Chief Jackson’s strategy is to pretend that the police are the victims. It’s obvious! Yet, the police are gassing the Black citizens of Ferguson and criminalizing them for protesting.

  2. GrannyStandingforTruth says:

I said this once and I’m gonna say it again. The governor sent the National Guard to protect the police, not the citizens. First time I’ve ever heard of the National Guard being under the command of the Highway Patrol, but we all know that Capt Johnson has no real authority and taking orders from Captain Jackson. I have a bad feeling about it in the pit of my stomach. The whole incident is B.S. Remember what I said.

  3. The attack on protesters are to stop them from speaking out and to deter any other people from ever protesting again.

  4. Police are abusing the hell out of black citizens. Police told protester you will exercise your first amendment right when I TELL you.

Stonewall Jackson blocks justice for Michael Brown

    By Jonathan Capehart
    August 18 at 6:00 AM

For more than a week, we have watched and read with astonishment the stunning ineptitude of Ferguson, Mo., Police Chief Thomas Jackson. “We couldn’t care less” appears to be his and his department’s motto. Not about the residents of that tense Missouri town, not about state and local federal officials trying to keep a lid on tensions and not even about their own reputation. Each Jackson appearance is followed by an immediate facepalm. And little tidbits in the Sunday papers only add to the negative impression.

Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer who shot and killed unarmed African American teenager Michael Brown, didn’t call in the shooting. In its gripping story about how Brown would meet Wilson on Aug. 9, The Post reports how the St. Louis County police dispatcher couldn’t get any answers from the Ferguson PD after getting calls about a police-related shooting.

In audio recordings released last week and confirmed by authorities as authentic, a St. Louis County police dispatcher indicated that Ferguson police were unaware that an officer was involved in the shooting.

The dispatcher noted that she had received two calls about an “officer-related shooting” on Canfield Drive.

“We just got another call about an officer-involved shooting . . . there,” she said.

A few seconds later, the dispatcher said she couldn’t get confirmation from the police in Ferguson. “We just called Ferguson back again, and they don’t know anything about it,” she said.

Baden revealed that the Ferguson PD lied in some KEY areas

    1. There were at least 6 shots fired (that hit Brown). The Police Chief said not more than 2 shots were fired.
    2. There was no evidence of a struggle – Ferguson PD claimed that Brown was “trying to reach for Darren’s gun”
    3. Bullets were likely fired from a distance of at LEAST 2ft or more – again, inconsistent with Ferguson PD’s claims that there was a struggle.

I went to bed early and missed this whole thing when all hell broke loose in Ferguson last night. Wow. Those cops are dangerous and completely out of control.

But this morning I was wondering if the DOJ might move forward on their case where normally they wait for the state to take action (or not take action.) AG Eric Holder ordering an autopsy suggests that he either doesn’t trust the state’s evidence or he’s moving forward with the Feds full investigation as quickly as possible so that DOJ can file charges.

If it’s the latter, then I like it. It could set a precedent when these cops decide to commit murder. I’m not aware of anything that would preclude the DOJ from charging the cop before the state makes a decision. We know that they aren’t going to arrest the cop and charge him, they are protecting him, because too many folks there in Missouri have their own agenda regarding race. One dead black kid executed by a cop means nothing to them even though we are living in the 21st century.

My take. The Ferguson police chief watched the church rally for Michael Brown, with all of the speeches from activists. All of the people coming together. The plans to change conditions in Ferguson. Townspeople cleaning up again today, like they were going to make it through this, and get stronger together. So, the chief decided to “take back” his town tonight, pre-curfew. One last one for the gipper, so to speak. Surely tomorrow the governor will send in the MO National Guard … because the outrage over tonight will be long-reaching and is already palpable. It’s my guess the chief wanted to take a stand and has the prosecutor behind him.

I just don’t know what to think. According to what folks have written about Ferguson last night- the cops were responding with tear gas to “shots fired & malotov cocktails thrown’ – and yet with all the media out there, I’ve seen not one bit of proof of this. Only proof of cops firing gas into crowds with children/ disabled and other protestors.. 3 hours before curfew. The only “looting” I’ve actually seen proof of, is when protestors broke the McDonald’s window in order to get MILK to poor on the faces of folks who’d been gassed. And Now Gov Nixon has sent out the National Guard.. who, I wonder will they be protecting? Are they not being sent to reinforce the police? I have yet to see one move by this governor that has “protected” the people from the police.. even Capt Johnson said he wouldn’t gas people- and yet wasn’t he out there last night? All the people of Ferguson have asked for- is transparency.. to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice.. and yet that is not being done, in fact it is not even being addressed by the Gov, the cops or even Capt Johnson. I realize there is an ongoing investigation… yet if Mike Brown and shot and killed police officer Darren Wilson- he would, at minimum, be locked up right now.. and things would be moving quickly and radically to ‘bring him to justice’. How does a whole town become the enemy of their own police force- the police force they pay taxes to “protect and serve” them?? How is any of this justified? And now the actual military is being brought in.. now the town IS under siege. I have zero trust in the authorities at this point, their judgement has been skewed from the start.

Outstanding comment and right on point!

I just transcribed this John Oliver excerpt from one of his shows last week:

      John Oliver – – –
All of which brings us back to this week and Ferguson.

So how do you improve things there? Well, you could demilitarize the police force to stop things looking like this (4 militarized police aiming their guns at a calm protestor with hands up.) But that would just change the optics.

The substance of the problem would still be there as was embodied by a police officer on the streets of Ferguson this week who was dressed entirely normally. (Oliver plays video of police officer saying,
“Bring it! All you fucking animals. Bring it, I don’t give a fuck.”)
That kind of statement betrays an inability to see the citizens of Ferguson as individuals and instead treat them as a threatening whole.

And, that is a top down problem. Because last night this is how the Governor of Missouri decided how to rebuild trust between the police and the community – – –Video of Gov. saying, “I signed an order declaring a state of emergency and ordering implementation of a curfew in the impacted area of Ferguson.”

      Back to Oliver:

Oh, perfect. So you took a community tired of being treated as criminals and imprisoned them all in their own houses for a night. And, in doing so, employed the tone of a pissed off vice-principal trying to restore order at assembly.

Video of Gov: “If we’re going to achieve justice, we must first have and maintain peace. This is a test.
The eyes of the world are watching.”

      Back to Oliver:

That is profoundly patronizing. Look let’s see if you all can remain quiet for 20 minutes and then we’ll see if you all can go and play outside.

If even the Governor can’t distinguish between the good and the bad elements of the community and decided to punish everyone equally then that should go both ways. I know the police love their ridiculous, unnecessary military equipment.

      So, here’s another patronizing test:

Let’s take it all away from them, and if they can make it through a whole month without killing a single unarmed Black man, then and only then can they get their fucking toys back.

Anyone else aware that police in Ferguson have not been wearing name tags or they have them turned around so that one cannot see their name or badge number.

I guess do that if/when they “control the crowd” too excessively that no one can know their names.

Funny that, as a hospital employee, I’m required to wear my badge at all times even if I’m at lunch or break. So that patients know that I work there and can ask for aide if need be. But I guess PD doesn’t need to worry about that.

I sure there reasoning is not nefarious at all.

    A Movement Grows in Ferguson
    By Jelani Cobb

In the eight days since Michael Brown, an eighteen-year-old, was killed by a police officer named Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, what began as an impromptu vigil evolved into a sustained protest; it is now beginning to look like a movement. The local QuikTrip, a gas station and convenience store that was looted and burned on the second night of the protests, has now been repurposed as the epicenter for gatherings and the exchange of information. The front of the lot bears an improvised graffiti sign identifying the area as the “QT People’s Park.” With the exception of a few stretches, such as Thursday afternoon, when it was veiled in clouds of tear gas, protesters have been a constant presence in the lot. On Sunday afternoon the area was populated by members of local churches, black fraternity and sorority groups, Amnesty International, the Outcast Motorcycle Club, and twenty or so white supporters from the surrounding area. On the north side of the station, a group of volunteers with a mobile grill served free hot dogs and water, and a man stood on a crate, handing out bright yellow T-shirts with the logo of the National Action Network, the group led by Al Sharpton.

The conversation here has shifted from the immediate reaction to Michael Brown’s death and toward the underlying social dynamics. Two men I spoke with pointed to the disparity in education funding for Ferguson and more affluent municipalities nearby. Another talked about being pulled over by an officer who claimed to smell marijuana in the car as a pretense for searching him. “I’m in the United States Navy,” he told me. “We have to take drug tests in the military so I had proof that there were no drugs in my system. But other people can’t do that.” Six black men I spoke to, nearly consecutively, pointed to Missouri’s felon-disfranchisement laws as part of the equation. “If you’re a student in one of the black schools here and you get into a fight you’ll probably get arrested and charged with assault. We have kids here who are barred from voting before they’re even old enough to register,” one said. Ferguson’s elected officials did not look much different than they had years earlier, when it was a largely white community.

Ferguson had, instead, recently seen two highly visible African-American public officials lose their jobs. Two weeks before Brown was shot, Charles Dooley, an African-American who has served as St. Louis County Executive for a decade, lost a bitter primary election to Steve Stenger, a white county councilman, in a race that, whatever the merits of the candidates, was seen as racially divisive. Stenger lobbed allegations of financial mismanagement and incompetence, and worse. Bob McCulloch, the county prosecutor appeared in an ad for Stenger, associating Dooley with corruption; McCulloch would also be responsible for determining whether to charge Darren Wilson. In December, the largely white Ferguson-Florissant school board fired Art McCoy, the superintendent, who is African-American. Those who were gathered at the QuikTrip parking lot on Saturday were as inclined to talk about the underlying political issues as they were about the hail of bullets that ended Brown’s life.

What I Did After Police Killed My Son

Ten years later, we in Wisconsin passed the nation’s first law calling for outside reviews.
    By MICHAEL BELL
    August 15, 2014

After police in Kenosha, Wis., shot my 21-year-old son to death outside his house ten years ago — and then immediately cleared themselves of all wrongdoing — an African-American man approached me and said: “If they can shoot a white boy like a dog, imagine what we’ve been going through.”

I could imagine it all too easily, just as the rest of the country has been seeing it all too clearly in the terrible images coming from Ferguson, Mo., in the aftermath of the killing of Michael Brown. On Friday, after a week of angry protests, the police in Ferguson finally identified the officer implicated in Brown’s shooting, although the circumstances still remain unclear.

I have known the name of the policeman who killed my son, Michael, for ten years. And he is still working on the force in Kenosha.

Objectivity of prosecutor in Missouri shooting of Michael Brown is questioned

    By Kimberly Kindy August 15

St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley on Friday said he is leading an effort to remove the county prosecutor from investigating the Michael Brown case because he thinks the prosecutor’s personal experiences and recent statements have tainted his ability to act objectively.

Brown, a black 18-year-old, was fatally shot by Officer Darren Wilson last Saturday in Ferguson, Mo. Wilson is white.

Dooley’s spokeswoman, Pat Washington, said there have been long-standing concerns among many black leaders in the community regarding County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch’s ability to handle such cases because his father was killed in the line of duty when McCulloch was 12 years old. The man who shot his father was black.

Most recently, she said, Dooley feels McCulloch crossed a line when he publicly criticized a decision this week by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) to bring in the State Highway Patrol to lead efforts to quell the violent street protests that erupted after the shooting of Brown.

“He injected himself in a matter in a way that further exacerbates the community distrust of him,” Washington said. “Rather than stay focused on the investigation, the prosecuting attorney decided to wade over into a whole other area and challenge the governor. He inflamed the community, which already distrusts him.”

Washington said Dooley had called the state attorney general’s office to determine how a special prosecutor could be appointed in place of McCulloch and was told there was a petition process for doing so, which he is looking into. Dooley was planning to meet Friday night with several local and state elected officials who Washington said have voiced similar concerns about McCulloch, but she declined to identify who would be at the private meeting.

Let us be clear. There’s been a smear campaign against this young man.
Melissa, when we look at the fact that the Police Chief would release a tape alleging that he shoplifted…let’s quit talking about robbery….his is at best shoplifting…minutes before his death and was forced to admit it had nothing to do with the death. It shows a real contempt for even a young man who hasn’t even been buried yet.

And, this is the kind of thing that is causing the outrage of a lot of the young people in this city. We are saying to them that we understand and share your anger, but don’t go mad and don’t get ahead of the family’s pursuit of justice.

So, we’re dealing with all of that while we’re calling on the Justice Department.

This is a DEFINING MOMENT: Can America deal with how it is policing its citizens. This is what it is going to come down here, Eric Garner’s case in New York, the case of Pinnock in L.A.

America’s got to come to terms with policing. That’s the overall challenge here.

Stop The Looting And Vandalism Of Ferguson Shooting Investigation

Tommy Christopher on August 17, 2014

As the crisis in Ferguson, Missouri enters its second week, developments on the ground have mostly centered on the degree to which violence is being handled. Police have shifted gears several times in that regard, but little is being done to prevent the violence being done to the investigation of Mike Brown’s killing.

Since Friday’s treacherous press conferences by Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson, the situation on the ground in Ferguson has taken several dramatic shifts. Jackson’s decision to release surveillance footage from a “strong-arm robbery” that allegedly involved Michael Brown angered residents, who again took to the streets to protest Friday night. In a scene that was extensively chronicled on the indispensable Twitter feed of Alderman Antonio French (D-Ward 21), looters were met by protesters who guarded the entrances to local businesses, including the Ferguson Market & Liquors where the alleged “strong-arm robbery” took place:

At the request of local leaders, including Alderman French, police did not engage with the looters, for fear it could escalate the situation. There were, however, engagements between police and protesters.

On Saturday, Governor Jay Nixon (D-MO) held a press conference at which he announced a state of emergency, and a midnight curfew for the City of Ferguson. Residents were angered by the announcement, and let Nixon know it, particularly at about the fifteen-minute mark:
