3 of the most binge-watch worthy shows on television in the last 4 years gotta be Breaking Bad, Scandal and House of Cards.
Many a weekend have been lost in front of NetFlix, watching episodes
back-to-back because those shows are thrilling. But all three shows are
also amazing because they have some of the most cold-blooded,
calculating, and callous villains in TV history. Gustavo Fring (Breaking Bad), Rowan Eli Pope (Scandal) and Francis Underwood (House of Cards) are three of the most conniving bastards this side of the Equator.
All three of them give so few dambs that they actually OWE some
dambs. Satan went to 3rd grade with Rowan, tutored Frank and babysat
Gus. Whew. And I am wondering what would happen if they had some sort of
Goon Off. Who would win in a battle of the villains? This is not an
easy question. Let’s explore.

Part of the problem with the Jonathan Gruber “stupid” story is that it’s a shiny object for the political world to stare at for a while. It offers more heat than light. It’s a bouncing ball for political insiders to chase after, despite its relative insignificance.
But since it’s likely to soon be the subject of congressional hearings, and since your crazy uncle who watches Fox News all day will be talking about nothing else at Thanksgiving, let’s grudgingly tackle this week’s Most Important Story Of All Time As Agreed Upon By Republicans And The Beltway Media.
Congressional Republicans seized Wednesday on controversial comments made by a former health-care consultant to the Obama administration, with one leading House conservative suggesting that hearings could be called in response as part of the GOP effort to dismantle the law in the next Congress and turn public opinion ahead of the 2016 election.
“We may want to have hearings on this,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), an influential voice among GOP hardliners and a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, in an interview at the Capitol. “We shouldn’t be surprised they were misleading us.”

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Net Neutrality

So Tuesday President Obama announced that he wanted the FCC to regulate broadband internet as a public utility, the way phones are regulated, in order to keep the internet free from “fast lane/slow lane” deals, site blocking, and to make internet more available to Americans.
Apparently somebody forgot to tell FCC Chairman (and former cable lobbyist mind you) Tom Wheeler, because it looks like none of this regulation stuff is going to happen.
Hours after President Obama called for the Federal Communications Commission to pass tougher regulations on high-speed Internet providers, the agency’s Democratic chairman told a group of business executives that he was moving in a different direction.
Huddled in an FCC conference room Monday with officials from major Web companies, including Google, Yahoo and Etsy, agency Chairman Tom Wheeler said he preferred a more nuanced solution. His approach would deliver some of what Obama wants but also would address the concerns of the companies that provide Internet access to millions of Americans, such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable and AT&T.
“What you want is what everyone wants: an open Internet that doesn’t affect your business,” a visibly frustrated Wheeler said at the meeting, according to four people who attended. “What I’ve got to figure out is how to split the baby.”
So it looks like Wheeler answers to the internet giants, not the President.

US student Caitlyn Ricci sues parents for uni fees
ANOTHER US woman has sued her parents to make them pay for university — and she’s won.
The parents of New Jersey 21-year-old Caitlyn Ricci have been ordered to pay US$16,000 ($18,300) for her tuition at Temple University in Philadelphia, even though she hasn’t lived with them for two years and doesn’t talk to them, according to NJ.com.
A judge cited a 1982 landmark case, in which the state Supreme Court ruled divorced parents are responsible for providing for their child’s education.

Last Call For An Orange Boy Named Sue

Orange Julius is responding to the news that President Obama will soon take executive action on immigration by threatening to expand the House GOP’s lawsuit against the President for being from a different party or something.
House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) is considering expanding a proposed federal lawsuit over President Obama’s executive orders to include action on immigration. Filing a separate lawsuit over the president’s authority to protect millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation is another option that gained traction Thursday during talks among party leaders.
The idea to use the courts as an initial means of dissent, should the president move forward in the coming weeks to protect millions from deportation, moved to the front of the House GOP’s playbook after the leadership reviewed it. Boehner reportedly wants to respond forcefully and quickly should the president act and believes a lawsuit would do that, as well as signal to conservatives in his conference that he shares their frustrations about the president’s use of executive power.
Several Republicans who spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid confirmed Boehner’s outlook and the thrust of the leadership’s discussions. They cautioned that any final decision by House Republicans will be made only after consulting rank-and-file members in the wake of a White House announcement — if the president decides to issue executive orders on immigration.
Ahh, now you remember, the lawsuit where the House GOP can’t get any actual lawyer to take it up because it’s so patently stupid.

A Discriminating Palate

And Sen. Rand Paul embarrasses Kentucky again by going on an epic rant against workplace discrimination laws, all but declaring that there is no discrimination that laws preventing discrimination doesn’t create in the first place. Paul showed up at a confirmation hearing of David Lopez and Charlotte Burrows to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and screamed at the nominees about why the commission even existed.
“Do you realize the downside of the unlimited nature of going after people with no complaint and what this is going to do to business? I mean, do you not understand what we’ve got to somehow balance that we want people to have jobs?” he asked Lopez.
“How can you show up to work with a straight face?” he demanded. “I don’t understand why you wouldn’t resign immediately and say, ‘This is abhorrent.’”
“This is so against what everything America stands for,” he blustered, “that you would go after people where there’s been absolutely no complaint, run them through the wringer and use the threat of the bully nature of your office to punish business and as a consequence punish their workers. I don’t get it.”
Paul went on to describe the agency’s investigative practices as “entrapment” and “a crime.”

White People Don’t Get It Because They Never Had to

A month or so ago, I watched the Gwen Ifill Town Hall in Ferguson. A White male spoke in a way where I knew he didn’t “get it”. Phillip Agnew of the Dream Defenders (http://dreamdefenders.org/vest/about-us/) gave an excellent delineation of repression. Cut to: a White male, Ross Kaminsky, he said, “I get the feeling. I understand this feeling of, uh, the system isn’t fair, it’s biased against us. But then, when you start going to this idea that 400 years of repression in a system that’s still designed to hurt us and still designed to keep us down, that starts feeling to me, like uh, racism against me just because of the color of my skin. My parents weren’t here 400 years ago…” (see the clip, here: http://video.pbs.org/video/2365331269/). I’m sure you know where he was going.
Ever since I was a child, I keep seeing these interactions repeat. Black people talk about hurt, White people don’t “get it”. And, always, Black people seem to be evolving but White America does not. It isn’t as simple as “they don’t really care about us.” There is a deeper issue at play. It’s embedded. Empathizing with Black people has never been a part of the visual culture. White people have been so privileged, in the visual landscape, that they don’t have the ability to step into the shoes of others, especially not Black people.
How is it still possible that many White people still don’t understand the unfairness woven into the fabric of American society? The images we abhor, the constant parade of White men in power, White women in jewels, lit with a halo, aren’t merely about the creation of beauty standards. These images also convey rules of engagement. These images, since the beginning of film and television in America, have laid the dynamics for interaction in the culture.
I am astounded when I hear people say that movies and television are “just entertainment”. Or, that visuals have very little weight in the construction of identity or culture. WRONG! Visuals create identity. Even if we come from homes where we read books, where there was an air of Black pride, we are still shaped by what we see. Even when I’m around the most progressive and radical voices in the culture, I still see an identification with, a need to be accepted into American culture. A classic and, on the surface, silly example, is Snoop Dogg. I’ve always found it interesting that Snoop Dogg identified with Snoopy. Snoopy was the clever, marginal, watchful character who provided the cool. He observed the culture of the Peanuts, he wasn’t part of the group. That’s Snoop Dogg.
We all ingest mainstream images and they show up in our life, somehow. If you don’t see yourself, how do you create identity? One can argue, this is why “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder” are so important. There are Black women to identify with. Images shape our identities, or, sometimes, we become them. I critique because I understand the power of the visual and how it is situated in our subconscious.

Reginald Latson’s path to solitary confinement began four years ago as he waited for the public library to open in Stafford County, Va.
Latson, known as Neli, has an IQ of 69 and is autistic. Teachers and therapists describe him as generally sweet and eager to please.
He is also a black man, now 22, who on the day in question was wearing a hoodie — which prompted a concerned citizen to call police about a suspicious person loitering outside the library.

Morning Plum: Democrats want compromise. Republicans don’t. That’s bad for Democrats.

We keep hearing — from pundits, and Republicans and Democrats alike — that last week’s electoral outcome shows that “the American people” just want the parties to work together and make government function again.
But this isn’t quite right. Yes, a lot of Americans want more generic “compromise.” Democrats and independents want compromise. But Republican voters in particular don’t want compromise.
A new Allstate/National Journal/Heartland Monitor poll finds that surprisingly few Americans who identify with either party think unified government under their own party would make their lives better. Instead, a majority of Americans thinks they would benefit more from “Democrats and Republicans compromising more to solve problems in Washington.”
But look at the breakdown, provided by Ron Brownstein:
This also popped up in a recent Pew poll. It found sizable majorities of Americans think Republicans should try to work with President Obama and that Obama should work with them. But here again, there’s a stark partisan difference. 52 percent of Democrats and Dem-leaning independents think Obama should find common ground with Republicans, even if it disappoints them. But only 32 percent of Republicans and GOP-leaners say the same on their side, while 66 percent of Republicans say their leaders should stand up to Obama even if less gets done.

Right pans Bernie Sanders’ ‘Democracy Day’ idea

About a week ago, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) unveiled legislation to make Election Day a national holiday. It’s not a bad idea – plenty of folks might want to vote on the first Tuesday in November, but face scheduling restrictions. Early voting is available in many states, but not all.
Many have suggested moving Election Day to a weekend, but if that’s not going to happen, it’s not unreasonable to think voter participation would improve if there were a declared “Democracy Day,” as Sanders suggests.
“In America, we should be celebrating our democracy and doing everything possible to make it easier for people to participate in the political process,” Sanders said in a statement. “Election Day should be a national holiday so that everyone has the time and opportunity to vote. While this would not be a cure-all, it would indicate a national commitment to create a more vibrant democracy.”
So what’s wrong with this? Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything, though National Review appears to have some concerns.
If Bernie Sanders has his way, “Democracy Day” will be the crowning holiday of America’s dystopian future. Imagine: Everyone in slab-gray uni-gender tunics and biodegradable Crocs, all lined up in perfect uniformity to cast a legally mandated vote for the single party that remains. Democracy! Pharrell’s “Happy” will play over loudspeakers in the background. On loop.

Can White Teachers Be Taught How to Teach Our Children?

A North Carolina teacher tells students that killing all black people is on her bucket list if she only has 10 days to live. The principal of a middle school in Brooklyn, N.Y., promotes learning a foreign language to prospective students and their parents with a reminder that “if you don’t speak Spanish, you’re going to clean your own house.” And third-grade teachers at an Atlanta-area elementary school assign homework math problems about slavery, beatings and picking cotton.
The stories make the rounds on social media, and the outrage peaks and fades. Yet there is a huge cost to having educators like these—inept at teaching and leading racially diverse learners—in our schools. The overt racism of George Wallace standing in the schoolhouse door and the National Guard escorting black children through taunting and jeering crowds is from a bygone era.
Still, racial prejudice in public education is alive and well. A more subtle form, perhaps unintentional but still damaging, persists in large part because of white educators with unexamined racial biases. Factor in the large and growing racial and ethnic gap between students and teachers, and the sense of urgency is palpable.
With this backdrop, the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education recently convened a summit led by researchers and scholars from its Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education. About 80 educators from across the country—teachers, administrators and instructors from teachers colleges and alternative certification programs—gathered to wrestle with questions concerning race and begin the process of building racial and cultural competency in their classrooms and schools. I continue to BELIEVE that intergrating our schools was a debacle, especailly the way it was handled.
How are you going to take little black kids out of their schools, neighborhoods and bus them into white hoods, where the animosity, hostililty, and downright hatred and bigotry of adults lives?
Back then, one of the biggest solution to better education, schools, and teachers was to FUND THEM ALL EQUALLY. Then we would have had something to measure successes or failures. A
Adults wanting better schools back then for their children thought the only way to get it was to place them in schools that were better funded, staffed, and had better materials.
Today, I wouldn’t want my child or grandchild in a hostile environment with teachers that aren’t preprared to recognize their humanity.

On last night’s episode of Scandal, Mellie slept with Andrew, who slept with Elizabeth, who is working with Kubiak, who was murdered by Huck, which was witnessed by Javi. Jake and Fitz engaged in the world’s cattiest pissing contest. And Olivia wore a winter-white pashmina-cape-snuggie number that was so sick I took some Theraflu on its behalf.
Most significantly, however, Olivia actually teamed up with her two lovers to take down her father. Kim Kardashian may have tried to break the Internet this week, but Olivia is trying to break our brains with this one.
Jake wants Papa Pope dead, but Fitz and Liv just want to prosecute him. Um, haven’t they ever watched a horror movie? I’m not rooting for Papa to die, but I know that it’s never enough to just push the bad guy down the stairs. He always get back up. That’s why you have to shoot him, stab him and then strangle him, just in case.
Alas, it doesn’t even matter because Papa Pope is never to be outdone. Here are five reasons Papa Pope is the champ in this episode (and forever):
1. Papa Pope utters the word “boys” with such conviction, it sounds like a brand-new word.

Girls of All Shades, You’re Going to Want to Hear How Dark Girls Has a New Life
Since the documentary did so well on OWN, the director thought people would appreciate the tactile experience of celebrating brown women in book form.

I knew very early on that my strand of black wasn’t exactly preferred or exalted. I’m chocolate-complexioned—or, to use the term that is most frequently used to describe my hue (much to my chagrin), dark-skinned.
Colorism. It’s arguably one of the most painful vestiges of slavery: society’s disproportionate preference for caramel-complexioned black women, and the insecurities that it has bestowed on women with dark-brown hues as a result.
But contrary to popular belief, it’s not a “black American thing.” There’s a global fascination and preference for fairer complexions. During a phone interview with The Root, film director and actor Bill Duke spoke about the research he did while preparing for his documentary Dark Girls, which he has now turned into a brilliant and powerful book. It was released this week, and Lupita Nyong’o is on the cover. Duke described how dark-brown men in India bleach their skin because they don’t want to be mistaken for a low-income Indian man who works in the fields.
The Dark Girls book features dozens of interviews with high-profile black women who share similar accounts of how they’ve had to contend with their chocolate complexions at some point in their lives. Author Sheila Moses interviewed the women and found that those who were under the age of 50 “did not have the same level of comfort” as older women like Sheryl Lee Ralph and Loretta Devine. The Root spoke with Duke about the book and how colorism might affect people differently; the edited exchange is below:

Members of White Conn. Frat Go Unpunished After Harassing Black Sorority
Members of Pi Kappa Alpha at the University of Connecticut called members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority “whores” after painting on a spirit rock using racially charged speech.

Members of the University of Connecticut chapter of the black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha are speaking out against how they’re being treated by the historically white Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, especially after individual members of the frat went unpunished after making racist and sexist attacks, the school’s Daily Campus newspaper reports.
“We were called whores, and after establishing that I was a university professional, I was verbally accosted, and intimidation tactics were used,” AKA graduate adviser Brittney Yancy said, speaking at a town hall meeting hosted by the African American Cultural Center on Monday. “They called me a fat black bitch—not just a fat bitch, but a fat black bitch.
“I have to deal with the fact that the student who has verbally accosted me received no punishment,” Yancy added of the late-September incident.
According to the Daily Campus, the fraternity as a whole was sanctioned, including a loss of rock-painting privileges, after painting a spirit rock with racially charged words while verbally harassing sorority members. Individual frat members, however, were not punished.
“Privilege will ruin our reputation,” the sorority graduate adviser said. “And if it goes unchecked, this is how it impacts our community. It will determine who matters, who is protected, who gets access and who is worthy of justice on this campus.”
According to the report, Yancy only learned at the town hall meeting that the sorority could file individual complaints against members of the fraternity, as well as a complaint against the fraternity as a whole.

Black-ish makes us laugh while reminding us that even when black parents have “made it,” they still want their kids to remember where they come from.

The seventh episode of ABC’s Black-ish aired this week, and as the show establishes itself thematically, one of the motifs that it consistently explores is parental trial and error. No matter how many books one reads or advice one stockpiles, parenting requires on-the-job training, and the perils of poor parenting decisions have served as prime comedic fodder for family-sitcom plots for decades.
And Black-ish scores big by routinely taking us behind the scenes into the making-it-up-as-you-go nature of parental decision-making. Andre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) job as parents is complicated by the fact that their children are growing up with a significantly more privileged existence than they knew as kids. When faced with the unprecedented challenges that stem from this reality, they frequently find themselves on the field without a playbook, and the fun and the funny come from watching these two parents essentially feel their way over every parenting hurdle.
In the pilot, Dre attempted to help his eldest son, Junior, “connect with his roots” by re-creating a makeshift African rites of passage ceremony. Then, in the episode “The Nod,” Dre learned that Junior was unfamiliar with certain African-American traditions that he considered Black 101, and set out to find him more black friends by trolling random boys at a bus stop and attempting to bring them home with him to befriend Junior.
It was never more clear that Dre and Bow are figuring it out as they go than in the episode “Crime and Punishment,” in which, for the entire show, we watched these two second-guess, flip-flop and hand-wring about whether or not to spank their youngest son.

Washington Cathedral’s first Muslim prayer service interrupted by heckler

In a corner of Washington National Cathedral, several hundred Muslim worshipers and other invited guests gathered Friday afternoon for a first-ever recitation of weekly Muslim prayers at the iconic Christian sanctuary and to hear leaders of both faiths call for religious unity in the face of extremist violence and hate.
The Arabic call to prayer echoed among the vaulted stone arches and faded away, followed by an impassioned sermon from Ebrahim Rasool, a Muslim scholar who is South Africa’s ambassador to the United States. Rasool called on Muslims, Christians and others to come together and make “common cause” in the fight against extremists who appropriate Islam.
“We come to this cathedral with sensitivity and humility but keenly aware that it is not a time for platitudes, because mischief is threatening the world,” Rasool said. “The challenge for us today is to reconstitute a middle ground of good people . . . whose very existence threatens extremism.”

WASHINGTON — The Democrats’ widespread losses last week have revived a debate inside the party about its fundamental identity, a long-running feud between center and left that has taken on new urgency in the aftermath of a disastrous election and in a time of deeply felt economic anxiety.
The discussion is taking place in postelection meetings, conference calls and dueling memos from liberals and moderates. But it will soon grow louder, shaping the actions of congressional Democrats in President Obama’s final two years and, more notably, defining the party’s presidential primaries in 2016.
“The debate will ultimately play out in a battle for the soul of the Clinton campaign,” said Matt Bennett, a senior official at Third Way, the centrist political group.
