It clearly shows the depth of white privilege in this photo. 0 A sundown town is a town, city, or neighborhood in the US that was purposely all-white. The term came from signs that were posted stating that people of color had to leave the town by sundown. They are also sometimes known as “sunset towns” or “gray towns”.[1]

History

In some communities, signs were placed at the town’s borders with statements similar to the one posted in Hawthorne, California, which read “Nigger, Don’t Let The Sun Set On YOU In Hawthorne” in the 1930s.[2] James W. Loewen, the Washington, D.C.-based author, told The Washington Post in 2006 he found reports of thousands of such places, and sometimes, the sign makers tried to get clever. “Some came in a series, like the old Burma Shave signs, saying, ” . . . If You Can Read . . . You’d Better Run . . . If You Can’t Read . . . You’d Better Run Anyway.”[3]

The community doesn’t want them there so local community activists met with the Open Carry people yesterday.

“I’m going to tell you something homie, this is Fifth Ward, you ain’t coming in here running nothing,” community activist Quanell X said while flanked by members of the New Black Panther Party, who were holding assault rifles.

“You’re coming into the Fifth Ward and to the black community as insurgents,” said Krystal Muhammad, with the New Black Panther Party.

“I beg your pardon?” said David Amad, with Open Carry Texas.

    Antonio French
    Ward 21 Alderman

Alderman Antonio D. French is serving his first term as the Alderman of the 21st Ward, representing parts of the neighborhoods of The Greater Ville, Kingsway East, Mark Twain, Penrose, and O’Fallon, where he was born and raised. Prior to becoming Alderman he served the 21st Ward as the Democratic Committeeman and managed numerous winning political campaigns as the president of his own consulting firm.

During his time on the Board, French, one of the youngest city aldermen, has earned a reputation for passionately serving his ward and creating new initiatives to improve the quality of life in north St. Louis. In 2010, the Riverfront Times named him “Best Local Politician”.

Last year, his “Block by Block” partnership with the non-profit Rebuilding Together and Boeing resulted in the rehab of more than 50 homes for seniors and disadvantaged homeowners.

His partnership with the Sheldon Concert Hall has led to two successful summer jazz concert series in O’Fallon Park, helping to revitalize that beautiful public park.

In cooperation with the St. Louis Police Department, he created “safe zones” for hundreds of children in north St. Louis to trick or treat on Halloween night.

On the Board of Alderman he serves on the following committees: Neighborhood Development; Parks and Environment; Public Utilities; Transportation and Commerce; Ways and Means; and he serves as the Vice Chair of the Committee on Convention, Tourism, Arts & Humanities. Last year he passed a bill creating a public arts trust fund in the city. He is a member of the African American Aldermanic Caucus.

FERGUSON • St. Louis Alderman Antonio French emerged Thursday morning from a night in jail after his arrest at the Ferguson protests to say that the police officers’ “heavy-handed” approach on the streets is making the situation worse.

French said he has no documentation that says why he was arrested, and that he was released about 7 a.m. today without having to post any bail.

No police spokesman was available to explain why French was arrested.

French said he should never have been locked up, nor should the dozen or so others at the jail overnight.

“Inside that jail is nothing but peacekeepers,” he said. “They rounded up the wrong people … reverends, young people organizing the peace effort.”

Police arrested about a dozen people Wednesday night, including French and two national reporters. Police used tear gas and sonic cannons to disperse the crowds. Today, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is scheduled to visit Ferguson in the wake of the growing protests.

I’ve got a lot of rage this morning, black boys and black men are being executed in the streets of America and some people act as though this shit is normal. I can tolerate the injustice of what happened in Ferguson, but I cannot tolerate the indignity of what happened in Ferguson. A black boy was executed and we are supposed to act sane, when have we not acted sane? When have we not acted sane in the face of an execution that has happened to black men for centuries here in America? When are we going to stop being executed? I don’t want to hear nothing about holding hands and singing songs, I don’t want to hear nothing about people coming together and talking. We don’t need to come together as a community and try to pray this shit away. The only thing we need is to have our black boys and black men not shot down like animals, can you please stop killing us.

Two Americas: Ferguson, Missouri Versus the Bundy Ranch, Nevada

Bob Cesca on August 14, 2014

As we noted yesterday, we can’t help but to contrast law enforcement’s reaction to protesters in Ferguson, Missouri versus law enforcement’s reaction during the Bundy Ranch fiasco.

    1) The Bundy Ranch: On one hand, a large group of armed white men marched in a line of battle while at least one civilian rifleman in a sniper’s perch trained his weapon at Bureau of Land Management officials. In reaction, the government didn’t fire a single round or canister of tear gas, and eventually retreated, conceding the disputed ground to the Bundy militias. It’s important to note that the protesters turned out in support of a man who refused to pay his taxes and grazed his cattle without paying the accompanying fees. This man, Cliven Bundy, and his supporters threatened secession and armed revolt against the United States goverment.

    2) Ferguson, Missouri: On the other hand, unarmed African American protesters in Ferguson, enraged and grieving from the death of an (again) unarmed black man named Michael Brown who was shot in the back by a police officer, have been confronted for several days now by police in full military regalia. This time, the rifleman in the sniper’s perch is a police officer — his scope trained on the protesters.

In Ferguson, law enforcement is vastly overreacting in the face of peaceful protesters, while at the Bundy Ranch, law enforcement vastly underreacted in the face of armed secessionists and scofflaws.

What’s wrong with this picture? Better yet, what’s wrong with the following pictures?

  19. rikyrah says:

There’s a police coup going on right now in Ferguson, Mo.

The tear gas was practically still in the air in the fall of 1968 when the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence — yes, that was a thing — formed a working group to probe the civil disorder that had just occurred at that year’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago. It was there, some will recall, that police in baby blue helmets clubbed and dragged bloodied anti-war protesters through the streets, while TV viewers looked on and crowds chanted, “The whole world is watching.” To describe the incomprehensible scenes, the so-called Walker Commission coined a new term. They called it a “police riot.”

There’s been no police riot in Ferguson, Mo. — not yet anyway (and hopefully never). But what is happening in the working class suburb just outside of St. Louis is, in some ways, far worse. A tense situation in the aftermath of Saturday’s fatal shooting by a police officer of an unarmed college-bound 18-year-old named Mike Brown has been made much more tense, night after night, by brutal, bone-headed policing that makes one wonder if Birmingham’s brutal Bull Connor has been re-animated.

I thought I was losing my capacity to be shocked — but events in Missouri over just the last couple of hours have crossed a frightening line, one that makes me pray that this assault on fundamental American values is just the aberration of one rudderless Heartland community, and not the first symptoms of nation gone mad with high-tech weaponry to keep its own citizens in line.

This afternoon, several hundred citizens who gathered on a public street, in broad daylight, to air their grievances over Brown’s killing were met with a massive SWAT team, an armored personnel carrier, and men in camouflage pointing heavy artillery at the crowd. Two prominent credentialed journalists who tried to report on the event were arrested for a time, and there was a report that a state senator who questioned authorities about tear gas earlier was also in custody. All this as authorities continue to cover up the most basic information about what happened on the night Mike Brown was murdered.

8-13-14 – ( CNN ) – Tiffany Mitchell, another eyewitness to the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson last weekend, spoke out on CNN tonight. She told Don Lemon she saw Brown trying to pull away from the officer moments before he was shot. This comes days after a friend of Brown’s who witnessed the shooting said the police officer is “guilty of murder.” Mitchell said Brown had started running from the police officer, and the officer ran after him, firing his gun. Then, she said, “the kid’s body jerked as if he was hit from behind and he turned around and he puts his hands up like this and the cop continued to fire, and he just dropped down to the ground.”

She described the officer in question as a tall, white male, and told Lemon she heard at least five or six shots.

And in addition, another person connected to Mitchell, who she was picking up in the neighborhood, was also witness to the shooting, and Mitchell’s lawyer said her account provides the same information about what happened that day.

    Excerpt:

“A Washington Post reporter was one of two journalists arrested and thrown in a booking cell while covering the unrest in a St. Louis suburb roiled by protests over an unarmed teen’s death at the hands of police, an arrest the newspaper’s executive editor called illegal and unjustified.

Wesley Lowery said he was slammed into a soda machine and arrested after recording officers who ordered everyone to leave a McDonald’s restaurant in Ferguson, as demonstrations against the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown happened nearby. Also arrested was Huffington Post reporter Ryan Reilly.

“That behavior was wholly unwarranted and an assault on the freedom of the press to cover the news,” Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron said in a statement. “After being placed in a holding cell, he was released with no charges and no explanation. He was denied information about the names and badge numbers of those who arrested him.” Both were later released without charges.
