*Note to Governor Jay Nixon: “Curfew” = SUNDOWNING to Black People! How About Arresting Darren Wilson?

Tweet of the Day

Will someone tell Gov Jay Nixon people will be calm when the murderer is arrested? It’s not rocket science.’

Word! And the longer they hold off bringing charges against Darren Wilson, the more they’re complicit in further inciting the citizens of Ferguson.

Trying to cage the Ferguson folks in like animals via curfew is not the answer, Governor Nixon. The  citizens of Ferguson don’t need protection from each other, they need protection from the POLICE.

If you want to maintain calm, then you’d better start with the FERGUSON, MO POLICE DEPARTMENT.

Deal with the looters and hooligans; there’s no need to issue a curfew. But the FPD is inept in dealing with black folks as FULL HUMANS!

It’s only when there is tension and anger they react to black folks and it’s by 1.Harrassing, profiling shooting-murdering, dehumanizing manner 2. issue that curfew, because it’s a means to control.

Charge Darren Wilson with MURDER!

Mike Brown’s Family Asked To See Robbery Footage Before Police Released It To Media, But Were Ignored

    by Jeff Spross

Posted on August 17, 2014 at 12:17 pm

One of the Brown family’s attorneys told ABC that the family was not shown a surveillance tape of their son allegedly committing a robbery before it was released to the media, nor were they given a chance to positively identify their son in the video.

A week ago on August 9th, an unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown Jr. was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, sparking an ongoing wave of confrontations between protesting Ferguson residents and local law enforcement. On Friday, August 15th, Ferguson police released a convenience store surveillance video that purportedly shows Brown engaged in a strong-arm robbery — shoving a clerk to take some cigars from the store — the same day he was killed.

Anthony Grey, a local lawyer in Ferguson, told ABC’s This Week that the Brown family was not shown the video before it was released to the press, even though they had requested “to see any video footage before it was released.” Nor were they given the chance to positively identify Brown in the video.

“They were appalled by it,” Grey told an ABC reporter on Sunday morning. “They saw it for the first time – a glimpse of it — on nationwide TV. They had requested an opportunity, through the attorneys, to see any video footage before it was released. That request was not honored.”

“No one was given the opportunity to authenticate it was Mike Brown Jr. in the video.”

John Legend: ‘Black And Brown People Are Just Treated Differently In This Country’
    Posted: 08/16/2014 11:40 am EDT

At a private performance Friday evening in Santa Monica, California, singer John Legend discussed the upheaval in Ferguson, Missouri, bluntly. “Black and brown people are just treated differently in this country,” he said to a room of about 150 people.

“One of our original sins in this country has been racism and slavery. And we still haven’t figured out how to solve that problem,” Legend said during an on-stage discussion with KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley in between sets. Given the news of this week, it’s no surprise that the fatal shooting of Michael Brown at the hands of police officers in Ferguson quickly came into the conversation.

“We’ve given our police these military-style weapons, and you know, it’s a mess,” Legend continued. “But this is not new. The weapons are only exasperating it. But this was happening with Bull Connor in the ’60s, this was happening with lynchings well before the ’60s, where there were all kinds of extralegal ways for black folks to get killed and for black bodies to not be valued in this country.”

Legend noted that even today, unarmed black men are shot on a regular basis. “It’s like every 28 hours — some cop or vigilante kills an unarmed black man. It just shows you that we still have a long way to go. We could do better. And hopefully we will.”

Officer Darren Wilson Lives in Crestwood, Black Population 1.3%

Ferguson’s police department hasn’t shared much about officer Darren Wilson, who they say shot and killed unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown on Saturday. But USA Today visited Wilson’s home today in Crestwood, Missouri.

The geographic difference between Ferguson and Crestwood is tiny—a short 26 miles away. But the demographic differences are severe. In 2012, the median household income in Ferguson was $36,121; it was nearly double for Crestwood, at $64,724. And while Ferguson is a largely black city where 64.9 percent of residents are black, Crestwood’s black population is tiny, at just 1.3 percent. Wilson previously worked in nearby Jennings, where the black population is 86.1 percent.

Wilson has policed two cities with majority black working class populations. Cities that look nothing like the one he calls home.

There is no excuse, absolutely no excuse for Daren Wilsonbeing allowed to leave town and not being held for questioning.

They can aleast tell the citizens of Ferguson that Darren Wilson is being held somehwere and questioned about the killing of Michael.

That curfew was self-serving and meant to control the black citizens of Erguson and reassure white folks that the negroes would not be coming around their neighborhoods from 12-5 am.

  23. Ametia says:

After another night of protests in Ferguson, Missouri, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder today approved a second autopsy on the body of Michael Brown.

The second autopsy, which was requested by the Brown family, is in addition to one being performed by the state.

    Existing While Black
    By Martin Longman

In the Washington Post, Manuel Roig-Franzia, DeNeen Brown and Wesley Lowery have a nice overview of the problems in Ferguson, Missouri that takes into account the perspectives of the black citizens of that town and the towns around it. A common theme is that it isn’t safe to drive, which is interesting because Mike Brown was on foot when he was executed by a police officer in broad daylight on the street.

In interview after interview, black men and women talked about their fears of random stops while driving in the city, as well as in neighboring municipalities.

Marcus White, an acquaintance of Brown who works for a moving company, said he frequently has to spend the night in his employer’s office because he can’t find anyone to drive him home to Ferguson.

“They’ll tell me, ‘I don’t go past Goodfellow,’ ” he said, referencing one of the streets near the line that separates the county of St. Louis from the city of the same name.

Many here have their own catalogue of towns that they dare not drive through. They sketch long, circuitous routes to avoid the small areas where they feel most targeted, a concern buttressed by statistics that show far higher numbers of traffic stops involving African Americans than whites in the St. Louis suburbs.

“More than four people in the car, they’re going to pull you over,” said Earl Lee Jr., a 41-year-old warehouse worker who lives in a nearby suburb. “Tint on your windows, they’re going to pull you over. Too early in the morning, they think you’re up to something. Too late, they think you’re up to something. When are you supposed to drive?”

t’s this presumption of criminality that gnaws away at the black community’s relationship with the police. It’s bad enough to have to always be thinking about how to avoid the suspicion of the police.

“Is it too late to drive to my friend’s house?” “Too early?” “I’m certainly not going to use that car.” “No, you can’t come, we already have four people in the car.”

This is considered good policing in a lot of this country. See a car with tinted windows? Pull them over; tell them their tail light isn’t working; check them out; tell them their tail light is working again; let them go.

They don’t do this to white people in white neighborhoods. They just don’t.

Tension Flares In Ferguson After Police Blockade Street
    By karoli August 16, 2014 6:00 am

Earlier Friday evening, protests had been peaceful and relatively calm. But as midnight approached, SWAT teams appeared and the mood changed. It began with police ordering protesters and press out of the street, instructing them to return to their cars and leave, or to go home.

Protesters who were interviewed expected all of the media focus to be on the looting and not the unexpected SWAT presence at the scene of the protest. They were angry about that, in various conversations they had with reporters.

Like clockwork, CNN emphasized the looting, assuming it was protesters. In fact, protesters were the ones guarding the stores and chasing looters away.

In one short interview, a protester standing in front of the store’s entrance said “The police don’t care about us. Why should we have to do their job when they’re standing right there?”

    Why, indeed.

In a poignant moment, one of the young men helping to guard the store had an Al Jazeera reporter talk to his mother on his phone. She was crying over the possibility of her son being killed for guarding — not looting — that store.

  29. rikyrah says:

this was in the comments at TOD:

    sandyhh • a day ago
The Ferguson police chief deliberately provoked a riot yesterday. He deliberately caused more tension and made things worse out of spite.

Chief Jackson didn’t want to release the name of his officer that was
involved in the shooting. So when he was forced to do so by other
authorities in the state, he made a deliberate decision to release
information that was not pertinent to the investigation of the shooting.

His only motive was to smear the reputation of the victim to divert
attention from the actions of his own officer knowing it would set off
more violence….and taint the jury pool of the eventual trial. Nobody takes over his streets, especially an uppity black state trooper?

The Ferguson Police Chief only succeeded in making the store in the video a target and probably never having it open again. Isn’t that special?

It is clear that Chief Jackson is not a professional law enforcement
officer. He’s a brute who enjoys manipulating others. His primary goal
as head of the Ferguson police department is to keep the black residents
“in their place” not to protect and service the entire community. His
police force follows his lead. He must be fired.

Let’s see if the Ferguson City Council has the guts to end this stand off by doing the right thing. As they and everyone else in the St. Louis County political structure seem afraid to stand up against this small town tyrant, the young people there feel compelled to continue their protests on the streets.

When there is injustice and youthful hormones at work, there will be
confrontations. Chief Jackson knows it and obviously revels in how he
can make it worse. How much longer and how much worse this can get is
    yet to be seen.

If only these kids could be made to see that they have to register to
vote and do it in every municipal as well as national election, they
would have the power they don’t have now. Jesse Jackson has told them this before, but they no longer believe their vote counts (if they even are allowed to vote with all the new voter suppression laws) anymore than the Bill of Rights in the Constitution pertains to them.

Chief Jackson has poisoned the well and he slept one happy man last
night as the looting began again. This situation is a travesty for our
    Republic.

Post Racial America is turning out to look just like Selma in the 1960s.

I’m wondering just how much authority they actually gave Capt. Ron Johnson. It’s sounding more like they (=white state political leaders) just chucked him out there out of shear desperation, hoping he’d settle things down, and if worse came (comes) to worse, make him a fall guy.

If that wasn’t obvious before, here’s how it went in the press conference: after announcing the curfew, Governor Jay Nixon (white) introduced the head of the Missouri Highway Patrol (also white) who spoke for about fifteen seconds to say that here was Capt. Ron Johnson to explain the curfew and how it was going to be implemented. I mean it was a fucking joke. White guy top boss (Nixon) introduces white guy head of highway patrol who has clearly ordered black guy (Johnson) to do the dirty work.

Captain Johnson did not seem to like the decision to have a curfew. His body language and tone was very different from what we’ve seen before. After announcing it and saying a tiny bit about timing, etc. he pivoted to what he is best at–speaking to the community in a more personal way. They love him, it’s clear.

At one point in the press conference, the attendees were yelling out questions at Jay Nixon who clearly was out of his depth. He leans over to the highway patrol head and Johnson and whispers something and they send Johnson up there to answer the questions. Seriously. Jay Nixon couldn’t handle the questions from his own constituents. They have to send the black highway patrol guy up there. It was appalling. Jay Nixon is a disaster.

Race and Beyond: Correcting the Media’s Skewed Perspective

By Sam Fulwood III | August 13, 2014

Alarmed and frustrated by the news reports of a police officer shooting and killing an unarmed black teenager last weekend in a St. Louis suburb, C.J. Lawrence, an attorney from Jackson, Mississippi, monitored the horrific scenes as they unfolded on traditional and social media outlets. Through it all, Lawrence imagined what it might be like if he was the subject of the media’s unflinching stare.

Eighteen-year-old Mike Brown was shot shortly after noon on Saturday in Ferguson, Missouri, a predominately African American community of about 21,000 people just northwest of the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Details surrounding the shooting remain sketchy, but the outrage is undeniable, sparking protests against the police. Some rioting and looting occurred on Sunday night, and police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. More-peaceful protests took place Monday night as marchers challenged police with shouts of “Don’t shoot me!” Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation opened on Monday a civil rights inquiry into the shooting.

    ……………………………….

Lawrence, 33, is a self-described social activist who uses the Twitter handle @CJ_musick_lawya. He noticed one aspect of the coverage that drew his focused ire. Nearly all the reports of the shooting repeatedly showed Brown, who would be entering college this month, in a photo from his Facebook account, unsmiling and standing on a porch while flashing a hand sign of his thumb and first two fingers extended. Some speculated he might have been a gang member. Rarely did Lawrence see another, less provocative, and less menacing photo from Brown’s Facebook account—like the photo of him with a half-smile, wearing headphones at a video arcade, or the one of him in his high school cap-and-gown regalia. Those images would have told a different, more affirming, or at least value-neutral story in line with Brown’s life as a typical high school kid.

So Lawrence offered up a cyber challenge to his Twitter followers. He tweeted a pair of photographs of himself: one of him delivering a 2003 commencement address at Tougaloo College as President Bill Clinton laughed in the background and another of him clowning for a camera with a Hennessy bottle filled with cola. And he posed a hashtag question for his followers: #IfTheyGunnedMeDown, which photo would flash across television screens and newspaper front pages?

The reaction went viral. Almost immediately, friends and strangers posted their own two portraits, offering complex versions of their lives as scholars, workers, family members, and caregivers juxtaposed with playful images of them scowling, flashing finger signs, holding weapons, and drinking alcoholic beverages.

Melissa Harris-Perry’s Searing Tribute To Black Men Killed By Police
The Huffington Post | By Jack Mirkinson

    Posted: 08/16/2014 2:31 pm EDT

In a short but powerful segment on Saturday, Melissa Harris-Perry connected the recent police killing of Michael Brown to the deaths of other black men at the hands of police — and to America’s history of injustice towards black people.

Harris-Perry read the names of some of the hundreds of men who were killed by police across the country “in the past decade alone,” from Sean Bell to Oscar Grant to Eric Garner to Brown. All of the men she mentioned were unarmed at the time of their death.

In the past decade alone, these men and hundreds of others have lost their lives to police.

“From 2006 to 2012 a white police officer killed a black person at least twice a week in this country,” she said.

I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of these African American pundits who seem to think they have all the answers and that no matter what president Obama does, it is not enough. Whether he was speaking about creating an even playing field for young minority boys via My Brother’s Keepers, about Trayvon Martin or in the case of Mike Brown of late, some people, especially the folks notoriously now known as blackacademics, have no shortage of criticisms.

In the case of Trayvon Martin for instance, while everyone were touched by President Obama’s statement about the kid slain by an overzealous neighborhood watchman, in his warped mind and blinded by his contempt and jealousy, Tavis Smiley, who never sees President Obama doing anything right only saw the president being pushed to the Podium.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/21/tavis-smiley-obama-trayvon-martin-pushed-podium_n_3631739.html.

In recent days, as we deal with the shocking murder of Mike Brown, for Melissa Harris Perry and Michael Eric Dyson, president Obama did not go far enough on his statements calling for calm in the city of Ferguson. Never mind that the people of Ferguson and the young boy’s family were thankful to the president. Dyson took to the Ed Schultz show to do one his over the top, verbose rants about the president, prompting my even-tempered husband to ceremoniously switch the channel. Harris, on her show, proceeded to compare president Obama to Lyndon Johnson and Dwight Eisenhower, who to her thinking fell short in rising to the occasion.

So today as we look at the looters who distract from the message of holding the Ferguson Police accountable for the death of Mike Brown, look no further than these blackacademics, who will be booked on shows after shows to talk about President Obama and how he has not done enough for black people. How he is not speaking to black issues, how he is not creating jobs for black people, how he is not creating health care for black people. They too, like he looters, will be a major distraction. Tomorrow, Dyson and Cornel West will serve that purpose.

The producers who book these self-promoting pundits on their shows are not interested in learning the truth about Darren Wilson, how he shot the child in cold bloody murder. Instead, they want to engage in the usual bashing or dinging of President Obama. That is their sole goal.

What have these people, some who are older than President Barack Obama, ever done for black people, instead of manipulate black issues to satisfy their own agendas?

    Perhaps, nothing?

  54. Diversity training is way too late for Chief Jackson. Time for him to go. He built this bish & now it’s out of control. He needs to RESIGN!

  55. Black citizens of Ferguson have been victimized by the racist police for years and now by the Governor. When will you learn, @GovJayNixon ?

  56. Black people in #Ferguson don’t wanna hear ISH about security. That should be a given. Just do your job! Black people want to hear when is the FPD gonna arrest this bish?

    • Ametia says:

Telll the truth, SG2. It’s so demeaning & insulting. tGov thinks he’s making the he folks in Ferguson safety, that he’s looking out for them. Nope! He’s getting calls from white folks, his white constituents. “QUELL THOSE NIGGAS!

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

      x 2 @SG2’s comment!

Issuing that curfew is very DECEPTIVE, Gov. Nixon.

THE CURFEW BLAMES THE CITIZENS OF FERGUSON!, INSTEAD OF KILLER COP, FPD INEPT, RACIST CHIEF JACKSON & FPD’S PISS POOR ARREST OF POC!

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

I don’t think the Black community is/can be satisfied when a governor speaks in generalities about blatant police misconduct by the Ferguson Police Department and the execution-style killing of an unarmed, surrendering Black teen by Ofc. Darren Wilson.

Just look at these generalities that I have put in bold print from this excerpt from the Governor Nixon’s speech. This indicates to me that the Governor has no plans for dealing with the issues in the future……I see him avoiding the issues by such examples as I have put in bold print.

The tragedy shooting death of Michael Brown one week ago today and the events that followed left a family grieving the loss of a son, a community racked by fear and unrest, and an entire world looking for answers and justice.

Over the past several days I’ve heard from the people of Ferguson. I’ve heard their anger about injustice and intimidation. I’ve seen and heard the unspeakable sadness of a mother who won’t see her son again and the anguish of parents though out the region struggling to teach their kids to trust amid so much strife.

      • Ametia says:

        1. Yes it’s tragic, MURDER

        2. Michael is not a loss. He was gunned down and MURDERED. Hr is dead-gone-will not be returning.

        3. It’s not strife- It’s called racial profiling, intimidation, harrassment, police brutality. inequality, UNJUST laws.

THERE, GOV. NIXON. FIXED IT FOR YOU!

      • yahtzeebutterfly says:

That’s just how I would have fixed it, Ametia!

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

Take care of the looters and arrest them…..but don’t have a curfew.

      • Ametia says:

That’s too hard. They don’t want to be bothered with looters. It’s easier to shut in all the negroes from midnight to dawn!

      • yahtzeebutterfly says:

These guys don’t have a clue about history and the steadfast determination of Blacks who have been wronged. Have they forgotten about the firmness of the people who walked for a WHOLE year during the Montgomery Bus Boycott??
