education, you can partake of the American dream.”
Janice Queen, 63, a program analyst from Prince George’s County, has taken her family all over the world on cruises, but she comes here for peace, a family atmosphere: “I could bring them here to the Inkwell and they could stay as long as they wanted. And there is no fear of anybody bothering them.”
This is a picture of black America few people see: moneyed black families at leisure.

Five key things to know about O’Bannon vs. NCAA

On Friday, Judge Claudia Wilken of the U.S. District Court in Oakland, Calif., dropped a bombshell on the NCAA, handing down a 99-page landmark decision that struck down a key component of how college sports conducts business.
In Ed O’Bannon, et al, v. the NCAA, Electronic Arts and Collegiate Licensing Company, Wilken ruled that rules limiting compensation to college athletes “unreasonably restrain trade” in violation of antitrust laws and issued an injunction against rules that forbid athletes from earning money from the use of their names, images and likenesses in video games and on broadcasts. “The Court finds that the challenged NCAA rules unreasonably restrain trade in the market for certain educational and athletic opportunities offered by NCAA Division I schools,” Wilken wrote. She added that the restraint “could be achieved through less restrictive means” without destroying the structure of college sports.
There’s a lot to be determined in the wake of the ruling, which will be appealed by the NCAA, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
1) Although the decision represents a victory for college athletes, there’s a little something for both parties in the decision. Wilken set a cap on the money the NCAA must pay athletes for the use of their names, images and likenesses so long as it allows at least $5,000 per athlete per year of competition for players at the big Football Bowl Subdivision and basketball schools. That would, at maximum, come down to $20,000 per athlete over four years. If the school does not use players’ names, images or likenesses, there would be no money to be placed in trust and an athlete would be limited to receiving the cost-of-attendance scholarship.

Big Dog Loose In Coal Country
As I’ve been saying, Bill Clinton was always going to end up stumping for Alison Lundergan Grimes as her ace in the hole. Her daddy Jerry and Big Dog go way back. The former president’s appearance Wednesday with Grimes in Perry County, the heart of Kentucky coal country, was there to remind everyone why the last Democrat to win a presidential election in the state was Clinton himself.

You may not like Big Dog that much, and you may not like the fact that Grimes is running as a Clinton Democrat when Obama is president. Tough titties, kids. This is how Kentucky politics rolls, and King Coal still calls the shots. That means Grimes is going to have to stump with Bill here and not Barack. She’s going to remind voters in the mountains that the last time things were good there is when Bill was in charge, and that since then Mitch the Turtle has given the store away from hard working miners to nasty energy companies who don’t give a damn about safety and wages and the people who live here, because they don’t.
So yeah, that means playing the Clinton card with gusto, and doing it several times between now and November. Bill Clinton’s still real big here, and you play to win.

My daughter works for the post office. They’re starting Amazon package delivery on Sundays and she’s in ministry. The post office says they don’t care about anyone’s religious beliefs so she will have to work and there goes her ministry. Can anything be done or no? Please give me your feedback.
First off, your daughter should be commended on taking this sacred step into the ministry.
I don’t think the UPS is going to open up that can of worms, so to speak. For instance, someone could came into work and say I can’t work on Sundays, because I want to watch NFL on Sunday. It’s not about religion,
They want to remain neutral, so folks who come to work, have to accept their rules/reg/policies.
Basically, your daughter is going to have to decide which is more important, her ministry or the job.
How come the Hobby Lobby case can’t be used for employees with religious beliefs?

‘Aunt Jemima’ Heirs File $2 Billion Lawsuit Against Pepsi and Quaker Oats

Suit alleges Quaker Oats wrongfully procured Anna Short Harrington aka Aunt Jemima’s recipes and failed to pay royalties for her recipes and image to her family after her death
D.W. Hunter, the great grandson of Anna Short Harrington, the woman who became “Aunt Jemima,” has filed a class action lawsuit against PepsiCo, The Quaker Oats Company, Pinnacle Foods Group and The Hillshire Brands Company on behalf of all of her great grandchildren. He is seeking $2 billion, plus punitive damages to be determined at trial.
Hunter alleges that the companies conspired to deny that Harrington had been an employee of Quaker Oats, all the while exploiting her image and recipes for profit, while refusing to pay an “equitable fair share of royalties” to her heirs for more than 60 years.

FICO to discount medical debt from credit scores
New rules will improve credit scores, help lenders better assess risk

A move by personal credit score provider FICO to leave out or discount medical debt from its scores will boost the credit ratings of many borrowers, while helping lenders to better assess risk.
Moreover, FICO won’t consider past overdue bills borrowers have already paid, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. The new score will be available to lenders through U.S. credit reporting agencies starting this fall, FICO said.
Lenders have become extremely wary of any blemishes on borrowers’ credit scores, following the economy-crippling sub-prime mortgage crisis of the late 2000s, where banks wrote predatory adjustable rate mortgages for years to people who were not creditworthy. As the house of cards collapsed, their interest rates shot up to levels they couldn’t pay.
With FICO’s new rules, negotiated between lending groups and the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), that era of tight lending practices could be coming to an end — increasing the chances that borrowers will get their loan applications approved or pay lower interest rates.
The FICO change comes after the CFPB said in a report this year that credit scores overly penalize people with medical debt compared to other types of debt.
“Given the critical role that credit scores play in consumers’ lives, we welcome steps by industry to adjust how it weighs medical debt in order to be as precise as possible in predicting the creditworthiness of a consumer,” a CFPB spokesman said on Friday.
In the previous arrangement, after a debt collector calls, a consumer might pay the debt immediately but still take a hit to his or her credit score, according to the CFPB.

Wisconsin is the Only State Where Black and White Women’s Life Expectancy Gap Grew
A new journal report says Wisconsin was the only state to see a widening life expectancy gap, between black and white women

There was discouraging news this week about the health of Wisconsin’s black residents, especially women.
The journal Health Affairs published a report about life expectancy and the gap between black and white Americans. Wisconsin was the only state to see the gap widen between from 1990-2009.
The disparity between black and white women grew by more than 1.5 years, while there was a slight uptick among men.
Geoffrey Swain doesn’t mince words, when referring to the new life expectancy numbers.
“If you want to be healthy as a black person, you do not want to live in Wisconsin,” Swain says.
Swain is medical director for the City of Milwaukee Health Department and a professor in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Peck says action could include exploring how certain factors contribute to the poor health and shorter lifespan of black women.
“We may want to ask questions about toxic stress in women’s lives, with the underlying issues of income and joblessness and poverty and being single parents and having a life that’s truly more difficult,” Peck says.

First body buried at ‘abusive’ Florida reform school ID’d: 14-year-old missing since 1940
Researchers have identified the first of 55 bodies found at the Dozier School for Boys as 14-year-old Owen Smith. He went missing in 1940 when he was a student at the reform school. Since 2008, more than 500 men have claimed they were raped and beaten on the Marianna campus.
